Dallas Cowboys: Martellus Bennett Says Jon Kitna Could Start over Tony Romo

Martellus Bennett Thinks the Dallas Cowboys Could Use a Little Quarterback Competition

Say what you will about Tony Romo, the guy is one of the more productive quarterbacks in the league when he's out there. Since taking over the Dallas Cowboys starting quarterback job in 2006, Romo has thrown for well over 16,000 yards, and he's been named to three Pro Bowls.

Unfortunately for the Cowboys, Romo suffered a broken clavicle six games into Dallas' 2010 season and he ended up missing the rest of the year. Jon Kitna was forced to step in, and he proceeded to play pretty well, winning four of his last seven starts.

While all signs point towards Romo being back under center if and when the 2011 gets under way, Cowboys tight end Martellus Bennett is not so sure it should be that simple.

In an interview with ESPN Radio Dallas, Bennett spoke kindly of Kitna and he implied that he might just deserve another shot.

I loved playing with Kitna. Kitna is one of my favorite people to play with. Just being out there on the field with that guy just makes you play even harder. He made some things happen in limited time, so I think if he got a longer chance, he'd be able to do more.

So I hope there's a chance for a quarterback competition this year. Every position, I think we need to put more competition into it.

When Bennett was asked directly whether or not that thinks Kitna could start over Romo, he merely said, "It's possible."

At that point, Bennett must have realized what he was getting himself into, as he quickly added, "I think Romo is awesome."

Too late, Martellus. Damage done. The whole world now knows that you think the not-so-great Jon Kitna is just as capable of being the starting quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys as a three-time Pro Bowler.

I don't mean to burst Bennett's bubble, but I think he's kidding himself. I've never been the hugest Romo fan myself, but even I know he's a much better option than a guy like Kitna, who could very well be the poster boy for the journeyman backup types.

The Cowboys could definitely use a cure for what ails them, but they're definitely not going to find it in Jon Kitna.
