Neglected Rolls-Royce Phantom may be the saddest of all time

Worst Rolls Royce Ever

Rolls-Royce prides itself on exemplifying the pinnacle of automotive elegance. The brand is synonymous with quality and luxury. However, in the end even a Rolls is still just a car, and if you don't keep it up, it's bound to fail. That deterioration can be seriously fun to watch, though.

This 2005 Rolls-Royce Phantom might now be one of the worst cars on the planet and only has a little over 95,000 miles on it. The video claims that the original owner in New Jersey didn't make payments on the car for three years but rented the sedan out to people and used it for a livery service. Now, it's repossessed and would probably cost more to fix than it's worth.

This Phantom has had a hard life. We don't want to spoil too many of the broken pieces because they pile up to become increasingly absurd. However, the pièce de résistance must to be the broken Spider-Man umbrella in the door.

Warning, there is some explicit language in the otherwise hilarious video; scroll down to watch this automotive travesty.

Health Benefits of Tea

Tea is one of the most popular drinks due to its pleasant taste and perceived health effects. Although health benefits have been attributed to tea consumption since the beginning of its history, scientific investigation of this beverage and its constituents has been under way for about 30 years. WoW Moviewatch: Gnometheus -- Fire Of The Gods

Okay, what we have here seems to be a gnome lore heavy machinima involving the curse of flesh, it's up to four episodes. I'm in love with this thing on a purely conceptual level. It's interesting in that it's not really a machinima at all, for the most part - it's told through narrative over still images from the game. It kind of ends up feeling strangely like a documentary as a result of this, some strange Ken Burns presents Gnomes feel that I'm not sure if I like or not.

However, anything that encourages people to do things with gnomes is a-okay in my book, and the first episode also talks about tauren, so I'm pretty much forced to endorse it. Gnomes and tauren. Throw a draenei in there and I'm down for the whole series.

Vitamin D and assisted reproduction technologies: current concepts

Accumulating evidence from animal and human studies suggests that vitamin D is involved in many functions of the human reproductive system in both genders, but no comprehensive analysis of the potential relationship between vitamin D status and Assisted Reproduction Technologies (ART) outcomes is currently available. On this basis, the purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to perform an in-depth evaluation of clinical studies assessing whether vitamin D status of patients undergoing ART could be related to cycle outcome variables. This issue is of interest considering that vitamin D deficiency is easily amenable to correction and oral vitamin D supplementation is cheap and without significant side effects. Surprisingly, no studies are currently available assessing vitamin D status among male partners of couples undergoing ART, while seven studies on vitamin D status of women undergoing controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) for ART were found and included in the review. Results show that vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent among women undergoing COH, ranging from 21% to 31% across studies conducted in Western countries and reaching 75-99% in Iranian studies. Data on vitamin D deficiency (25-hydroxyvitamin D serum levels <20 ng/ml) in relation to ART outcomes could be extracted from three studies and included in the meta-analysis, yielding a common risk ratio (RR) of 0.89 (95% CI 0.53-1.49) and showing a lower but not statistically significant likelihood of clinical pregnancy for vitamin-D-deficient women compared with vitamin-D-sufficient patients. In conclusion, there is insufficient evidence to support the routine assessment of vitamin D status to predict the clinical pregnancy rate in couples undergoing ART. The partly conflicting results of the available studies, potentially explaining the lack of statistical significance for a negative influence of vitamin D deficiency on clinical pregnancy rate, are likely secondary to confounders and insufficient sample size, and further larger cohort and randomised controlled studies are required.

Report: Indiana Pacers Plan to Keep Frank Vogel as Head Coach

There's a lot of blame to be handed out after the Indiana Pacers' late-season collapse was wrapped up by a 25-point loss to the Miami Heat in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals.

You can point to Paul George for failing to carry his team like a true superstar might. You can look at Roy Hibbert for declining rapidly and becoming a lumbering liability on both ends of the court. You can blame Lance Stephenson for his childish antics. You can shake your head at the ineffectiveness of the team's lackluster bench.

There's enough blame to go around, after all.

Frank Vogel deserves a slice of scapegoat pie as well, thanks to his inability to design effective offensive sets or keep his team playing at its full capabilities during the portion of the season that actually mattered.

But that won't result in him looking for work during the offseason, per Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski:

Either decision the team made would be understandable, though retaining him for another year is the right call.

After all, firing Vogel would be tantamount to forgetting about the stellar first half of the season, overlooking that the team was so good it could become inept and still earn the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference. Even though he undoubtedly has his shortcomings, the head coach still built a stellar defense in Indiana and kept his troops motivated throughout the season.

It should say something that the Pacers were 3-0 in elimination games this postseason before running into the Miami buzz saw. Granted, two of those contests came against the middling Atlanta Hawks, but it was still an impressive way to go up against adversity.

Further evidence has surfaced of Vogel's job potentially being safe all along, via Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated:

You can also count Erik Spoelstra among the supporters of his coaching adversary.

As Bleacher Report's Sean Hojnacki wrote after Game 6, "While the team could still decide to go in a different direction, a new coach would hardly act as a panacea since the roster clearly needs tweaking."

That's the root of the Pacers' problems, and trying to find a new coach could more easily make things worse than it could improve them. It's a better alternative to seek out an offensively minded assistant coach who can inject some creativity into Indiana's stagnant half-court sets while milking something out of the struggling second unit.

The Pacers have plenty of decisions to make throughout the 2014 offseason. Apparently, none of them will center around Vogel, and that's good news for the organization.

Behold Placeholder, Blessed Holder of Places

Admiral Placeholder
A new Warlords of Draenor alpha build went live yesterday. Along with the usual assortment of new creature models, maps, icons, and class changes, datamining revealed perhaps the single greatest sword in Azeroth's history: Placeholder, Blessed Holder of Places.

The Placeholder name has a storied place in WoW's history. Long ago in the original beta, an NPC named Captain Placeholder teleported players from Menethil Harbor to Auberdine before the transport ships had been created. He triumphantly returned to live realms for a time after a bug broke the ships. Years later, he showed up in the Cataclysm beta as Cap'n Placeholder, though he served no purpose and never appeared in the release version of the expansion. An NPC conversation in Menethil harbor spoke of him as an Alliance hero, stating "Nobody could hold a place like him. Nobody."

In the Mists beta, a newly promoted Adm'rl Placeholder once again saved the day. He transported players from Orgrimmar and Stormwind to the Valley of the Four Winds while the Jade Forest zone was closed for remodeling.

Is Placeholder the famous captain's sword? What item will it become? Why is it marked as junk? Why does it stack to 20, and what "reward not yet complete" will eventually find its way into our backpacks? A future patch will reveal all! Until then, hold a place in your heart for this amazing sword.

Around Azeroth: Full frontal moo-dity

Does it really count as being naked if you're covered in fur? This, and other existential questions, will be pondered by submitter Artoo of Total Annihilation on Twisting Nether (EU-H) as soon as he gets some rest. It's hot in the jungles of Pandaria, and the natives seem more interested in devising new and exciting ways to get drunk than inventing any sort of air conditioning that would make life more pleasant for them and other hairy creatures. No wonder he has to sleep in his underwear.

2015 Volkswagen GTI

2015 Volkswagen GTI

The whine of the turbocharger. The gentle whoosh of the hatchback's hydraulic lift supports. The mechanical ratcheting and clack of the parking brake. The growling exhaust note with that occasional gurgle.

The unmistakable sounds of the modern hot hatch are just one of the genre's delightful qualities. This class of car, beloved by enthusiasts for its amplitude of sensory stimulants, low curb weights, potent engines and superior handling, traces its lineage directly back to the MkI Volkswagen GTI, which debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show back in 1975. Upon its unveiling, the GTI was a near-instant success, spawning its own subclass of vehicle - a basic, mass-market commuter vehicle with a high performance package - as well as a plethora of new hot hatch suitors from automakers like Ford, Peugeot, Renault and Fiat.

Since that day nearly 40 years ago, the GTI has won awards, fended off rivals, undergone numerous tweaks, nips, tucks, redesigns and refreshes, but rarely lost its way. The GTI has always, first and foremost, provided its owners with an entertaining, confident driving demeanor full of those wonderful sights, smells and, of course, sounds, all for an attainable price.

We've been waiting a long time for our first crack at a US-spec model (it's been on sale over in Europe for some time now and we actually first drove an overseas-spec example over a year ago), but that day has finally arrived. Has it been worth the wait?

College Baseball Regionals 2014: Day 1 Results, Highlights and Analysis

Friday's opening day of the College Baseball World Series regionals is in the books, and the road to Omaha is one step closer to being paved for the nation's top teams.

None of the 64 teams in the NCAA baseball tournament have yet been eliminated, as it's a double-elimination format. But with elimination games set for each region on Saturday, the field will soon be getting smaller and smaller.

All of the teams opened up play on Friday. Well, except for the Oxford regional that is, as Ole Miss, Jacksonville State, Georgia Tech and Washington will all wait until Saturday to play, per NCAA Baseball:

Let's look at the complete list of final scores from Friday's games and break down the biggest results.

Note: Results courtesy of NCAA.com.

Notable Results

Kansas Gets Past Kentucky in Opener

Both the Kansas Jayhawks and Kentucky Wildcats enter the Louisville regional with subpar odds of advancing out of the four-team bracket, which made Friday's opener all the more important in getting an early leg up.

The game's intensity reflected the high stakes. Three runs in the first inning from each team set the tone for an offensive slugfest.

Kansas jumped ahead again by three runs in the second, but after notching one run in the third, a two-RBI single from Thomas Bernal in the fourth tied things up at 6-6.

Then things turned into a pitching duel, and it was the Jayhawks once again who went ahead—this time for good, as two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings completed the 10-6 victory.

NCAA Baseball captured the Jayhawks' win:

Louisville's dominating win over Kent State means that Kansas will face the hosting Cardinals on Saturday with the winner starting 2-0 and the loser coming within one game of elimination.

Meanwhile, Kentucky could see its season end if the Wildcats lose to Kent State.

Oregon Bats Light Up Clemson

With more regular-season runs than any other Pac-12 team, the Oregon Ducks' offensive prowess was already well-known heading into the NCAA baseball regionals.

After Friday, Oregon's bats should never again be questioned.

Oregon exploded for a dozen-and-a-half runs in an 18-1 rout of Clemson to open up play in the Nashville, Tennessee, regional.

The Tigers actually jumped on top to start things out with one run in the first inning. But it was all the offense that Clemson would find all game with only four more hits for the final eight innings.

It took a little bit of time for Oregon to get going as Clemson's pitching was hot early, but the Ducks jumped on the Tigers with a three-run second inning. Matthew Crownover conceding eight runs didn't help, as the Ducks went off for 15 runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings combined.

The game returned to a pitcher's duel through the final three innings, but the damage had already been done. Clemson's chances of victory were thwarted in the course of a 15-run, three-inning spurt.

As if the Tigers' loss wasn't bad enough, 247 Sports' Noles247.com reminded folks of dual-sport standout Jameis Winston and Florida State inflicting a similar beating on Clemson:

Games between No. 2 and No. 3 seeds always figure to be tight battles in the opening of the NCAA baseball regionals, as they're typically similarly talented schools and both are playing away from home. This game, however, was far from even.

After the victory, Oregon moves on to face Vanderbilt, as the hosts topped Xavier to close out Day 1 of play in Nashville. The Musketeers will play Clemson with the loser being eliminated.

Mississippi State Wins, Takes Upper Hand in Lafayette Regional

The initial draw for the NCAA baseball tournament intrigued many across the state of Mississippi as Ole Miss and Mississippi State—bitter SEC West and in-state rivals—could potentially meet in the super regional round.

But before that, the Bulldogs have to advance out of the Lafayette regional, and they took a huge step in that direction with a 5-2 win over San Diego State on Friday.

GoAztecs.com tweeted out the highlights:

San Diego State actually struck first with two runs in the top half of the second inning, but the Bulldogs didn't waste any time in responding. Four runs in the bottom half of the inning saw Mississippi State to a lead that it wouldn't relinquish.

After giving up two runs in the second, pitcher Trevor Fitts rebounded in the next three innings. He only gave up one hit through that final span, then gave up the mound to Myles Gentry.

Gentry did the rest. He pitched the final four innings, all without conceding a single baserunner.

Heading down the stretch, the Bulldogs padded their lead with a run in the fifth to give them a 5-2 lead that would eventually see them to an easy victory.

The Bulldogs won again on Friday in another sense. Louisiana-Lafayette's early 1-0 defeat to Jackson State means that the Ragin' Cajuns could be eliminated before Mississippi State even has to play them.

If Mississippi State takes care of Jackson State on Saturday, its dream matchup with Ole Miss in the super regional would be one step closer to fruition.

Bad Day for National Seeds

Although it eventually got a bit better, Friday didn't shape up to be a strong one for the top eight national seeds.

In fact, it was a historically bad performance from the only eight teams to receive national seeds. After only one loss over the last five years, two of the first four teams went down, per NCAA Baseball:

The first national seed to go down was Louisiana-Lafayette. The No. 6 overall seed in the nation came into the tournament with a sterling 53-7 record, but the Ragin' Cajuns suffered defeat No. 8 for the season in a 1-0 loss to Jackson State—loss No. 9 will end their season.

Florida State was the next national seed to tumble, as the overall fifth-seeded Seminoles were beaten soundly in front of their home fans in a 7-0 defeat.

The national seeds saw their fortune improve later on in the day, but all in all, it was a poor performance from the top seeds.

Effectiveness of an improved road safety policy in Ethiopia: an interrupted time series study

Background:
In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in implementing road safety policy by different low income countries. However; the evidence is scarce on its success in the reduction of crashes, injuries and deaths. This study was conducted to assess whether road crashes, injuries and fatalities was reduced following the road safety regulation introduced as of September 2007 by Oromia Regional State Transport Bureau.
Methods:
Routine road traffic accident data for the year 2002-2011were collected from sixteen traffic police offices. Data on average daily vehicle flow was obtained from the Ethiopian Road Authority. Interrupted time series design using segmented linear regression model was applied to estimate the effect of an improved road safety policy.
Results:
A total of 4,053 crashes occurred on Addis Ababa - Adama/ Hawassa main road. Of these crashes, almost half 46.4% (1,880) were property damage, 29.4% (1,193) were fatal and 24.2% (980) injury crashes, resulting 1,392 fatalities and 1,749 injuries. There were statistically significant reductions in non-injury crashes and deaths. Non-injury crash was reduced by 19% and fatality by 12.4% in the first year of implementing the revised transport safety regulation.
Conclusion:
Although revised road safety policy helped in reducing motor vehicle crashes and associated fatalities, the overall incidence rate is still very high. Further action is required to avoid unnecessary loss of lives.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution will live through 2015

2013 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X, front three-quarter view.

If it were only so easy for humans. Mitsubishi has extended the life of the Lancer Evolution X by at least a year. An MMNA spokesperson tells AutoGuide that it is "committed to introducing the 2015 model year Lancer Evolution," noting that production for said models will begin in July. This gives us a year of clarity about the future of a model whose future blinks in and out of existence quicker than a boson particle.

As far as we can tell, the Evo as we know it is definitely going to die, the question is when. In March, Mitsubishi said it "does not have any plans to design a successor with the current concept, as a high-performance four-wheel drive gasoline-powered sedan." What is rumored to fill the hole left by the Evo might or might not be a linear descendent, but is expected to be some kind of hybridized high-performance model about which much has been speculated.

MMNA PR manager Alex Fedorak told Autoblog, "Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is committed to introducing the 2015 model year Lancer Evolution in the U.S. Production of North American-specification Lancer Evolution models for the 2015 model year will commence in July 2014." Our previous advice still stands, however, even with the extension: If you want one, get an Evo while you can.

How Sean Lee Injury Affects the Dallas Cowboys Defense Heading into 2014 Season

When Dallas Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee tore his ACL on the first day of OTAs, it was clearly a blow to the defense in "Big D." Lee is a big-time playmaker who, when healthy, has shown the ability to dominate games.

In addition to being such an impactful player, one of the reasons the Cowboys will miss Lee is because there’s a big drop-off behind him.

The Cowboys could realistically be relying on a fourth-round rookie in Anthony Hitchens to be the keystone of their linebacker corps as the “Mike” LB, which obviously isn’t an ideal situation.

So, how much will the ‘Boys miss Lee?

Lee's Value to Dallas

Let’s start with assessing Lee’s dominance. Looking at stats from Pro Football Focus (subscription required), we see that Lee made a tackle on 12.0 percent of his snaps last season, which is a really high number.

Actually, ESPN Stats & Info indicates that only four linebackers have surpassed Lee’s tackle rate of 9.2 percent over the last four years.

Furthermore, despite all of the time he missed, not a single linebacker tallied more than Lee’s 11 interceptions in that span. He always seemed to be in the right place at the right time—a true high-IQ football player.

How Has Dallas Performed Without Lee?

One of the ways to determine how poorly off the Cowboys will be without Lee is to look at how they’ve performed in his absence in the past. Lee has missed 15 games over the past two seasons, so I looked back and compared those games to the contests in which Lee played.

First, take a look at the total first downs allowed by Dallas.

There’s barely a difference, but Dallas has actually allowed 0.3 more first downs with Lee in the lineup as opposed to when he’s been out. That’s surprising.

Next, take a look at the yards allowed by Dallas.

The biggest area where the Cowboys could potentially miss Lee is in the running game. His tackle rate is a reflection of his prowess as a run defender, and the Cowboys have allowed 13 fewer rushing yards per game with Lee in the lineup.

Perhaps surprisingly to some, however, the Cowboys have yielded fewer passing yards per game when Lee has been injured—24 fewer per game, actually.

That means that as a defense, the Cowboys have allowed fewer total yards per game in the 15 contests Lee missed compared to the 17 in which he played over the past two seasons.

How can that be?

You might argue that the Cowboys are just a better team with Lee in the lineup, so they win more and thus see more passing attempts as they’re leading games. That’s probably not the case, however, since the team is about equal with Lee in the lineup (9-8) as when out (7-8) in the past two years.

Moreover, there isn’t a significant difference in YPA against.

Lee Is Not an Elite Pass Defender

Lee is an All-Pro linebacker against the run and a decent linebacker in coverage. That might seem ridiculous, since Lee has a linebacker-high 11 picks in the last four years, but interceptions are notoriously volatile.

Remember cornerback Anthony Henry? He had 10 interceptions in his first NFL season, then only 10 more over the next four years.

Picks come in bunches, so grading a player’s coverage ability off them isn’t wise.

I like to use Pro Football Focus’ (subscription required) yards-per-snap metric because it gives us an idea of who is getting targeted and how well they perform when thrown at.

Here’s how many yards Lee has allowed per snap since he became a starter in Dallas.

In 2013, Lee allowed 0.88 yards per coverage snap. That ranked him as the 24th-best linebacker in the NFL—good, but not great.

In the two years prior, however, Lee allowed an average of 1.19 yards per snap, which ranked him near the bottom of the league. If we take the average of Lee’s past three seasons, he would have ranked just 41st of 51 qualifying linebackers in 2013.

What’s likelier: A decent coverage linebacker has happened upon an above-average number of picks or an elite coverage linebacker has somehow managed to turn in below-average efficiency numbers over a three-year span?

Yes, there’s something to be said for forcing turnovers. Lee’s interceptions have been huge for Dallas.

If we’re trying to determine how good Lee is in coverage, though, the yards-per-snap metric is going to give us a better idea of Lee’s true talent. The interceptions explain how valuable he’s been in the past, but the yards allowed per snap can help determine how good he’ll be in the future.

Life Without Lee

By no means am I saying that the Cowboys will be better off without Lee. He’s an outstanding linebacker and someone the team will miss in a major way.

However, it’s not like the defense can’t overcome his absence. It’s going to hurt in the running game, but don’t expect a major change in the passing game. In terms of coverage ability, you could argue that DeVonte Holloman is already on par with Lee.

From an opponent's perspective, the only advantage of Lee’s absence is that it could dare offenses to run the ball more. They’ll probably be more efficient doing it, but forcing a team to keep the ball on the ground isn’t the worst thing in the world.

It’s difficult to say for sure how much the Cowboys will miss Lee—and they will miss him—but chances are it isn’t quite the death blow many are thinking.

Seasonal genetic partitioning in the neotropical malaria vector, Anopheles darlingi

Background:
Anopheles darlingi is the main malaria mosquito vector in the Amazonia region. In spite of being considered a riverine, forest-dwelling species, this mosquito is becoming more abundant in peri-urban areas, increasing malaria risk. This has been associated with human-driven environmental changes such as deforestation.
Methods:
Microsatellites were used to characterize A. darlingi from seven localities along the Madeira River, Rondonia (Brazil), collected in the early and late periods of the rainy season.
Results:
Two genetically distinct subpopulations were detected: one (subpopulation A) was associated with the late rainfall period and seems to be ecologically closer to the typical forest A. darlingi; the other (subpopulation B) was associated with the early rainfall period and is probably more adapted to drier conditions by exploiting permanent anthropogenic breeding sites. Results suggest also a pattern of asymmetric introgression, with more subpopulation A alleles introgressed into subpopulation B. Both subpopulations (and admixed mosquitoes) presented similar malaria infection rates, highlighting the potential for perennial malaria transmission in the region.
Conclusions:
The co-occurrence of two genetically distinct subpopulations of A. darlingi adapted to different periods of rainfall may promote a more perennial transmission of malaria throughout the year. These findings, in a context of strong environmental impact due to deforestation and dam construction, have serious implications for malaria epidemiology and control in the Amazonian region.

Jay Leno's Garage drives Steve McQueen's 1956 Jaguar XKSS

1956 Jaguar XKSS

Steve McQueen might be the coolest American male of the 20th century. With movies like Bullitt and Le Mans, McQueen established himself as the king of cool of his era, and on the list of actors you would pick for a fantasy racing team - he or Paul Newman are the natural first choices. The latest Jay Leno's Garage video highlights one of McQueen's most special cars - a 1956 Jaguar XKSS.

Just 16 XKSS models were made because a fire at the Jaguar factory halted production. It was meant to be a street version of the company's very successful D-Type racer, with a modified version of its 3.4-liter straight-six-engine and a four-speed manual gearbox. McQueen clearly had an eye for great vehicles. He drove his Jag around Los Angeles years after it was a cutting-edge piece of technology. Since then, it became part of the Petersen Automotive Museum in LA. Autoblog's The List even took a ride in it when the show visited the museum.

The XKSS is one of the pinnacles of automotive design of the '50s, and its association with McQueen makes this example even more extraordinary. Leno is in love with the car from the moment he sees it, and it's hard to argue with him. Between its emphasized curves and raspy exhaust, this is one sexy Jag. Scroll down to get an eyeful and earful from one of McQueen's favorite cars.

Watch this 9-year-old drive Jeep Wrangler off-road [w/poll]

Nine-year-old driving a Jeep

This nine-year-old girl might be better at rock crawling than some people twice her age. But is it worth putting her in danger to do it? According to her father on the Jeep Experience Facebook page, her name is Faith, and she has been offroading with her family since she was two. At nine years old, she's now driving her dad's Jeep over the rocks by herself.

As you can see she's belted in and under her father's direct supervision and guidance. She shows immense confidence for someone her age and follows her dad's instructions on exactly what to do. Although, this could still be a very dangerous situation if something went wrong.

Previously, we saw a similar video with a six-year-old on a motorcycle driving on public roads through the desert. Voters decided by only a six-point margin that the adult should be in trouble for letting the kid ride the bike. Here, we have a slightly older child driving a vehicle off road. Where do you fall in this case? Is it still wrong to hand over control to a child? Let us know in the poll below and scroll down to watch the video.

ADaM: augmenting existing approximate fast matching algorithms with efficient and exact range queries

Background:
Drug discovery, disease detection, and personalized medicine are fast-growing areas of genomic research. With the advancement of next-generation sequencing techniques, researchers can obtain an abundance of data for many different biological assays in a short period of time. When this data is error-free, the result is a high-quality base-pair resolution picture of the genome. However, when the data is lossy the heuristic algorithms currently used when aligning next-generation sequences causes the corresponding accuracy to drop.
Results:
This paper describes a program, ADaM (APF DNA Mapper) which significantly increases final alignment accuracy. ADaM works by first using an existing program to align "easy" sequences, and then using an algorithm with accuracy guarantees (the APF) to align the remaining sequences. The final result is a technique that increases the mapping accuracy from only 60% to over 90% for harder-to-align sequences.

Proteomics, lipidomics, metabolomics: a mass spectrometry tutorial from a computer scientist's point of view

Background:
For decades, mass spectrometry data has been analyzed to investigate a wide array of research interests, including disease diagnostics, biological and chemical theory, genomics, and drug development. Progress towards solving any of these disparate problems depends upon overcoming the common challenge of interpreting the large data sets generated. Despite interim successes, many data interpretation problems in mass spectrometry are still challenging. Further, though these challenges are inherently interdisciplinary in nature, the significant domain-specific knowledge gap between disciplines makes interdisciplinary contributions difficult.
Results:
This paper provides an introduction to the burgeoning field of computational mass spectrometry. We illustrate key concepts, vocabulary, and open problems in MS-omics, as well as provide invaluable resources such as open data sets and key search terms and references.
Conclusions:
This paper will facilitate contributions from mathematicians, computer scientists, and statisticians to MS-omics that will fundamentally improve results over existing approaches and inform novel algorithmic solutions to open problems.

Warlords of Draenor: Major balance druid changes on the way

I have two druids, one Alliance, one Horde -- in fact, the Alliance druid was the first character I ever made. That said, while I initially tried my hand at healing with my first druid, these days, I usually just use the characters for farming purposes. Let's face it, there's nothing better than flight form for nabbing pesky herbs or mining nodes. I will, however, occasionally run a dungeon or a scenario -- and when I do, I'm in cat form. It's the default choice as far as I'm concerned, and I do enough damage to get by, although nobody in their right mind could claim I have more than a bare, passing knowledge of the spec.

But I never could get into playing a balance druid. At first it was the fact that I began playing a druid before balance druids were even something remotely feasible to play. Then I was drawn to other classes, and by the time I got back to the druid, balance looked like a complicated impossibility to learn. Apparently I was not alone in this assessment, as balance druids are headed for some massive changes according to the latest iteration of patch notes from the Warlords of Draenor alpha.

Vanilla alpha models vs. Warlords

Hayven Games over on Youtube posted a pretty interesting video the other day, in light of all of the new character models we're beginning to see. Players may be familiar enough with the models we use in WoW today, but very few players know what the original alpha models from World of Warcraft looked like. In some cases, there were very little changes from alpha WoW to release, and in others, the change was pretty dramatic. In the above video, those incredibly old models from alpha are highlighted -- not just the static models, but how they walk and run. Characters that have already been featured in ArtCraft segments also have their Warlords model improvements on display for a side-by-side comparison.

It's interesting to see how not just the artwork, but even the walk and run cycles for characters evolved from the original days of alpha to WoW's release back in 2004. Human characters look a little leaner with longer legs, gnomes in particular have some pretty terrifying faces, but the most striking difference has to be with the trolls. While the male trolls looked fairly close to release version, the run animation was something else entirely. As for female trolls ... well, let's just say despite the current blank, unblinking stare, today's models are a vast, vast improvement.

Spurs' Cory Joseph Splits Defenders, Throws Down over Serge Ibaka

San Antonio Spurs point guard Cory Joseph has only been averaging 4.4 minutes per game this postseason, but that didn't keep him from coming up with an exciting play on Tuesday night.

During Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Joseph was able to split two defenders, drive to the basket and throw down a powerful slam dunk over Serge Ibaka.

It was only two points and the Spurs were still trailing in the game by a significant margin, but it was one of the more exciting plays from the contest nonetheless.
