5 Players Worth Dropping from Fantasy Rosters After Week 4

We've made it four weeks into the 2013 fantasy football campaign, and already some disappointing trends have emerged.

Fantasy owners who dropped a top-five pick on Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Doug Martin have been left holding the bag, with no indication that's going to change.

The same goes for wide receivers Danny Amendola of the New England Patriots and Roddy White of the Atlanta Falcons.

One injured star can't get on the field. The other isn't doing anything while he's on it.

For some players, the outlook is even bleaker. With the bye weeks in full swing, roster spots have become much more valuable. They can't be wasted on dead weight.

Unfortunately, that's what these players are, and it's time to cut them loose.

Breakfast Topic: What's so great about leveling?

Breakfast Topic What's so fun about leveling
Look at you, all of you gathered here, noses against the glass -- compulsive levelers, peering in at WoW Insider during a momentary break from your pursuit of XP. Oh, we know, you're only working on two alts "actively," right? Well, except for the lowbie you play with your significant other. And the one you're leveling with your buddy from work.

Okay, so we're not implying you've secretly hit the 50-character-per-account cap yet. And true, you're probably not valor-capping an entire realm's worth of 90s every single week. We'll grant that leveling a character in WoW today is no Ironman Challenge.

But make no mistake, levelers, we know you're out there. We see you sneaking about in your 30s and 40s and 50s, far removed from the neon attractions of the endgame, skulking through Maraudon and Dire Maul. It's time to confess: What is it about leveling another character that you find so appealing? Are you chasing a specific character mix or roster, exploring different storylines and factions, experimenting with alterate specs and builds? Spill the motivations behind your leveling mania.

Apple to pay $40 to iPad 3G owners in class action settlement

Apple to pay $40 to iPad 3G owners in class action settlement

Gigaom is reporting that Apple and AT&T have reached a settlement agreement as it pertains to a class action lawsuit relating to AT&T's now-defunct unlimited data plan for the iPad 3G.

The lawsuit was originally filed back in June of 2010 and accused both Apple and AT&T of touting unlimited data on the iPad 3G model upon launch, only to have AT&T do away with unlimited data a few months after the iPad was released. The lawsuit claimed that affected users were victims of a "bait and switch" maneuver.

Now, a tad more than three years later, a settlement has been reached that will see Apple pay out US$40 to every individual who purchased an iPad 3G model before June 7, 2010. Further, individuals who purchased an iPad 3G model, but didn't sign up for a data plan will be eligible for a $20/month discount (for 12 months in duration) on AT&T's 5GB monthly plan.

The ruling will be finalized in February so eligible iPad owners will have to wait a few more months for their payout.

A copy of the order can be viewed in its entirety below.

Surgeon Simulator may hack away on iPad in 2014

Developers of the surprise hit Surgeon Simulator 2013 are currently working on a tablet version that could see release in 2014, Joystiq reports. The game -- which gives players the chance to operate on patients using intentionally sketchy controls -- became an overnight hit in 2013 and eventually found its way to Steam via the Greenlight program.

It's unclear at this time whether a tablet iteration would simply attempt to replicate the existing procedures offered by the Steam version, or if new surgeries would be included -- tooth pulling, for example. Joystiq's Sinan Kubba saw a version of the game running on an iPad firsthand, but it's still a toss-up whether tablet gamers will actually get a chance to play it. If developer Bossa Studios decides to move forward, the game will likely see release sometime in 2014.

Motorsports: Alpine wins European Le Mans Series in first season back

It's been a long time since we've seen an Alpine roaring on either road or track, but this year Renault is bringing back the once vaunted marque in a big way. It's got a new sports car under development together with Caterham, but to drum up some enthusiasm and rekindle the spirit of the Alpine win at Le Mans in 1978, Renault relaunched the Alpine racing team in European endurance racing this season. And after an absence of 35 years, the Alpine team has prevailed once again.

Out of just five races, the Signatech Alpine team scored three podium finishes, including outright victory in Hungary two weeks ago. After finishing in fourth place at Paul Ricard this weekend, the Alpine duo of Pierre Ragues and Nelson Panciatici emerged the dominant force in the 2013 European Le Mans Series.

They scored both the drivers' and teams' titles in the LMP2 category that forms the top tier in the ELMS championship (LMP1 teams compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship), while Team Endurance Challenge took the LMPC title, RAM Racing won in LMGTE and SMP Racing dominated the GTC standings.

With the 2013 titles under its belt, Alpine is already looking forward to next year, when it hopes to field two cars at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Scroll down below for the official press release.

Sunday Morning Funnies: The unicorn

Sunday Morning Funnies The unicorn SUN
Sunday Morning Funnies is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics.

This week, chapter 3 of Fox Rain has begun! The cover and the first page are up already.

I also want to do a (belated) Happy Birthday to Lackinganame, of Gratz, who celebrated a birthday this week. I hope it was awesome!

Anyone interested in a custom BlizzCon badge? Because you can still order one from Vid of From Draenor With Love until tomorrow, September 30. They're hand painted and really cool. The paintings are separate, and would probably be a fun commission even if you aren't going to BlizzCon. For $40, you get the name tag and badge holder and shipping. Apparently, no warriors, warlocks or priests have commissioned any yet! There are some pretty fantastic samples up on the Manalicious blog.

As always, we're taking submissions! Drop a link into the comments section if you know of a comic that you'd like to see featured here.

Invest in adolescents and young people: it pays

This year's Women Deliver conference made a strong call for investing in the health and development of adolescents and young people. It highlighted the unique problems faced by adolescent girls and young women--some of the most vulnerable and neglected individuals in the world--and stressed the importance of addressing their needs and rights, not only for their individual benefit, but also to achieve global goals such as reducing maternal mortality and HIV infection. In response to an invitation from the editors of Reproductive Health, we-the sixteen coauthors of this commentary--put together key themes that reverberated throughout the conference, on the health and development needs of adolescents and young people, and promising solutions to meet them.1.Investing in adolescents and young people is crucial for ensuring health, creating prosperity and fulfilling human rights.2.Gender inequality contributes to many health and social problems. Adolescent girls and boys, and their families and communities, should be challenged and supported to change inequitable gender norms.Child marriage utterly disempowers girls. It is one of the most devastating manifestations of gender discrimination.Negative social and cultural attitudes towards menstruation constrain the lives of millions of girls. This may well establish the foundation for lifelong discomfort felt by girls about their bodies and reticence in seeking help when problems arise.3.Adolescents need comprehensive, accurate and developmentally appropriate sexuality education. This will provide the bedrock for attitude formation and decision making.4.Adolescent-centered health services can prevent sexual and reproductive health problems and detect and treat them if and when they occur.5.National governments have the authority and the responsibility to address social and cultural barriers to the provision of sexual and reproductive health education and services for adolescents and young people.6.Adolescents should be involved more meaningfully in national and local actions intended to meet their needs and respond to their problems.7.The time to act is now. We know more now than ever before about the health and development needs of adolescents and young people, as well as the solutions to meeting those needs.

Darren McFadden Injury: Latest News and Fantasy Outlook for Raiders Starting RB

Darren McFadden of the Oakland Raiders is one of the most gifted running backs in the NFL, but his latest hamstring injury proves once again that he cannot be trusted as a consistent starter in fantasy football.

McFadden's talent is undeniable. He's big, explosive and has great balance. He demonstrated his prodigious talent in 2010, when he racked up 1,664 total yards and 10 touchdowns in just 13 games.

Unfortunately for McFadden, his career is plagued by phrases like "just 13 games."

McFadden has missed at least three games every season he has been in the league, and after leaving Sunday's game with a hamstring injury, it appears to be deja vu all over again for the former Arkansas Razorback.

McFadden carried the ball five times for 29 yards in Week 4, but he appeared to strain his hamstring in the first half. Although his return was initially ruled as "questionable," he emerged from the locker room at halftime in street clothes.

The extent of his injury is unknown, but McFadden's fantasy owners should start to look elsewhere for production. The veteran back is simply too unreliable, and he will continue to hurt fantasy owners looking for consistency in the backfield.

It's still too early to cut your losses with McFadden, because his ceiling is higher than almost every other back in the league, and he likely won't net much of a return on the trade market at this point.

However, McFadden's injury issues should earn him a spot on your bench for at least the next few weeks.

The fibrotic microenvironment as a heterogeneity facet of hepatocellular carcinoma

It has long been recognized that hepatocellular carcinoma heterogeneity arises from variation in the microenvironment or from genomic alteration. Only recently it has become clear that non-genetic alterations, such as cytoskeletal rearrangement, protein localization and formation of protein complexes, are also involved in generating phenotype variability. These proteome fluctuations cause genetically identical cells to vary significantly in their responsiveness to microenvironment stimuli. In the cirrhotic liver pre-malignant hepatocytes are continuously exposed to abnormal microenvironments, such as direct contact with activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) and extracellular matrix components. These abnormal environments can have pronounced influences on the epigenetic aspects of cells, translating into abnormal phenotypes. Here we discuss non-genetic causes of phenotypic heterogeneity of hepatocellular carcinoma, with an emphasis on variability of membrane protein complexes and transferred functions raising important implications for diagnosis and treatment.

Lane Kiffin Fired: USC Crushed Under the Weight of Expectations

Sept. 28, 2013, goes down as the date Lane Kiffin's fate as USC's head football coach was sealed. The Trojans' 62-41 loss at Arizona State brought to a crescendo a ballad that began Nov. 19, 2011.

That date marked the apex of the Kiffin era, a 38-35 defeat of two-time defending conference champion Oregon. The Ducks went on to win a third straight Pac-12 title that season.

However, the win in Autzen Stadium seemed to send a resounding message—Oregon may have held the crown while USC was down, but the Ducks were merely keeping it warm for the Trojans' return.

For the pundits and pollsters who voted USC No. 1 atop the preseason Associated Press Top 25, it came through loud enough to silence what should have been otherwise glaring deficiencies.

Though the 2011 season was the end of the bowl ban, the true impact of NCAA sanctions was just beginning. And, in many ways, that 2011 team was the last of the pre-sanction Trojans, in that numerous key contributors were recruited and developed prior to the NCAA lowering its heavy hand on Heritage Hall.

Players like Chris Galippo, DaJohn Harris and Nick Perry left tremendous voids on the defense. Between the three, USC was losing 23.5 tackles for loss alone.

Of course, all attention before the 2012 campaign was focused on an offense returning a dynamic receiving duo of Robert Woods and Marqise Lee, as well as 1,000-yard rusher Curtis McNeal.

And that's to say nothing of the return of the most recognized player at the most recognized position.

Beating Oregon was not in and of itself reason enough to declare USC back as a national powerhouse. For many, that moment came a month later when quarterback Matt Barkley announced he would eschew the NFL draft for a year to take care of his "unfinished business."

Barkley was outstanding his junior season and arguably deserved a spot among the Heisman Trophy finalists. However, there was one very big reason to suggest he might take a step back—a 6'7", 308-pound reason.

Of all the departures from the 2011 Trojans, none was more critical than that of tackle Matt Kalil. Barkley without Kalil felt a bit like John Stockton without Karl Malone.

With him anchoring the line, USC allowed just eight sacks all season. Without him, that number more than doubled to 17. This year through five games, it's up to 13.

Offensive line play has been the most vexing issue for USC amid its 3-2 start. Developing a new quarterback is a tall order when he is under constant duress, and that's been the case for Cody Kessler

Too much stock was put into Barkley's return last season, and likewise, too much has been invested in placing the blame of this year's struggles on his successor.

Neither Kessler nor Max Wittek is 2011 or even 2012 Matt Barkley. Since taking over the job exclusively in Week 3, Kessler has looked more like 2009 Barkley—which makes sense, considering that was Barkley's first year of college football competition much as this season is Kessler's of any meaningful game action.

Kessler has progressed each week, including in Saturday's 20-of-29, two-touchdown and career-high 295-yard performance. He should continue to get better with more experience.

Unfortunately for Kessler and his USC teammates, they are bearing the burden of their predecessors' disappointments.

The expectations that started with that win in Autzen and carried over into the summer of 2012 set an unrealistically high bar for a program just beginning the arduous march through historically significant sanctions.

Programs face an uphill climb when rebuilding from sanctions, regardless of brand name.

Alabama suffered sanction-induced growing pains during the mid-2000s that carried over into the first year of the Nick Saban era.

The penalties handed down to Auburn in the mid-1990s were the most severe since SMU's death penalty, and the harshest prior those given to USC. The Trojans' 10-2 season is reminiscent of Auburn's 11-0 finish its first year serving a bowl ban, but the Tigers came out of the era with a couple 8-4 finishes, a 10-3 burst, then a 3-8 flameout

Despite its struggles, USC has not trended in the same direction of a sub-.500 bottoming-out before beginning its return to the upper echelon. However, the school announced it was firing Kiffin early Sunday morning, according to CBS Sports.

Maybe had Oregon finished its game-ending drive 22 months ago to complete the rally and beat USC, the sky-high bar set for 2012 would have been lowered a bit closer to Earth and a 7-6 finish would not have been dire straits.

Conversely, the natives may have grown restless sooner with four straight seasons falling short of the double-digit win barrier, which 2012 would have marked.

Neither theory can be definitively be proven. Far more certain is that, even amid turmoil, USC has high expectations and in the eyes of many, Kiffin failed to meet them—save that November night in Eugene, Ore.

Study: Europe's most-wanted classic car is... the Ford Mustang?

1964 Ford Mustang

Over the span of its 49 years and five generations, the Ford Mustang has held a special place in the hearts of automotive enthusiasts in the US, but, as it turns out, this car is also very popular amongst European car lovers. Earlier this summer, AutoScout24 - a new and used car shopping site in Europe - polled around 75,000 European "car lovers" (not sure how they vetted the respondents) to see which cars were the most popular, and the Mustang came out on top over iconic European classics like the BMW M1 and Volkswagen Beetle.

In the whole of Europe, 37 percent of those polled dream of owning a Mustang, but that number jumps in individual countries like Austria (42 percent) and Spain (41 percent). Rounding out the top five popular classics in Europe are the Mini and Citroën 2CV. Find out which cars made up the rest of the top 10 in the press release posted below.

Official: Nissan's current Rogue renamed Rogue Select, will live alongside next gen

2013 Nissan Rogue - front three-quarter view

Despite the fact that an all-new generation of its Rogue crossover goes on sale in November, Nissan will continue to sell the current model alongside its replacement. The existing C-platform-based Rogue, which will be renamed Rogue Select, will start at less than $20,000 when it goes on sale in January 2014. At present, a base 2013 Rogue S prices out slightly higher, from $20,310, but we wouldn't be surprised to see the 2014 Rogue Select come to market with more standard equipment and simplified trim options. It will continue to be built in Kyushu, Japan.

According to Nissan, the unusual move is "to satisfy demand for the popular compact sports utility vehicle, currently second-highest seller in Nissan's lineup, as well as provide customers an additional choice in the segment." It's hard to hard to argue with the numbers: Nissan cites 2012 calendar-year sales of 142,349 Rogue units in the US, with 2013 sales increasing 16 percent through August despite the vehicle's age.

The strategy may also give Nissan the chance to ask for more money for the second-generation model (which is based on a new Common Module Family platform shared with partner Renault) while keeping it clear of residual-value-damaging fleet sales. The new Rogue looks to be both larger and more luxurious, with an available third-row seat, and it should be more economical to produce, as it will be built in Nissan's Smyrna, TN plant.

If this decision to continue to sell an existing model while simultaneously selling its successor sounds like a familiar strategy, that's probably because we recently reported that Nissan's luxury marque, Infiniti, made a similar decision, announcing it would continue to sell the current G37 sedan alongside its replacement, the 2014 Infiniti Q50. Read Nissan's press release below for more details on this latest sales move and let us know what you think about this move in Comments.

To help fight these pathogens, scientists are working on vaccines that can establish a front line of defense at mucosal surfaces. Vaccines can be delivered to the lungs via an aerosol spray, but the lungs often clear away the vaccine before it can provoke an immune response...

Fantasy Premier League 2013 Week 6: Players You Must Give Starting Spots

Spent all of Friday sneaking a look at your Premier League fantasy team in work? Still unsure on what changes to make at this late juncture? This fantasy football lark can’t half be a nightmare at times.

Well, we’ll do our best to help you out. Having trawled the respective rosters, prices, fixtures and form, we’ve picked out some of best value players you should include ahead of this weekend.

And YES, there is still time to make your transfers, as the deadline closes at 11:30 a.m. GMT.

So hurry, hurry. Shift out some crocked stars such as Christian Benteke, Daniel Agger and Sergio Aguero and get in some players bound to make an impression in week six.

And if you have a little cash left over, then you can afford yourself a some luxury ahead of the next round of fixtures.

Romelu Lukaku—£7.5 million

If any of the aforementioned strikers remain in your squad, then I would strongly advise you to shift them out immediately and get Lukaku in.

The on-loan Chelsea man transformed a ponderous Everton outfit into a side that looked the business following his introduction at half time against West Ham.

His eye for goal was obvious, as he found himself in some fine positions before eventually powering home the winner; he actually managed to get himself knocked out in the process—I know, I know. I didn’t think it was possible either!

With Nikica Jelavic and Arouna Kone not cutting the mustard, Lukaku looks certain to lead the Everton line on Monday evening. Plus, he’ll be going up against a Newcastle defence that conceded three times against Hull City in their last league outing

So shift out Benteke or Aguero, draft the Belgian in and have a bit left over for next week.

Luke Shaw—£4.7 million

The secret is out the bag when it comes to the young Southampton full-back. He’s now well regarded as one of the best young talents in England and speculation regarding a move to one of the more illustrious English sides has started to surface.

Even so, Shaw remains value at £4.7 million in the fantasy football stakes, especially when you consider that Southampton will be at home to Crystal Palace this weekend.

Palace have showcased little in terms of cutting edge and Mauricio Pochettino’s high-octane, intense, pressing style should see Southampton dominate the ball.

Shaw looks set to secure a clean sheet and if he puts in some of those trademark forays forward, then assists and goals are certainly not out of the question either.

Victor Moses - £6.3 million

With no Coutinho available, the on-loan Chelsea man looks set to make up a front three with Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez.

There were signs in Liverpool’s 1-0 League Cup defeat Manchester United that these three players could work together to great effect. Their movement in particular was a joy to watch and United had to resort regularly to some last-ditch defending in order to keep the Reds out.

They travel to Sunderland this week, a team who have had better weeks, it is fair to say. The club are rooted to the bottom of the Premier League and remain managerless after the sacking of Paolo Di Canio.

Liverpool and Moses should be looking to stamp their authority on the game at the Stadium of Light. Granted, a new face can often rejuvenate a toiling squad, but it can just as easily plunge a team even further into the mire.

Expect Liverpool to get back to winning ways in this one, with the pace, power and finishing ability of Moses central to victory.

VLC for Mac gets 4K support, dozens of new features

The VideoLan Organization has released a major update to the VLC media player for OS X. VLC 2.1 adds a number of significant updates to the popular open-source media player. For starters, VLC now supports "Ultra HD video," otherwise known as 4K. That means VLC is now capable of outputting video that is over twice the resolution of Blu-ray. This, of course, requires you to have video files of 4K quality.

In addition to 4K support, VLC 2.1 now also offers OpenGL ES, which will make outputting video to iOS and Android devices much easier. The update has also added support for more than a dozen other video codecs. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. VLC 2.1 offers dozens more new features in all areas including audio, formats, inputs, mobile and for developers. On top of all the new features, more than 1,000 bugs were also fixed.

VLC 2.1 is a free download.

Apple named most innovative company in the world for 9th consecutive year

A recent survey of 1,500 senior executives conducted by The Boston Consulting Group has named Apple the most innovative company in the world nine years running.

The findings capture executives' views of their own innovation plans, as well as their opinions of other companies' innovation track records. As in past surveys, the 2013 results reveal the 50 companies that executives rank as the most innovative, weighted to incorporate relative three-year shareholder returns, revenue growth and margin growth.

It has been suggested that Apple has lost its innovative edge. Some would dismiss the iPhone 5s as it so closely resembles the iPhone 5. In truth, Apple always challenges itself to push the envelope. Apple CEO Tim Cook understands that to survive in tech means the constant pursuit of innovation. In a recent Businessweek profile on Apple's executive team, Cook pointed to Nokia as a reminder "to everyone in business that you have to keep innovating and that to not innovate is to die."

The pundits may not appreciate Apple's innovations, but senior executives from hundreds of companies across the globe sure seem to.

Ray Rice Too Risky to Play in Fantasy with Questionable Status

Ray Rice may be able to play against the Buffalo Bills this Sunday, but he's too big of a risk to start this week in fantasy football.

After not playing in Week 3 against the Houston Texans due to a hip injury, Rice has been working to get ready to play this week against the Bills, practicing on a limited basis throughout the week. According to the Baltimore Ravens official Twitter account, Rice believes there's a chance that he plays on Sunday.

Even if Rice has a chance to get in the game, he isn't worth the risk of putting him in your starting lineup.

We've seen situations like this a few times already this season regarding big fantasy names that were questionable entering their games, and most of them have been pretty disappointing when they've been out there.

Larry Fitzgerald was questionable to play in each of his last two games with a hamstring injury. He had just 33 yards on two catches against the Detroit Lions, then came back and had just 64 yards on five receptions the next week against the New Orleans Saints.

Roddy White has been hobbled over the past few weeks with an ankle sprain. He's been unable to put up solid numbers so far this year, grabbing just seven receptions for 56 yards and zero touchdowns. He tweeted out after the season opener against the Saints, telling fantasy owners why they shouldn't start him.

The same case could be made about being limited in practice.

Even when Rice has played this year, it hasn't been very impressive. He's ran for 72 yards and a touchdown in two games, but he's also averaged just 2.9 yards per carry and lost a fumble.

No matter which way you put it, that's not good.

The issue, even if Rice plays, is that he will be splitting carries with Bernard Pierce, perhaps even getting fewer carries than his backup, because they want to ease him back into game situations.

Unfortunately, even Pierce's numbers haven't been very good. He has 144 yards and two touchdowns on the year, averaging 2.8 yards per carry. He had 65 yards and a score on 24 carries last week, and the offense still looks rather weak.

Rice won't get anywhere near 24 carries this week if he's able to suit up and get out there. The Bills may not have the strongest defense, but the Ravens' offensive line seems incapable of opening up holes. At 2.6 yards per carry as a team, they rank 30th in the NFL, behind only the St. Louis Rams and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Hip injuries are no joke, and there's always the risk of re-injuring the hip when Rice is out there. If you're a fantasy owner, keep Rice out of your starting lineup this week and wait until the reports are much more optimistic about his participation in practice before you think about starting him once again.

MTA, AT&T declare winners of transit app contest

New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and AT&T announced the winners of the 2013 App Quest challenge this week. The challenge was designed to highlight the best mobile apps for the millions of MTA customers who tote up to an impressive 2.6 billion trips each year on the MTA's buses, subways and commuter rail trains.

Best Overall App went to the developers of Citymapper (free), which provides real-time information on subways, buses and even bicycle sharing in New York City and London. The developers won US$20,000 for the app, which not only provides transportation information but also local weather and information on shutdowns and service disruptions. It can even tell passengers when to get off a bus.

The MTA fought third-party apps initially, but in 2010, it decided to work with developers and started making information on scheduling, ridership and route performance freely available. The App Quest competition is in its second year -- last year's winning app, Embark (free), was acquired by Apple last month.

The Queue: Been a week, all right

Welcome back to The Queue, the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Matthew Rossi has had quite the week.

Yep. It's Thursday. Totally been a week. With days and everything. And to be honest, I'd be okay with it being over right about now. Here, have a video of my cat Sasquatch watching Star Trek TNG on the iPad. He's apparently not a fan. Special guest appearance by Puck, our middle cat, at the end.

rcmetzger asks:
Question: So there's a new rogue columnist right?

Follow-Up Question: If that's a yes, when will a new mage columnist be coming to theaters everywhere?

Yes, there's a new rogue columnist. Stay tuned to this site for news about other new columnists as well. I guarantee you'll be glad you did.

Yasiel Puig Dressed as Gumby and Hung out with Vin Scully Because Life Is Great

Yasiel Puig has been the hero, the goat and everything in between this season. On Thursday, he was Gumby

Busted Coverage happened upon some brilliant images coming from Puig's Instagram and the Los Angeles Dodgers' Twitter feed.

You see, it's the last week of the season, which means it's time for the vets from every team to dress up (or down) their rookies—something the Oakland Athletics seem to have won this season.

The Dodgers took time away from losing two out of three to the San Francisco Giants to make their rookies look ridiculous. As with everything this season, Puig stole the show with his Vin Scully-accompanied photo.

You remember Gumby, the plastic and pliable, um, thingy. Don't you?

But there is so much more.

Here is Scott Van Slyke rocking the sexy nurse outfit—a must for any Halloween party as well as the team bus.

Here is Hyun-Jin Ryu wearing the costume of the scariest thing that Ghostbuster Ray Stantz could think up.

And here is the whole gang looking like they were cast for the wacky train scene from Trading Places

Even the rookie-hazing portion of the season was great for Puig. He got to dress up in what looks to be a comfortable costume and once again remind himself that he knows the greatest broadcaster in the business.

Not bad for the vets trying to make you look silly. And it could be a lot worse; he could have been forced to wear a naked cowboy costume like the Giants did to their rookies.

Gumby is a fitting character for MLB's most electric rookie. On one night, Puig can look like he has no grasp of the game, running when he shouldn't and missing cutoff men by a mile. At other times, you are forced to make a brief and not-all-that-crazy connection to Roy Hobbs of The Natural

He is equal parts Vladimir Guerrero and Bo Jackson, swinging, hacking and making unbelievable plays. We have enough games to fit him into a mold, but none would contain him.

Gumby is as good a comparison as any we have seen this season, and he wears it rather well.

Common viral disease prevented in stem-cell transplant patients

A new drug can often prevent a common, sometimes severe viral disease in patients receiving a transplant of donated blood-making stem cells, a clinical trial led by researchers at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women's Hospital indicates. In a paper in the Sept. 26 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, the researchers report that patients who took the drug CMX001 shortly after transplant were far less likely to develop cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection than were patients who took a placebo...

Design and evaluation of a unique RT-qPCR assay for diagnostic quality control assessment that is applicable to pathogen detection in three species of salmonid fish

Background:
The detection of pathogens at early stages of infection is a key point for disease control in aquaculture. Therefore, accurate diagnostic procedures are a must. Real-time PCR has been a mainstay in diagnostics over the years due to its speed, specificity, sensitivity, reproducibility and throughput; as such, real-time PCR is a target for improvement. Nevertheless, to validate a novel diagnostic tool, correct setup of the assay, including proper endogenous controls to evaluate the quantity and quality of the samples and to detect possible sample degradation, is compulsory. This work aims to design a unique RT-qPCR assay for pathogen detection in the three salmonid species reared in Chile. The assay uses elongation factor 1 alpha as the single endogenous control, thus avoiding the need for multiple endogenous controls, as well as multiple validations and non-comparable quality control parameters.
Results:
The in vivo and in vitro analyses of samples from Salmo salar, Oncorhynchus mykiss and Oncorhynchus kisutch showed that when primers were accurately selected to target conserved regions of the elongation factor 1 alpha (ELF1alpha) gene, a single novel RT-qPCR assay yielding similar and reproducible Ct values between the three species could be designed. The opposite occurred when an assay originally designed for Salmo salar was tested in samples from the two species of the genus Oncorhynchus.
Conclusions:
Here, we report the design and evaluation of an accurate trans-species RT-qPCR assay that uses the elongation factor 1 alpha (ELF1alpha) gene as an endogenous control and is applicable for diagnostic purposes in samples obtained from the three salmonid species reared in Chile.

Fitness Plus WoW: Companies seek new ways to market to the gaming community

The worlds of fitness and gaming haven't always been thought of as a natural fit. But with gaming now solidly dug into the adult demographic, we can crunch contentedly on our Cheetos without fear of silly stereotypes. We're not shocked to be called in with an alt to fill in for the off tank, who's dialing back for a couple of weeks before running in his next 10K. We're not surprised to learn that a guildmate is a high school soccer player, a 45-year-old yoga teacher, or an active duty soldier who whips out beastly chin-up sets alongside beastly DPS.

Being a fit gamer may no longer be an eyebrow-raising novelty, but gamers haven't exactly become a prime target for fitness company marketing. Yet fitness and gaming have gone hand in hand so long for one WoW player that he's managed to nab a sponsorship from a fitness company anxious to tap into the gaming community. Bodybuilder and WoW player Bajheera of Darkspear (US) is pumped up at the prospect of connecting with his growing YouTube audience about not only gaming but fitness as well. "Merging fitness and gaming on the channel is natural for me," he explained to WoW Insider. "I am definitely encouraging gamers to get active and interested in fitness and am doing my best to encourage fitness-related companies like my sponsor Cellucor ... to reach out to gamers looking to incorporate fitness into their lives. So I am definitely interested in cross-promotion and have been making an effort to bring the fitness and gaming together."

Bajheera reports that the twist is building a surprisingly positive response. "[The company] is excited about what they've seen so far and are planning on marketing campaigns/products intended for gamers," he notes. Will we see this sort of cross-genre marketing more frequently in the future? Bajheera spots us through some insights.
