Bowl Projections 2014: Playoff Predictions, Odds Before Critical Week 15

Florida State once again survived by the skin of its teeth, this time against archrival Florida, but it was maybe the fourth-biggest story from Week 14 in the College Football Playoff race.

That is certainly a testament to the unpredictable nature of this sport on a week-to-week basis, especially as the schedule winds down. After all, fans saw the No. 4 team in the rankings lose, Alabama put on an aerial show in a second-half comeback against Auburn and a disheartening injury to a Heisman Trophy candidate all within the course of a few hours Saturday.

With all that in mind, read on for some updated playoff projections and a brief look ahead to Week 15.

Scott Polacek's Playoff Projections

Sugar Bowl: No. 1 Alabama vs. No. 4 Ohio State

Rose Bowl: No. 2 Oregon vs. No. 3 Florida State

Championship Bowl (in Arlington, Texas): TBD (semifinal winners)

Week 15 Playoff Implications Preview

Oregon and Arizona will jump-start Week 15’s slate of conference championship tilts Friday night in the Pac-12 title game.

That matchup is certainly juicy enough on its own, but the Wildcats were the only team to beat the Ducks this entire season. Arizona pressured Marcus Mariota the entire game and picked up timely scores from its offense to shock the college football world.

While the Wildcats have lost twice since then, Oregon has been a completely different team, as Dan Rubenstein of The Solid Verbal pointed out:

Saturday’s most intriguing matchup is the Big Ten Championship between Wisconsin and Ohio State for a number of reasons.

For one, it will be a showdown between two potential Top 10 teams when the updated College Football Playoff rankings are released Tuesday. It will also give the nation and selection committee a chance to see what the Buckeyes look like without J.T. Barrett, who broke his ankle in devastating fashion in Saturday’s win over Michigan.

Paul Myerberg of USA Today had a rather amusing take on the situation:

While much of the discussion surrounding this game will be about Barrett’s injury, Melvin Gordon gets to go up against a run defense that allowed 228 yards to Tevin Coleman and 145 yards to David Cobb. He could solidify his Heisman Trophy campaign with a big game and a victory.

Elsewhere Saturday, Alabama takes on Missouri in the SEC Championship.

Missouri lost to Indiana earlier in the season, and that is the only thing that is ever mentioned when discussing the Tigers. Still, they won seven out of eight SEC games, although that is largely because they avoided Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and LSU on the schedule. They were blown out by Georgia and simply don’t have the talent to deal with Alabama.

The Crimson Tide are a machine that have won seven in a row and will be playing for an assured playoff spot.

The other marquee conference title clash comes in the ACC between Florida State and Georgia Tech.

We know how this is going to end—Florida State will flirt with disaster all game and then find a way to win in the final minutes, just like it always does. One thing to watch out for, though, is Georgia Tech’s powerful running attack out of the triple-option formation. If the Yellow Jackets get a lead, they can bleed the clock by continuously moving the chains on the ground.

The Big 12 games between Kansas State and Baylor and Iowa State and TCU will be somewhat forgotten about with all the conference championships across the sport, but there are major playoff implications in those ones as well.

The Horned Frogs and Bears are battling with Ohio State for the No. 4 seed, but TCU coach Gary Patterson was more worried about what he can control, according to The Associated Press, via ESPN.com:

"You know, this team deserves to go home and win a championship," Patterson said. "We've got one more to do it, and I'm very proud of them. I'm finally going to go maybe smile once, but we've got to get ready to play Iowa State."

While it would make Patterson happy, TCU beating 2-9 Iowa State would do absolutely nothing for its playoff resume, but Baylor beating No. 12 Kansas State would shrink the perceived gap between the Bears and the Horned Frogs.

If that was the case, that head-to-head victory that Baylor boasts over TCU may finally come into play in the playoff race.

Video: Nissan teases next-gen Titan in 'Truckumentary'

Nissan Titan Truckumentary

The Nissan Titan has grown long in the tooth over its decade on the market, especially against major competitors on the truck scene like the latest Ford F-150. Not for long, though, because the next-generation Titan is expected to debut at the upcoming auto show in Detroit in January.

Ahead of that big unveiling, the Japanese brand is launching what it calls the Nissan Titan Truckumentary, a series of videos delving into what it takes to engineer a fullsize pickup. The first teaser clip is already online and shows the next-gen Titan wearing camouflage amidst engineering snippets. Hopefully, future releases starting in mid-December will give an even better look.

Until now, Nissan has kept Titan development a guarded secret, but it did reveal that a 5.0-liter diesel V8 from Cummins with claims of over-300 horsepower and around 550 pound-feet of torque will be part of the powertrain range. The truck was has also been rumored to offer a wider range of models than before, including the possibility of a regular cab version and a V6 engine option. Earlier spy shots have given an even clearer view than this video, showing a pickup with headlights pushed out to the corners.

Check out the video above to hear what Nissan engineers have to say about developing the new Titan, and read below for the automaker's announcement of the Truckumentary series.

Report: Mini phasing out Coupe, Roadster next year

2012 Mini Cooper Coupe

With its previous generation, Mini went for a maximalist strategy, expanding its lineup to include seven derivatives. But with the new generation, BMW's retro Anglo-Saxon brand is shifting gears to a "superhero strategy" focusing on core models with volume sales potential rather than small niches.

That, according to the latest reports, will spell the end of the Coupe and Roadster models introduced in the outgoing generation. Speaking with AutoGuide at the LA Auto Show last week, Mini USA product planning chief Patrick McKenna confirmed that both the two-seat models "will actually go out of production next year" and that "they've run their life cycle."

Though we've yet to receive word on the future of the Paceman, we wouldn't hold our breath for its long-term prospects either. Under the new strategy, Mini is expected to focus more on models like the base Hardtop (now available with three or five doors) and the Countryman - which, between the two of them, account for roughly 75 percent of Mini sales, the other models slicing up the remaining quarter of the pie.

Will you miss them? Will these short-lived Minis become future collectibles, or will they be soon forgotten? Have your say in Comments.

Video: Here's the new face of the Ford Ranger

2015 Ford Ranger shown rendered in a teaser video.

Ford Asia Pacific has put a teaser video on YouTube showing off details on the 2015 Ranger pickup, and at the end we get a quick glimpse of the whole truck. This is the T6 Ranger that we still don't get in North America, but that shares its underpinnings with the Everest SUV recently introduced at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

The Ranger gets a chunkier front end than the Everest, identified by its grille with three floating slats, reminiscent of designs on the previous F-150, and a less-stylized lower front bumper. Ford says it will be smarter, safer, smoother and stronger, but we'll have to wait for its reveal to find out what that means. Meanwhile, you can admire its new looks in the video below.

Numerous Inscription hotfixes now live

The latest round of Warlords of Draenor hotfixes is directed at solving a number of issues with Inscription. The following glyphs were unable to be crafted and have now been added to vendors: The glyphs are currently unique and soulbound -- you cannot buy them en masse to list on the auction house. Glyph of Frostbrand Weapon does not currently have an associated item and could not be added to vendors. For now, shaman will learn the spell automatically instead. If you're a shaman and have not automatically learned the spell, relogging should fix it. Glyph of Blackout Kick, a glyph monks have been digging to find, is not currently in the game at all -- monks will need to wait until the next minor patch to acquire it.

In addition, ink traders -- which were briefly nonfunctional -- should now be fixed.

Premier League Table: Updated 2014 EPL Standings Following Matchday 13 Results

Chelsea dropped points for just the third time this season on Saturday evening as they ran to a 0-0 stalemate at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland's eighth draw of the 2014-15 campaign.

Jose Mourinho's Premier League leaders are fortunate enough to be able to afford the stumble and still have a seven-point lead at the summit, but that won't leave their manager any more content.

Manchester United continue their rise up the ranks after beating Hull City, while Arsenal, West Ham United and Liverpool each took victories to inspire their hopes of top-four finishes on Matchday 13.

Here's how the standings look after this weekend's action thus far:

Manchester United at Their Best in Tigers Mauling

Louis van Gaal's men surged back into the top four and now sit just two points away from Manchester City after battering Hull City 3-0 on Saturday.

The 2-1 win away at Arsenal last weekend was satisfactory, but against an opponent threatened by relegation, United were ruthless this time around, as shown by Squawka:

In arguably Manchester United's most complete performance of the season, Chris Smalling, Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie were all on target for the hosts.

However, Steve Bruce's men are an easy target at present, and with defeat at Old Trafford, last season's FA Cup finalists have now failed to win in six, losing their last four games in a row.

Per Rob Dawson of the Manchester Evening News, the Tigers chief was sure to lump blame on his own playing staff, who he labelled as more than partly to blame for the result:

Midfield issues have created concern for Van Gaal, but the Dutchman will have found it especially pleasing to see Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera star, but Van Persie shone as the man of the moment.

Given his experience, the United boss won't be getting ahead of himself in light of recent results, but after putting together three wins on the bounce, there's certainly cause for optimism at Old Trafford once more.

Arsene Wenger Can't Escape Critics Despite West Brom Win

Following the midweek win over Borussia Dortmund, Arsene Wenger might have been given space to breathe in his never-ending struggle against scrutiny at the Emirates Stadium.

However, even with Danny Welbeck handing his side a 1-0 win against West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns on Saturday, the Frenchman came under fire from his own fans, per ESPN:

Having failed to win either of their previous two Premier League clashes, the Gunners were in need of a result and temporarily rose up to fourth in the table after Saturday's early victory.

When questioned on the banner erected in protest of his management at the club, Wenger was quoted by ESPN as saying: "I don't comment on that." Again, Wenger was quizzed on the sign, to which he replied: "Do I need to say it again? I don't comment on your question."

The Gunners' dressing room will undoubtedly take their positives from the West Midlands, though, while Alan Irvine's side are struggling for momentum, having now won just one of their last seven league fixtures.

QPR Best Foxes in Battle of the Premier League New Boys

In any promotion campaign, besting those who came up alongside you will be seen as a something of a more feasible task. Playoff champions Queens Park Rangers did just that against 2013-14 Championship winners Leicester City on Saturday.

Harry Redknapp's men emerged with a 3-2 victory at Loftus Road to rise off the bottom of the Premier League standings into 18th, their highest position since late September. Centre-back Rio Ferdinand was among those pleased by the result:

Esteban Cambiasso gave the visitors a lead after just four minutes, but goals from Leroy Fer and Charlie Austin piled hurt on Leicester after Wes Morgan helped QPR equalise with a comical own goal.

Austin was among the star players of the five-goal display and currently sits as the most prolific English man in the Premier League, with The Sun confirming just what an entertaining result this turned out to be:

Redknapp will hope to see further performances of this nature in an attacking sense, but the gaps in his defence are still showing and stand to have further impact on their battle against the drop.

West Brom vs. Arsenal: Date, Time, Live Stream, TV Info and Preview

Arsenal will look to bounce back from consecutive Premier League losses when they make the trip to face West Brom in Saturday's early kick-off.

The Gunners drew 1-1 on their last trip to the Hawthorns, but anything other than a win won't do for a team that sits among a selection of sides hoping to make their own moves on the top four.

The Baggies also look vulnerable after losing their last two fixtures, but Alan Irvine's men will hope once again to darken Arsene Wenger's mood.

Date: Saturday, Nov. 29

Time: 12:45 p.m. GMT/7:45 a.m. ET

Borussia Dortmund Win Needs to Kick-start Gunners

A 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday has given Arsenal fans cause for hope amid the club's recent disappointments, ensuring the Gunners a place in the Champions League knockout stages.

However, Wenger's men need to summon the same form on English shores if they're to feature in next season's European competition. Losing at home to Manchester United last Saturday was but their latest dark hour, returning the club to its lowest position of the season so far (eighth).

One familiar storyline to emerge from the Black and Yellows victory saw Alexis Sanchez score and help the north Londoners pull away, and Wenger sang high praise of his summer signing after the result:

However, there is an argument to say Arsenal have grown over-reliant on the Chilean international. As long as he continues to impress, Arsenal will care little, but should West Brom succeed in isolating the Arsenal talisman, the Gunners could find themselves stumped for ideas.

Despite the growing pressure on Wenger, Bleacher Report's Jonathan Wilson insists the players are the ones to be held accountable for recent upsets:

Saturday's trip to the West Midlands will be viewed as a result there for the taking, but the club's recent Premier League struggles nonetheless make West Brom an enemy worthy of wariness.

Key Battle

Saido Berahino vs. Per Mertesacker

Just as Sanchez provides the Arsenal attack with an enigmatic, livewire presence, Saido Berahino has done much the same for West Brom this season, continuing on from the breakout term of 2013-14.

However, this week brought about a gloomier moment in the striker's rise to fame, after the Independent reported that Irvine's talisman had been arrested on suspicion of drink driving:

Premier League football star Saido Berahino is to be interviewed by police after being arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

The West Brom and England striker was stopped for travelling at "high speed" on the M6 motorway in the early hours of the morning. And when officers spoke to Berahino, he was then arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

In a career that's been full of nothing but high points thus far, this threatens a significant low for the Baggies star, and Berahino will be hoping to spin circles around Arsenal's defence in an attempt to win back his admirers.

Per Mertesacker has been the one constant in Wenger's central defence this season, and he'll be expected to take a leading hand in repelling any threat the West Brom attacker might bring against his goal.

Should he be able to do so, Mertesacker will nullify the threat of a figure who has scored seven of West Brom's 13 goals this season, putting the away outfit in an advantageous position to build from the back.

How has child maltreatment surveillance data been used in Canada?

Background:
Recently, a survey was performed as part of a larger study at the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) to develop and pilot a series of tools to measure the uptake and use of PHAC-produced or -supported knowledge products by its key partners and stakeholders. This article aims to i) examine the uptake and use of the Canadian Incidence Study of Reported Child Abuse and Neglect 2008 (CIS-2008) and to ii) assess the utility of a knowledge uptake survey for collecting performance measurement data.
Methods:
Using the knowledge utilization ladder as a theoretical framework, a short survey was developed around the themes of reception, cognition, conversation, reference, effort, influence, and implementation. The survey was administered electronically to potential end-users of the CIS-2008. The final sample comprised 85 respondents.
Results:
The results demonstrated that the majority of the respondents were aware of CIS-2008 and had read and used it. A wide array of disciplines and sectors were identified as end-users. Types of use included discussion of CIS data with social workers, child welfare and health advocates, students, medical and legal professionals, and senior government decision makers. Further, CIS was referenced in reports, articles, policy research, community programs, and funding proposals and was used to influence or support the development of policies, programs, and projects. Valuable information on the use of surveillance reports, such as CIS-2008, can be gathered from a brief survey that was easy to administer, cost effective, and that respondents needed minimal time to complete.
Conclusions:
Piloting of the survey demonstrated that the tool, while not perfect, is quite useful for capturing performance measurement information; CIS-2008 is appreciated and used. There is an increased recognition of the importance of the CIS as a unique source of Canadian child maltreatment surveillance data that can influence and lead to the implementation of new programs and policies. Although suggestions for improvement of the CIS-2008 were provided, the present findings offer support for ongoing national child maltreatment surveillance.

Garrison Followers, traits, abilities, and training

If you've been playing Warlords of Draenor fairly regularly since release, you should by now be familiar with the traits and abilities of your followers. These abilities and traits are randomly generated when you obtain your new follower, but there are some items in game, obtainable via missions, that will teach a chosen follower a new trait. Apparently there had been some confusion regarding these items, so CM Crithto took to the forums to further clarify how these items work.

Crithto
There's been some confusion regarding the various items you can use that allow you to change a trait on one of your Garrisons followers, so we wanted to clarify how these items work.

If you use an item such as the Supreme Manual of Dance or the Hearthstone Strategy Guide, the targeted follower will gain the trait associated with the on-use item, and lose a random trait which cannot be selected or changed after the fact. Currently, the tooltips for these items are not specific enough about the randomness associated with their outcome, and we're working on getting them adjusted.

So if you're now missing a follower with a specific trait you want or need, remember that you can level your Inn or Tavern to tier 2 to gain access to an NPC who will hunt down new followers. When one becomes available, you can then limit your search based on the traits you desire.

Wales vs. South Africa: Date, Time, Live Stream, TV Info and Rugby Preview

Wales hope to channel some of the spirit shown against New Zealand when they welcome South Africa to the Millennium Stadium on Saturday, as the curtain comes down on their autumn international series.

Since succumbing to Ireland in their first tour fixture, the Springboks have embarked on a European rampage, dishing defeats to England and Italy in successive weeks.

Both Warren Gatland and Heyneke Meyer will be expecting a flourish from their teams as they head toward a Rugby World Cup year in 2015, with Cardiff set to host a most promising calendar climax.

Springboks' Overseas Switch-Up Showcases Superb Depth

Both Welsh and South African squads have been hit by absences this week as the fixture falls outside the Test window, restricting some overseas-based players from participating.

Most notable among the absences is the Springboks' back three of Bryan Habana (Toulon), Johan Goosen (Racing Metro) and JP Pietersen (White Knights).

However, it speaks volumes of the depth among Meyer's squad that the coach can call upon recruits as talented as Cornal Hendricks, Willie le Roux and Lwazi Mvovo to fill in.

Speaking of his team's opposition this weekend and the shift in personnel, Meyer was quoted by ESPN Scrum as saying:

This tour has been a good test of our depth and we're looking forward to see what the team can do on Saturday.

We will face a fired-up Welsh side this weekend. They played very well against New Zealand and it will be a tough end to our season, but we want to finish on a high and the focus this week has been on ensuring we keep on building on what we've done thus far this year.

All the players coming into the team have been part of our squad for most of the season. They know our plans and structures and now it's about execution on Saturday.

The Sharks' Mvovo will be particularly intriguing to keep an eye on, given that his chances haven't been as regular in the international setup, but by no means are any of the back-three reinforcements a drop in pedigree.

Gatland is fortunate that his back line isn't affected as badly, with George North, Jamie Roberts, Jonathan Davies and Leigh Halfpenny each possessing international release clauses in their overseas contracts.

Key Battle

Jamie Roberts vs. Jean de Villiers

Last Saturday's 34-16 defeat to the All Blacks was a terribly hard one for most Welsh stars to swallow, especially given that up until the final 18 minutes, they were in a position with a chance of winning the tie.

And few will have been left feeling more bitter than inside centre Roberts, who had a terrific game in managing to restrain Sonny Bill Williams and showed on Twitter that he picked up his share of scrapes:

However, from one match-deciding battle to the next, Roberts' job gets no easier this weekend with the prospect of facing Jean de Villiers for dominance in the midfield channel.

South Africa's veteran centre has had a tremendously busy 2014 schedule and managed to stave off injury for the international calendar.

His influence on the Springboks' back line is a massive one, and while other cogs in the machine might change, he remains a consistent setter of pace and tempo.

In Roberts, however, he faces a foe with the potential to upset that momentum and test his defensive attributes, with Davies running off-shoulder just to add further concern for the visiting midfielders.
