When The Shield finally makes it to WWE’s pinnacle, Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns can look back on their time in jolly old England and thank a fellow Yank for giving them a major “over.”
We’re not just talking about your run-of-the-mill WWE Superstar, either. We are talking about The Undertaker.
These three must have made an impression on the Deadman with their previous ring work against some of the best WWE has to offer. Otherwise, he would have gone back into his usual post-WrestleMania hibernation and stayed there until next year in New Orleans.
But not this time. Undertaker has seen more ring action in the past 14 or so days than he normally sees in a whole year. And The Shield was a major reason why.
Two weeks ago, he made his annual appearance at WrestleMania 29 and kept his unbeaten streak alive. In a later appearance on Raw, he found himself surrounded by The Shield before being joined by Team Hell No in an apparent promo for their six-man match this week in London. It would be rare TV ring action for Undertaker.
While the team was not successful in beating back the Hounds of Justice Monday night, it was not Undertaker’s fault. He moved around the ring and took on some moves that seemed to defy his oft-battered body, even taking the action outside the ring.
He wrestled like he was 20 years younger. And it showed in the pop he received from the crowd.
If the Raw match was not enough, Undertaker wound up wrestling on consecutive nights for the first time in what seems like forever, and his opponent Tuesday night was a Shield member. According to SEScoops.com, (POTENTIAL SPOILER ALERT) he faced off against Ambrose in the last match—and beat him with the Hell’s Gate submission move.
According to the report, following the match, the other Shield members jumped into the ring and began beating on Undertaker. Eventually, he was saved by three other WWE veterans in Triple H and the New Age Outlaws.
Granted, the circumstances were special. WWE was in London winding up its European tour, and the company apparently was a little short in star power thanks to CM Punk’s time off.
But The Undertaker? The broken-down, beaten-down, two-years-shy-of-50 Undertaker?
The Shield members must have something special going for them to draw the attention of perhaps WWE’s greatest Superstar ever. Otherwise, why would he forgo any portion of his usual ring vacation time in order to come on television and give three young stars the kind of push that only someone of his stature could?
Getting in the ring with Undertaker had to feel like a graduate-level course in pro wrestling for Ambrose, Rollins and Reigns. They could not have gotten a bigger push if someone had taken an English double-decker bus and shoved them around the O2 Arena.
Talk about Christmas coming early for The Shield.
If The Shield seemed like world beaters before London, then the group has to really feel unstoppable now. And the fans of the United States have to be a little envious of their British fan brethren for bearing personal witness to such a special moment as Undertaker vs.Ambrose. There is a question as to whether or not this would be televised. SEScoops.com called it a dark match, but WrestlingInc.com reports that the announcers were still at ringside for the contest.
Either way, maybe we should consider it another form of payback to England for that little difference of opinion between our countries back in 1776.
