Latest build of Mac OS X 10.6.8 hints at Lion upgrade path through Mac App Store

Yesterday we told you that Apple released a third build of Mac OS X 10.6.8 to developers. At the time there were no known issues with the build and developers were asked to focus on AirPort, Networking, Graphics Drivers, QuickTime, VPN, and the Mac App Store. Now it turns out that the Mac App Store may be the biggest component of that 10.6.8 upgrade.

German site fscklog was the first to point out that the release notes for the 10.6.8 build specifically notes that this point upgrade to Lion will "Enhance the Mac App Store to get your Mac ready to upgrade to Mac OS X Lion." The release notes all but confirm that Apple will be pushing the Mac App Store as the primary upgrade mechanism for Mac users. Also, if 10.6.8 is released before WWDC, which starts on June 6, it could be a signal that Apple is set to release Mac OS X 10.7 Lion sooner than most people expect -- which is something we've heard they might do.

Quantum effect transistor is the world's smallest, hopes to make a big impact

What's better than billions of transistors? Billions of miniature two-nanometer ones, leaving room for billions more. A team of researchers accomplished just that, using the quantum effect to shrink these semiconductors -- and set a new size record in the process -- while also managing to keep them operating at room temperature (note: that photo above is from a different team's study). The team of South Korean, Japanese, and British researchers at Chungbuk National University expect them to "enhance the capabilities of mobile electronic devices" -- a mighty vague claim if ever there was one. Not one for modesty, lead researcher Choi Jung-bum proclaims that it "effectively changes the paradigm of such devices." With no word on mass production, though, we'll just have to wait and see for ourselves how big of an impact these lilliputian circuits will have.

[Thanks, Rohit]

The funny thing about speed is that it's relative, at least in a cognitive sense. Sure, you can measure the pace at which a moving object travels over ground, water, air, or even space. But place a Formula One race car on a wide-open track-say, Turkey's Istanbul Park, for example-and it doesn't look or feel like it's going nearly as fast as the same car does along the tight, winding streets of Monte Carlo. That's what makes the Monaco Grand Prix so exciting. This year's especially, packed as it was with nail-biting action. Follow the jump to read how it went down.

Arcane Brilliance: Do mages need to be hit-capped?

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Arcane Brilliance for arcane, fire and frost mages. This week, we're discussing a topic near and dear to a caster's heart: the problems associated with reaching the hit cap. Because when you conjure a flaming boulder from the ether and hurl it toward the hideous walking nest of claws and teeth that's currently eating your tank, you don't want to miss.

We've discussed this before. But this is a new expansion, and a new crop of players seems to be playing it, and I just had to berate a holy pally in Zul'Gurub for like 15 minutes about how he doesn't want the Hakkari Loa Drape that just dropped because he doesn't need the hit rating on it and he should give it to the elemental shaman instead -- and did I mention it took 15 minutes to convince him of this? Needless to say, the run was long, yeah, and lo, it was also full of wiping.

So the facts are these: The game has been out a long time, but the playerbase is constantly rotating. It may be hard for old-timers to accept, but even the most basic of gameplay concepts still need to be explained, and ignorance of a thing doesn't constitute a bad player, necessarily -- just a new one or one who is returning after an extended absence.

All of this is the long way of answering the many emails and comments I've gotten lately about hit rating, its importance, and whether or not mages still need to worry about capping it.

The short way? Cap hit.

Apple education deal rumored for WWDC

BGR broke out a rumor today suggesting Apple may unveil a new Back-To-School promotion at WWDC. As part of this sale, everyone who buys a new Mac with their educational discount would receive a free iPod touch or $200 off the cost of an iPad.

For the past several years, Apple has kicked off a back-to-school promotion in late May or early June. It would not be surprising to see this discount extended to the iPad this year.

The WWDC part of this rumor, though, has us scratching our heads. In previous years, these promotions were announced on Apple's website. There was no event, not even a press release. Yes, they occurred around the time of WWDC, but they were not announced at WWDC. Why would this year be any different?

Click It Or Ticket More Than Just A Rhyme

SPANISH FORT, Alabama - Alabama State Troopers are serious about enforcing traffic laws this Memorial Day weekend.

Driving around without your seatbelt could cost you $30 dollars if you’re caught. Alabama State Troopers will be out in force this weekend enforcing traffic laws. Even though neglecting to buckle up may not seem like a big deal, troopers are taking it seriously. In 2010, 530 people were killed on Alabama highways.

“60% of those fatalities were not properly wearing seatbelts so it's very important we enforce those laws during this Click It or Ticket campaign,” says Trooper Greg Eubanks. I got to ride along with him today. It was a bit of a challenge finding someone without a seatbelt; it seems a lot of people are getting the message. Finding a speeder was a bit quicker. State Troopers want you to slow down and stay safe this weekend.

Cincinnati Reds: Have the Reds Shortstops Really Been a Disappointment?

All people seem to talk about is the Reds struggles. Yes, it's obvious that they are not playing to their full potential, and at times are letting games get away.

The shortstop position seems to be one of the biggest problems with the team, and everybody is voicing an opinion on how to manage Paul Janish and 2010 World Series MVP Edgar Renteria.

Janish is a stellar shortstop who has a lot of abilities with the glove and a great arm, but at times is the polar opposite with the bat.

Edgar Renteria at one time was among the best shortstops in the majors. A complete talent with great defense and clutch at-bats, something we even saw last season when he helped the San Fransisco Giants win the World Series.

So far these two have struggled a bit at the plate, and yes, as passionate Reds fans, it's frustrating at times. But if you look at it, these guys have helped quite a bit as well.

Edgar has been pretty clutch this year with runners in scoring position. Look at the April 30th game against the Florida Marlins, when he knocked in the game winning run in the 10th inning to top off a four run comeback over his former team.

How many times this year has Paul Janish made a jaw dropping defensive play that kept a base hit from happening? It seems like he does this two or three times a week. Oh, and let's not forget that he was robbed of a run at home tonight against the Braves.

Now if you expect Barry Larkin to come through the door, it's not going to happen. But honestly, these guys haven't been a major disappointment.

Word is the Reds are going to try to upgrade the shortstop position, and rightfully so. Recently I wrote about the idea of Jose Reyes possibly being a trade candidate.

Perhaps Todd Frazier is a guy who can be a shortstop. Frazier plays pretty much everywhere he can on the field and has very impressive stats for AAA Louisville.

All in all, these two have contributed when the Reds needed them too. It may not be every time they're at the plate, but really they are helping this team.

Rumormill: Alfa Romeo 4C to spawn Abarth, Maserati variants?

Alfa Romeo 4C Concept
Alfa Romeo 4C Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

If Alfa Romeo wanted to get people talking with the debut of its 4C concept in Geneva, they succeeded. The Internet is abuzz with rumors of its production potential. There have already been reports that the Alfa will spearhead the marque's full-fledged return to North America, to be followed by both Spider and Abarth versions. Now, word is that Maserati could get a derivative, too.

If the reports prove accurate and the spinoffs come to fruition, that would mean three brands within the Fiat group will get their own versions of the lightweight, mid-engined, four-cylinder sports car. And that's before any of the Chrysler brands get a crack at it, because a Dodge version to pick up where the Circuit concept left off could be most tempting. The Maserati version would naturally be positioned and appointed differently from the Alfa or Abarth models. The question is whether the market can bear more than one Elise rival from Fiat/Chrysler, let alone multiples.

Report: Chrysler-owned dealership under California DMV scrutiny

Chrysler Motor Village LA
Automakers have traditionally had little luck owning car dealerships, but that hasn't stopped them from trying. A recent effort by Chrysler led to the creation of Motor Village in downtown Los Angeles, but the local dealer association is none too pleased about the facility's location.

Back in 2008, Chrysler purchased La Brea Avenue Motors and in January, the automaker moved the operation to its current downtown LA location. The $30 million facility is now home to Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, Jeep and Fiat stores. Unfortunately, it resides within 10 miles of three other Chrysler dealers, which is a violation of California franchising laws. The local dealer association brought the matter to the attention of the California New Motor Vehicle Board back in March, and the agency has since voted unanimously to have the California DMV open an investigation.

California makes one-year exceptions to the franchise law-for example, if the automaker partners with a local dealership that invests in operational improvements and plans to buy out the OEM stake-but in the case of the Motor Village, Chrysler doesn't qualify. Lawyers for the automaker tell Automotive News that the Chrysler has attempted to find such an investor but has been unsuccessful so far. The search for a partner continues, but for now, Chrysler says the store "a test bed for new retail and marketing ideas."

If the DMV finds Chrysler to be in violation of the franchise agreement, California could pull its business license.

Champions League Video: Watch Barcelona Fans Take to the Streets After Victory

On Saturday, Barcelona defeated Manchester United in the finals of the UEFA Champions League. It was a dominant 3-1 victory for the Barcelona team led by Lionel Messi, the best soccer player on the planet right now.

And in typical soccer fashion, the party got started in Barcelona shortly after the fans saw their team win its fourth UEFA title and third in six seasons. The fans lit things on fire, turned cars over and beat the crap out of each other.

Maybe I am in the minority on this one, but I don't get the purpose of the whole rioting after a team wins a championship. Maybe I just don't "get" the soccer fan mentality, but what goes through your mind when someone says, "Hey, let's go on the streets and start trashing this place because Barcelona just won a championship!"

Of course, it takes an equally intellectual person to reply, "HELL YEAH!" So there is plenty of blame to go around.

In this particular video, there are people being dragged down the streets by the police, a reported 90 people were injured, including two seriously, and bottles were being thrown.

But all of that pales in comparison to knowing that their beloved Barcelona has won another championship. They are the best team in the world, and they win all the time. Does one more title really mean THAT much to these people?

Based on the video, apparently it does.

Fake Social Security Administration Officer Strikes Again

SUMMERDALE, Alabama - Police in Baldwin County say a man posing as an officer with the Social Security Administration who sexually assaulted a Summerdale woman has attempted to contact at least three other women in the area.

Police in Summerdale say a man who sexually assaulted a woman while claiming to be an officer with the Social Security Administration has targeted at least three other women in Baldwin County.

Last week, Pamela Thrailkill told police a heavy-set man weighing 300 pounds, called her and said he was with the Social Security Administration. The man said he needed to come over and take "measurements" for Thrailkill's pending disability case. When he got to her mobile home, Thrailkill say the man fondled her breasts.

Police say at least three other women have come forward, claiming a man posing as a Social Security Administration Officer tried to contact them about their disability cases and asked to come over.

In one of the incidents, the man identified himself as "Bob Carmax." Police are checking into all the reports, but aren't sure if Carmax is the real name of the suspect they're looking for. Quantcast

Addon Spotlight: Distribute right with LootCouncil Lite

Each week, WoW Insider brings you a fresh look at reader-submitted UIs as well as Addon Spotlight, which focuses on the backbone of the WoW gameplay experience: the user interface. Everything from bags to bars, buttons to DPS meters and beyond -- your addons folder will never be the same. This week, loot without the numbers and randomness.

One of the areas of addons that I haven't touched on in this column with any real depth is loot addons. It's not because loot addons are not important or necessary but because my past experience with loot addons were never impressive or positive. The first guild that I was a part of that actually used an addon based loot system put their stock in EPGP, a loot system based on effort and gear points. To me, EPGP was a convoluted mess at times; the addon would bug out, and it all just left a nasty taste in my mouth. Plus, I had come from a guild loot culture developed around the famous "don't be a jerk" system, in which people would make judgment calls based on who really needed items over others. This worked 90% of the time.

I've steered away from loot addons because of my poor experience with EPGP, much as I originally strayed away from an Addon Spotlight on Tidy Plates because of my bad experience with that addon. Granted, that wasn't Tidy Plate's fault in the least, but my own addon configuration problems. Suffice to say, I'm giving loot addons another shot, mostly because the guild I am currently raiding with uses LootCouncil Lite -- and I've fallen in love.

UFC 131: What Is The Key To Victory For Shane Carwin At UFC 131?

UFC 131 Will Be Shane Carwin's Big Return To The Octagon, But Has His Style Evolved Enough To Be Successful Against The Best Striker In The Heavyweight Division?

Shane Carwin will be making his much-anticipated return to the octagon in 13 days at UFC 131 against Junior dos Santos in a fight that will determine the No. 1 contender for the heavyweight championship. This will be the biggest fight in Carwin's career thus far.

Carwin was last seen tapping out to Brock Lesnar at UFC 116 in a fight that Carwin completely dominated in the first round. But he used so much energy trying to knock Lesnar out that he was unable to do anything after that round.

Now, in an attempt to get back into championship contention, Carwin will have to stand and trade with the best pure striker in the heavyweight division.

The biggest key for Carwin will be how much stamina he has in him. He has never been a guy that is going to win an endurance competition, but because he is so big and powerful he has won all of his fights in the first round.

Must Read: The 50 Best Entrance Songs In UFC History

The only time that he has gone past the first round was in the fight against Lesnar.

Having nearly a year off, which Carwin has had, can be a blessing or a curse. On the positive side, it gave him the time to really study his past performances and improve upon some things that he doesn't do particularly well. On the negative side, he underwent surgery and that completely screws up a fighter's training regimen.

His power will still be there, no one is doubting that. But, and this is the biggest question, has he been able to do enough cardio work to last in a fight with dos Santos?

Until I see it, I can't believe it. Dos Santos is the best non-title holding heavyweight fighter in the world. He is so good both offensively and defensively that there are very few people that you would favor over him right now.

The key for Carwin will be the end of the first round. If he is showing power and strength, which is his trademark, he can hang with dos Santos for a long fight. If he isn't showing anything, the fight will be over in a heartbeat.
