The Light and How to Swing It: First look at protection in Mists beta

Every week, WoW Insider brings you The Light and How to Swing It for holy, protection and retribution paladins. Protection specialist Matt Walsh spends most of his time receiving concussions for the benefit of 24 other people, obsessing over his hair (a blood elf racial!), and maintaining the tankadin-focused blog Righteous Defense.

Last week, we talked about the first tantalizing drip, drip, drips of information that were emitted in the Mists of Pandaria press tour that occurred, as well as the various media appearances that surrounded that event. Then, suddenly -- beta. So here we are, somewhere between the ecstasy of exploring a new world of ubiquitous wind chimes and rotund, alcoholic bear-men, and the agony of the occasional and painful glance at the beta invitation status on our account page.

Nonetheless, at least we can live vicariously through the goings-on of beta players while we wistfully watch from afar. There's a lot of information coming out of beta, from datamining to the experiences of those lucky jerks already inside, and so we have lots to talk about. Let's dig in and make sense of all the changes that'll be waiting for us when the next expansion hits (thus far!). Also, please note, I'm avoiding anything that we've already learned in the past run-up -- including changes to block, the new and various talents, and previously revealed abilities like Boundless Conviction.

Anime Studio 8.1 is great animation software for beginners

At Macworld | iWorld 2012, I had the chance to sit down with the folks behind Smith Micro's Anime Studio and discuss the latest update to its Anime Studio animation suite. Anime Studio 8.1 allows support for Wacom multi-touch tablets, the first of its kind for a piece of animation software. After Macworld, they sent me a Wacom Bamboo Capture so I could try the software out for myself.

Anime Studio is a vector-based program designed to make the transition to doing your own animation a bit easier. The program assumes you know very little about the animation process, and will ask if you want to enter beginner or standard mode.

I went for the beginner mode and was treated to a very nice, robust tutorial and a pre-made character designed to teach me how everything worked. There were guides cueing me into showing me what parts of the character I could move, and it took very little time to make a crude animation. The amount of flexibility in the program is impressive, and I even had part of my character's face separated from the rest for awhile!

Using the Wacom was especially nice in freehand mode to do doodles, but I will leave the majority of the serious artwork to my comics partner. I would love to see what Isa could do with Anime Studio. I wouldn't recommend the Wacom to a very young child who isn't quite sure of all the controls, but a middle-schooler would be absolutely fine. One of Smith Micro's goals is to get Anime Studio into more schools, and I wish there had been something like this when I was in school.

There's two flavors of Anime Studio: The Pro version runs $199.99 and the Debut version is $49.99. Both are available as 30-day trials, so if you're interested in flexing your animation wings, this is great animation software to help you get started.

Check out the video below from Macworld | iWorld 2012 to see the Wacom tablet in action in Anime Studio.

Apple clarifies iPad 4G in Australia

Apple is under fire for its iPad 4G marketing in Australia and facing legal action from a consumer watchdog group which claims the company's advertising is misleading. After a meeting with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), Apple has agreed to modify its advertising in the country, says a report in The Next Web.

Apple will add a statement to its marketing materials that'll clarify that the iPad is not compatible with Australia's LTE and WiMAX networks. Its website and in-store signage will now say,

This product supports very fast cellular networks. It is not compatible with current Australian LTE networks and WiMAX networks.

For service from a wireless carrier, sign up for a simple, month-by-month plan on your iPad and cancel anytime without penalty.

Apple will also contact current iPad WiFi+4G owners and offer them a refund. Apple's not delaying on this and has already changed the wording on its website. It will change its in-store materials and contact iPad 4G customers by April 5th.

WoW Moviewatch: Tales of the Past III

It's hard to sum up the Tales of the Past series. The series goes far beyond simply being a story-based machinima. It took years for Martin Falch to create these videos, edit them, and get them out to the public.

Tales of the Past is a three-part series involving some of the most core, sweeping moments in WoW history, a huge treat for machinima fans. To many people, Tales of the Past represents the definitive fan film experience. While that might seem like high praise, take the time to check out the third installment above. You'll see how it became so influential.

WoW Moviewatch: Behind the Raid episode 1

This video is kind of crazy. The guild Progression Pug on Misha (US-H) contains a separate raid team called Brew Ha Ha. That raid team got together and created this subtle, tongue-in-cheek video. Behind the Raid shows off the hijinks and shenanigans that happens during a raid.

Deathfarg and Gulabull produced this video, and I tip my hat to the inventive leaders. Doing something like this goes a long way toward promoting team unity, and the whole production looks like an immense amount of fun. I'd maybe step up the sound quality for further episodes, if possible, but I thought the joke and dialogue was awesome.

Knowing The Nutritional Content Of Foods Doesn't Equate To Healthy Eating

A study by Universite Laval's Maurice Doyon and French and American researchers shows that U.S. consumers know surprisingly more about the fat content of the foods they buy than their French counterparts. Paradoxically, the obesity rate is nearly three times higher in the United States (35%) than it is in France (12%). In light of these results, published in a recent edition of the British Food Journal, the researchers cast doubt on the notion that providing nutritional information is an effective way to encourage healthy eating habits. DoubleTwist adds Google Music support, gets an alarm clock app

DoubleTwist Alarm Clock
DoubleTwist is certainly still one of the better music management options for Android, and it just keeps improving. Two days ago the player app got an update and now it can hook into Google Music, though, it only recognizes songs that you've checked for offline access from within the Google app. An unfortunate restriction, but at least your tracks don't disappear into the ether if you prefer to play back your tunes via DoubleTwist. There's also new functionality coming to what is now less an app than an ecosystem, thanks to the just released DoubleTwist Alarm Clock. The functionality is pretty much what you'd expect -- set a time and pick a song from your DoubleTwist library to gently rouse you from your slumber (or kick your butt out of bed). The Alarm Clock is just $0.99 in the Play Market right now for the first 10,000 customers. After that it'll go up to $1.99. So don't waste any time, go download it now.

Around Azeroth Beta Edition: Seasonal allergies

Submitter Nganga of Pact of War on Silver Hand (US-H) sent us this nice screenshot of the Temple of Five Dawns on the Wandering Isle, featuring the Warcraft universe's equivalent of a peach blossom tree. I suppose it could also be a very sparsely blooming cherry blossom or magnolia, but Blizzard might want to hold off on those just in case it needs to mine the cultures of Japan or the American South for a future expansion. I kid, I kid. (Although on further consideration, a New Orleans-type city would actually be fantastic.)

Anyway, the pandaren statue sitting beneath the tree looks quite peaceful, although he might not be so serene if he didn't have an umbrella to protect him from the torrent of pollen swirling around the room. How much would an alchemist charge for an Elixir of Benadryl?

WWE Rumors: WrestleMania 28, John Cena, The Rock and Friday's Top WWE News

After one year of build, hype, anticipation and television promotion, WrestleMania is so close you can taste it. Whether you agree with all the choices WWE has made on this whirlwind tour, just knowing that it is here is enough to get you excited.

There are still two days to go before the big event, an there is plenty of news coming out of the WWE headquarters. We are going to get you ready for what is expected to be one of the biggest shows in wrestling history and a whole lot more.

Here is your final look inside the heads of Vince McMahon and the creative team before the greatest spectacle in sports entertainment.

WWE KNOWS HOW EVERY WRESTLEMANIA MATCH ENDS

In what can only be described as a drastic change of course for a company that always changes its mind, Vince McMahon and the creative team reportedly have already mapped out the finish of every match at WrestleMania 28.

Question on Everybody's Mind: Should we expect any crappy finishes?

Our Take: Aside from someone winning that you are rooting against—like everyone on Team Johnny—WrestleMania is going to be all about epic matches that provide clear, concise winners. It is the one show of the year where we are virtually guaranteed that happening.

Hype Meter: 5 out of 5 Reasons Everything Will Be Okay

WWE had a clear plan for WrestleMania, or at least the top matches, and actually followed through with it. That is why we have had three strong feuds to build everything else around. It doesn't matter what happens with the other five matches, as long as the top three deliver on the promise they have.

THE ROCK AND JOHN CENA TRADE JABS IN MIAMI HERALD

After all the smoke has been cleared, there really is nothing for Rock and Cena to do in order to convince the world to buy this show or hype the match. They did their best to add some hype to the fight with small jabs in interviews with the Miami Herald

Question on Everybody's Mind: Will the hype machine make this the biggest show ever?

Our Take: It all comes down to how much people believe Rock vs. Cena is the "Once In a Lifetime Battle" WWE is saying it is. Right now, it will fall just short of WrestleMania 23, which did 1.2 million buys. It will surpass last year's 1.05 million buys. Not bad news at all.

Hype Meter: 5 out of 5 WrestleMania Moments

WWE is in an interesting position with this main event. There are legitimate cases to be made for both men to win, but what does it really mean if they do? That is a question we will only know after the show is over.

Rock Losing To Cena Makes No Sense For WWE (B/R)

Rock and Cena Interviews (Miami Herald)

-------------------------------------------------------------

SHEAMUS SAYS JOHN CENA WILL SMACK DOWN THE ROCK

Sheamus took time out of his busy schedule to do an interview with the Baltimore Sun, in which he said that he supports Cena in the main event of WrestleMania 28.

Question on Everybody's Mind: Why does Sheamus hate The Rock?

Our Take: Hey, give Sheamus credit, at least he acknowledged that he doesn't have any petty animosity towards Rock. But he does admit that Cena being there day-in and day-out will give him the edge.

Hype Meter: 5 out of 5 Pale Force Members

Given how much everyone is saying that Cena is going to win or has to win because he is going to be in WWE, it could be a red herring meant to throw you off the scent for when Rock does win. We will find out Sunday.

MIKE TYSON TO BE A SOCIAL MEDIA AMBASSADOR

If you loved WWE and Twitter before this weekend, get ready because WrestleMania is going to have "Iron" Mike Tyson providing reports from Miami all weekend. He will be tweeting from all the festivities this weekend.

Question on Everybody's Mind: Where can I find Mike Tyson on Twitter?

Our Take: Here is the link to his profile. Unfortunately he has been fairly toned down on the social media website, so don't expect to get anything too crazy or outlandish. But it is Tyson, so you never know.

Hype Meter: 5 out of 5 Social Media Ventures

While WWE's touting Twitter success is the most pointless exercise ever, give the company credit for trying to sell the world on how important it really is to business success. At least Tyson should provide a few entertaining quips over the next three days.

NFL Rumors: Former Pro Bowl DT Marcus Stroud Linked to Denver Broncos

What should the Denver Broncos do about the gaping hole in the middle of their defense?

Why don't they pursue a Pro Bowl defensive tackle whom the Broncos coaching staff has some experience with?

Those are the rumors circulating around the Broncos at the close of free agency as teams are now focusing their attention on draft day.

Fox Sports Insider Alex Marvez reports that three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Marcus Stroud is hoping to make an NFL comeback in 2012. Stroud is a beast at 6'6" and 310 pounds.

Stroud, who will be 34-years-old in June, was released by the New England Patriots last offseason after the lockout prohibited him from rehabbing his surgically-repaired shoulder.  According to Stroud, he then contracted a staph infection, which required additional surgery.

While the recovery has been slow going even 10 months later, Stroud indicates that his shoulder is at about "60 percent", and he believes that June would be a perfect target date to be fully ready to go for an NFL season.

Stroud's connection to the Broncos is his former head coach from the Jacksonville Jaguars, new Denver defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio. Under Del Rio's tutelage, Stroud and teammate John Henderson proved to be a formidable force in the middle of the defensive line in the mid-2000's while together in Jacksonville.

If fully recovered, Stroud, teamed with Ty Warren, could become a force in the run game, an area he has excelled at throughout his career.

In his glory days, Stroud was a run-stuffing specialist, an area of desperate need on defense for the Broncos. Denver has yet to find a premiere run-stopping tackle during John Fox's short tenure.

There are many benefits to having a veteran force in the middle for the Broncos' youthful defensive line. Stroud likely would not be in on every down and could be more of a situational defensive player, but alongside a young guy drafted in the first round, he could help groom an up-and-coming protégé.

After the surgeries and the increase in age, the Broncos likely would be able to get Stroud at a bargain price, and if he never fully recovered, they could release him without incurring much of a salary cap hit.

This is a low-risk, no-brainer move in my opinion.

Denver needs this guy.

Incident Tech's gTar gets teased, remains largely silent (video)

Image
What you see above is the gTar, an upcoming electronic musical instrument from Bay Area-based startup, Incident Technologies. It's got what appears to be an iPhone docked in the pick-guard and it looks pretty cool lit up in the teaser video after the break. Beyond that, there's not a ton of information about the thing available online, but we did some digging and have pieced together a pretty good idea about the thing. The device made an appearance at South by Southwest earlier this month, and bits and pieces have made their way into the web by way of startup site AngelList and social networks like Facebook, Twitter and, of course, YouTube. A posting on the former describes it as "a consumer electronics device that enables an interactive music entertainment experience to anyone without any kind of previous musical knowledge."

From the looks of it, the thing is a little bit Guitar Apprentice and a little bit Tabber. Unlike the plasticky Guitar Apprentice, however, this device looks like a genuine guitar (strings and all), albeit one with a light up fretboard for Tabber-like educational purposes and a "docked mobile device." The guitar also makes it possible to share music socially, though it's not entirely clear whether this is accomplished via the docked smartphone or an external output like a PC, though given the company's connections to the developer community, we suspect that both will be options, be it through built-in functionality or available APIs. The gTar is also being positioned as a music creation device, rather than simply an educational tool (à la Tabber) or a simple overblown Guitar Hero-style controller.

Check out a flashy, if rather uninformative teaser after the break.
