MLB Reportedly Unlikely to Implement Pace-of-Play Fines

Major League Baseball is reportedly working with the MLB Players Association to potentially eliminate the fines (in the range of $100 to $500) regarding the new pace-of-play rules that were scheduled to begin May 1.

Jayson Stark of ESPN.com reported Thursday the final details are still being hammered out, but the league is expected to at least ease the punishments. Tony Clark, the executive director of the players' union, told the outlet the progress that's been made has facilitated the likely change: "The idea here was to effect some positive changes in habits, and to see if, by doing so, we could also shorten the length of games and perhaps improve the pace. And the result is that a lot of [players] have done exactly that. ... So to penalize guys just to penalize them doesn't make a lot of sense."

The report notes the pace of games early in 2015 is down more than eight minutes from 2014. The revised plan would call for the league to continue contacting players who are consistently breaking the new standards, with possible fines for "flagrant violations."

These new standards set by MLB include staying in the batter's box during at-bats as well as using timers between innings in an effort to increase the speed of play. So far, the results would suggest things are trending in the right direction.

Len Kasper, play-by-play announcer for the Chicago Cubs, weighed in on the rules and the impact on the game:

Back in February, Nick Schwartz of USA Today passed along comments from Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz, who is famous for his between-pitch rituals. It's safe to say he wasn't a fan of the changes:

Well, I might run out of money. I'm serious. I'm not going to change my game. I don't care what they say. My game, it's not like I go around and do all kinds of stupid [expletive]. But I have to take my time and think about what that [pitcher] is going to do next. I'm pretty sure every single hitter at this level is on the same page…. They put their rules together, but they don't talk to us, as hitters, how do you feel about this? You know what I'm saying? Why don't you come and ask questions first. And then we can get in an agreement. But then you got to do this just because you say so. Oh buddy, it doesn't work that way. Trust me.

Now it seems Ortiz won't have to worry about losing some cash every at-bat. Whether the league will reconsider its stance if the pace of play begins to slow back down is unknown, but the issue has definitely been a hot topic in recent years.

Apparently, MLB is happy enough with the progress to move forward without the threat of fines looming over players' heads—at least for now.

Pacquiao vs. Mayweather: Key Factors That Will Determine Megafight's Outcome

We're just days away from the megafight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, who will finally come face-to-face at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas this Saturday, and anticipation surrounding the bout is quickly rising.

Fans have been waiting for this fight for years, often assuming the two most dominant boxers of our generation would never face each other, and it's almost surreal to think that in just a few days, it will finally happen.

As shared by ESPN's Arash Markazi, the hype surrounding this bout is unlike anything we've seen before, giving you some idea of the magnitude of the event:

Mayweather is still undefeated at the age of 38; Pacquiao has lost twice in recent years, against Timothy Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez, but has since returned to his usual, dominant self. Their styles and personalities are polar opposites, and their fans have been debating the outcome of this fight for years.

So, which factors will determine who walks out of the MGM Grand with his legacy intact on Saturday? Let's find out.

Key Factors

Stamina over Power

Six years ago, this fight would have been billed as the classic battle between the knockout artist and the defensive wizard. Mayweather was virtually impossible to hit, while Pacquiao was at his very peak, knocking out opponents for fun.

Fans will never forget where they were when the Filipino slugger did this to Ricky Hatton in 2009:

As a southpaw with deadly hand speed and a great left hook, Pac-Man was a matchup nightmare. He would throw an incredible amount of punches every round, and every so often, he'd launch that left hook in search of a stoppage.

But, via Markazi, things have changed since then:

Pacquiao's power isn't gone, but since his loss against Marquez, he's become a more careful fighter. He no longer opens up recklessly, knowing his biggest strength is his hand speed, not his power.

He'd be wise to remember that on Saturday. Pacquiao has been waiting for this fight for years, and after all this time, there's probably nothing he'd rather do than hand Mayweather his first loss by knockout.

But Money remains one of the most elusive boxers in the world, and while it's possible to land big shots against the pound-for-pound king, he usually limits the damage to single power punches. Even Pac-Man seems to know he should aim for the cards, not a stoppage, via MailOnline Sport:

If Pacquiao wants to beat Mayweather, he has to forget about that big knockout shot and work on out-boxing him. Landing combinations and winning on the cards will be key, and with his hand speed, it's not out of the question.

Floyd's Legs

Once upon a time, Mayweather was arguably―and probably―the greatest defensive fighter the sport had ever seen. During his prime, he was virtually untouchable, using his jab and reach to deadly effect while ducking in and out of the reach of his opponents.

He was a feared counterpuncher, and his shoulder-roll defence was a sight to behold for boxing aficionados.

Years later, Mayweather is still an excellent defensive boxer. But as explained by Compubox's Bob Canobbio, he's no longer the perfect defensive fighter he was years ago:

If the numbers prove anything, it's that Mayweather can be hit. He's become a more static target, particularly closer to the ropes, and his lateral movement is no longer elite. His head movement is still fantastic, and he can still duck and counterpunch like the best of them. But Floyd can be hit.

He's also struggled with quick southpaws in the past, most notably against Zab Judah, who has been sparring with Mayweather leading up to this fight, per The Independent's James Orr:

Pacquiao has the hand speed to rival Judah, and a tendency to throw lengthy combinations. He attacks from unorthodox angles and keeps moving forward at all times. And like Mayweather, he often does most of his damage in the latter rounds.

We've gotten so used to Mayweather's brilliant defensive techniques, it's difficult to imagine Pacquiao actually landing plenty of power shots. But if Floyd struggles to move, like he has done in recent years, those punches will connect.

It would be a massive surprise to see Mayweather get hit routinely, but via The Guardian, Sugar Ray Leonard is expecting the unexpected:

Mayweather should be considered the favourite entering the fight by virtue of his undefeated record and his brilliant defensive techniques. But unless he can move like the Mayweather of old, don't be shocked if Pac-Man lands more punches of consequence than you were expecting.

NHL Playoffs 2015: Schedule, TV Info and Prediction for Wednesday's Slate

Game 7.

No two words in sports provide more goosebumps, sweaty palms and memorable moments, which makes Wednesday’s showdown between the Detroit Red Wings and Tampa Bay Lightning appointment viewing for even the most casual NHL fan.

Here is a look at Wednesday’s playoff schedule and broadcast information, followed by a prediction for the decisive contest.

Wednesday NHL Playoff Schedule

Matchup: Detroit Red Wings at Tampa Bay Lightning, Game 7

Time: 7:30 p.m. ET

TV: NBC Sports Network

Live Stream: NBC Sports Live Extra

Preview and Prediction

Tampa Bay center Steven Stamkos explained exactly what Game 7 means, via Mark Didtler of The Associated Press, via ESPN.com:

This is Game 7. We worked extremely hard to get ourselves in this position. No one remembers what happened in Game 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. We have to be a lot better than we have been. They've come in here and beat us twice. We have that mentality we were the best team at home in the league for a reason, and we have to show that.

He is right: Nobody will remember what happened in the first six contests. Advancement is the only thing that matters in the playoffs, and one team’s Stanley Cup dreams will be shattered Wednesday.

The key for Tampa Bay is setting the tone in the offensive zone in the early going. The Lightning were first in the league with 3.2 goals per game and need to rely on their strength in the most important game of their season.

Look for Tyler Johnson to lead the way again after he scored two more goals in a 5-2 victory in Game 6.

Johnson actually has six of Tampa Bay’s 15 goals in this series, which has made up for the lack of scoring from Stamkos. The Lightning used a balanced attack around Johnson in Game 6, with Jason Garrison, Alex Killorn and Cedric Paquette also finding the back of the net.

It was a refreshing performance for Tampa Bay fans, who have watched their team struggle against goalie Petr Mrazek and the Detroit defense for much of the series.

That defense will be significantly weaker for Wednesday’s game without Niklas Kronwall.

Kronwall was suspended after charging Tampa Bay forward Nikita Kucherov in Game 6. Although Kronwall did not receive a penalty for the blow, the NHL decided it was enough to warrant a suspension for the decisive game.

Craig Custance of ESPN The Magazine pointed out just how damaging the suspension is for the Detroit defense:

Another concern for the Red Wings is the fact that Stamkos has yet to score in this series even though he was second in the league with 43 goals in the regular season. He is overdue to find the back of the net, which makes him dangerous alongside the red-hot Johnson.

Stamkos was only looking ahead to Game 7, according to Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times:

If the Lightning come out on offense in Game 7 the same way they played in Game 6, Detroit must answer. The Red Wings were second in the league in power-play percentage and will look to create one-man advantages, but Tampa Bay was also seventh in the league in penalty-kill percentage.

If the Lightning negate Detroit’s power play, it will put even more pressure on the short-handed Red Wings defense.

Tampa Bay also holds the home-ice advantage, but that hasn’t exactly been a blessing thus far in this series. The Red Wings won two of the first three in Tampa Bay, while the Lightning took two of the three in Detroit.

Still, both teams would likely take the home-ice advantage if given the choice.

Between the critical suspension and the fact that Tampa Bay’s offense appeared to finally wake up in Game 6, the Red Wings have too much to overcome on the road. The home team will come through when it matters most Wednesday.

Prediction: Lightning 4, Red Wings 2; Lightning win series 4-3

Arsenal Transfer News: Jose Mourinho Says Gunners 4 Stars from Invincible Return

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has advised Arsenal that they need to add four new signings to their squad if they are to dominate the Premier League once more.

The Blues and the Gunners drew 0-0 on Sunday to move Mourinho's side one step closer to a fourth Premier League title—they need just six more points from their remaining five games to confirm their triumph.

Arsenal have not won the title since 2003-04—the season of the "Invincibles" in which Arsene Wenger's men did not lose a match—but Mourinho believes they are not far from challenging once again, per Darren Lewis in the Mirror:

It's even more difficult to dominate than before. How can you speak about domination when everyone knows what will happen next summer? Arsenal have a phenomenal squad. The other night, Thierry Henry said they need four top-class players. Give Arsenal four top-class players and I think they will again be the Invincibles.

After a lengthy spell of frugality, Arsenal and Wenger seem to have loosened the purse strings somewhat in recent summers, and they have benefited as a result.

Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez were marquee signings in 2013 and 2014 respectively, and the Gunners may well splash out again once the current season is over.

DybalaGomez and Schneiderlin all Targeted

Palermo striker Paolo Dybala has been targeted by the Gunners for some time, and they reportedly put in a bid for the 21-year-old in March, per Simon Jones on MailOnline

Per WhoScored.com, the youngster has netted 13 times and assisted 10 in the league this season and would bring added firepower to the Gunners front line.

However, the Argentinian Dybala is being pursued by many other top clubs, including Juventus and Barcelona. He has recently talked of his delight at reported interest from Inter Milan boss Roberto Mancini, per La Repubblica (h/t GianlucaDiMarzio.com):

Mancini's interest in me makes me happy, it's something that fills me with pride, but when I go out on the pitch I don't think about who's in the stands. When I go out on the pitch I only think about giving the best for myself and my team. I don't think about that someone is sitting in the stands observing me. [...]

There is no agreement in place with Juventus. The only agreement I have is with Palermo. This is the only agreement which I hold on to and which I aim to respect until the end.

As Jones reported, Palermo president Mauro Zamparini wants £30 million for Dybala, a big price for someone so young.

But he has enormous potential and he could improve hugely under Wenger's tutelage, making Dybala a genuinely attractive transfer target for the Gunners.

Arsenal look to be in the driving seat to sign Charlton's young defensive star Joe Gomez. According to Adrian Kajumba in the Mirror, the 17-year-old is being pursued by both Manchester clubs also, but the Gunners lead the way.

Gomez has been impressive in the Championship this season, earning a nomination for Apprentice of the Year, per Charlton:

A centre-back who can also play on the right, Gomez is valued at £8 million, per Kajumba, and looks to be another youngster who would add necessary depth to the Gunners squad.

In terms of marquee signings, Arsenal have been dealt a blow in their long-term pursuit of Southampton's Morgan Schneiderlin, with Saints' head of football development Les Reed insisting he is not for sale, per Sky Sports' Amy Lewis:

It wouldn't be our intention to sell any of our players this summer. We're in the process of renegotiating contracts with some but our main purpose at the moment is keeping this squad together and adding to it.

Arsenal have long needed a world-class defensive midfielder in their ranks and the French international looked to be the obvious choice given his excellence at Southampton. Now it seems, the Gunners will need to look elsewhere.

Arsenal have finished the Premier League season very well, and although they will not win the title in 2015, next term could well be their year, per B/R UK's James McNicholas:

The addition of a few more quality players to the squad this summer and, as Mourinho suggests, Arsenal will be a definite threat to Chelsea in 2015-16.

Effects of 1-year yoga on cardiovascular risk factors in middle-aged and older adults with metabolic syndrome: a randomized trial

Background:
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a clustering of cardiovascular risk factors, which is associated with diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. Lifestyle interventions applied to people with MetS has considerable beneficial effects on disease preventive outcomes. This study aimed to examine the effects of 1-year of yoga exercise on the cardiovascular risk factors including central obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia in middle-aged and older Hong Kong Chinese adults with MetS.
Methods:
Adults diagnosed with MetS using National Cholesterol Education Program criteria (n = 182; mean SD age = 56 9.1) were randomly assigned to a 1-year yoga intervention group or control group. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure, waist circumference, fasting plasma glucose, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were examined at baseline, midway, and on completion of the study. Physical activity level and caloric intake were assessed and included in the covariate analyses.
Results:
A reduction of the number of diagnostic components for MetS was found to be associated with the yoga intervention. Waist circumference was significantly improved after the 1-year yoga intervention. A trend towards a decrease in systolic blood pressure was observed following yoga intervention.
Conclusion:
These results suggest that yoga exercise improves the cardiovascular risk factors including central obesity and blood pressure in middle-aged and older adults with MetS. These findings support the complementary beneficial role of yoga in managing MetS.

Appropriate sevoflurane concentration to stabilize autonomic activity during intubation with rocuronium in infants: a randomized controlled trial

Background:
In infants, sevoflurane is commonly used for induction of anesthesia, following which a muscle relaxant is administered to facilitate tracheal intubation. When rocuronium is used as the muscle relaxant, intubation may be performed before reaching an adequate depth of anesthesia because of its rapid onset. The purpose of this study was to investigate the optimal sevoflurane concentration that would minimize the impact of intubation on hemodynamics and autonomic nervous activity system (ANS) in infants.
Methods:
Sixty-one infants aged 1?6 months, undergoing cleft lip repair, were enrolled. Patients were randomly assigned to three end-tidal sevoflurane concentration (E?Sevo) groups, 3%, 4% and 5%. Anesthesia was induced with 5% sevoflurane with 100% oxygen, and rocuronium (0.6mg/kg) was administered. The concentration of sevoflurane was adjusted to the predetermined concentration in each group. Mechanical pressure control ventilation via a face mask was commenced. Five minutes after E?Sevo became stable at the predetermined concentration, tracheal intubation was performed. Immediately after tracheal intubation, ventilation was restarted at the same ventilator settings and continued for 150seconds. Heart rate (HR) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) were measured 5 times in the 150seconds after intubation. Normalized units (nu) of high frequency (HF: 0.04-0.15Hz) and the ratio of low frequency (LF: 0.15-0.4Hz) to HF components (LF/HF) of HR variability were calculated by MemCalc/Tonam2CTM. Normalized units of HF (HFnu) and LF/HF reflect cardiac parasympathetic and sympathetic activity, respectively.
Results:
After intubation, HR increased slightly in all groups and MAP increased by 9.2% in the E?Sevo-3% group. LF/HF increased (p?Source: http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2253/15/64

Injection practice in Kaski district, Western Nepal: a community perspective

Background:
Previous studies have shown that unsafe injection practice is a major public health problem in Nepal but did not quantify the problem. The present community-based study was planned to: 1) quantify injection usage, 2) identify injection providers, 3) explore differences, if any, in injection usage and injection providers, and 4) study and compare people?s knowledge and perception about injections between the urban and rural areas of Kaski district.
Methods:
A descriptive, cross-sectional mixed-methods study was conducted from July to November 2012, using a questionnaire based survey and focus group discussions (FGDs). A semi-structured questionnaire advocated by the World Health Organization was modified and administered to household heads and injection receivers in selected households and the FGDs were conducted using a topic guide. The district was divided into urban and rural areas and 300 households from each area were selected. Twenty FGDs were held.
Results:
In 218 households (36.33%) [99 in urban and 119 in rural] one or more members received at least one injection. During the three month recall period, 258 subjects (10.44%) reported receiving injection(s) with a median of two injections. The average number of injections per person per year was calculated to be 2.37. Health care workers (34.8%), staff of medical dispensaries (37.7%), physicians (25.2%), and traditional healers (2.3%) were consulted by the respondents for their basic health care needs and for injections. Compared to urban respondents, more rural respondents preferred injections for fever (p?Source: http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2458/15/435

Realistic Trade Possibilities for the St. Louis Rams

The big trades and backroom deals are part of what makes the NFL draft so much fun. The St. Louis Rams are one team that will almost certainly be exploring trade possibilities.

For one, general manager Les Snead is a natural dealer. He was the Atlanta Falcons' director of player personnel when Atlanta made the big trade to acquire Julio Jones. He also masterminded the RGIII trade—a deal that sent St. Louis' No. 2 overall pick in 2012 to Washington in exchange for three first-round selections and one second-round pick.

Snead has also been behind a number of smaller deals during his time in St. Louis. Trading up from No. 16 to No. 8 overall to grab receiver Tavon Austin is one example.

He can't help himself. Sometimes that's a good thing, other times not so much. Either way, you better surrender to the fact that the Rams will be making deals on draft day.

This article will highlight several potential trades that could gain momentum when the draft kicks off.

PROspective MEmory Training to improve HEart failUre Self-care (PROMETHEUS): study protocol for a randomised controlled trial

Background:
Cognitive impairment is seen in up to three quarters of heart failure (HF) patients and has a significant negative impact on patients? health outcomes. Prospective memory, which is defined as memory to carry out future intentions, is important for functional independence in older adults and involves application of multiple cognitive processes that are often impaired in HF patients. The objective of this study is to examine the effects of prospective memory training on patients? engagement in HF self-care and health outcomes, carer strain and quality of life.Methods/designThe proposed study is a randomised, controlled trial in which 200 patients diagnosed with HF, and their carers will be recruited from 3 major hospitals across Melbourne. Eligible patients with HF will be randomised to receive either: 1) The Virtual Week Training Program - a computerised prospective memory (PM) training program (intervention) or 2) non-adaptive computer-based word puzzles (active control). HF patients? baseline cognitive function will be compared to a healthy control group (n?=?60) living independently in the community. Patients will undergo a comprehensive assessment of PM, neuropsychological functioning, self-care, physical, and emotional functioning. Assessments will take place at baseline, 4weeks and 12months following intervention. Carers will complete measures assessing quality of life, strain, perceived control in the management of the patients? HF symptoms, and ratings of the patients? level of engagement in HF self-care behaviours.DiscussionIf the Virtual Week Training Program is effective in improving: 1) prospective memory; 2) self-care behaviours, and 3) wellbeing in HF patients, this study will enhance our understanding of impaired cognitive processes in HF and potentially is a mechanism to reduce healthcare costs.Trial registrationAustralian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry #366376; 27 May 2014. https://www.anzctr.org.au/Trial/Registration/TrialReview.aspx?id=366376&isClinicalTrial=False.

Liverpool Transfer News: Memphis Depay and Christian Benteke Rumours Grow

Manager Brendan Rodgers' need for new attacking options intensified after his Liverpool side's 0-0 draw Saturday with West Bromwich Albion. PSV Eindhoven starlet Memphis Depay and Aston Villa powerhouse Christian Benteke have been named as the Reds' top targets in what would be an exciting haul for the Merseyside club.

Rodgers largely batted away questions from the media about Depay after the Baggies stalemate. As reported by John Percy of The Telegraph, the Northern Irishman didn't want to be drawn on speculation the Dutchman met Liverpool officials.

"I can't confirm either way," said Rodgers. "The kid is obviously a very talented player but I wouldn't look to confirm anything."

Depay's quality can be seen below:

The player himself denied he held talks with Manchester United, per Alex Harris of the Daily Star, perhaps offering Liverpool a boost in the race for his signature.

"I know nothing myself so I have nothing to say," said Depay. "Otherwise I wouldn't say this. Of course I'm looking at beautiful leagues. And then it's always nice if clubs are interested. But I don't want to say anything about that. We'll see how things go."

Tony Barrett of The Times offers his knowledge:

Depay netted his 21st goal of the Eredivisie season during PSV's 3-2 win over Excelsior, a week after Phillip Cocu's men captured the Dutch title. The youngster is both an immense prospect and a player for the here and now, someone who can regularly make the difference in important matches.

A potential Liverpool front three of Depay, Raheem Sterling and (a fit) Daniel Sturridge would be as tricky as they come.

Rodgers has continued to look for a powerful spearhead since Luis Suarez's departure—bringing in Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert—but reports of Benteke could be an interesting avenue for the Reds.

Percy believes the in-form Belgian could cost more than £30 million, however, so it might be an idea for Liverpool to throw Lambert into a player-plus-cash deal, taking advantage of Villa's previous interest in the Englishman.

Benteke is a confidence player. He has scored nine in his last eight matches, per WhoScored.com, enjoying a much better turn of form since Tim Sherwood replaced Paul Lambert in the manager's chair.

He holds the ball up well, throws his weight around and is a sharp finisher inside the box. Benteke is also capable of curling home free-kicks and dropping slightly deep to allow effective runners beyond his position, a style perfect for Liverpool.

B/R UK's Sam Tighe looked at other stars who would slot right into Rodgers' team:

Liverpool will be just four points behind fourth-placed United if they beat Hull City during their game in hand. Considering United have now lost two in a row, fans will start to believe Champions League football is possible again.

Quality, developing players such as Depay and Benteke could take Liverpool to the next level. Significant cash needs to be spent if the Anfield club is to keep up with the Premier League's giants, as after three trophyless years on Merseyside, Rodgers' need for success is growing more desperate with each passing game.
