Apple launching marketing campaign for Final Cut Pro X

The LA Times is reporting that Apple, stinging from criticism from professional users that the 2011 redesign of Final Cut Pro X (US$299.99) had made it a "cheap product aimed at consumers," is launching an online marketing campaign today to try to win back professional video editors who may have switched to competitive software.

The start of the campaign is timed to begin getting the word out prior to the start of the National Association of Broadcasters convention on April 6. Apple's campaign features Final Cut Pro X users like Julian Liurette of the Toronto Globe and Mail newspaper, who was skeptical of the app and waited a year before trying the new version. Liurette liked the new version so much that he's moved the newspaper's video operations from the old version to Final Cut Pro X. According to Liurette, "It's better on all fronts. Its interface is 100 times more interesting. And it's much, much faster."

Apple hopes to change the mindset of people like Harry Miller, head of the American Cinema Editors' technology committee, who said "Personally, I'm still suspicious of Apple ... I don't want to invest money in any of their hardware or software when they might drop features in new versions."

To do so, three stories will be posted on the website today including that of Liurette. Also expected to tout the features and speed of Final Cut Pro X are Tsui Hark, a big name in Hong Kong cinema circles, and Azteca Telenovela editor Jonathan Contreras. The latter pro says that "For a TV editor, speed is everything. And Final Cut Pro X is faster than any other editing application I've used."

The campaign has begun, and the videos are viewable on the Final Cut "In Action" web page.

Patch 5.2 hotfixes for March 27

Patch 52 hotfixes for March 27
Another round of hotfixes for patch 5.2 has just been released on the official blog. It's a pretty short list, by and large involving changes for several classes. Before you get too panicked, most of the class changes simply involve tweaks to T15 set bonuses rather than direct class changes. Shaman with a penchant for healing, however, should be pretty happy with this round of fixes.
  • The shaman spells and abilities Chain Heal, Healing Rain, and Earthliving Weapon now all heal for 20% more.
  • T15 Brewmaster monk 2-piece should now correctly increase Stagger by 12%.
  • Oondasta's health has been reduced by 50%. This does not, however, make him any less terrifying or deadly.
Read on for the full list of hotfixes.

New Research Looks At Novel Ways To Combat Drug Resistance

University of Southampton biological scientists are leading a major research project aimed at making drugs more effective. They are investigating a group of proteins called 'multidrug transporters', which remove unwanted and toxic material from cells. Normally these proteins protect cells from toxins, but multidrug transporters also prevent anticancer drugs from killing cancer cells, particularly since the amount of these proteins is increased in cancer cells when they encounter such drugs...

Firaxis' Haunted Hollow combines monstrous fun with some serious strategy

Hearing that Firaxis Games (the famous studio behind great games like Civilization and XCOM -- which itself is coming to iPad very soon) is making an original game for iOS is very exciting. That game is Haunted Hollow, and I got to see it in action this week at GDC.

Lead designers Will Miller and David McDonough have overseen the game's development for about a year. The group hopes to release Haunted Hollow later this spring. The game is surprisingly complicated, and though it definitely follows the Firaxis tradition of very well-crafted and complex strategy games, it also makes you wonder how the typically casual iOS audience will take to it.

Miller told me that Haunted Hollow has always had a haunted house vibe to it. He showed off a picture used in the initial pitch, featuring two different haunted houses dangling over the edges of a town in the middle. The game contains online Game Center multiplayer, a pass-and-play mode and a single player vs. AI mode, so the title always pits you as the caretaker of one house against another house-building opponent, with a town of unsuspecting civilians lying in the middle.

Each turn tells you which kind of room to build, and provides action points (called "fear points"), with which to perform various actions. Building a room allows you to create monsters, which you can then send with a movement into the town below.

You pick up to five monsters to play with per game, and they all are of three types: Scary, "Fighty" or Special. Scary monsters can be used to scare townspeople, and scaring a house wins it to your side, with more fear points coming to you if you can scare a whole block. Fighty monsters can be used to fight and kill other monsters, and Special monsters offer a blend of those, or other different abilities. Ghosts, for example, are very scary but they don't survive long. Werewolves are very fighty, but can't be used to scare very well. Special monsters each have their own abilities: Wendigo can freeze the opponent, and zombies can raise an army to join the battle.

As the game progresses, each player claims houses in the town by scaring them with various monsters, and the eventual goal is to claim the whole town for your color. Managing the monsters is fairly deep in terms of strategy, and other mechanics build to further complicate things. The rooms you build onto your house can be doubled up and upgraded, if you build them in the correct layout and order. There are different types of houses to choose from at the beginning of the game, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Scaring people in the town can rile them up into an angry mob, which is a completely neutral unit that can not only kill monsters on either side, but even tear down houses completely, which means not as much territory to conquer.

While the graphics on the monsters and houses may be cartoony and colorful, the strategy is definitely not playing around. Miller told me that the game should work for children, but I can't imagine anyone but the very smartest of 7-year-olds really figuring out the mechanics and best strategy. Matches are supposed to last as long as a short game of Civilization Revolution, which means this game will likely be the length (and have the depth) of a fairly serious board game.

Still, for strategy junkies like myself, Haunted Hollow sounds terrific. The model may give some gamers pause: The title will be free to play, with only five monsters available for free. Firaxis plans to charge for other monster types, up to 12 different monsters at a rate around US$1.99 per monster. That would make the entire game about $24.99, which isn't a bad price, but which isn't cheap for an iOS title, either. Especially if one of the monsters is unbalanced (not likely with Firaxis at the helm, but still), the model could backfire on them.

But Miller did say the team was considering a "pay-once-for-everything" price, so hopefully that will work out right. Outside of the payment model, Haunted Hollow seems like an iOS game that fits perfectly with the great Firaxis tradition and reputation, and a solid entry on the platform for the studio. I'm very excited to dive into its fascinating strategy mechanics when it arrives on the App Store this spring.

Consolidated Health Economic Evaluation Reporting Standards (CHEERS) statement

Economic evaluations of health interventions pose a particular challenge for reporting. There is also a need to consolidate and update existing guidelines and promote their use in a user friendly manner. The Consolidated Health Economic Evaluation Reporting Standards (CHEERS) statement is an attempt to consolidate and update previous health economic evaluation guidelines efforts into one current, useful reporting guidance. The primary audiences for the CHEERS statement are researchers reporting economic evaluations and the editors and peer reviewers assessing them for publication. The need for new reporting guidance was identified by a survey of medical editors. A list of possible items based on a systematic review was created. A two round, modified Delphi panel consisting of representatives from academia, clinical practice, industry, government, and the editorial community was conducted. Out of 44 candidate items, 24 items and accompanying recommendations were developed. The recommendations are contained in a user friendly, 24 item checklist. A copy of the statement, accompanying checklist, and this report can be found on the ISPOR Health Economic Evaluations Publication Guidelines Task Force website (http://www.ispor.org/TaskForces/EconomicPubGuidelines.asp).We hope CHEERS will lead to better reporting, and ultimately, better health decisions. To facilitate dissemination and uptake, the CHEERS statement is being co-published across 10 health economics and medical journals. We encourage other journals and groups, to endorse CHEERS. The author team plans to review the checklist for an update in five years.

BionicOpter dragonfly drone flutters about, blows minds

BionicOpter dragonfly drone flutters about, blows minds

Festo isn't quite the household name that Boston Dynamics is. (And, really, we're not entirely sure Big Dog is a regular topic of conversation at dinner tables yet.) But, it certainly deserves just as much attention for the work they're doing with robotics. After crafting a machine last year that soared around like a herring gull, now the company has created BionicOpter. The 17.3-inch long dragonfly drone can flutter through the air in any direction, and even hover, just like its biological inspiration. Its four carbon fiber and foil wings beat up to 20 times per-second, propelling it through the air as if it were swimming rather than flying. Actually piloting the robo-bug is achieved through a smartphone app, but an on-board ARM-based microcontroller makes small adjustments to ensure stability during flight. There are a few important pieces of information we don't have just yet. For one, it's not clear how long the two-cell lithium ion battery will last, and pricing or availability are missing from the brochure (at the source link). Chances are though, you'll never be able to afford one any way. Thankfully you can at least see this marvel of engineering in action after the break.

Satechi 10-Port USB 3.0 Hub delivers the goods in a fast package

Satechi 10Port USB 30 Hub delivers the goods quickly

Satechi has always made impressive accessories like the 12-port USB 2.0 hub that Mike Rose reviewed last year. Now, the company is delivering speed and a plethora of ports for those with USB 3.0-equipped Macs with a new 10-Port USB 3.0 Hub (US$69.99, currently on sale for $59.99). Let's take a look at this beast and see how it works with a new iMac.

Design

Like the 12-port hub that Mike reviewed, the USB 3.0 Hub is surprisingly good-looking. Yeah, I know that a USB hub isn't something you'd normally get excited about, but this one is impressive. Nine of the USB ports are arranged in groups of three on the top of the unit, with a set of switches that can be used to turn those groups on or off -- perfect for those situations when you don't need to keep a peripheral powered up unnecessarily.

So where's the other port? It's a special port built into one end of the hub with the amperage necessary to quickly charge an iPad. The nine ports on the top of the unit are all equipped with blue LEDs to indicate which banks of ports are turned on, and more LEDs to let you know when a specific port is in use.

The hub supports USB 3.0, meaning you can expect transfer speeds of up to 5 Gbps. It's equipped with its own power supply so you can be sure that all of your bus-powered devices (such as external hard disk drives) are getting the juice they need.

Size-wise, the hub runs about 8.5" long, 1" high, and 1.75" deep. In addition to that iPad-specific USB port on one end, there's a power switch for turning the entire gizmo on or off, while the other end features a USB 3.0 SuperSpeed port and the power connection.

With the hub, Satechi thoughtfully provides a monster power supply, a USB 3.0 cable, and some Velcro for attaching the hub to a surface.

Functionality

When I said "monster power supply" in the previous paragraph, I meant it. This thing supports up to 5000 mA of current, and it's good-sized. It was so large that I couldn't get it through the port in the back of my desk that I snake power cords and supplies through. Fortunately, I was able to use some string and ingenuity to lift the skinny end of the cord up to the hub and plug it in. I also found the AC two-prong plug on the other end of the power supply to be loose-fitting in the socket.

Once I had seven different cables plugged into the hub, it was time to give it a try. The blue LEDs that light up the USB sockets and indicate live connections were not as bright as I had anticipated, which is a good thing. I'm not sure that bright blue LEDs lighting up a room would be desirable.

Speed-wise, I noticed no differences compared to being plugged right into the back of the iMac. What's nice is that all but one of the USB 3.0 ports on my iMac are now empty and that all of the USB cables are now sitting in view as I work with the iMac. For testing USB 3.0 devices, I'll no longer have to yank cables out of the back of the iMac to make a port available.

My only other gripe is that the shiny plastic exterior of the hub collects fingerprints and dust that are quite visible. I'd suggest that Satechi look at making future models with a matte finish that could resist fingerprints.

Conclusion

Now that Apple is supporting USB 3.0 on a growing number of Macs and many external peripherals are turning to the faster standard, it's about time that some manufacturer came out with a USB hub with a decent number of powered ports. The Satechi 10-Port USB 3.0 Hub looks like it will be a popular accessory for a lot of Mac users.

Pros

  • Nine ports plus a dedicated high current port for recharging an iPad
  • Utilizes the fast USB 3.0 standard
  • Unobtrusive blue LEDs indicate what ports are currently turned on and in use
  • Banks of ports can be shut off to save power

Cons

  • Power supply didn't appear to be of very good quality and was physically large

Who is it for?

  • Anyone with a new Mac that supports USB 3.0 who needs more than just a handful of ports

WoW Archivist: Blizzard's April Fool's jokes are more real than you think

The EPEEN system
WoW Archivist explores the secrets of World of Warcraft's past. What did the game look like years ago? Who is etched into WoW's history? What secrets does the game still hold?

It all began in 2003, when Blizzard announced pandaren as a playable race -- for Warcraft III. This never happened, of course. The announcement was an April Fool's joke. But you know that someone at Blizzard back then really wanted to play as a panda. Nine years later, with the Mists of Pandaria expansion, we can all be pandaren now.

When Mists was first revealed, the outcry from some in the community was fierce. Much of it centered around how "pandaren were just an April Fool's joke." Most of us, I would hazard to guess, have been won over by them in this expansion. With their incredibly deep history, love of life/beer, and gorgeous architecture, not to mention the amazing voice acting and animations that bring them to life, the pandaren have been a bigger hit for WoW than many ever imagined they could be.

In 2004, a playable goblin tinker for Warcraft III was another April Fool's joke. An overwhelmingly enthused response for playable tinkers led to Blizzard adding them to the game.

Given the origins of the pandaren and goblin tinkers, it's safe to say that any April Fool's joke that Blizzard has done over the years could one day spawn a tangible addition to the game, or perhaps a spinoff under the WoW brand. Let's look back at Blizzard's WoW-related April Fool's jokes to see which ones could be the next to become real -- and which ones already have.

Part Of Gastric Bypass Benefit Could Be Change In Gut Microbes

A new study suggests some of the weight loss that patients experience after gastric bypass surgery could be a result of changes in the mix of microbes in their gut. The researchers say manipulating microbe populations may offer an alternative treatment for obesity, for instance for patients who can't have gastric surgery. Lee Kaplan, director of the Obesity, Metabolism and Nutrition Institute at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), and colleagues, write about their findings in the 27 March online issue of Science Translational Medicine...

Watch Kareem, Bird, Russell and Magic's Hilarious New Commercial

I can't be the only one who feels this way. And apparently I'm not.

Every time I've seen one of those "It's Not Complicated" AT&T commercials where actor Beck Bennett tries to make sense of some colorful answers from a group of children, I've always thought the same thing—can't we get rid of these kids already and swap them out for a Hall of Fame quartet?

OK, so maybe it hasn't entered my mind every time. Maybe never.

But luckily for you and I, some marketing whiz over at AT&T saw some potential in surrounding Bennett with some of basketball's biggest names: Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.

Bennett asks the group a simple question, "In basketball, is it better to be bigger or smaller?"

The group answers with a resounding "Bigger," then Bennett attempts to high-five each of the literally larger-than-life heroes of the hardwood. Bennett dishes out high-fives to Johnson, Bird and Abdul-Jabbar, but the commercial cuts away as he returns to his seat only to see Russell's hand looming far above his head.

The tagline for the ad follows the same pattern used for Bennett's previous spots: "It's not complicated — bigger is better."

I know I'm going out on a limb here, but I'm guessing Johnson helped orchestrate the commercial. He gave basketball fans a 13-year sample size of his superhuman vision. Not to mention he's the only basketball star to get a solo line in the piece.

For whoever was the real person (or persons) behind the ad campaign, let me just say this: Thank you. I've always enjoyed the banter between Bennett and the kids (at least the first time I've seen the spot), but pairing these four stars together is something that will never get old.

Tuukka Rask Tries to Smash Stick on the Boards After Loss to the Habs, Falls on His Butt (Video)

Without a doubt, the biggest surprise of the abbreviated 2013 NHL season is the Montreal Canadiens.

Breakfast Topic: Why can't we all find Enlightenment?

Breakfast Topic Why can't we all find Enlightenment
As a (fairly) new monk, I have to say I love the fact that monks have their very own daily quest. Every day -- and an extra time every ten levels -- we can head out to the Peak of Serenity in Pandaria, where we train with our fellow monks.

If you aren't aware that this quest was daily, and only visited the Peak of Serenity for class quests every ten levels, you should get on board! It's easy to do -- just cast Zen Pilgrimage every day and spend a couple of minutes sparring with one of the monk trainers -- and the reward is very much worth it, not only giving you great XP, but also the Enlightenment buff that provides +50% experience from questing and killing. If you're leveling, I don't have to tell you how invaluable that kind of XP buff is. In fact, it's so invaluable, that whenever I've switched to another alt I really miss it. Leveling any other class, no matter how efficient you are with heirlooms and rested bonuses, is slower than leveling a monk.

And all I have to say is... where are the other class quests? Why don't hunters have daily target practice quests? Why don't mages have daily drills in fire, frost, and arcane magics? Why don't warlocks have daily demon duels? And what do you think, dear readers? Do other classes need their own daily quests, or would it just add to the frankly overwhelming pile of dailies we already have?

What's the purpose of a heroic dungeon?

What is the purpose of a heroic dungeon
One of the more volatile announcements that we've heard so far from Blizzard regarding Mists of Pandaria is the fact that Mists will not include any more 5-man dungeons. In an expansion where new content seems to be rolling out on a much faster, tighter basis than any expansion prior this seems a little bizarre to players, particularly those that enjoy dungeon-based content. Yet one of the things Mists has been doing consistently throughout the expansion is delivering a wider array of things to do. In fact, there's such a variety in endgame content that players sometimes feel legitimately overwhelmed by the sheer amount of it.

But just because we aren't getting any new dungeons doesn't mean we aren't getting alternate ways to obtain all that sweet, sweet gear we know and love. Patch 5.3 will see the introduction of heroic scenarios, slightly tougher versions of the scenarios we've already seen this expansion. In addition to valor, the heroic scenarios will offer raid-finder level rewards for players that choose to participate in them -- better than any gear you'll find in a heroic dungeon at this point.

While this may seem pretty cool for some people, it does make one wonder -- what's the purpose of heroic dungeons?

Level 90 PvP Gems and Enchants by primary stat

PvP Gems, Enchants and Consumables by primary stat
Everyone knows where to get their PvP gear -- it's on the Serpent's Spine -- and with Blizzard's changes to the gear vendor panes, it's fairly straightforward to whittle it down to just exactly what you're after. However, one thing that's not so simple is the rest of the work you need to do. As we all know, gear needs gems, and it needs enchants, and we've struggled to find a place that pulls together all the PvP options for that, so we through we'd make one. Let's get started.

Pure PvP Stats

These, naturally, are items that provide increases in neat PvP stats, with no secondary stats. If you look back at my column which covered the changes to resilience, you can see how important these stats are. Depending on your style, class, and the season, these may be the best choice. There are no Jewelcrafting-only pure PvP stat gems.

Gems:

NHL Trade Rumors: Ryan Miller, Roberto Luongo and More Buzz Around League

Believe it or not, there is still an NHL trade deadline in place even though Jarome Iginla has been traded. Who knew?

I kid, I kid. The rumors are now flying around the league and plenty of big names remain on the trading block. Heck, one imagines the Boston Bruins will make a trade simply so they don't feel like jilted lovers after Iginla scorned them for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

With that in mind, let's round up a few of the juicy rumors making the rounds around the NHL.

Ryan Miller, Buffalo Sabres

Could the Sabres actually move starting goalie Ryan Miller?

It's a distinct possibility, writes Craig Custance of ESPN Insider:

Starting goalie Ryan Miller has another season remaining on his contract that comes with an annual cap hit of $6.25 million (salary info per CapGeek.com). Miller has trade protection in that he can submit a list of teams he won't accept a trade to, but there are some teams that believe Miller wants out of Buffalo. And really, you can't blame him. That situation might depend on what happens with GM Darcy Regier and the coaching staff after this season, but it's one to watch closely.

Meanwhile, Andy Strickland of True Hockey has more info on that list of teams:

If you're looking for a fun way to spend the evening with your friends, grab a six pack and try to figure out which eight teams Miller refuses to play for! What fun!

In all honesty, I don't see Miller moving at the deadline, not in what is looking like a saturated goalie market with Miikka Kiprusof apparently on the block along with the two players listed below. Still, if I was going to deal for a goalie this season, Miller would be on my list.

Roberto Luongo and Cory Schneider, Vancouver Canucks

For the time being it remains all quiet on the Roberto Luongo front, which is a bit surprising seeing as the Canucks seem more dedicated to Cory Schneider moving forward.

It's not that teams haven't been inquiring, as Custance writes—the Canucks just aren't hearing what they need to hear to move either player:

It's been a bit lost in the Iginla and Kiprusoff trade rumors, but things have gone quiet on the Roberto Luongo front. Teams are still calling Vancouver GM Mike Gillis about Luongo and Cory Schneider, but the reality is a summer goalie shuffle will provide more fertile ground for the Canucks to get full value for Luongo. Full value means a player who helps the Canucks immediately and a piece or two that helps them in the future.

At the end of the day, having two No. 1 goalies heading into the playoffs is a nice luxury, and the Canucks shouldn't trade Luongo simply to trade Luongo. Don't expect him to be moved until this summer.

Max Talbot and Daniel Briere, Philadelphia Flyers

You can accuse the Philadelphia Flyers of a lot of things this season—namely, dramatically underachieving—but don't accuse them of giving up on the season just yet.

According to Renaud Lavoie of RDS, a lot of teams have come calling about Max Talbot, but the Flyers are having none of it:

The Flyers are currently outside of the playoff picture looking in, and have already been rumored to consider moving forward Daniel Briere, according to Joe Haggerty of CSNNE:

Don't be shocked if the Flyers become mild sellers as the deadline looms.

Patch 5.3 PTR: New scenarios and Lorewalker Cho

Patch 53 PTR New scenarios and Lorewalker Cho
Patch 5.3 has some changes coming for scenario content. In addition to the new heroic versions of all existing scenarios, several new scenarios have been added. Unlike patch 5.1's Dagger in the Dark and A Little Patience, all scenarios will apparently be available to both sides upon patch 5.3's release. Much like what we're seeing with these faction-specific scenarios in patch 5.2, players of either faction will be given a disguise so that they may play through the other faction's content without fear of being murdered.

But there are a few other developments with scenarios as well. Upon logging into the PTR, both Alliance and Horde players will receive a letter from Lorewalker Cho, asking them to come to the Lorewalkers area in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms. Once there, Lorewalker Cho offers a quest that triggers a story scene briefly explaining the story behind the Blood in the Snow scenario, complete with visions of Varian Wrynn and Moira Bronzebeard, and asking players to complete the scenario so he can know the rest of the story.

WWE WrestleMania 29: Ryback Should Be John Cena's Opponent After the PPV

With rumors swirling about CM Punk taking time off after WrestleMania 29 for some rest and relaxation, could the WWE finally have found the "imperfect" match for John Cena? That is, if Cena beats (OK, we know he is going to do that) The Rock in 13 days in New Jersey.

Could Ryback be the perfect storm for Cena and his rebirth of Cenation in the WWE after WrestleMania 29?

I am of the opinion that Ryback's character is stale, getting beaten to hell by The Shield. This could be the swerve we all have been looking for in subplots to change the direction of the company. We were all excited to jump on the Ryback bandwagon toward the end of 2012, bulging biceps and all. The mere thought of a mega-monster dethroning CM Punk to become the WWE champion had us all giddy inside.

Then, injuries to Punk and misdirection by WWE creative writers took over and, well, Ryback never became the star we all wanted. Now, he's locked into a battle with The Shield and in a corner with Randy Orton (who has teased us forever with his potential heel turn) and Sheamus, who cannot decide who to piss off and start a feud with.

Now, Mark Henry has become the object of Ryback's mean affection. Should the WWE continue that feud toward Extreme Rules? What should the WWE do with the "Big Hungry"?

Let's take the guesswork out of the entire plan right now. Having the big man face Cena means a whole new kind of beatdown for Cena and a whole new set of likes and dislikes by fans across the WWE Universe.

Even with a heel turn by Ryback, if that were to happen (which I think is a great move), it would still give Cena momentum.

A new foe. A new obstacle. A new chance to prove he is the best at what he does and another shot at redemption of sorts.

Cena has beaten nearly everyone in the WWE in his tenure. This would add to his "accomplishments."

This is also fodder for CM Punk as well. If the Cena/Ryback feud goes nowhere, then Punk is there to "save the day" in Mighty Mouse fashion. We all love a great match and rivalry like Punk/Cena, but sometimes we all need a little break in the action.

Should Ryback be allowed to hold the WWE Title, then Cena can charge through and take back what is rightfully his and have Punk waiting for him at the end of the bridge.

This is an option the WWE should look at. Whether it is in the works remains to be seen. Vince McMahon said back at TLC that Ryback would get his WWE Title shot because he earned it. Now it's time for Vince to back up what he said.

This is the way for him to do it.

WoW Moviewatch: Stormwind City Theme as Hip Hop

The Stormwind City Theme Hip-Hop Version brings new, hip life to the old theme. It doesn't really scream hip hop to me, though. Perhaps something like techno, or industrial. But not really. I don't know, hip hop is as fine as anything else, I guess.

While I don't think the video is particularly mindblowing, it is a decent Titantron-esque rendering to watch while you listen to the music. I would have liked to see soldiers marching, or some other martial imagery, since even the remixed version has that military cadence. Ultimately, though, the music is satisfying and worth a listen.

Are patches coming too fast?

throne of thunder
So the Patch 5.3 PTR was announced earlier this week, and I am currently downloading the files for it as I write this. Patch 5.2 only went live a couple of weeks ago, and its PTR began in January, a mere few weeks after 5.1 was released. Oh, and Mists of Pandaria itself has only been available since October! Whew! Ladies and Gentlemen, content in WoW's fourth expansion has been coming at a breakneck pace, and I'm not entirely sure I like it.

I'm a slow player, in all honesty. I like to take my time and explore, do lots of quests, level professions, and generally just take my sweet time. I play WoW largely to relax, and for me, racing through everything as quickly as possible is not relaxing. I also have a pretty hard limit to the amount of time I can spend playing before I start to go stir crazy and really need to get up and do something else. That isn't conducive to rapidly completing things like daily-based rep grinds. So for me, I'm a little disappointed by the short spaces between new content being released. It kind of stresses me out, makes me feel like I need to play more, and harder, to keep up. I realize that feeling is all in my own head, but it doesn't stop me from wishing I had, oh, maybe two extra weeks before the 5.3 PTR was announced!
