Canalys: HTC nips Apple, Samsung to become top smartphone vendor in US for Q3 2011

Boo! No, that's not your doorbell ringing again, that's HTC popping out of nowhere in order to toss a Nah-nah-nah-boo-boo in the direction of Samsung and Apple. Just days after Strategy Analytics published a global smartphone shipment report for Q3 2011, Canalys -- another formidable name in the sector -- has pushed out a report of its own. Not surprisingly, the global figures line up almost precisely with what we'd already heard, with Samsung's Q3 numbers rising above those from Apple, Nokia and the rest of the industry. The difference here, however, is the focal point on the US of A. Here in the States, Taiwan's own HTC is pulling rank; the aforesaid handset maker edged out Apple and Samsung by shipping 5.7 million smartphones.

All told, it owned "around a quarter of the market," with Samsung (4.9 million) claiming the second spot and Apple (4.6 million) pulling in for the bronze. Conspicuously absent from the leader board? RIM, which saw its volume decline 58 percent from a year ago and its US market share sink from 24 percent in Q3 2010 to just 9 percent this quarter. Our take? HTC (and Samsung, from a global perspective) best enjoy it while the quarter lasts -- as soon as the iPhone 4S and Nokia's spate of Windows Phone devices start figuring in, we're guessing that the top spots will be completely up for grabs all over again.

Officers' Quarters: Walking away

a woman walks toward a distant skyline
Every Monday, Scott Andrews contributes Officers' Quarters, a column about the ins and outs of guild leadership. He is the author of The Guild Leader's Handbook, available now from No Starch Press.

Marriage or ... your guild -- it's a fairly straightforward decision! However, it's not an easy thing to walk away from a community you've spent so much time leading and developing, even when you're feeling burned out on the game. This week's email features a guild leader who is simply torn up about the prospect of leaving the guild to another officer.
Scott,

I've been putting off writing this for a long time, but I don't think I can any more ...

During the days of Vanilla I came across a player (we'll call him "Dan") who helped direct me to a great guild ... The guild was small, close-knit, extremely helpful and the most at home I've felt in a gaming community in ages.

Through the years I worked my way up the ranks, eventually earning a spot as one of Dan's officers. Several years later, when Real Life go the best of Dan, I was chosen as his successor. There were other officers there longer, but Dan felt I understood his vision for the guild better than anyone else. I was honored, and have done my best to carry on the guild in the foot steps he left behind.

We're not the biggest guild on our server, or the most advanced raiders, or the best PvPers, but we're good, and we're well known. Our guild name has always been synonymous with quality people, and we let our members know that we value quality of character above all else. When guilds on our server fold, their members clamor to join us, and we're careful about who we let in. We've been around for over five years now, and I am damned proud of everything we've accomplished.

Don't let my glowing self appraisal fool you.

Wow, what a truly fantastic BlizzCon! Had a blast at the WoW Insider party meeting all of you. I want to take a moment to fire some shout-outs to everyone who approached me just to say hello. It's quite humbling!

With the new Mists of Pandaria expansion on the horizon, has anything really changed for healing? We didn't really experience much in terms of a philosophy change. In fact, healing itself was hardly even addressed at all. So what gives? What can we expect for healers going into 5.0? Not much, sadly, but read on anyway.

Daily iPad App: The Professional Chef

I'm not a professional chef, but I love to cook and serve up 30 plates of food each day. Like many amateur cooks, I struggle with recalling the differences between sauteing and braising and what makes a roux, a roux. That is why I was so excited to see The Professional Chef land on the iPad. Created by John Wiley & Sons and the Culinary Institute of America (CIA), the digital version of the chef's ultimate bible contains 1,200 pages filled with cooking information. There are 100 videos, 850 recipes, 175 figures, and 750 photographs of food. There's so much content packed into its 36 chapters, it's almost overwhelming, but in a good way.

The app uses Inkling, an interactive learning framework for the iPad, to organize and present its content. The app was designed as both a learning tool for professional chefs and a reference guide for amateurs. Besides its wealth of food information, The Professional Chef includes quizzes to measure your mastery of the content and a searchable glossary to help you brush up on your cooking terms. And if the glossary isn't enough, you can also access Google and Wikipedia from within the app. There's even a virtual notebook that's useful for storing bookmarks, highlights and other content you want to review.

The Professional Chef has a social component which includes a note-taking and discussion feature that lets you share your thoughts with others. These social features are great for chefs that want to share what they know or have discovered about the techniques in the book. They also fit in perfectly with a classroom scenario. Students can add notes and discussion topics to content within the book and then view responses left by the instructor and other students. You'll have to create an account to access the social portion of the learning network, but you can login using your email or Facebook account.

The interface is clean and very usable. You can tell the designers spent a lot of time organizing even the smallest details, like the navigation bar on the left which shows your relative location within the book and within a chapter. There's also an adjustable font size so you can pick one suitable for reading close up and another for when you are using the iPad book in the kitchen. This attention to detail makes using The Professional Chef a pleasurable experience.

What really sets this iPad book apart from others is its stunning content. The cooking and food information is very well organized into discrete chapters and each chapter is subdivided into individual topics. My favorite is the chapter on cooking eggs which is broken down into frying, poaching, scrambling, omelets and more. Each individual sub-section has a high-res picture of the topic, a comprehensive description of the food item and details on how to cook it.

Most sections also include a short video that demonstrates the cooking technique. The video isn't from your typical homegrown cooking show either; each one is a high quality production that makes the recipe or cooking technique look stunning. The video of the fried eggs will leave you wishing every meal was breakfast.

Best of all, the book covers more than just recipes. It contains cooking information and buying tips so you can learn how to identify the right type of food, select the freshest item and discover the best way to prepare it.

The 36-chapter Professional Chef costs a pricey $49.99, but you do get a wealth of cooking information for that money. Value-wise, I think it's worth it to get all that information packaged into one iPad app, but the casual chef who doesn't need all this information may not agree. Those who prefer not to buy the whole book can purchase individual chapters for $2.99 each, and the soup chapter (Chapter 14) is available for free.

You can purchase The Professional Chef from the App Store or check out a demo on Inkling's website.

Report: Italian man gets $44,500 parking ticket that dates to 208 AD

Never underestimate the power of a clerical error. A couple in Sicily were recently treated to an eye-popping $44,500 parking fine after interest and late fees were accounted for. According to the officer who wrote the citation, the car was illegally parked in the year 208 during the reign of Roman Emperor Septimius Severus. Needless to say, there were some chronological issues at play. According to The Associated Free Press, the shock of the fine was so severe that it sent the wife into a dizzy spell. She was treated at a local hospital and released.

Not surprisingly, the ticket should have read 2008. Local police acknowledged the error and reduced the fine to a much more manageable $144, which the family later paid.

Early Rehabilitation in Sepsis : A Prospective Randomised Controlled Trial investigating Functional and Physiological Outcomes The i-PERFORM Trial (Protocol Article)

Background Patients with sepsis syndromes can have worse outcomes for physical function, quality of life and survival. Early intensive care rehabilitation can improve the outcome in general Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients, however no investigations have specifically looked at patients with sepsis syndromes. The 'i-PERFORM Trial' will investigate if early targeted rehabilitation is both safe and effective in patients with sepsis syndromes admitted to ICU.Methods/Design A single-centred blinded randomized controlled trial will be conducted in Brisbane, Australia. Participants (n=252) will include those [greater than or equal to] 18 years, mechanically ventilated for [greater than or equal to] 48 hours and diagnosed with a sepsis syndrome. Participants will be randomised to an intervention arm which will undergo an early targeted rehabilitation program according to the level of arousal, strength and cardiovascular stability and a control group which will receive normal care. The primary outcome measures will be physical function tests on discharge from ICU (The Acute Care Index of Function and The Physical Function ICU Test). Health-related quality of life will be measured using the Short Form-36 and the psychological component will be tested using The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Secondary measures will include inflammatory biomarkers; Interleukin-6, Interleukin-10 and Tumour Necrosis Factor-alpha, peripheral blood mitochondrial DNA content and lactate, fat free muscle mass, tissue oxygenation and microcirculatory flow.Discussion The 'i-PERFORM Trial' will determine whether early rehabilitation for patients with sepsis is effective at improving patient outcomes with functional and physiological parameters reflecting long and short-term effects of early exercise and the safety in its application in critical illness.Trial Registration ACTRN12610000808044

Olly: the web-connected robot that converts pings to odors

What if there were a way to add smells to the things you see every single day on the internet? To some, just the thought of that there scenario would induce nausea. To others -- primarily those who spend their days Googling various rose gardens around the globe -- it just might be the extra dimension to surfing that they've been waiting for. If you happen to find yourself tucked into that second camp, we'd like to introduce you to Olly, the web-connected robot that's capable of emitting smells based on inputs from the 'net. The critter was dreamed up by Tim Pryde and the folks surrounding the Don-8r (Foundry, if you're curious), and while there's currently no way to purchase one, instructions are forthcoming to produce your own with a 3D printer. In fact, it's recommended that users build a few, stack 'em up and connect different inputs (Twitter, Instagram, your mum's vegetarian cooking blog) to each one. It's the perfect cacophony... or the perfect disaster, depending on your browsing habits.

[Thanks, Tim]

UFC 137 Results: Does Nick Diaz Have the Most Underrated Striking in MMA?

Nick Diaz pawed his way to his eleventh straight win in a complete dissection of MMA legend BJ Penn at UFC 137.

There was a plethora of doubt surrounding Diaz coming into the bout. Despite his impressive win streak, only one of Diaz's opponents were actually ranked as a top-10 welterweight.

The Stockton native certainly quieted some of his doubters on Saturday night, wearing down and busting up one of the greatest fighters of all time.

With Diaz's slow and peppering style, it's easy to overlook the overall effectiveness of his striking. Diaz is an incredibly well-conditioned fighter, and he forces opponents to fight at a constant and steady pace.

As for whether or not his striking is underrated, it would take an untrained eye to underrate Diaz's striking.

He has shown great efficiency in finding range, picking his shots and avoiding counters. For years, Penn has been respected as one of the best strikers in the world. Throughout his entire career, no one has ever handled Penn on the feet like Diaz did.

You have to give credit where it's due.

Diaz isn't just one of the best strikers in the world. He may be the best striker in the entire welterweight division.

Longtime fans have to respect the improvements Diaz has made with his striking. This is definitely a different Diaz than the one that fought Sean Sherk, Diego Sanchez and Joe Riggs back in his early UFC days.

He can attribute his striking improvements to pro-boxing stars Andre Ward and Luisito Espinosa, who have both trained alongside Diaz in helping him prepare for MMA bouts.

"Don't be scared homie."

After seeing the striking display Diaz put on Penn, fighters may think twice before standing and exchanging with the former Strikeforce champion.

Acute toxicity in prostate cancer patients treated with and without image-guided radiotherapy

Background:
Image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) increases the accuracy of treatment delivery through daily target localisation. We report on toxicity symptoms experienced during radiotherapy treatment, with and without IGRT in prostate cancer patients treated radically.
Methods:
Between 2006 and 2009, acute toxicity data for ten symptoms were collected prospectively onto standardized assessment forms. Toxicity was scored during radiotherapy, according to the Common Terminology Criteria Adverse Events V3.0, for 275 prostate cancer patients before and after the implementation of a fiducial marker IGRT program and dose escalation from 74Gy in 37 fractions, to 78Gy in 39 fractions. Margins and planning constraints were maintained the same during the study period. The symptoms scored were urinary frequency, cystitis, bladder spasm, urinary incontinence, urinary retention, diarrhoea, haemorrhoids, proctitis, anal skin discomfort and fatigue. Analysis was conducted for the maximum grade of toxicity and the median number of days from the onset of that toxicity to the end of treatment.
Results:
In the IGRT group, 14228 toxicity scores were analysed from 249 patients. In the non-IGRT group, 1893 toxicity scores were analysed from 26 patients. Urinary frequency greater than or equal to G3 affected 23% and 7% in the non-IGRT and IGRT group respectively (p=0.0188). Diarrhoea greater than or equal to G2 affected 15% and 3% of patients in the non-IGRT and IGRT groups (p=0.0174). Fatigue greater than or equal to G2 affected 23% and 8% of patients in the non-IGRT and IGRT groups (p=0.0271). The median number of days with a toxicity was higher for greater than or equal to G2 (p=0.0179) and greater than or equal to G3 frequency (p=0.0027), greater than or equal to G2 diarrhoea (p=0.0033) and greater than or equal to G2 fatigue (p=0.0088) in the non-IGRT group compared to the IGRT group. Other toxicities were not of significant statistical difference.
Conclusions:
In this study, prostate cancer patients treated radically with IGRT had less severe urinary frequency, diarrhoea and fatigue during treatment compared to patients treated with non-IGRT. Onset of these symptoms was earlier in the non-IGRT group. IGRT results in less acute toxicity during radiotherapy in prostate cancer.

Report: How Steve Jobs got away with not having a license plate

Jobs reportedly drove a Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG without ever affixing a plate, leading many to speculate that Apple's powerful CEO had cut some back room deal with California's DMV, or that he had some high-tech bar code plate on his car, or that he just didn't mind paying whatever citations he received for his different thinking.

Now we have a report that claims to settle the issue once and for all, and explain how you too can drive plate-less in California if you're so inclined.

Compartmentation of glycogen metabolism revealed from 13C isotopologue distributions

Background:
Stable isotope tracers are used to assess metabolic flux profiles in living cells. The existing methods of measurement average out the isotopic isomer distribution in metabolites throughout the cell, whereas the knowledge of compartmental organization of analyzed pathways is crucial for the evaluation of true fluxes. That is why we accepted a challenge to create a software tool that allows deciphering the compartmentation of metabolites based on the analysis of average isotopic isomer distribution.
Results:
The software Isodyn, which simulates the dynamics of isotopic isomer distribution in central metabolic pathways, was supplemented by algorithms facilitating the transition between various analyzed metabolic schemes, and by the tools for model discrimination. It simulated 13C isotope distributions in glucose, lactate, glutamate and glycogen, measured by mass spectrometry after incubation of hepatocytes in the presence of only labeled glucose or glucose and lactate together (with label either in glucose or lactate). The simulations assumed either a single intracellular hexose phosphate pool, or also channeling of hexose phosphates resulting in a different isotopic composition of glycogen. Model discrimination test was applied to check the consistency of both models with experimental data. Metabolic flux profiles, evaluated with the accepted model that assumes channeling, revealed the range of changes in metabolic fluxes in liver cells.
Conclusions:
The analysis of compartmentation of metabolic networks based on the measured 13C distribution was included in Isodyn as a routine procedure. The advantage of this implementation is that, being a part of evaluation of metabolic fluxes, it does not require additional experiments to study metabolic compartmentation. The analysis of experimental data revealed that the distribution of measured 13C-labeled glucose metabolites is inconsistent with the idea of perfect mixing of hexose phosphates in cytosol. In contrast, the observed distribution indicates the presence of a separate pool of hexose phosphates that is channeled towards glycogen synthesis.

Escort marries social networking and radar detection with Android/iPhone app [w/video]

Now we're not suggesting that you're a lawbreaker, but if you're a social networker and you'd like to know where speedtraps are - for no reason at all - then Escort might be able to help. Makers of the Passport line of detectors, Escort has started a mobile app-supported network called Escort Live that features Bluetooth notifications.

When an Escort detector using a special Bluetooth-enabled cord - called SmartCord Live - registers a trap, it sends that info to the cloud, which then forwards that location to your smartphone to warn you of the trap if you're about to be in range. It can also identify red light cameras and other types of road surveillance systems.

The app works with certain Apple iPhone and Android handsets, and a subscription to the service through 2012 costs $79.95. That strikes us as rather pricy, but we suppose it's cheaper than a speeding ticket. Check out a video of it in action after the jump.

15 Minutes of Fame: Honors student hits the mark in WoW and life

From Hollywood celebrities to the guy next door, millions of people have made World of Warcraft a part of their lives. How do you play WoW? We're giving each approach its own 15 Minutes of Fame.

This might be just a little bit embarrassing, but by way of introduction this week, I'd like to reprint the note this week's featured player emailed us last December in response to a call-out for WoW-playing honors students. Its summary of achievements really can't be beat.

Hello Lisa, I'm 17, and ... I've played World of Warcraft since late Burning Crusade while maintaining a 91.2 GPA. I've even taken several Advanced Placement courses, which offer me college credit including world history, human geography, literature and composition, and physics.

In addition to completing multiple 10-man hard modes of Icecrown Citadel, I've taken on a lot of other responsibilities as a student. I've been a National Honors Society member for three years along with a member and co-captain of an award winning robotics program sponsored by FIRST. On top of that, I don a swimsuit after school for the varsity level swim team. I've played trombone throughout my years of WoW (nine years of the trombone total), playing in the school's jazz band, symphonic band, symphonic orchestra, and marching band, in which I also hold the position of associate drum major. Just this year, I became one of the founding members of the Math Honors Society, in which I spend my mornings before school tutoring other students who just don't quite understand the work. As another bit of school community service, I head over to the middle school as a co-coach, mentor, and former member of the FIRST Lego League robotics club/team.

Now, as if my schedule outside of World of Warcraft wasn't busy enough, I'm a second-degree black belt who has studied martial arts for nearly 13 years while also teaching classes, aiding at seminars, and working with disabled/mentally impaired individuals. You'd think I'd have no time for anything at this point, but somehow I squeeze in another job cooking in a New York City restaurant. It's more of an on-call basis, but I cook, wait tables, and assist in instructing cooking classes as well. For my summers, I will admit I do end up taking small breaks from WoW, but it's allowed me to see the British Isles, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Egypt, and a decent amount of other countries/places. It's also given me time to become a certified SCUBA diver who's Rescue certified and qualified as an Emergency First Responder as well as picking up some International Yacht Training sailing certifications.

Oh, did I mention I have four 80's and a 72?

Today, Kuhfleisch (Kirin Tor) is an 18-year-old freshman at Texas A&M University at Galveston. He's still keeping up the grades, still keeping up the extracurriculars -- and still keeping up World of Warcraft.

Discriminant analysis of intermediate brain atrophy rates in longitudinal diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease

Diagnosing Alzheimer's disease through MRI neuroimaging biomarkers has been used as a complementary marker for traditional clinical markers to improve diagnostic accuracy and also help in developing new pharmacotherapeutic trials. It has been revealed that longitudinal analysis of the whole brain atrophy has the power of discriminating Alzheimer's disease and elderly normal controls. In this work, effect of involving intermediate atrophy rates and impact of using uncorrelated principal components of these features instead of original ones on discriminating normal controls and Alzheimer's disease subjects, is inspected. In fact, linear discriminative analysis of atrophy rates is used to classify subjects into Alzheimer's disease and controls. Leave-one-out cross- validation has been adopted to evaluate the generalization rate of the classifier along with its memorization. Results show that incorporating uncorrelated version of intermediate features leads to the same memorization performance as the original ones but higher generalization rate. As a conclusion, it is revealed that in a longitudinal study, using intermediate MRI scans and transferring them to an uncorrelated feature space can improve diagnostic accuracy.

NFL Picks Week 8: Giants, Texans Are Home Favorites to Jump on

Don’t be a wimp.

Taking a large spread is always easier when the team is playing at home.

This week there are two home favorites that force you to lay bundles of points, but are worth taking because of extraordinary circumstances.

(Spreads courtesy of Covers.com.)

New York Giants (-9.5) vs. Miami Dolphins

The Giants have won four of their last five games, are getting their best defensive player Justin Tuck back and are rested coming off a bye.

The Dolphins are fresh off a complete collapse against the Broncos and are playing with the knowledge that their coach is a dead duck—as is the season in general.

With little motivation, expect the defensive effort to be severely lacking.

Considering Matt Moore is questionable with bruised ribs and J.P. Losman might have to play, this is going to be an absolute romp.

Prediction: Giants 38, Dolphins 16

Key Trends:

Dolphins are 0-3-1 ATS in their last four road games.

Dolphins are 0-6-1 ATS in their last seven games as an underdog.

Giants are 22-8-2 ATS in their last 32 games in October.

Houston Texans -9.5 vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jags are coming off a huge victory and only have six days to prepare for a divisional opponent that has owned them of late. They won the two matchups last year by an average of 12 points, and now the Jags have a rookie QB that looks overmatched in his small sample size.

The Texans finally have a healthy Arian Foster, making the offense incredibly balanced and explosive. WR Andre Johnson is expected to return and the Texans currently have a three-game win streak in the division.

The Jags are 31st in the NFL, averaging a mere 12 points a game, and the Texans lead the AFC sacks.

Too many factors trending in Houston’s favor to ignore.

Prediction: Texans 27, Jaguars 13

Key Trends:

Home team is 4-1 ATS in their last five meetings.

Jaguars are 1-4 ATS in their last five meetings in Houston.

Texans are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as a favorite.

Texans are 4-1 ATS in their last five vs. AFC South.

Apple's ALAC codec is now open source

Apple Lossless, also known as ALAC, is a lossless audio codec Apple developed some time ago for digital music. The codec compresses music files anywhere from 40-60 percent of their original size with no discernible loss in audio quality or fidelity. "A decoded ALAC stream is bit-for-bit identical to the original uncompressed audio file," according to its description. iTunes on the Mac and virtually all of Apple's portable devices support the codec, and it's been my personal format of choice when ripping songs from a CD source.

The big news today is that ALAC is now open source. "Apple Lossless Audio Codec sources are available under the Apache license," according to Mac OS Forge, and the project "contains the sources for the ALAC encoder and decoder."

The project also includes alacconvert, a command line utility that can read and write audio data to and from Core Audio Format (CAF) and WAVE files. "A description of a 'magic cookie' for use with files based on the ISO base media file format (e.g. MP4 and M4A) is included as well," Mac OS forge says.

Open sourcing ALAC may or may not lead to more widespread adoption of the codec, but for purely selfish reasons I hope it does. While FLAC fulfills many of the same functions as Apple's in-house lossless codec, it has no support on iOS devices, and re-encoding FLAC files into something that iTunes won't choke on has always been a pet peeve of mine. If more people begin adopting ALAC instead of FLAC, it'll make life a lot easier for audiophiles.

Environmental Toxin Bisphenol A Can Affect Newborn Brain

Newborn mice that are exposed to Bisphenol A develop changes in their spontaneous behavior and evince poorer adaptation to new environments, as well hyperactivity as young adults. This has been shown by researchers at Uppsala University. Their study also revealed that one of the brain's most important signal systems, the cholinergic signal system, is affected by Bisphenol A and that the effect persisted into adulthood. Our environment contains a number of pollutants, including Bisphenol A, which is used in plastics in a number of different applications...

Report: Bribery scandal leaves F1's commercial future in jeopardy

Bernie Ecclestone

Bernie Ecclestone has controlled the commercial rights to Formula One for so long it seems like he always has and always will. But that's not exactly the full story. While Ecclestone was the first to negotiate for control over the sport's commercial aspects - namely its television broadcasting rights - there was a time when he had to relinquish control. And that time may come again soon.

After wrestling for the commercial rights as a team owner and head of the Formula One Constructors Association (FOCA) in the 1970s, Ecclestone's burgeoning business empire was forced to sell a controlling interest to other parties. A German media conglomerate called the Kirch Group ended up acquiring much of the shares, but when it folded, the German state-owned bank Bayern LB ended up holding the bag.

Ecclestone eventually got the funds together to buy back F1 in the early 2000s, but the way in which he and Bayern LB went about it is now the subject of what's emerging as one of the largest bribery scandals of our time.

Prosecutors allege that Ecclestone gave an enormous bribe of $44 million to one Gerhard Gribkowsky, who at the time served as chief risk-assessment officer at Bayern LB. $41.4 million of that bribe, in turn, reportedly came from Bayern LB itself, and since the bank is owned by the government, that essentially means that Gribkowsky pocketed all that cash from public coffers. Ecclestone claims the payment was essentially blackmailed out of him as Gribkowsky threatened to falsify evidence of Ecclestone's financial mismanagement.

The ongoing trial comes at a time when Ecclestone's Formula One Management is gearing up to renegotiate with the FIA (the sport's technical governing body) and the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA, the successor of the previously-mentioned FOCA) over the terms of the secretive Concorde Agreement by which the sport's commercial earnings are distributed.

The outcome of the trial stands to seriously shake up the nature of the relationship between the relevant parties, and could result in the teams taking a larger share of the commercial rights and the resulting revenues - and potentially awarding contracts to new parties. A coalition consisting of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp, Carlos Slim's Telmex and Fiat chairman John Elkann's Exor has expressed interest in acquiring the sport's broadcasting rights. With F1's affairs in such tumult, there's no telling what could happen.
