The Queue: I'm sorry, who are we facing again?

Welcome back to The Queue, the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Anne Stickney (@Shadesogrey) actually liked this fight best out of all of ToC.

My raid guild was chatting while raiding last night, as we do, and at some point during the evening someone brought up poor Wilfred Fizzlebang. It reminded me of Mr. Voltron's excellent Jaraxxus remix, which I hadn't heard in a long time, so I thought I'd use it for the Queue today. This isn't the original version, it's a mashup mix, and I kind of like it better than the original.

Let's open with a Twitter question, because this was a pretty good question to ask.

@RJME92 asked via Twitter:

why in the world does varian and the alliance leadership not demand concessions from the horde in the aftermath of Siege?

New ultrasound technique provides alternate way to visualize tumors

While ultrasound provides a less expensive and radiation-free alternative to detecting and monitoring cancer compared to technologies such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs, ultrasound has seen limited use in cancer treatment due to clarity and resolution issues. But researchers at the UNC School of Medicine have overcome this limitation by combining ultrasound with a contrast agent composed of tiny bubbles that pair with an antibody that many cancer cells produce at higher levels than do normal cells.

2014 Predictions for St. Louis Cardinals Offseason Acquisitions

The St. Louis Cardinals came out of the 2013 World Series in a hurry to prepare for the team’s next shot.

It was only a few weeks before John Mozeliak had made a pair of substantial moves addressing the team’s two most glaring needs from 2013—a shortstop and a center fielder.

The assumption was that the Cardinals would have to give up a portion of their coveted young pitching in order to make a deal happen. Mozeliak made it happen both through free agency and a deal trading David Freese, a local hero in need of a change of scenery.

Looking toward the future, each of those acquisitions is capable of having an impact on the 2014 Cardinals. Following is a prediction for each of the Cardinals’ four major offseason pickups.

Video: Toyota TRD Pro lineup coming next week

A mysterious Toyota commercial recently popped up on YouTube teasing a new TRD Pro lineup for the Tundra, Tacoma and 4Runner, and now we're getting our first official word straight from the automaker on the matter. Courtesy of its Facebook page, Toyota is promising that the TRD Pro models will be introduced on February 6th, ready to "conquer the great outdoors."

This date just so happens to mark the first day of the always-truck-friendly Chicago Auto Show, so while Toyota isn't saying as much, we're almost certain the trucks will show up next week in the Windy City. It's not clear what sort of upgrades TRD Pro brings, but it definitely includes black wheels and a tweaked front end featuring a thick, single-bar grille and bold lettering in place of the stylized Toyota logo (shown above on the Tundra).

Scroll down to see the video, and head over to Toyota's Facebook page to see a teaser image of the 4Runner TRD Pro.

Report: 2015 F-150 launch to curb Ford profits?

2015 Ford F-150

Ford is making a big bet on aluminum with its new 2015 F-150, and it's possible that the decision will hurt the company financially, at least in the short term. After earning a record $8.6 billion in 2013, the Blue Oval does not expect to set another record in 2014. According to Automotive News, that's "largely attributable to F Series," says Bob Shanks, Ford's Chief Financial Officer.

To retool for the new F-150, Ford will idle its Dearborn Truck Plant in Michigan for 11 weeks and the Ford Kansas City Assembly Plant in Missouri for 2 weeks. "3 of the 13 overall weeks occur during what normally is our summer shutdown timeframe," said Mike Levine, Ford Trucks Communication Manager, in an email to Autoblog. The extra 10 weeks will be preparing for the more aluminum-intensive construction for the trucks and will mean over 2 months of no F-150s being made. For comparison's sake, Chrysler boss Sergio Marchionne just confirmed that the 200 plant in Sterling Heights, MI will be down for 30 days to retool for the new model, but obviously there are many more F-150 production variables than for the midsize sedan.

Levine notes that Ford is already running three shifts at both plants, and says the automaker has plans to ensure that there is adequate supply of the full-size pickups during the retooling process. The company does not want to suffer a shortage of the vehicle that accounted for 31-percent of its 2013 US sales and an even bigger percentage of its profits.

However, in its just-released 2013 financial report, Ford admits that the F-150 changeover will "result in lower wholesale volume than in 2013." It will also have to put discounts on remaining models to get them off of dealers' lots. According to the report, "Ford also expects higher manufacturing, engineering and spending-related costs to support the launches."

Anatomy of the Transfer Rumour: Juan Mata to Manchester United

On Tuesday night, Juan Mata made his debut for Manchester United in a 2-0 win against Cardiff City at Old Trafford.

Just five months ago the thought of writing such an opening sentence would have seemed utterly preposterous.

After all, Mata was arguably Chelsea’s most accomplished player, who looked set to play a leading role under Jose Mourinho's new regime.

Since arriving from Valencia in the summer of 2011, the Spanish international had become a Stamford Bridge favourite for his flair, quick feet and important goals and assists.

He had been voted Chelsea’s Player of the Year in both of his first two seasons as he helped the club win the Champions League, the Europa League and FA Cup.

Mata was only 25 years old, so still maturing and several years from reaching his peak.

Surely Chelsea couldn’t possibly contemplate selling their best player to the reigning champions, however wounded they would become under David Moyes this season?

And yet Mata is now a Manchester United player: How did this happen? How did it evolve from a rumour to a done deal?

As reported by The Daily Mail, there was first speculation in July last year that Chelsea would be prepared to let Juan Mata and David Luiz join United in a swap deal involving Wayne Rooney.

Chelsea confirmed their interest in Rooney with a formal bid, but denied they would allow Mata or Luiz to move in the other direction.

Despite the denial, those two names were now in the public domain, and it planted the seed of doubt in their minds as they began to ask themselves: Am I still wanted?

By the end of August, it was clear to Mata he was no longer wanted by Mourinho.

As The Guardian reported, it was at the end of August as the summer transfer window closed that Manchester United first began to learn that Mata was not wanted by Chelsea and could be interested in a move to Old Trafford.

As moves for Cesc Fabregas and Ander Herrera ultimately failed, United didn’t immediately act on this information about Mata, but rather decided to monitor the situation.

What they saw was Mata increasingly being left out of the team by Mourinho, and go from their star player to a peripheral figure.

The Spaniard was not prepared to sit on the sidelines, especially as it was potentially harming his chances of being in his country’s World Cup squad.

As reported by The Guardian, Mata sought an agreement with the Chelsea hierarchy that if he was not being played then he could be sold in the January window.

Chelsea agreed to his request and put a figure of €45m on his head. They also decreed he could not be sold to Manchester United; however, Mata later had this condition removed.

United were made aware of this agreement and the player’s desire to join them if he continued to be ostracised by Mourinho.

When the January transfer window opened, United did not immediately pounce, appreciating Mata would not be allowed to join them until they had played Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on January 19.

According to The Daily Mail, on Thursday last week Manchester United sent Chelsea a written bid for €45m for Mata.

The United hierarchy preferred this old-fashioned means of communication to avoid Chelsea seeking to include Wayne Rooney in the deal. United would not countenance selling their striker.

It is curious United seemingly could not trust themselves to simply resist Chelsea in any phone conversations or face-to-face meetings; however, it did prove to be a successful approach.

The next day Jose Mourinho spoke about Mata’s sale in his press conference as if it had already happened.

However, the deal wasn’t concluded until the following day when the Spanish international travelled to Manchester, completed his medical and signed his contract.

After the rumours had first surfaced, it had taken only six months for Mata to become a United player.

In fact it was a relatively courteous transaction for all parties, as the player didn’t aggressively agitate for a move, and there was little rancour between the buying and selling clubs.

Now that the deal has been done, it remains to be seen whether Mata can revive United's season and whether Mourinho can demonstrate he was right to cash in on the player.

Ready Check interviews Brian Holinka and Ion Hazzikostas

Eye of C'Thun
This past week the hosts of EU-based podcast Ready Check were lucky enough to go visit Blizzard's offices in Versailles, where they met up with Brian Holinka and Ion Hazzikostas for a lively round of Q&A. The podcast--with attendant full transcript, don't you worry, folks who can't play the podcast--covers a very broad range of topics, and PvPers should be particularly interested in the broad discussion about arenas. Gothiques and Athene bring up some wonderful points about arena queuing, and matching, and the little ways in which the system often results in unexpectedly wasted time, as well as the ways in which not-entirely-honest players can manipulate that system in their favor. Both Holinka and Hazzikostas have insights to offer on these problems, and there's some good back-and-forth about potential solutions and improvements to the existing arena systems.

In addition to the excellent PvP discussions, the interview features some talk of Warlords of Draenor and the future--some of which we've already heard about, but I am so excited for garrisons and a toys tab that I could listen to this stuff all day long. Do you know how many bag spaces I'm going to get back once that toys tab goes live? In the words of the Diablo Templar companion, it will be glorious! There's also some really fun discussion on the philosophy and practice of encounter and mechanics design, and how the WoW team goes about building raids and bosses. This was perhaps my favorite part of the interview, because I am a hopeless PvPer and am much more at home among WoW's raid bosses. In any case, no matter what part of the game you enjoy, there's something in this interview for you. You can check out the full transcript and podcast episode at Ready Check's own website, so make sure to click on over to the whole thing!

Awesome Sports Video Remixes

Raw footage is good, but sometimes I like my sports film with extra sauce.

It's beautiful what a creative mind can do once it's been turned loose on some verbatim sports footage. The juices start flowing, taunts turn to songs and Steve Spurrier ends up getting freaky to the dulcet sounds of R. Kelly.

The point is this: Quality sports video remixes are like dessert. They're your average highlights and film that have been cut up and drizzled in music, AutoTune and satire.

The following are some awesome sports video (and GIF) remixes, courtesy of DJ Steve Porter and a host of other creative minds. They're funny, inspiring and about 12 times tastier than your cut-and-dry sports footage. Time to eat up and go back for seconds.

100,000,000 World of Warcraft accounts infographic

Blizzard has been very busy putting together a really cool infographic. It's way too large for us to repost in full here, but you can hit the link and see it in all its glory.

There's a ton of interesting facts and figures, starting with some hard numbers. Over 100,000,000 WoW accounts have been created since its inception. Yes, that's one hundred million players, as they put it. I have created five accounts myself, though, so that might skew their numbers a little. Nonetheless, it's easy to forget just how high the churn rate is, how many people join and leave. Of those people, 52% have been Alliance, and 47% have been Horde, with 1% never picking a side and remaining neutral. I'm surprised that many Pandaren haven't made it off the Wandering Isle!

Other interesting facts include the rarest mount -- the Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent -- and the most common and rarest pets -- the Squirrel and the Tiny Red Carp respectively. On the topic of pets, there's a massive 3.6 million pet battles undertaken every day in Azeroth. Content just for a casual few? Doesn't look like it! Interestingly, too, the number of PvP instances at 670k is far closer to the number of PvE instances at 900k than the average reader might think.

There's so much great information in this infographic, go have a look and read the accompanying blog too.

And now for something radically different and incredibly awesome. Created as a project of passion by Hugh Hancock - one of the pioneers of machinima -- using Avatar-style motion capture, featuring voice acting by Hollywood actors, Death Knight Love Story is probably one of the most epic fan films every conceived.

The video runs about 20 minutes long, and it's the only first installment. The voice acting is superb, of course, but the imagination and story itself are both remarkable. Make sure you schedule some time to watch it; this is the machinima folks will be talking about for a while.

Analysis of pfhrp2 genetic diversity in Senegal and implications for use of rapid diagnostic tests

Background:
The Senegalese National Malaria Control Programme has recommended use of rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) that target the histidine-rich protein 2 (HRP2), specific to Plasmodium falciparum, to diagnose malaria cases. The target antigen has been shown to be polymorphic, which may explain the variability in HRP2-based RDT results reported in field studies. The genetic diversity of the pfhrp2 gene has not been investigated in depth in many African countries. The goal of this study is to determine the extent of polymorphism in pfhrp2 among Senegal, Mali and Uganda parasite populations, and discuss the implications of these findings on the utility of RDTs that are based on HRP2 detection.
Methods:
Sequencing data from the pfhrp2 locus were used to analyze the genetic diversity of this gene among three populations, with different transmission dynamics and malaria parasite ecologies. Nucleotide diversity (pi) and non-synonymous nucleotide diversity (piNS) were studied in the pfhrp2 gene from isolates obtained in Senegal. Amino acid repeat length polymorphisms in the PfHRP2 antigen were characterized and parameters of genetic diversity, such as frequency and correlation between repeats in these populations, were assessed.
Results:
The diversity survey of the pfhrp2 gene identified 29 SNPs as well as insertion and deletion polymorphisms within a 918 bp region. The Senegal pfhrp2 exhibited a substantial level of diversity [pi = 0.00559 and piNS = 0.014111 (piS = 0.0291627)], similar to several polymorphic genes, such as msp1, involved in immune responses, and the gene encoding the SURFIN polymorphic antigen, which are surface exposed parasite proteins. Extensive repeat length polymorphisms in PfHRP2, as well as similar patterns in the number, organization and the type of predicted amino acid repeats were observed among the three populations, characterized by an occurrence of Type 2, Type 4 and Type 7 repeats.
Conclusions:
These results warrant deeper monitoring of the RDT target antigen diversity and emphasize that development of other essential genes as a target for diagnostic tools is critical.

South Carolina Football: Why an NFL Team Should Take a Chance on Connor Shaw

COLUMBIA, S.C.—It's almost a given that some NFL team is going to take a chance on South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw.

Chances are even better they won't regret it.

Undersized, underrated and considered more of a runner than a passer, pro scouts will likely take a second look at some of those labels after the senior season Shaw recently finished for the 11-2 Gamecocks.

Shaw completed 180 of 284 passes (63.4 percent) for 2,447 yards, 24 touchdowns and only one interception. He also rushed 154 times for 558 yards and six touchdowns.

Sure plenty of other quarterbacks put up gaudier numbers, but most were operating out of spread offenses—which can often distort a quarterback's true abilities.

To truly appreciate Shaw as a quarterback, it's necessary to look beyond the numbers and take into account his uncanny ability to scramble and find an open receiver, or to tuck it in, run and seemingly always make it to the first-down marker.

He moved the chains, moved the offense and found a way to finish with the best record (27-5) of any quarterback in school history.

"Connor Shaw is the most underrated quarterback that ever played the game of college football," former coach and current ESPN college analyst Lou Holtz said in a recent interview with Gene Sapakoff of the Charleston Post and Courier.

Holtz has never been shy about throwing out superlatives, but Shaw's performance this season was good enough to earn him an invitation to next month's NFL combine in Indianapolis.

While there, he'll be poked, prodded and measured in everything measurable and even some things that are not.

It's highly unlikely that Shaw will do anything but help himself at the combine, especially when it comes to the intangibles.

Shaw is a leader, a winner and possesses a keen football mind. Those qualities will no doubt shine through during the interview process.

Pro scouts are going to like what they see from Shaw. They're going to love what they hear.

At present, his draft stock is not particularly high. CBSsports.com rates him as the 12th-best quarterback in the draft, the 229th best player overall and probably a sixth to seventh-round selection.

His stock could easily climb a bit between now and draft day.

He got off to a good start in the NFL Collegiate Bowl, where he completed five of six passes for 70 yards with one interception.

At present, he's working out in Duluth, GA, in preparation for the combine. Shaw told GoGamecocks that his daily routine consists of two hours of work with a quarterback coach, two hours of weight work and two hours of speed and conditioning drills.

In Shaw's favor is the recent trend toward running quarterbacks like Seattle's Russell Wilson, who at 5'11", is an inch shorter than Shaw.

It has been well documented over time that the drafting of NFL quarterbacks is an inexact science. For every Peyton Manning, there's more than one Ryan Leaf.

By contrast, Tom Brady was a sixth-round pick and the seventh quarterback chosen in the 2000 NFL draft. It would not be premature for the NFL Hall of Fame to go ahead and commission his bust.

Shaw may not get drafted, but he'll almost certainly sign as a free agent with some team if only regarded as a "camp arm."

It doesn't really matter. All Shaw needs is a chance.

He'll likely make the most of it.

Around Azeroth: The blood elf parabox

Submitter Bruin of Silver Hand (US-H) suffers from a deep inferiority complex due to being one of te traditional 'ugly' members of the Horde. So when his troll ran into a group of blood elves attempting to open a mysterious box, it was easy for them to talk him into prying it open with his scythe. Sadly, it turns out that the box was a Mimic from Dungeons and Dragons, and he was promptly enveloped and digested. (Why don't we have those monsters in World of Warcraft again? I would love to see a room full of elite treasure chests devouring unwary adventurers -- with a couple of real chests in there as bait.)

Chelsea Transfer News: Blues Should Let Victor Moses Leave at Season's End

You know what Chelsea will need in the summer? Another winger.

Victor Moses' loan will expire at the end of the season. Before this year started, there was very little chance that he'd get into the first team, hence his loan to Liverpool.

After a year at Anfield, it appears Moses would face the exact same situation should he return to Stamford Bridge. That's why Chelsea might as well let him stay at Liverpool permanently when the 2013-14 campaign is over.

Brendan Rodgers would appear to welcome the move, per Goal's Alex Young:

For Victor, it is very simple," Rodgers told reporters. "He wants to remain in a position that he will remain at a big club, whether it is Chelsea or Liverpool. There is no bigger motivation than that.

In order to do that, he needs to be performing day in day out in training. If he does really well for us there is a possibility we will want to have him permanently, but ultimately it is Chelsea’s decision because he is their player.

Since arriving at Liverpool, Moses has played OK, but nowhere near a level where he'd be a huge asset to Chelsea. Although he's still 23 years old, there's nothing that makes you think the Blues would be making a Daniel Sturridge or Nemanja Matic-sized mistake by letting him leave permanently.

Following Sturridge's move and subsequent success at Liverpool, it made sense that Chelsea would be hesitant to sell Moses outright last summer. He's shown some flashes of talent, so maybe in new surroundings and with a better shot at playing time, he could turn his potential into actual production.

Except, that hasn't happened.

According to WhoScored.com, Moses' scored one goal in 13 Premier League appearances, and his average rating is 6.46. You could say his performance has been below expectations.

Antoine Zammit, who runs the Empire of the Kop blog, wrote in Metro that LFC supporters are far from thrilled at the prospect of Moses coming back next season:

The Liverpool supporters have been very disappointed with what they have seen of Moses so far, and have taken to social networking sites to show their disapproval at the news he may be offered a permanent deal in the summer.

Brendan Rodgers says criticism of Moses, and Liverpool, over the loan is unfair and reckons the Nigerian international is improving all the time.

Maybe Chelsea should sell Moses now before Rodgers changes his mind.

If he does in fact not have a new home next year, you find yourself asking the exact same question you were in the summer: Where does Moses get in the team?

Juan Mata's moved to Manchester United, but in his place, the club now has Mohamed Salah. Jose Mourinho confirmed the arrival of the Egyptian winger, per The Guardian.

That means that Moses would have to beat out Salah, Willian, Eden Hazard and Andre Schürrle if he's to get into the first team regularly.

And if the rumours are to believed, Mourinho is eying up Real Sociedad's Antoine Griezmann in the summer; however, Sociedad have denied any such interest from the Blues, per The Independent's Samuel Stevens.

But the Salah and Willian rumours sounded a little crazy, until they actually happened.

Should he remain at Chelsea through the summer, Moses would be a rotation player, at best. He may make the occasional start in the League Cup or FA Cup, but rarely would he start the important matches.

Surely he wouldn't be content with that. Moses isn't so bad that he couldn't start regularly at some Premier League club.

That Premier League club just happens to not be Chelsea.

The origin of the evil conformation of prion proteins

"When they are healthy, they look like tiny spheres; when they are malignant, they appear as cubes" stated Giuseppe Legname, principal investigator of the Prion Biology Laboratory at the Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati (SISSA) in Trieste, when describing prion proteins. Prions are "misfolded" proteins that cause a group of incurable neurodegenerative diseases, including spongiform encephalopathies (for example, mad cow diseases) and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Legname and coworkers have recently published a detailed analysis of the early mechanisms of misfolding.

Liverpool Transfer Rumours: Andre Gomes Tipped to Depart Benfica

Benfica defensive midfielder Andre Gomes could be the first new face at Anfield during the January transfer window, reports Duncan Castles of The Sunday Times (subscription required).

The 20-year-old Portuguese Under-21 international is reportedly available for £12.4 million and could be seen as a future mainstay in the Liverpool midfield.

With an injury to Lucas Leiva ruling him out for a chunk of the season and Steven Gerrard no longer the all-action player he once was, Brendan Rodgers is keen to add additional midfield reinforcements as his side fights for the title.

Castles reports that Gomes, who represented his nation at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup last summer, could be an ideal signing for Liverpool as his qualities fit into Rodgers' style of play, as well as transfer strategy:

[Gomes] is known for his precise use of the ball and is regarded by Brendan Rodgers as well suited to Liverpool’s possession-oriented game.

Liverpool’s transfer-window strategy has been to look for good-value signings that will give Rodgers the option of two quality players.

However, Portuguese football expert Tom Kundert said on Twitter the reported sum is a lot for a player who has rarely featured for Benfica in the league or Champions League this season:

Manager Rodgers has so far been unable to add to his squad during January despite being linked with a host of players. Most recently, Egypt international Mohamed Salah chose Chelsea over a move to the Reds.

It may also be Chelsea that indirectly scupper Liverpool's chances of signing Gomes.

The Stamford Bridge outfit purchased Nemanja Matic from Benfica earlier in the transfer window, meaning that the Portuguese side may be unwilling to sell another one of their midfielders during this window.

However, O Jogo, via Sky Sports, reports that Benfica are actually close to selling Gomes to an English club, indicating he may be available if the price is right.

In another twist, super agent Jorge Mendes—who represents Cristiano Ronaldo, Jose Mourinho and other global stars—reportedly bought the economic rights for Gomes for around £12 million, meaning that his days in a Benfica shirt could be numbered, per espbr.com.
