Ultimate Korean Driving Machine? 2015 Hyundai Genesis Prototype Driven

Hyundai?s ambitious 2009 Genesis sedan targeted top-tier luxury brands, but landed alongside the Chrysler 300. Falling short of the lofty goal was hardly a failure, though. Packed with features and convincingly upscale, the Genesis lacked only the chassis refinement of the established German and Japanese luxury competition. With rear-wheel drive and a near-$40,000 price, the [...]

Georgia vs. Georgia Tech: 10 Things We Learned in Bulldogs' Win

Georgia and Georgia Tech did battle at Bobby Dodd Stadium on Saturday afternoon, and the Bulldogs came away with the 41-34 win in overtime.

After being down 20-0 late in the first quarter. The Bulldogs came roaring back thanks to the play of Hutson Mason and Todd Gurley.

The defense for Georgia still had issues in pass coverage, but they were able to limit the Yellow Jackets to 263 yards on the ground, which is well below their average.

It was a very gutsy win for the Bulldogs, and this should carry them into the bowl season.

Here are 10 things we learned in the Bulldogs win vs. Georgia Tech.

Casting /helpme on an Alterac Brew Pup

Several different Blizzard Twitter accounts have lately been suggesting that players cast /helpme on their brand new Alterac Brew Pup to see what it does.

So, WoW Insider thought we'd put together a very short video to show you just exactly what the results were of doing just that! The Alterac Brew Pup is a very cute pet, and of course $5 from every purchase goes to the Make A Wish foundation, so he really is helping people all over the world.

But we were a little underwhelmed by the animation. I cast my /helpme from far away at first, expecting the Pup to run over to me, and thought I'd done it wrong, because I couldn't see any result. But from closer up we can see that he yelps a little and shakes his head. It definitely adds to the cute factor of this pet, but with the tweets we got a little over-excited and were hoping for more.

Differences revealed in brains of preterm infants

Premature birth appears to trigger developmental processes in the white matter of the brain that could put children at higher risk of problems later in life, according to a study being presented next week at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).Preterm infants - generally those born 23 to 36 weeks after conception, as opposed to the normal 37- to 42-week gestation - face an increased risk of behavioral problems, ranging from impulsiveness and distractibility to more serious conditions like autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Misfolded proteins are capable of forming tree-like aggregates in Alzheimer's disease

A method by Rice University researchers to model the way proteins fold - and sometimes misfold - has revealed branching behavior that may have implications for Alzheimer's and other aggregation diseases. Results from the research appear online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. In an earlier study of the muscle protein titin, Rice chemist Peter Wolynes and his colleagues analyzed the likelihood of misfolding in proteins, in which domains - discrete sections of a protein with independent folding characteristics - become entangled with like sequences on nearby chains.

Pupal cocoons affect sanitary brood care and limit fungal infections in ant colonies

Background:
The brood of ants and other social insects is highly susceptible to pathogens, particularly those that penetrate the soft larval and pupal cuticle. We here test whether the presence of a pupal cocoon, which occurs in some ant species but not in others, affects the sanitary brood care and fungal infection patterns after exposure to the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium brunneum. We use a) a comparative approach analysing four species with either naked or cocooned pupae and b) a within-species analysis of a single ant species, in which both pupal types co-exist in the same colony.
Results:
We found that the presence of a cocoon did not compromise fungal pathogen detection by the ants and that species with cocooned pupae increased brood grooming after pathogen exposure. All tested ant species further removed brood from their nests, which was predominantly expressed towards larvae and naked pupae treated with the live fungal pathogen. In contrast, cocooned pupae exposed to live fungus were not removed at higher rates than cocooned pupae exposed to dead fungus or a sham control. Consistent with this, exposure to the live fungus caused high numbers of infections and fungal outgrowth in larvae and naked pupae, but not in cocooned pupae. Moreover, the ants consistently removed the brood prior to fungal outgrowth, ensuring a clean brood chamber.
Conclusion:
Our study suggests that the pupal cocoon has a protective effect against fungal infection, causing an adaptive change in sanitary behaviours by the ants. It further demonstrates that brood removal--originally described for honeybees as "hygienic behaviour"--is a widespread sanitary behaviour in ants, which likely has important implications on disease dynamics in social insect colonies.

Mac 101: An introduction to keyboard shortcuts in Safari for Mac

More Mac 101, tips and tricks for novice Mac users.

A long time friend of mine, who is also a long-time Windows user, has recently bought a MacBook Air. Like any transition, it's not been without its hiccups. But he's really pleased with with his new purchase. He's also a first time user of Safari, so I've been showing him a few keyboard shortcuts to make browsing the web a lot easier.

There are many helpful keyboard shortcuts to be found in Safari. Some simple ones are opening a new tab by hitting the command key (cmd) and T, so cmd+t. Another one is jumping straight to a bookmark by hitting cmd and a number key correspondingly assigned to your bookmarks (more details here). For instance, If BBC News is your third bookmark, hit cmd+3 to jump straight there.

Here are a few I regularly use:

  • Cycle through open tabs by hitting cmd+shift+left arrow (or right arrow).
  • Cmd+click a link to open that link in a new tab. Cmd+alt+click to open a link in a new window.
  • Cmd+w to close the tab your in. Cmd+z to undo the last tab closed. Cmd+r to refresh a tab
  • Shift+click a link to save a link to Reading List.

There are loads more. I came across Shortcutworld.com, which has 58 keyboard shortcuts for Safari.

With all these shortcuts, some are unusually placed, like adding a bookmark using cmd+d (why not b?), or viewing the downloads folder with alt+cmd+l. You'd think the key D would be for downloads, but sadly, no! Fortunately, you can customize Safari keyboard shortcuts (as well as any other Mac app) to just about any way you'd like by going to keyboard preferences in System Preferences.

Treatment of chronic HCV genotype 1 infection with telaprevir: a Bayesian mixed treatment comparison of fixed-length and response-guided treatment regimens in treatment-naive and --experienced patients

Background:
Telaprevir (TVR) has been approved for response-guided-therapy (RGT) of chronic hepatitis C (HCV) genotype-1-infection in treatment-naive and --experienced patients. In RGT-regimens patients that did not achieve extended rapid-virological-response (eRVR) within the first 4--12 weeks undergo treatment for 48-weeks, whereas in fixed-length-treatment (FLT) patients are treated for a fixed-duration regardless of their RVR.
Methods:
This systematic review and Bayesian mixed-treatment-comparison (MTC) aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of standard-therapy with pegylated-interferon-alpha/ribavirin (Peg-IFN-alpha/RBV (48 weeks), group A), FLT with TVR, Peg-IFN-alpha/RBV for 12 weeks with a long (+36 weeks, group B) or short (+12 weeks, group C) tail of Peg-IFN-alpha/RBV treatment, and RGT with 12 weeks of TVR, Peg-IFN-alpha/RBV followed by 12 weeks of Peg-IFN-alpha/RBV (group D) or no therapy (group E).
Results:
We identified seven randomized controlled trials including 3505 patients. Compared to standard-treatment (group A), treatment-naive patients allocated to groups B, C, and D were significantly more likely to achieve sustained-virological-response (SVR, odds ratios (OR): B vs. A 3.5 (credibility interval [CrI] 2.2-5.4), C vs. A 3.0 (CrI 1.8-4.9), D vs. A 3.4 (CrI 2.5-4.6)). Treatment-experienced patients achieved increased SVR rates when they were treated in group B (OR: 8.2 (CrI 5.0-13.5)), C (OR 7.0 (CrI 3.9-12.8)), or simulated group D (OR 8.2 (CrI 4.3-15.3)). Patients treated with short RGT (simulated group E) did also have a significant improvement when they were treatment-experienced (simulated OR 3.6 (CrI 1.6-8.2)), whereas the effect was not significant in treatment-naive patients (OR E vs. A 1.6 (CrI 0.9-2.7)).
Conclusion:
Long FLT and RGT regimens are useful treatment options for HCV-genotype-1 in both treatment-naive and -experienced patients. A short 24-weeks FLT regimen does not seem to be inferior and should further be evaluated in clinical trials to reduce side effects and costs of treatment.

Scouting Liverpool Transfer Target Ryan Bertrand

With Jose Enrique out injured until February and Aly Cissokho failing to impress in the early stages of the season, Liverpool’s weakness at left-back has been of concern lately.

Several suggestions of left-back candidates for Brendan Rodgers to chase in the January transfer window have been put forward, but the one that is gathering pace is Chelsea’s Ryan Bertrand.

Liverpool had an offer turned down for Bertrand in the summer, before the signing of Cissokho on loan.

John Percy and Jason Burt of the Telegraph reported renewed interest in the 24-year-old this week.

What makes Bertrand the top candidate to solve Liverpool’s ailing left-sided problems?

History with Rodgers

Rodgers was part of Chelsea’s Youth Academy between 2004-2008, also working closely with the Reserves in his final two years, before joining Watford.

The Northern Irish manager was part of the team that oversaw Bertrand's move from Gillingham’s youth set-up and worked closely with the youngster.

At the time, in July 2005, Gillingham chairman Paul Scally was incensed by the low amount of compensation his club received for Bertrand.

The Gills were awarded just £125,000, a long way off Scally’s estimations of the teenager's potential, being quoted by the BBC as saying: “Frankly if he plays 40 games then we should be getting £32m."

Attitude and experience

Unfortunately for Bertrand, he has always been forced to compete for a first-team place with arguably Chelsea’s best left-back of all time, Ashley Cole.

However, that hasn’t stopped his desire to one day oust the England international, having gone through loan spells at five Football League clubs in order to impress a succession of Chelsea managers.

When Liverpool had a move for Bertrand rejected in the summer, it appeared the player himself had had a say in matters.

Bertrand remained adamant that he would one day become Chelsea’s first-choice left-back.

He was quoted by Jeremy Wilson and Jason Burt in the Telegraph as saying:

I want to be Chelsea’s number one left-back, and when that time comes it will happen. All I can do is be ready and keep playing, keep biding my time. It won’t be: ‘As soon as Ash goes, there we are, it’s mine.’ The work will still be there to do.

In an attempt to reflect on his allegiance to Chelsea with positive spin in regard to a potential move to Liverpool, Bertrand appears to be committed, passionate and ambitious.

Furthermore, Bertrand has caught the eye of international managers—winning four caps for Great Britain at the London Olympics in 2012, and two for England under Roy Hodgson.

Given his chance

With injury problems plaguing Cole during the 2012/13 season, Bertrand got his chance under temporary Chelsea boss, Rafa Benitez.

He made a total of 40 appearances for the Blues last season, according to SoccerBase.

In his 19 Premier League appearances, Bertrand earned himself a performance score of 278 on stats website Squawka.

Compare that to Enrique’s 121 in the last campaign and Cissokho’s lowly 20 this season, since joining from Valencia.

The then 23-year-old Bertrand’s record in 2012/13 is fairly impressive; boasting 84 percent pass accuracy, 75 percent shot accuracy, zero defensive errors and creating 12 chances.

In fact, he trumps Enrique in all comparable areas (Enrique created 26 chances, but played 10 more games than Bertrand).

However, with the return of Jose Mourinho at the helm this season, Bertrand appears out of favour once again.

Even more telling of Mourinho’s opinion of Bertrand is his selection of Cesar Azpilicueta, the Spanish right-back, in Cole’s absence.

One way ticket

But Chelsea have been wrong to let players go before, none more obvious than the sale of Daniel Sturridge to Liverpool in the last January transfer window.

Outcast by both Roberto Di Matteo and Benitez, Sturridge is now proving his critics wrong, with 11 goals in all competitions this season.

Victor Moses was allowed to leave Stamford Bridge for Anfield on loan this season, though the former Wigan attacker is yet to make his mark at Liverpool.

Glen Johnson too, spent four seasons on Chelsea’s books earlier in his career, having gone on to become both Liverpool and England’s reliable right-back.

Could Bertrand be the next success story to leave West London for Merseyside?

Room for improvement

Should Liverpool sign Bertrand, they certainly won’t be signing a quick-fix to a left-back problem that has rumbled on for years.

Besides having only made one Premier League appearance this season, Bertrand is relatively young and still learning his trade.

Last season he won just 35 percent of his aerial duels, according to Squawka. With Liverpool chronically conceding from set-pieces, it is doubtful Bertrand’s arrival would be the cure.

But Bertrand may well be a realistic transfer target for Liverpool, and possibly available at a cut-price over an import playing regularly for his current club.

Should Bertrand arrive at Liverpool, it will be important to give him playing time and allow him to make mistakes, and learn from them. He would also do well to absorb the wisdom and experience of the defenders around him.

Dual-SIM HTC One with expandable storage comes to the UK

Just days after it unveiled a second gold One, HTC is releasing another variant of its Android flagship in an attempt to boost sales in the UK. Today, the company announced the availability of the HTC One Dual SIM, which you may already know as HTC One 802w. Just like it's Chinese counterpart, the device comes with a removable back for access to dual SIM slots and, more importantly, a microSD slot. That means you can switch between SIMs to receive calls and also fall back on up to 64GB of external storage, should you max-out the One's 32GB of internal storage. The dual-SIM functionality does come at a price, however, as the latest One variant does not support LTE -- otherwise the specs remain unchanged. If you can overlook that, the One Dual SIM is up for pre-order on HTC's official store for £495 ($809), with it likely to head to a "number of networks and retailers" in the near future.

ETC: Man sells testicle to buy Nissan 370Z

2013 Nissan 370Z

We aren't entirely sure what's stranger about this story - that a man actually sold a vital piece of his manhood for a car, or that he did it for a Nissan 370Z. That's not to discredit the trusty Fairlady, a car we generally like, but that if we were to do what Mark Parisi did and sell one of his testicles to science, we'd be asking for a helluva lot more than $35,000.

But Parisi did just that, and announced live on CBS' The Doctors (we really can't make this up) that the sale of his nut would go towards the purchase of a Z. According to our friends Down Under (Australia, get your mind out of the gutter), $35K is the going rate for one slightly used testicle, so if you get nothing else from this story, gentlemen, know that you have $70,000 swinging between your legs.

Auctions: eBay Find of the Day: S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Acura MDX from The Avengers

Acura MDX S.H.I.E.L.D.

Planning to dress up as Agent Coulson for Halloween next year? We've got the perfect accessory to complete your Level 7 costume. On eBay Motors at this very moment is an auction for an Acura MDX S.H.I.E.L.D vehicle, one of only 10 made that the seller claims was used in filming of The Avengers.

The crossover is being sold by Scottsdale Motor Company, and while the eBay auction is up to nearly $19,000 with less than four days remaining (at the time of this writing), the dealer's website is asking $42,900 for this piece of movie memorabilia.

What you see is no mere prop, though. This S.H.I.E.L.D. vehicle is a proper 2011 MDX, equipped with the available Technology Package and leather from the factory. The flat black paint was even applied by Acura itself, and the graphics were added by the film studio's art department.

Actual modifications to the vehicle were done by Cinema Vehicle Services in California and include those fender flares (originally meant for a Ford truck), the front push bar, an LED light bar (not currently installed) and 18-inch wheels wearing beefy BFGoodrich All-Terrain radial tires. Those rollers required significant suspension mods to fit, so the body was raised, sway bars disconnected and air shocks installed. The buyer will also get the factory wheels and tires, but we hope they never use them.

While it's no Lola, this MDX is the closest you're ever going to get to owning one of Coulson's cars. Now, where did the NSX Roadster that Tony Stark drove off in at the end of The Avengers wind up?

CA Chairman vs. England XI, Ashes Tour Match: Date, Time, Live Stream, TV Info

Venue: Alice Springs

Date and time: November 29-31, 2013, 11.30 p.m. GMT.

Live On: Cricket Australia’s website

Squads:

Cricket Australia Chairman’s XI: MA Beer*, SJ Cazzulino†, J Doran, MS Harris, JM Herrick, MW Hill, AR Keath, JK Lalor, S Mackin, JM Muirhead, LJ Robins, AJ Turner

England: JM Anderson, JM Bairstow, GS Ballance, IR Bell, SCJ Broad, MA Carberry, AN Cook*, ST Finn, MS Panesar, KP Pietersen, MJ Prior†, WB Rankin, JE Root, BA Stokes, GP Swann, CT Tremlett

For England, this fixture has assumed added importance since the sudden departure of Jonathan Trott from the squad due to a stress-related illness.

As well as putting in a confidence-boosting performance following the enormous first Test defeat, England now need to solve the problems Trott’s absence causes.

It is widely thought that one of Ian Bell or Joe Root will vacate the now empty No. 3 slot, which means England need to find another batsman to fill either the No. 5 or No. 6 slots depending on which one of Bell or Root ascend.

Gary Ballance and Jonny Bairstow are the spare batsmen in the squad, while all-rounder Ben Stokes is thought to be pushing for selection, too.

Ballance was picked ahead of Bairstow in the initial warm-up fixtures, while Bairstow only got a game when Matt Prior injured his calf—which suggests the management are inclined towards Ballance. However, he scored precious few runs in those matches.

Stokes’ selection would be a bold move. However, his hard-hitting batting and bowling that is reported to be particularly quick of late could be just the injected of energy England require to fight back into the series.

There does appear to be considerable doubt surrounding this selection conundrum and it may well come down to who performs best in this two-day match against a young and relatively unknown Cricket Australia Chairman’s XI.

One player who could force his way into the England team for the second Ashes Test in Adelaide next week is a man who is not even with the squad currently.

Tim Bresnan has this week made his comeback from injury for the England Performance Programme in a match against Queensland XI and took 4 for 31 on Day Two.

If Bresnan is deemed fit enough and indeed the management conclude he has bowled enough when he joins the main squad on Sunday, then Chris Tremlett, who edged in as the third seamer for Brisbane, would miss out on selection. He will, therefore, be particularly keen to impress in this two-day match.

Raiders vs. Cowboys: Live Score, Highlights and Analysis

While most of America enjoys turkey and stuffing on Thanksgiving, the Dallas Cowboys and Oakland Raiders will be fighting to stay in their respective conferences' playoff picture. Dallas (6-5) finds itself on top of the NFC East, while the Raiders (4-7) are pulling up the rear in the AFC West.

Oakland's playoff hopes might be a bit more far-fetched than its Turkey Day opponent's, but the silver and black are no pushover. In four of their past five games, the Raiders have won or lost by five or fewer points.

The Cowboys know a thing or two about tight contests as well. Jason Garrett's team has had just four games decided by more than 10 points this season.

Considering this is the first time Dallas and Oakland have played one another in the past four seasons, there's all the more reason this game could be surprisingly close. The Cowboys need a win to keep hold of the top spot in the NFC East while Oakland will be trying to climb out of its division's basement.

Grab a good arm chair and some leftovers for what could be a thrilling Thanksgiving Day game.

When: Thursday, November 28, at 4:30 p.m. ET

Where: AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas

Watch: CBS

Radio: 105.3 The Fan (Dallas) or 95.7 The Game (Bay Area)

Report: Next Mazda MX-5 Miata to weigh a ton(ne), literally

Looking at recent spy shots of the fourth-generation Mazda Miata, it's obvious this sporty little roadster will grow in size compared to the current model, but it's also going on a diet. At the Tokyo Motor Show, Auto Motor und Sport sat down with Mazda executive Kiyoshi Fujiwara, who gave a little more insight into the Miata's redesign.

Fujiwara said that they're aiming for a curb weight of a tonne (metric ton), which is 1,000 kilograms or right around 2,200 pounds, for the next-generation Miata. This would make the roadster at least 300 pounds lighter than the current NC Miata, but still about 200 pounds heavier than the original NA.

There is no indication as to how Mazda will go about removing that much weight from the bigger car, but with as popular as the power retractable hard top (PHRT) model is on the current car, the new Miata may ditch this feature to lose its weight. Improving the power-to-weight ratio appears to be a key goal of the Mazda team, so we also wouldn't be surprised to see a more powerful engine underneath the longer hood.

Correction: GameStop's Black Friday deals

Earlier this month, we reported a rumor regarding GameStop's Black Friday deals, via a leaked Black Friday ad. As with all rumored information, this was not set in stone -- and now we've got the real deal: GameStop will not be selling 60 day game cards for $5 on Black Friday. We've verified this information with a source, and we're confident of the source's information. Those of you hoping to fill your pockets with cheap game time cards can save your money -- or you can cash in on GameStop's real Black Friday deals, which are still pretty good when it comes to WoW.

Mists of Pandaria will be on sale for $9.99, and it comes with a free 60-day game card. In addition, StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm and Wings of Liberty will be on sale for $19.99 each, and purchasing either of those will net you a 60 day game card. The World of Warcraft Battle Chest will be on sale for $4.99, but it does not include a game time card with the purchase.

For those looking to get started with WoW, this does come out to a pretty good deal -- you can get the Battle Chest and Mists of Pandaria for $15, and get a 60 day game time card free as part of the purchase. Or if you happen to have a friend interested in StarCraft, you can pick up the game for them, and keep the WoW game time for yourself. GameStop's Black Friday ad should be available on their website soon -- those looking for the official ad can visit their official Black Friday page and sign up to be notified once the ad itself goes live.

Compounds created that boost antibiotics' effectiveness

Inhibitor compounds developed by UC Irvine structural biologists and Northwestern University chemists have been shown to bolster the ability of antibiotics to treat deadly bacterial diseases such as MRSA and anthrax. The discovery by UC Irvine's Thomas Poulos and Northwestern's Richard Silverman builds on previous work in which they created compounds that inhibit an enzyme called neuronal nitric oxide synthase. These have demonstrated the potential to treat neurodegenerative diseases by blocking overproduction of cell-killing nitric oxide within neurons.

Tea: Antioxidant Activity: Molecular Aspects Part 2

Membrane lipid rafts and sphingolipid- and cholesterol-enriched membrane microdomains assemble important signaling proteins into complexes prone to be activated by molecular triggers. It has been demonstrated that the lipid raft is used as a platform by a 67-kDa laminin receptor (LamR). The LamR may systematically reshape the rafts and affect the uptake of EGCG. The [...]

15 Minutes of Fame: Angryorc smashes into WoW community's affections

Before November and BlizzCon 2013, the man behind the runaway Twitter hit @Angryorc1 was a little hesitant about unmasking his identity. BlizzCon-bound, he seemed uncertain how to meet fans without compromising his own privacy or popping the illusion when people met a very real, very down-to-Earth dude named Gregg. "Up till now, all my interview requests have been for podcasts, which I have avoided doing," he wrote nervously in October. "I feel the character will lose something if I put my voice out there, plus I sound like Aaron Neville."

But then came BlizzCon. Angryorc charged the convention head on, fully open with his identity, and fans adored him. "I signed autographs, Lisa," he marveled. "Many. How crazy is that? Totally floored by all the support. People telling you they use Twitter specifically to read your stuff or that your jokes have inspired them to come back to play WoW is very, very humbling. It's lit a fire in me to go even harder, to be funnier -- how the hell do I do that?"

With more than 12,000 Twitter followers, he seems to be managing quite well. Here's our interview of the man behind the orc -- and a short interview with the orc himself, as well.

CTX treatment improves recovery from ischaemia through promotion of the growth of new vessels

New research has shown human neural stem cells could improve blood flow in critical limb ischemia through the growth of new vessels. Critical limb ischemia (CLI) is a disease that severely obstructs arteries and reduces the blood flow to legs and feet. CLI remains an unmet clinical problem and with an ageing population and the rise in type II diabetes, the incidence of CLI is expected to increase.

Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire

Sri Lankans will be watching in their numbers when two of the country's leading sportsmen, cricketers Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, appear on television quiz show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? in their homeland.

The pair will take on the questions for charity on Thursday, November 28.

Understandably, everyone is tight-lipped about how they'll fare, but the duo are thought of as one of cricket's more cerebral partnerships. Sangakkara, as All Out Cricket confirms, plans to complete his law degree after cricket. Whether they'll have the general knowledge required to flourish on the show remains to be seen.

In any case, they certainly have form as a partnership. Per Cricinfo's record list, the duo have put on the biggest stand in the history of Test cricket together at 624 runs against South Africa in 2006.

Attention has already turned to the details, with some wondering who they'll pick for their phone a friend.

Protein that triggers immune response to viruses identified

A study led by Massachusetts General Hospital in the US has identified a protein that is vital for triggering the immune system's first response to viral infection. The researchers hope the discovery will lead to new treatments for viruses that have evolved ways of stunting the body's immune response.Writing in the latest online issue of Nature Immunology, the scientists describe how they found the protein GEF-H1 plays a key role in helping macrophages - important cells in the innate immune system - react to viral infections like influenza.

Is acting on delusions autonomous?

In this paper the question of autonomy in delusional disorders is investigated using a phenomenological approach. I refer to the distinction between freedom of intentional action, and freedom of the will, and develop phenomenological descriptions of lived autonomy, taking into account the distinction between a pre-reflective and a reflective type. Drawing on a case report, I deliver finely-grained phenomenological descriptions of lived autonomy and experienced self-determination when acting on delusions. This analysis seeks to demonstrate that a person with delusions can be described as responsible for her behaviour on a 'framed' level (level of freedom of intentional action), even though she is not autonomous on a higher ('framing') level (level of freedom of the will), if, and only if, the goods of agency for herself and others are respected. In these cases the person with delusions is very nearly comparable to people in love, who are also not free to choose their convictions, and who could also be rightly held responsible for the behaviour flowing from their convictions.

The Care and Feeding of Warriors: Amplify, Multistrike, and Readiness

Every week, WoW Insider brings you The Care and Feeding of Warriors, the column dedicated to arms, fury and protection warriors. Despite repeated blows to the head from dragons, demons, Old Gods and whatever that thing over there was, Matthew Rossi will be your host.

You may be asking "What are you talking about with this Amplify, Multistrike and Readiness stuff?" and if you are, it's a fair point. These are the new secondary stats (note that I said secondary, not tertiary) coming with Warlords of Draenor to replace hit, expertise, dodge and parry. And we know this because Celestalon, technical game designer on WoW, explained them on twitter. So, what are these stats? Well, I'll let him explain.
  • X% Amplify means: +X% Crit Damage Multiplier and Multistrike Damage Multiplier, and +X% more Haste/Mastery/Readiness/Spirit/Armor from gear.
  • X% Multistrike means: Each ability has two separate (X/2)% chances to hit each target an additional time for 30% damage. Multistrikes count as hitting the same target twice with one cast, not multiple casts. (i.e. Mind Blast won't generate 2 shadow orbs) Multistrike is split into two (X/2)% chances, so that you can occasionally get a triple-hit (fun!), and the cap is 200%, not 100%.
  • X% Readiness increases the cooldown recovery rate (aka, divides the cooldown by (1+Readiness)) of *some* class abilities. The number of abilities affected by Readiness will vary by spec (will be listed in spellbook, like Mastery). Coefficient likely to vary too.
Celestalon via twitter
Amplify is basically the ability Thok's Tail Tip currently gives, Multistrike is similar to our arms mastery (or this Agi trinket), and Readiness is basically the Evil Eye of Galakras. Celestalon notes that Readiness won't be linked to the exact same abilities as the trinket, but the basic effect is the same - the more readiness you have, the more some of your cooldowns will be reduced. It's very important to realize these will be secondary stats, on the same statistical tier as Crit, Haste and Mastery are now.

These are interesting stats for a couple of reasons. The first is because, like Mastery, they have broader effects than just "hit faster/crit more" - Amplify in particular is a stat that magnifies other stats, so stacking Amplify affects a variety of other stats (the ones listed above that we would care about are Haste, Mastery, Readiness and Armor) as well as the damage of our critical hits and Multistrike extra attacks. This means that if Mastery was a big stat for warriors in Warlords, it might be very worthwhile to stack Amplify/Mastery gear.
