Google Now added to search app on iPhone, iPad

Google Now and voice search available for iPhone, iPadGoogle has updated its search app for iOS to version 3, adding a tool that until this point was available only on devices running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean or better -- Google Now. Now adds some impressive features to your device. As Google notes, it adds "the right information, at just the right time" to your iPhone or iPad.

Back in March, a very official-looking promo video for Google Now on iOS leaked out. The same video is prominently featured in the new version of Google's app, so it seems that it was legit.

To enable Google Now, update or install the Google Search app, sign in and then swipe up from the bottom of the display screen. Google includes a short video explaining how the app works, providing "cards" full of contexual information where and when you need it.

If you're about to drive to work, the app can tell you how long it's going to take to get there and route you around traffic. If you're near a public transit station, you may get information on when the next train leaves, and if you're heading out on a trip you may well see your flight info displayed in a card.

Google's powering Now by looking into your data on other Google services (calendar, search, contacts and maps among them) so if this sort of oversight makes you twitchy, you can choose not to turn the Now capability on in the search app.

Voice search has improved in the new app. Previously, users could tap a microphone icon to enter search terms; not that exciting, really. Now you can pretty much ask Google Now anything and get responses almost immediately -- the service both seems to understand your requests better and responds faster than Apple's own Siri, so it will be a great addition to the iPhone for those of us who like to carry on conversations with our handheld devices.

Breakfast Topic: The best things are above you

Breakfast Topic Look up
It's really easy, both in life and in WoW, to rush by without taking a moment to smell the roses, to survey the beauty that's all around us. I'm as guilty of this as the next person, always hurrying in-game, always trying to get to the next spot, the next level, the next piece of gear, the next round rating number.

So I was on an alt in the Alliance base on Thunder Isle, when I had to alt-tab out to respond to an IM. I then put my laptop down and afk'd, and on my return I was looking at the library you see in the header image. What you might not be able to see is the scholars in the alcoves, reading away. I'd never noticed it before, because all I usually do there is hearthstone and then run straight out the door.

It took me ages to even notice the amazing swirling sky in parts of Pandaria, with its sha-styled tendrils. But what about you, do you look up? You really should. And what are your favorite bits of sky in the game? Your favorite treasures, indoor or out, that you'll miss if you're not glancing occasionally towards the heavens?

Adding copy-to-clipboard rollovers in Contacts app via AppleScript

Adding Copy to Clipboard Rollovers in Contacts App via AppleScriptApple's Contacts app includes a lot of great shortcuts for initiating different forms of communication. Just click an email address, phone number or URL field label to display a list of available options. You can send an email, show a phone number in large type or start a FaceTime call, for example. Curiously, one shortcut that's absent from most of these popups is one for copying the email address, phone number, URL, etc. to the clipboard. Mailing addresses are one exception, as they provide an option to copy a mailing label. But, other fields don't include this option. Sure, you could just select a phone number, email address, URL, etc., and press Command+C to copy it. But, what fun is that? It sure would be nice if there were just more handy copy-to-clipboard shortcuts instead. With the help of AppleScript, you can add your own. Here's how...

Writing the Script

The following steps demonstrate how to add a Copy to Clipboard shortcut to phone number fields in the Contacts app. If you have any trouble following along, you can download the complete script here, along with ones for email address and URL fields too.

1. Launch AppleScript Editor (in /Applications/Utilities)

2. Create a new script document and enter the following code:

Note: If you want to create a version of this script for email address or URL fields, just change the action property handler to return the appropriate field type, i.e.,

on action property
return "email"
end action property

or...

on action property
return "url"
end action property

Installing and Using the Script

In order for the script you created to appear in the Contacts app, it needs to be saved in the proper place.

1. Quit Contacts if it's running.

2. Save the script you created as Contacts > Copy Phone to Clipboard.scpt, in script format, into the ~/Library/Address Book Plug-Ins folder in your Home directory. If this folder doesn't already exist, go ahead and create it.

Adding Copy to Clipboard Rollovers in Contacts App via AppleScript

Now, just relaunch the Contacts app. When you click on a phone number field label, you should see a new option for copying the phone number to the clipboard. Now, repeat the steps above for email addresses and URLs to enhance the Contacts app even further.

Adding Copy to Clipboard Rollovers in Contacts App via AppleScript

This marks my last scheduled post for the TUAW for a bit. Hopefully, you'll see more of me here in the future. In the meantime, feel free to reach out to me on Twitter to say "Hello," ask a scripting question or two, suggest a future topic, etc. Until next time, Happy Scripting!

Incidental discovery of circle contact lens by MRI: you can't scan my poker face, circle contact lens as a potential MRI hazard

Background:
Circle contact lenses, also known as color contact lenses and big eye contact lenses, are a type of cosmetic contact lens. It is not generally known that a circle contact lens usually contains iron oxide and other metals, which means their use during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a potential hazard.Case presentationWe present a rare case of incidental discovery of circle contact lenses by MRI and MRI images of circle lenses in vitro.
Conclusions:
Circle contact lenses usually contain iron oxide, which is a known source of susceptibility artifact on MRI. Not only radiologists and radiographers but also referring physicians should be familiar with the imaging findings and potential risk of scanning circle contact lenses by MRI.

Putting A Price On Life-Saving Helicopter Transport Of Trauma Victims

Researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine have for the first time determined how often emergency medical helicopters need to help save the lives of seriously injured people to be considered cost-effective compared with ground ambulances. The researchers found that if an additional 1.6 percent of seriously injured patients survive after being transported by helicopter from the scene of injury to a level-1 or level-2 trauma center, then such transport should be considered cost-effective...

Oakland Athletics: 3 Players Who Desperately Need to Make an Adjustment

After a blistering 12-4 start, the A's have since gone 2-8 pending Monday's series opener against the Los Angeles Angels to settle at a 14-12 record. While that's still a game better than they were in 2012, the A's have to be a bit disconcerted at their level of play in the last two weeks.

While injuries have had something to do that that, notably to Yoenis Cespedes, that has not been the biggest problem. Quite simply, some players have not delivered. And going forward, there are three in particular who must make adjustments in order to help contribute to the A's winning as May approaches.

Hormone Levels And Sexual Motivation Among Young Women

Feeling frisky? If so, chances are greater your estrogen level - and, perhaps, fertility - are hitting their monthly peak. If not, you're more likely experiencing a profusion of desire-deadening progesterone, and the less fertile time in your cycle. Oh, the power of hormones. Researchers have long suspected a correlation between hormone levels and libido, but now scientists at UC Santa Barbara, led by James Roney, a professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, have actually demonstrated hormonal predictors for sexual desire...

The Care and Feeding of Warriors: Future Wishlist

The Care and Feeding of Warriors Future Wishlist SatSun
Every week, WoW Insider brings you The Care and Feeding of Warriors, the column dedicated to arms, fury and protection warriors. Despite repeated blows to the head from dragons, demons, Old Gods and whatever that thing over there was, Matthew Rossi will be your host.

So this week we had the big Dev Q&A, and there were some things in there that got me thinking.

From the Q&A
Dread: Why do Warriors (Arms & Fury) still have moves that require Shields, and thus, macros? You think a master of arms or a raging berserker could hit a fire ball back like a baseball. (Link could do it!)

Ghostcrawler: Shields are cool. We'd like to do more with them, for paladins and shaman too. We agree that macros aren't an awesome way to handle shields. We'd rather do more with the base UI. Imagine you had a shield slot on your character pane even if you didn't have it "out" at the moment. Something along those lines.

The specific moves that require a shield for arms and fury warriors are abilities like Shield Wall and Spell Reflection. (Mass Spell Reflection does not require a shield.) The idea of a 'Shield Slot' rather than using shields as offhand items fascinates me, especially if it led to the possibility of protection warriors using a two-handed weapon and a shield to tank with (as many have asked for, since the old spear and shield was a big part of historical warfare).

This led me to wonder: what would my dream additions be to the warrior class? What do I want to see make it into the class' toolkit for the future?

Potential New Way To Detect Colorectal And Other Cancers

A unique new study led by University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center researchers Guo-Min Li and Libya Gu, in collaboration with Dr. Wei Yang at National Institutes of Health, reveals a novel mechanism explaining the previously unknown root cause of some forms of colorectal cancers. Daily iPad App: Quicklytics is the Analytics client that Google should have made

If you obsess over your website traffic and bemoan the fact that Google doesn't have a decent iOS Analytics client, then you should take a moment to check out Quicklytics. Quicklytics pulls your Google Analytics data and gives you a detailed look at your almost realtime** website traffic in just a few taps.

The iPad version of the app has an attractive, split-pane layout that places the most commonly checked statistics at the top of the screen in portrait view or on the left in landscape. This section includes a graph and six smaller panes that show metrics like pageviews, visits, goals value and more. Tapping on the pane changes the graph, which now shows the data for the metric you just selected. Tap and hold on one of these panes, and you can change the metric. It's an intuitive layout that packs a lot of information into a relatively compact space.

The other section of Quicklytics contains the bulk of your metrics. You can view your audience information, sources of your traffic, content information and ad conversions. Each one of these sections has between 10 and 30 variables that you can pour over. Quicklytics also supports multiple Google analytics accounts, and you can easily switch between each one with a swipe to the left or to the right. It's a staggering amount of data that you can carry around with you in your bag.

There are several smaller features that make Quicklytics useful for anyone who is involved in running a website. With a single tap, you can compile a report and share the metrics for a variable like visit duration, device information and others. There is support for filters so you can curb the firehose of data when you need to look at the little picture instead of the big one. A series of tabs let you view your traffic data for today, yesterday, the month, or a custom time frame.

Quicklytics is available in the iOS App Store for US$1.99, down from the regular $4.99. This sale price is available through Friday.

**How quickly you will see your data change is dependent on your site's traffic. Smaller sites, like the ones I tested with, will see changes hit the app faster, while larger sites may take longer to update. In general, the developer says most sites will see traffic updates every 5-10 minutes.

Official: Audi testing long-tail version of R18 e-tron quattro for Le Mans

Race teams are always looking for ways to shave hundredths of seconds of their lap times. Case in point: Audi is making some slight changes to its prototype racecar to make it ever so much more slippery as it cuts through the air.

Debuting at the second round of the FIA World Endurance Championship at Spa on May 4, Audi will be testing a long-tail version of its R18 E-tron Quattro racecar. As its name suggests, the long-tail car gets a lengthened rear section with the goal of improving aerodynamics. The long-tail will be run alongside the standard version of the racecar as a testbed for possible changes that might be in store, heading into the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Audi did not say how many inches were added to the racecar, but as you can see in the image above, "long-tail" definitely doesn't take on the same meaning of classic long-tail cars of the past such as the Porsche 917. More information about the car, Audi's team and even some info about the track itself can be found below.

Around Azeroth Her face is forever etched in my memory SATURDAY
"After deciding to take a little break from dailies and LFR, I decided to go about the world pet battling," writes submitter Enishi of Prophecy on Wyrmrest Accord (US-A). "My travels brought me to Felwood to fight the Master Pet Tamer Zoltan, who apparently thinks pet battles are the key to bringing Sargeras into Azeroth. Once I won the battle, possibly saving Azeroth from Sargeras's wrath, I turned and took closer notice of the Zoltanian Cultists gathered around said Zoltan. Now, some have said that the blood elves are a beautiful people, and who am I to argue? But apparently joining Zoltan's cult seems to have an adverse effect on female blood elves -- the ones kneeling before him are wearing Forsaken skin!"

ED: Immediate Factors Individual Lack of Arousal

One of the most overlooked causes of ED is the lack of mental sexual arousal on the part of the patient. Often the patient himselfmay not be aware of this. Men often expect that they will experience an automatic erection when in a sexual situation and may be alarmed when it does not happen. Simply [...]

NBA Mailbag: 4 Burning Questions Surrounding Los Angeles Lakers This Summer

With a Shakespearean tragedy of an NBA season now mercifully behind them, so much uncertainty follows the Los Angeles Lakers this summer that one can only wonder if the worst is, in fact, over. Yet, of the several questions that will be hotly debated, here are the four most noteworthy.

Between injuries, age, free agency, the luxury tax and the pending 2014 LeBron James summer sweepstakes, who is the most important piece to the Los Angeles Lakers moving forward?

The answer is Kobe Bryant. Despite tearing his ACL at the tender age of 34, few doubt he will eventually return, but questions of how soon and at what cost will continue to fuel speculation that the organization may legitimately entertain amnestying him. Know why they won't though? Allow me to defer to the good and holy book of common sense, which states in chapter four, verse nine:

Let not thou head be as thick as the statue of which thou shalt build to immortalize an individual, and lest it be tarnished by the sin of amnesty, for which an unspeakable revolt would ensue because thou is a blithering idiot.

Funny as it may sound, the only guaranteed return that Lakers fans can hold onto at this point is of the same guy who is currently battling a career-ending injury and is due upwards of $30 million next season. By the way, that's why they call him the black mamba.

What will Dwight Howard's future hold with Los Angeles?

In a perfect world, the Lakers would use him as the principle guy in a sign-and-trade deal to get another superstar who is actually worthy of having the torch passed to him from Kobe. Perhaps someone like Chris Paul, for instance.

In reality though, and despite all the devastation and heartache that Dwight has had to "deal" with all season long, he'd be crazy to leave LA. They can offer him the most money, the most tradition, the most celebrity, the brightest spotlight and, to be quite frank, just as much of a shot as winning in the juggernaut Western Conference as any of the teams that will be throwing money at him can.

The cold hard truth is that Dwight really can't do as much for the Lakers as they can do for him. Try as he might, he will never be as dominant as Shaq, as competitive as Kobe or as charismatically cutthroat as Magic. At the end of the day, the best thing Dwight has going for him is that he is the easiest big fish the team can catch at this point.

What should the Lakers do with Mike D'Antoni

Replace him in favor of Phil Jackson, or Phil's understudy, Brian Shaw.

Mike D'Antoni may be an offensive genius, but he butted heads with Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol recurrently, and his willingness to play Kobe such heavy minutes undoubtedly led to his ACL injury.

But the real red flag here is that too many "coincidences" tend to happen around him. For instance, both Jeremy Lin and Kobe suffered season-ending injuries under his helm after playing heavy minutes for their respective teams.

Or what about the fact that the Los Angeles Lakers dropped from being a three seed in last year's playoffs to a seventh seed this year, while the New York Knicks jumped from No. 7 to No. 2 in that same span? The common denominator: Mike D'Antoni

Another interesting note, courtesy of Bill Simmons:

What should the Lakers do about Steve Nash and Pau Gasol?

Based on Gasol's impressive and inspired play in Kobe's absence (which is partially a testament to Mike D'Antoni finally learning how to use him) and the fact that his huge contract will expire right before the summer of LeBron, he likely isn't going anywhere.

Steve Nash is another story. Unlike Howard, Nash was a consummate professional from start to finish this year, but it appeared as though his age finally caught up to him, nagging injuries and all.

At this stage of his career, he seems best suited to be a backup. He came to LA to compete for a championship, but because of what happened to Kobe, the Lakers are clearly in a transitional period.

As the only player under contract past 2014 and due a little over $9 million next year, it would only seem logical that the Lakers explore either amnestying or trading him, assuming he doesn't preemptively decide to retire.

Clenching Your Fist Can Improve Your Memory

Clenching your right hand may help create a stronger memory of an event or action, and clenching your left hand may help you recall the memory later, according to a new study. The research was conducted by a team of experts from Montclair State University, led by Ruth Propper, and was published in the journal PLOS ONE. A previous study from UCLA demonstrated that stimulating key areas of the brain can improve memory. The authors of the current report pointed out that "Unilateral hand clenching increases neuronal activity in the frontal lobe of the contralateral hemisphere...

Millions of Americans Still Without Adequate Insurance Survey Shows

In 2012, close to 84 million people - half of all working-age U.S. adults did not have health insurance at one point, or had extra out-of-pocket expenses that were so high relative to their pay, they were actually considered underinsured, according to the Commonwealth Fund 2012 Biennial Health Insurance Survey. The survey also revealed that the sample of young adults aged 19-25 who were uninsured during the year dropped from 48% to 41% between 2010 and 2012 - reversing a trend of climbing uninsured rates in that age group...

Report: Japanese government chides Mitsubishi over recall delays

An official with the transport ministry in Japan has some stern words for Mitsubishi, taking the carmaker to task for not being more proactive and honest about its recalls. An investigation into The Tri-Star last December found Mitsubishi was tardy investigating problems and didn't explain itself forthrightly to the transport ministry about the issues. None of Mitsubishi's actions were illegal, and we should stress that this is a dialogue with Mitsubishi in Japan, not Mitsubishi Motors North America.

The official advised the automaker to, "Come up with plans for improvement, implement them and report them to the ministry." It looks like the company will get more practice than it wants in that department, having to announce another recall for the Outlander PHEV over software and hardware glitches. Those recalls come just after Mitsu finally figured out the problem with overheating lithium-ion batteries that caused a production halt of the plug-in hybrid SUV.

The Only Goal You Need to See This Weekend

Everyone loves a good bicycle-kick goal. Kennedy Igboananike scored a great one this weekend.

Igboananike, a 24-year-old Nigerian striker, netted an impressive goal with an overhead kick as AIK Solna drew 3-3 with Halmstad in the Swedish Allsvenskan. The goal came in the 74th minute and gave AIK a 3-2 lead until Johan Blomberg equalized for Halmstad in the 90th minute.

With a cross coming from the right, just outside the box, Igboananike positioned himself away from a defender and timed his jump perfectly before powering an overhead volley into the net past a stunned keeper at the near post.

Most of the time you see an overhead kick, even one that results in a goal, you don't see the player make solid contact with the ball. That's not the case here. Igboananike thumped the ball, and the keeper had no chance to save.

The goal appears in GIF form below. It's our Set Piece Goal of the Weekend. Enjoy.

For a video version of the goal, click here.

Igboananike signed with AIK from rivals Djurgården IF as a free agent in November. ''Kennedy has soccer qualities that give us more offensive options," AIK sports director Jens T. Andersson told the club's official website at the time (via AllNigeriaSoccer.com). The Nigerian forward scored his debut goal last week, but we're thinking this bicycle kick was probably closer to what Andersson was talking about.

Through six matches in the 16-team Allsvenkan table, AIK are 11th with six points. Halmstad are 15th with four.

What was your goal of the weekend? Let us know in the comments below.

Children Who Eat Same Food As Parents Eat Healthiest, Study Shows

Young children who eat the same meals as their parents are far more likely to have healthier diets than those who eat different foods, according to research. Children who rarely or never eat the same food as their parents had the poorest diets, compared with children who do. A University of Edinburgh researcher looked at different aspects of family meals of more than 2000 five year olds, drawing upon data from the Growing Up In Scotland study. Whether children ate the same food as their parents or not had the biggest impact on children's diets...

Around Azeroth: Down on Old Man Lovecraft's farm

Around Azeroth Down on Old Man Lovecraft's farm THURSDAY
"They said it couldn't be done, but after numerous failed attempts I finally solved the Puzzle Box of Yogg-Saron," writes submitter Zlomort of Avoiding Reality on Hydraxis (US-H). "I sat on my farm diligently working away at it until things just seemed to fall into place. The sides slid in ways they never had before, my fingers tracing every line of its delicately etched surface. It almost seemed like the box was using me to solve itself. It didn't open, though. There wasn't something locked inside of it; there was something locked outside of it! I think it likes its new home, warm and safe under my farm. People come to visit it all the time, but I never see them leave. Maybe you'd like to visit us sometime?"

Spy Shots: Rolls-Royce Ghost getting a nip and tuck

While there isn't too much competition in the "vehicles priced more than houses" market, automakers still have to keep their products fresh, and it looks like the Rolls-Royce Ghost could be getting a slight facelift for 2014. Like the rest of the Ghost, these spy shots show that Rolls-Royce even makes exquisite body camouflage as it takes a close look to really see that any material has been added to the face.

From what we can tell, though, it looks like the Ghost might be getting a nip/tuck to the front end. This will bring its appearance closer to what we saw on the Rolls-Royce Wraith - the coupe version of the Ghost that debuted back in March at the Geneva show - reshaped headlights that feature LED running lights and also what appear to be LED turn signals. More minor changes to the Ghost include restyled door mirrors that might get some aero tweaks, as well as a smooth rear fascia devoid of visible exhaust outlets.

What we don't know is whether the Ghost will also be getting the more powerful version of the V12 found in the Wraith that produces 624 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, versus the current Ghost's 563 hp and 575 lb-ft.

Consolidated Health Economic Evaluation Reporting Standards (CHEERS) statement

Economic evaluations of health interventions pose a particular challenge for reporting. There is also a need to consolidate and update existing guidelines and promote their use in a user friendly manner. The Consolidated Health Economic Evaluation Reporting Standards (CHEERS) statement is an attempt to consolidate and update previous health economic evaluation guidelines efforts into one current, useful reporting guidance. The primary audiences for the CHEERS statement are researchers reporting economic evaluations and the editors and peer reviewers assessing them for publication. The need for new reporting guidance was identified by a survey of medical editors. A list of possible items based on a systematic review was created. A two round, modified Delphi panel consisting of representatives from academia, clinical practice, industry, government, and the editorial community was conducted. Out of 44 candidate items, 24 items and accompanying recommendations were developed. The recommendations are contained in a user friendly, 24 item checklist. A copy of the statement, accompanying checklist, and this report can be found on the ISPOR Health Economic Evaluations Publication Guidelines Task Force website (http://www.ispor.org/TaskForces/EconomicPubGuidelines.asp).We hope CHEERS will lead to better reporting, and ultimately, better health decisions. To facilitate dissemination and uptake, the CHEERS statement is being co-published across 10 health economics and medical journals. We encourage other journals and groups, to endorse CHEERS. The author team plans to review the checklist for an update in five years.
