Bertone confirms bankruptcy, needs savior by end of April

The previously reported (potential) demise of Italian coachbuilder Bertone has been confirmed, and the company has entered bankruptcy proceedings. The court has until the end of April to decide whether to shutter the business, which was founded in 1912, or find a buyer.

The coachbuilder behind the angular shape of the Lancia Stratos has been struggling for a while. The company was teetering on the brink of bankruptcy in December and was even under the control of a court-appointed administrator. The company employs about 200 people, but most of them have been laid off for the last month and a half.

"The court is evaluating proposals from foreign companies interested in buying Bertone," a spokesperson said to UK newspaper The Telegraph, confirming that one of them is from Turkey. This fits with a previous report of a Turkish company interested in buying Bertone for $2.7 million. However, several, unnamed Italian companies had also reportedly expressed interest.

The carrozzeria penned some beautiful shapes in its day, including the Lamborghini Miura and Countach, Alfa Romeo Montreal and Nuccio concept (pictured above). Hopefully, a buyer will bring the name back like what we've seen from Touring.
