RIM details BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10: IT guys get a single web console for their various tools

We already knew that RIM was readying a new version of its BlackBerry Enterprise Server to ship alongside the first BB10 devices in early 2013. Today, the company detailed the package, formally known as BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10. The big story here is that already-existing IT tools like BlackBerry Mobile Fusion, BlackBerry Device Service and Universal Device Service will be accessible from a single web console. The company also clarified that BlackBerry Device Service and Universal Device Service can run off separate servers, or just one. Take note, though, that the older BES 5+ will still need its own server for the time being. As we previously reported, too, the newest version of BES will offer legacy support to older devices -- specifically, it can support PlayBook tablets, phones running BlackBerry 7 OS or higher as well as iOS and Android devices.

Exercise Can Help Cancer Patients, But Few Oncologists Suggest It

Numerous studies have shown the powerful effect that exercise can have on cancer care and recovery. For patients who have gone through breast or colon cancer treatment, regular exercise has been found to reduce recurrence of the disease by up to 50 percent. But many cancer patients are reluctant to exercise, and few discuss it with their oncologists, according to a Mayo Clinic study published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management...

The Queue: Even more patch 5.0.4 Q&A

Welcome back to The Queue, the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Adam Holisky (@adamholisky) will be your host today.

I've been through nearly all the pre-expansion patches with The Queue, and I don't think I've ever seen as many questions come in about the patch mechanics and game systems. Even in Cataclysm when the world was entirely redone, there wasn't this much.

Sometimes I feel that the quality and quantity of questions in The Queue relates directly to the interest level in a patch, so I'm wondering if you all have seen a lot of old guildies and WoW friends log back on lately. I know that I've seen my fair share. The D3 changes have also brought people back, which is great.

Anyway, on to questions!

Pedro asked:

When will we be able to do pet battles?

Gnome-flavored Ubuntu desktop environment coming for purest purists

Gnome

If you're a Linux user squarely in the Gnome desktop camp and sneer with disdain at the mention of Unity, there's good news -- your preferred flavor is coming, uncontaminated, to Ubuntu. Though "GNOMEBuntu" was originally floated as a name for the new environment, that idea was apparently kiboshed by the Gnome Foundation, leaving "GNOBuntu" and "Gnubuntu" as possible monikers, according to Mutkware. Neither Unity, nor cloud service Ubuntu One will be included in the distro, but you'll find a library of apps pre-installed, including the Epiphany browser and Rhythmbox music player. Customized settings will let you further tweak the purity level to suit your zeal -- so, if you're thinking about grabbing the upcoming alpha, check the source for more info.

TiVo Stream iOS transcoder box due September 6th

Earlier this year, TiVo unveiled the TiVo Stream, a streaming media device that sends TiVo content to your iPad and iPhone. TiVo had a prototype of the device at CES 2012 and later confirmed the Stream would land this summer. Now that the summer is over, the company is ready to kick off sales of the device in early September, says a report in AllThingsD.

The TiVo Stream is an external device that connects to your TiVo Premiere or Premiere Q DVR and streams content to a mobile device, which currently is the iPhone and iPad. Customers can watch recorded content and even download shows to their iOS device for offline viewing. TiVo Stream also serves up the channel guide and lets customers watch their favorite TV show live.

According to AllThingsD, the TiVo Stream will be available starting September 6 for $130. The device will initially go on sale at Tivo.com and then land at Best Buy in the following weeks. It requires a TiVo Premiere set-top box and a TiVo subscription.

WWE: Outside Tag Teams That Could Help Save Company's Floundering Division

To say that the WWE's tag-team division is underwhelming would be the understatement of the year. The random team of Kofi Kingston and R-Truth currently holds the titles and of the four teams vying against them for the straps currently, none of them are legitimate contenders.

It seems like the writers are trying to do something with the division ahead of Night of Champions with the Prime Time Players, Primo and Epico, Justin Gabriel and Tyson Kidd and The Usos trying to get involved in the title picture. The fact of the matter is that the fans don't care, though, because they don't connect with any of those teams.

The WWE could still have a solid tag division if it were to commit to one, but it would probably take some outside help. With that in mind, here are three teams that the WWE could potentially bring in to spark its barren tag-team scene.

Dudley Boyz

Bully Ray has blossomed as a singles competitor and Devon is the Television Champion in TNA, but it seems as though they may each be heading for greener pastures in the near future. According to ProWrestling.net, their contracts are set to expire at the same time and Devon has already announced that he won't be back with the company. There is no word on Bully Ray yet, but indications are that he hasn't re-signed.

If Bully Ray joins Devon and does in fact leave TNA, then returning to the WWE could be a real possibility. If both of them want to remain relevant, then WWE is the only real option. They could go to ROH or other independent promotions such as Extreme Rising, but they aren't going to receive much exposure if they do. Going back to Japan is also a possibility, but I'm not sure how much they enjoyed their time there.

The Dudleys had a fantastic six-year run in WWE as a team and even as individuals. So if the money is right, I believe they would jump ship. The only thing that could stop a Dudley reunion is the fact that Bully Ray has made a lot of headway as an individual, but they might enjoy the challenge of helping to rebuild the WWE's tag division. Hopefully that is the case and Team 3D reigns supreme once again in the WWE.

Briscoe Brothers

With tag-team divisions failing in the WWE, TNA, and many other promotions across the United States, there honestly aren't many legitimate teams that are still together. Because of that the Briscoe Brothers, Jay and Mark, are head and shoulders above anyone else. The Briscoes have worked almost exclusively for Ring of Honor since its inception in 2002 and may very well be the best team in the company's history with seven Tag Team Championship reigns.

It's rare that a team lasts as long as the Briscoes have in this day and age, but they have persevered and are the true definition of a tag team. I wouldn't say that the Briscoes are well known by casual wrestling fans, but the diehards are the ones who generally want a better tag division anyway, so signing them would be a great move by WWE.

They have a great Southern gimmick, are solid in the ring and can both cut promos, which isn't something you often see with tag-team wrestling. I feel like most fans are tired of the WWE randomly pairing two guys together and calling it a tag team, so going out and getting an established, legitimate team would make a ton of sense.

New Age Outlaws

They may be 48 and 43 years of age respectively, but Billy Gunn and the Road Dogg are considered by many to be one of the best tag teams in WWE history. As the New Age Outlaws, Gunn and Road Dogg won the WWE Tag Team Championships on five occasions and were one of the most over teams ever. Not only could they both work in the ring, but their charisma and mic skills, particularly Road Dogg's, really helped the fans get behind them.

The New Age Outlaws made a one-night-only return on the 1,000th episode of RAW as they joined Shawn Michaels, Triple H and X-Pac in a D-Generation X reunion. It went over really well with the crowd and prompted some fans to wonder aloud whether one last run could be in the cards for the New Age Outlaws.

Road Dogg is already employed by the company and Gunn is obviously on good terms, and with Triple H running the show in terms of talent evaluation, I'm sure he could make it happen with the snap of his fingers. Road Dogg was a surprise entrant in the Royal Rumble and looked good, while Gunn appeared to be in excellent shape on RAW 1,000. Obviously they wouldn't be exactly the same as they were more than a decade ago, but the New Age Outlaws are a pairing that the fans connect with and they would definitely revitalize the WWE's tag division.

It can lead to severe neurological handicap and death for the patient and it is associated with great costs for society. Sound good? Well, the unit will arrive sometime in September ready to dock your wallet $119.99. For a closer look or a bit more info, consult the gallery below and full PR after the break.

Amazon reportedly licenses Nokia mapping technologies for Kindle Fire successor

Amazon reportedly licenses Nokia mapping technologies for Kindle Fire successor

It looks like Nokia's strategy to become the go-to company for location-based services is gaining traction, as anonymous sources of Reuters suggest that Amazon will tap the Finnish company to provide mapping data for its upcoming tablet. The report contends that location-aware features will be core to Amazon's Kindle Fire successor, which is widely expected to debut on September 6th. If true, the move represents a continuation of Amazon's desire to create an ecosystem that's far removed from Google own content offerings. On the plus side, it brings the possibility that some excellent offline navigation capabilities may be in the pipeline. Whatever the case may be, we're sure to know the truth very shortly.

NASA completes successful parachute drop simulation for Orion spacecraft

NASA completes successful parachute drop simulation of Orion spacecraft

NASA has always used the desert as its own personal playground, and we'd imagine that its team had a blast in Arizona yesterday, as a mock parachute compartment of the Orion spacecraft was dropped from 25,000 feet above Earth. The dart-shaped object experienced free fall for 5,000 feet, at which point, drogue chutes were deployed at 20,000 feet. This was then followed by pilot chutes, which then activated the main chutes. As you'd imagine, these things are monsters: the main parachutes -- three in all -- each measure 116 feet wide and weigh more than 300 pounds. Better yet, the mission was successful.

Naturally, all of this is in preparation for Orion's first test flight -- currently scheduled for 2014 -- where the unmanned craft will travel 15 times further than the ISS and jam through space at 20,000 mph before returning to Earth. Yesterday's outing is merely one in a series of drop tests, and yes, it's important to remove any unknowns from the situation: eventually, humans will be along for the ride.

Travels through Azeroth and Outland returns

Travels through Azeroth and Outland returns
Travels through Azeroth and Outland was a player-penned travelogue through all of World of Warcraft's zones, written from the perspective of a canny Forsaken narrator with a good eye for the local culture (to the extent that places like Hellfire Peninsula could be said to have "local culture"). It was easily one of the best, most unsettling, and most thought-provoking pieces of fan fiction we've ever read, and it amassed a significant group of fans among players and Blizzard alike. It even has its own TV Tropes entry. Unfortunately for us, its author Zac finished all of the zones in the game through Wrath of the Lich King content and then left to focus on graduate school.

But it's back! Zac will be updating the travelogue with Cataclysm content, starting with his recent entry on Kezan. It examines the city itself and the story of the Bilgewater Cartel's entry to the Horde, but it also contains a few, shall we say, anthropological observations. ("I was relieved that no one died in the (footbomb) game I watched, a sentiment not shared by the audience.") You can hop into the travelogue at any point and get a feel for what Destron Allicant, its narrator, is all about, but I would recommend starting from the very beginning. Trust me: It will change how you experience the game, and for the better.

We've interviewed Zac previously, and if you're interested in getting some background information on how he's written the series, you'll find related articles here:

Windows Phone 8 may land October 29th

Word on the street is that Windows Phone 8 will get its official launch on October 29th. When asked for confirmation, Microsoft issued a pretty standard "no comment," which leads us to believe there might actually be something to this rumor. With Windows 8 slated to land on October 26th, we wouldn't be surprised to see its portable counterpart hit the market just a few days later, as ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley is suggesting. October is already expected to be a rather hectic month for Microsoft, with launch of countless Windows 8 tablets scheduled. Putting WP8 out alongside its first batch of handsets (hello ATIV S!) would only make sense, really. We can think of a reason or two that Microsoft might want to utterly dominate a few news cycles.

BBC iPlayer adds radio support to Xbox app

BBC iPlayer adds radio support to Xbox app

Well, they certainly made you wait for it, but the BBC has finally delivered on its promise, bringing radio support to its Xbox 360 app. When iPlayer launched on the console in March, patient customers were initially left without access to the national network's vast catalog of audio programming. With today's 22MB update that changes, but only so long as you're sticking with archived materials. You'll have access to the catch up feature, but no live streaming (so don't expect to get your breaking news through your Xbox). You'll also be able to pick up where you left off with previously accessed programs. If you've got an urge to find out about all the work that went into the UI design, hit up the source.

Google lands patent for automatic object recognition in videos, leaves no stone untagged

Google lands patent for automatic object recognition in videos, leaves no stone untagged

Google has already been working on patents that could pick out faces and song melodies in our YouTube clips. Now, it might just have the ultimate tool: the technique in a just-granted patent could pick out objects in a video, whether they're living or not. Instead of asking the creator to label objects every time, Google proposes using a database of "feature vectors" such as color, movement, shape and texture to automatically identify subjects in the frame through their common traits -- a cat's ears and fast movement would separate it from the ball of yarn it's attacking, for example. Movie makers themselves could provide a lot of the underlying material just by naming and tagging enough of their clips, with the more accurate labels helping to separate the wheat from the chaff if an automated visual ranking system falls short. The one mystery is what Google plans to do with its newfound observational skills, if anything, although the most logical step would be to fill in YouTube keywords without any user intervention -- a potential time-saver when we're uploading that twelfth consecutive pet video.

The terse teaser is bundled after the break, but until the GPS maven opens up about its new platform, we'll just have to be patient.

Jury finds Samsung guilty of infringing on Apple's patents, awards Apple $1.05 billion in damages (updated)

A California jury has found Samsung guilty of infringing on Apple's patents, resulting in damages totaling more than $1.05 billion to be awarded to Apple. The verdict is broken down as follows:

Update: Samsung was found guilty of willfully infringing on Apple's patent relating to scrollback, one for multitouch gestures, one for zooming, a design patent and a patent related to icons. The Wall Street Journal reports in its liveblog that the jury also found Samsung guilty of inducing its subsidiaries to infringe on Apple's patents.

The jury said that Samsung did not infringe on Apple's patent for tablet design. It did uphold Apple's validity for all its patents, and Samsung's validity for all its patents.

The jury has ordered that Samsung pay more than $1.05 billion in damages for the infringement. It said that Apple did not violate any of Samsung's patents and will not pay any damages to Samsung.

The verdict reading is on-going. The jury reached it around 2:35 Pacific Time.

The verdict comes hours after a South Korean court found that Apple and Samsung had infringed on each other's patents in that country. In addition to ordering monetary damages be paid, the court banned sales of the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and the first two generations of iPads, along with various Samsung products.

University of Victoria's Mano underwater robot to prowl Arctic waters for legendary ships

University of Victoria's Mano underwater robot to prowl Arctic waters for legendary ships

Canadians well-versed in their history are very aware of Sir John Franklin's ill-fated 1845 expedition to find the Northwest Passage: a British voyage that set out to establish a sailing route through the Arctic and ended with the untimely, mysterious deaths of its two ship crews. No human ever found the abandoned ships, which makes it all the more fitting that the next best shot at discovery might come through a just-launched autonomous underwater vehicle from the University of Victoria and Bluefin Robotics. Meet the Mano, a new sonar-toting robot that can produce detailed undersea maps all by its lonesome while keeping a steady altitude above the ocean floor. It can only operate for 12 hours at a time, which will keep humans in the area, but its ability to run untethered below storms and cold Arctic winds should dramatically expand the territory that researchers can cover during their share of a larger five- to six-week journey. There's no guarantee that the Mano will hit the jackpot, or find something recognizable even if it does. Still, any mapping should improve navigation for modern boats -- and hopefully prevent others from sharing Sir Franklin's fate.

Get ready for hurricane season with CaneCast

With the hurricane season upon us, you might be looking for a way to get detailed information about the impact a storm may have on you. Fear not: there are plenty of hurricane apps for the iPhone. Some are from newspapers and TV stations rebranding National Weather Service info, while others have unique features that are worthy of note.

One app I personally like is CaneCast Hurricane Forecaster. It's a US$0.99 app for the iPhone that allows you to monitor current storms, get their exact position in relation to your location, provides a storm track and advises you what the forecast storm classification is at each point on its track.

CaneCast can also provide push notifications when a storm forms or becomes a full-fledged hurricane. There are solid maps, with a variety of radar overlays. One unique feature of CaneCast is wind risk data for any location.

I don't currently live in an area threatened by hurricanes, but lived many years in Florida where life-threatening storms are something you never get used to. I wish I'd had an app like this back then, because power tends to go off during these storms, and it's all too easy to be isolated from important information.

If you live in a hurricane area or just want to follow storms like Isaac (which is forming quickly this week), this is the app for you.

Some sample screens from activity today are in the gallery below.
