2014 Ducati Monster 1200 S

2014 Ducati Monster 1200 S

The Ducati Monster 1200 S has the power-to-weight ratio of a Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse and the contact patch of a playing card. I'm elbows deep into leaning this pulsing, growling, screaming red animal across a one-lane hairpin on the edge of a volcanic island, when a sequence of questions flit through my mind: What if I hit a patch of gravel? What if a car rounds the corner and barrels toward me? What if I overcook the bend and somersault down the mountain, followed by a tumbling 461-pound bike?

Though these thoughts occur to every motorcyclist, they're less toxic than one might think aboard the latest naked bike from Ducati.

Allow me to explain.

The Monster barks in anger when its massive, 145-horsepower L-twin fires up, and its distinct lack of bodywork lends its mechanical entrails a fascinating - if somewhat grizzly - presence. There's the pretty (Brembo monoblocs, TiN-coated Öhlins shocks, an aluminum single-sided swing arm), the ugly (cooling hoses, sloppy wiring, and an ill-fitting radiator shroud), and the optically clever (twin exhaust silencers of subtly staggered proportions, an LED-illuminated license plate mounted on a rear hugger). But despite all this visual and visceral data, the bike's electronics systems have a sneaky way of taming this two-wheeled chimera.

Breakfast Topic: Who will miss reforging?

Let me start by getting this off my chest: I hate reforging. I hate it with a fiery, burning passion usually reserved for politicians and the sorts of people who think numbers are an acceptable substitute for letters in words -- which is to say a lot. This isn't to say that I don't appreciate the ability to customize my gear, but reforging has turned the ability to customize into a metagaming nightmare.

In order to play my best, when I get a piece of gear -- even if it's a clear upgrade -- before I equip it I need to consult Ask Mr. Robot (or a similar service) and visit a reforger in-game. Then I'll spend a few hundred gold to shuffle the stats on all of my my gear so that the new piece fits without dropping important stats like hit and expertise. Even using an addon to do the hard work of figuring out what to reforge to what, this adds a layer of metagaming between me and my desire to play that I just don't enjoy.

So you can imagine my delight when I found out that reforging was going away. I'm sure I'm not the only one who won't miss reforging -- but I'm equally sure that there are plenty of players out there who don't want to do without this customization option. So today I'm asking you: will you miss reforging? And if so, why?

Spring Thunderstorms Monday

Mostly cloudy weather is coming up for tonight with a low near 60 degrees. Spring thunderstorms will move in tomorrow, and the latest outlook from the Storm Prediction Center has some of our northern, inland counties in a Slight Risk area. The main threat looks to be hail, but isolated pockets of wind damage and a brief tornado spinup are possible.

WSOF Prez: 'You're Crazy' If You Think Rousimar Palhares Held Heel Hook Too Long

Newly crowned World Series of Fighting welterweight champion Rousimar Palhares isn't receiving much praise in light of his submission victory over Steve Carl at WSOF 9 Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Once again, many pundits believe that "Toquinho" held on to a dangerous leglock for a little too long after his opponent tapped out.

However, World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo, matchmaker Ali Abdel-Aziz and Carl all believe that Palhares showed the utmost sportsmanship in this particular situation, per Shaun Al-Shatti of MMA Fighting

"The submission happened right in front of Ali and I," said Sefo. "I thought as soon as the referee told him to let go, he let go. So if you think that he held it too long, then you're crazy," Sefo said at the post-fight press conference.

Abdel-Aziz echoed that same sentiment.

"I think everybody needs to leave this kid alone," said Abdel-Aziz. "He went through a lot already, and he's a champ now. I think everybody should be congratulating him and praising him as a champ."

Carl, who congratulated Palhares with a hug after the fight, also feels there was nothing controversial about the end of the title tilt.

"It all happened really fast, and the damage was done at that point. I got no ill will," Carl explained, complimenting his Brazilian counterpart on the "extremely slick" transition to the inverted heel hook.

For those who missed Saturday evening's championship bout, a GIF of the finish can be viewed here, courtesy of Zombie Prophet.

The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, who improved to 16-6 overall with the win over Carl, was banned from the UFC after cranking a heel hook on Mike Pierce at UFC Fight Night 29 in October.

This wasn't the first time Palhares was sanctioned for being overzealous with a submission hold, as the New Jersey Athletic Commission suspended the 34-year-old for 90 days back in March 2010 after he excessively cranked a heel hook on  Tomasz Drwal at UFC 111, per MMA Junkie

Palhares already has his first title defense booked, set to square off with former UFC title challenger Jon Fitch at WSOF 11 in July, also per MMA Junkie

In an interview with MMA Oddsbreaker last year, Fitch said he would turn down a bout with Palhares, the first time he'd ever decline a matchup in his nearly 12-year professional fight career.

Apparently, he has since softened his stance now that championship gold is on the line.

Kentucky Fan Fails at Messing with Michigan's Nik Stauskas' Wikipedia Page

If you're going to talk smack on the Internet, make sure that it's creative and logical.

No. 8 Kentucky and No. 2 Michigan are battling for a spot in the Final Four on Sunday, so it made sense for the fanbases to trade shots.

One Wildcats fan decided to go in and change the Wikipedia page of Wolverines star Nik Stauskas. However, the fan failed miserably. There were too many grammatical mistakes—including "kenturkey"— in the entry for it to count as smack talk.

VW celebrates 40 years of playing Golf

Volkswagen Golfs

On March 29, 1974, the very first Volkswagen Golf rolled down the assembly line. That little car has gone on to spawn seven generations, while the Golf name has become one of the models in the hotly contested compact segment, selling over 30 million units during its 40 years on sale.

While we look forward to the seventh-generation Golf, which will spawn three distinct hot hatchbacks - the GTI, GTD and GTE - as well as fuel-sipping diesel-powered variants, Volkswagen has put together a look back at the first six generations of the venerable Golf. It briefly pays homage to each generation of the car, from its roots as a simple people mover onto its larger, better trimmed, contemporary version.

Take a look below for the detailed press release on the Golf's evolution, and then head into the gallery to see a visual representation of the Golf's development over the past 40 years.

Bertone confirms bankruptcy, needs savior by end of April

Bertone Nuccio

The previously reported (potential) demise of Italian coachbuilder Bertone has been confirmed, and the company has entered bankruptcy proceedings. The court has until the end of April to decide whether to shutter the business, which was founded in 1912, or find a buyer.

The coachbuilder behind the angular shape of the Lancia Stratos has been struggling for a while. The company was teetering on the brink of bankruptcy in December and was even under the control of a court-appointed administrator. The company employs about 200 people, but most of them have been laid off for the last month and a half.

"The court is evaluating proposals from foreign companies interested in buying Bertone," a spokesperson said to UK newspaper The Telegraph, confirming that one of them is from Turkey. This fits with a previous report of a Turkish company interested in buying Bertone for $2.7 million. However, several, unnamed Italian companies had also reportedly expressed interest.

The carrozzeria penned some beautiful shapes in its day, including the Lamborghini Miura and Countach, Alfa Romeo Montreal and Nuccio concept (pictured above). Hopefully, a buyer will bring the name back like what we've seen from Touring.

General Motors expands ignition-switch recall again by 971,000 cars

GM ingnition switch recall

Days before Congress holds hearings on why it took General Motors so long to let millions of car owners know about a potentially deadly defect, the car company admitted more cars are affected and is recalling nearly one million more cars globally.

General Motors announced late Friday it would recall another 824,000 vehicles in the U.S. and 147,000 worldwide because they may contain faulty ignition switches that could inadvertently turn off the engine and safety systems while the cars are in motion. This is the third wave of the recall, originally announced last month, and Friday's news brings the total tally to nearly 2.6 million cars. GM has acknowledged has caused at least 12 deaths and 31 car accidents.

GM said it's expanding the recall because the company sold approximately 95,000 of the faulty ignition switches to aftermarket wholesalers and dealers, and doesn't think it's practical to try and track them all down.

"We are taking no chances with safety," General Motors CEO Mary Barra said in a written statement. "Trying to locate several thousand switches in a population of 2.2 million vehicles and distributed to thousands of retailers isn't practical. Out of an abundance of caution, we are recalling the rest of the model years."

I'm so bored with the Horde

This isn't a rant about how the Horde is bad, or how you should feel bad for playing them, or anything. If you like playing Horde, I'm not arguing that you're wrong to do so. I know that's a subjective thing, and some folks just plain like specific Horde races better. This is more about how, after Mists of Pandaria, I'm completely exhausted as a player with Horde stories and the Horde/Alliance conflict. I'm not inherently opposed to Horde/Alliance conflict. In fact, I think it made Mists of Pandaria a very strong expansion, with a strong and interesting story. I especially liked patch 5.1, and played both the Horde and Alliance storylines.

And frankly, that was the last time any of my Horde characters got any serious play.

Since 5.1 I've felt myself shifting away from the Horde. Part of that was going back to raiding on my draenei warrior, of course. But a bigger part of it was simple ennui, and a general culture shift in the Horde that left me feeling totally unable to connect to it. When I rolled my first Horde characters (an orc shaman and tauren warrior back in vanilla days) there was a real, concrete tone shift when I played them vs, when I played my Alliance characters. A sense of desperate odds, of outcasts banding together to stand against a hostile world, facing off against a monolithic power.

That's gone. It's probably gone forever. Even after the events of Mists of Pandaria, it's impossible to view the faction that banded together from the events of Warcraft III as the same entity anymore - over the course of two expansions, the Horde went from underdogs to aggressors. And while I've heard many players say things like "the orcs are not the whole Horde" to attempt to distance ourselves, fact is, my tauren did the quests in Twilight Highlands. My blood elf led the charge onto Pandaria's shores, and he stole the Divine Bell so that Garrosh could make use of it. Up until patch 5.3, if you played Horde, there was no real way to not aid Garrosh's cause - you were complicit in everything that helped make the Warchief's plan work. The orcs may not be the whole Horde, but what excuse does that give your pandaren or forsaken, when they're the ones who delivered the keys to the kingdom into Garrosh's hands?

The Queue: It's been so long!

Welcome back to The Queue, the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Anne Stickney (@Shadesogrey) really likes betas. Hint hint, Blizzard?

Look at those little talking birdies. Just ... look at them. Oh hey, Warcraft questions!

JediExcel asked:

So re reading Rise of the Horde again, and was struck by a thought. In the real world, Nerzhul was tricked and Guldan was a willing participant in the turning the orcs against the draenei. Now Garrosh shows the alternate time line orcs of their corruption, and thwarts the burning legion by preventing them from drinking the blood of Mannoroth. But the war is still going on in this alternate time line. Unless I missed something, this seems to show the orcs are still a bunch of d- er, determined jerks. Thoughts?

That's kind of a tricky situation. We don't know exactly when Garrosh went back in time to -- just that it was at some point before the orcs were offered the Blood of Mannoroth. Keep in mind that the orcs and draenei had been fighting each other relentlessly up until that point -- Mannoroth's blood was given to the orcs just before they attacked Shattrath City. But every other major city had been utterly destroyed by then. So it's entirely likely Garrosh may have arrived in the middle of this war between draenei and orc, and didn't bother trying to stop that. Why would he, when the draenei make excellent opponents to train the Iron Horde's killing skills on before they head to Azeroth?

Star Wars: Assault Team puts Star Wars: Force Collection to shame

I love Star Wars and I love collectable card games, so it should say quite a bit that I couldn't review Star Wars: Force Collection because the bare-bones production values turned me off that much. As a collectable card game, it's apparently not bad,...

India and MS Dhoni's Only Worry at the 2014 World T20 Is Complacency

India have been in cruise control in the World Twenty20 so far, taking comfortable victories against Pakistan, West Indies and Bangladesh and securing a berth in the semifinals.

Barely tested so far, the highest target for victory required has been the 139 the tournament hosts set them earlier today, something the Indians went past for the loss of just two wickets.

In effect, their three victories have all had striking similarities, from Mahendra Singh Dhoni winning the toss and choosing to field and going on from there.

Early on, the Indians have strangled their opponents with the ball, preventing them from gathering any momentum at all during the Powerplay overs.

Interestingly, in all three of their matches, India’s bowlers have prevented the opposition from going above 35 in the opening six overs, with only Pakistan managing to score over 30.

Having stymied their opponents’ openers in the opening exchanges, the spin bowlers then come into their own, with Ravichandran Ashwin, Amit Mishra and Ravindra Jadeja all playing a role in taking wickets and drying up the runs.

This means that the opposition have been unable to increase their run rate to seven runs per over or beyond, meaning that India’s batsmen are left to chase an infinitely reachable total.

Then, despite the inconsistent performances of opener Shikhar Dhawan, top-order players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli then play a key role in leading them home comfortably.

So in-form have the pair looked that both have passed 50 each in the last two matches, with their strong and seemingly unbreakable partnerships ensuring India take an easy win.

It is a strategy that has served them very well so far in the tournament, albeit against a moderate Bangladesh and the inconsistent West Indies and Pakistan.

They will now be looking forward to their final Super 10 game against Australia on Sunday, then a semifinal clash next week in Mirpur, with hopes of topping their group.

However, despite all this comfort, questions may well remain about India’s team, given that they do not seem to have been tested so far.

The first centres on whether they are truly prepared to set a target if they are asked to bat first by the opposition.

Having been so reliant on their top order to chase down small totals, some batsmen may well be a little out of match practice and lacking time in the middle. So to be asked to step up and set a target—especially in the semifinals—may be a tall order.

There are also questions surrounding the bowlers and how they will cope if a team is able to find form in the opening Powerplay and start hitting boundaries regularly. Will they be able to regain their control, or will such an event be so surprising that they end up conceding over 200 in 20 overs?

Finally, if required to chase a large total, India may find themselves unprepared to do so, given the paucity of competition so far.

In this year’s World T20, they have not been used to chasing large totals at all, so to do so amid the pressure of a semifinal will again be a tough ask. As such, Dhoni and his team will need to keep working hard. If they are complacent enough to believe that the trophy is theirs to lose, it will come back to bite them in a big way.

India have looked incredibly strong, and we will soon find out just how strong they are when they come up against other sides who have been impressive in this tournament.

They may well be one of the favourites to take an overall victory at the World T20, but they will be conscious that one difficult game may prove to be their undoing, even at this stage.

It is up to Dhoni and his players to stay motivated, as surely their remaining games will not be as relatively straightforward as those that have gone before.

Diablo III: Reaper of Souls launch party

Central LA venue Vibiana, a converted chapel, played host to the Diablo III: Reaper of Souls launch event on Monday night, and I was lucky enough to be invited along. The venue was incredibly well-done, eerie red lighting shifting in color through the evening, and key quotes from the game's opening monologue projected onto the vaulted ceiling, along with the circular motifs you see above.

The evening began with activities, guests were issued with Bounty cards, where they could collect Blood Shards -- a new Reaper of Souls currency -- from visiting the art gallery, having their photo taken, getting a caricature or a temporary tattoo. All the activities were completely free, and handing in Blood Shards rewarded a poster, t-shirt or backpack.

Along with the activities were cos-players, specially re-named versions of classic drinks, and at 9pm a toast with Game Director Josh Mosqueira, which then turned into a live stream as Day 9 took to the stage. Those of us who were attending as Influencers were then offered a free Collector's Edition, which could be signed by the developers from the team. Hit the break for more images.

NHTSA has just 51 investigators tracking America's 250M cars

NHTSA Logo

How many people do you think the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has investigating automotive defects? 5,000? 2,500? 1,000? You'd be well off on all counts. It has 51. 51 investigators covering America's pool of 250 million vehicles.

That shocking stat comes courtesy of Bloomberg, which notes that the Office of Defects Investigation at NHTSA has actually decreased in size. In 2002, there were 64 employees. The office's budget, meanwhile, has remained at just $10 million since 2005, despite NHTSA as a whole getting $851 million to play around with in 2015.

"The idea of $10 million for an office that's in charge of the safety of all these vehicles, undertaking investigations and doing the recalls, it's just ridiculous," Jackie Gillan, president of Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, told Bloomberg.

One possible solution to the issue has been proposed in the US Senate this week. According to the report, regulators would be forced to publish all information the agency collects into a searchable format, allowing various groups, from safety advocates to lawyers to other car companies to pick up the slack. That proposal would seem to come with its own set of potential problems, but considering that NHTSA's 51 Office of Defects Investigation employees are tasked with handling over 40,000 complaints from consumers, clearly something needs to be done.

"They're getting information, and they're not following up," Sally Greenberg, president of another advocacy group, the National Consumers League, told Bloomberg via phone. "They're not capturing the information in a way that's useful. They're not responding quickly to a litany of similar complaints."

Even as cars become safer and more reliable each year, the fact that there are just 51 people monitoring them for safety defects seems astonishing. Here's hoping that between the headline-grabbing recalls at Toyota and General Motors, Washington realizes that more investigators and more resources are required.

The Queue: Missing the little things, faster expansions, models, and circular goats

Welcome back to The Queue, the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Adam Holisky (@adamholisky) will be your host today.

So how many of you were up late and got your Diablo 3 wizard (best class, if you disagree you're plain wrong) to 70?

Chris asked:

Q for the Queue: Does anyone else miss the "Little things"? Now I'm talking about I just today was looking forward to April Fools day, but then I realized Blizzard didn't do anything last year for it. I got quite sad. Did you also know we have had (as of now) two summer olympics and three winter olympics, yet only one time was The Spirit of Competition and the Tabard of Competition available? I'm aware that all of these things are content, and they are constantly working on things to bring out expansions, but these "little things" are the things that make the difference, in my opinion anyway. I'm not sure there is a question anymore, but your thoughts?

How the brain infers structure, rules when learning could impact the study of learning disabilities

In life, many tasks have a context that dictates the right actions, so when people learn to do something new, they'll often infer cues of context and rules. In a new study, Brown University brain scientists took advantage of that tendency to track the emergence of such rule structures in the frontal cortex - even when such structure was not necessary or even helpful to learn - and to predict from EEG readings how people would apply them to learn new tasks speedily.Context and rule structures are everywhere.

Breakfast Topic: What's the one thing you won't do in WoW?

We often times talk about what we will do in WoW, but there's another side to the join: what we won't do.

For instance, I won't do serious PvP. I tried it once for a bit and I just didn't like it. People's attitudes were too crass, there wasn't a sense of having fun, and things just felt wrong. These feelings weren't on my own team, mind you, they were from other people. Of course this might have just soured the overall experience for me, and I should give serious PvP another try -- but in general it's just something that I don't want to do, and because WoW is a game, I won't do.

I know others that will not level alts, at all. They think because they've played through the content once they don't need to play through it again. That makes sense to me from their perspective, but with every alt I level I learn new things, so it's never a situation where leveling an alt is useless for me.

To each their own -- but where do you stand? What's the thing in WoW that you won't do?

Phenotypic characterisation of Saccharomyces spp. yeast for tolerance to stresses encountered during fermentation of lignocellulosic residues to produce bioethanol

Background:
During industrial fermentation of lignocellulose residues to produce bioethanol, microorganisms are exposed to a number of factors that influence productivity. These include inhibitory compounds produced by the pre-treatment processes required to release constituent carbohydrates from biomass feed-stocks and during fermentation, exposure of the organisms to stressful conditions. In addition, for lignocellulosic bioethanol production, conversion of both pentose and hexose sugars is a pre-requisite for fermentative organisms for efficient and complete conversion. All these factors are important to maximise industrial efficiency, productivity and profit margins in order to make second-generation bioethanol an economically viable alternative to fossil fuels for future transport needs.
Results:
The aim of the current study was to assess Saccharomyces yeasts for their capacity to tolerate osmotic, temperature and ethanol stresses and inhibitors that might typically be released during steam explosion of wheat straw. Phenotypic microarray analysis was used to measure tolerance as a function of growth and metabolic activity. Saccharomyces strains analysed in this study displayed natural variation to each stress condition common in bioethanol fermentations. In addition, many strains displayed tolerance to more than one stress, such as inhibitor tolerance combined with fermentation stresses.
Conclusions:
Our results suggest that this study could identify a potential candidate strain or strains for efficient second generation bioethanol production. Knowledge of the Saccharomyces spp. strains grown in these conditions will aid the development of breeding programmes in order to generate more efficient strains for industrial fermentations.
