Raid Rx: Top healing moments of 2011

Every week, Raid Rx will help you quarterback your healers to victory! Your host is Matt Low, the grand poohbah of World of Matticus and a founder of Plus Heal, a discussion community for healers of all experience levels and interests. Catch his weekly podcast on healing, raiding and leading, the Matticast.

This was a fun year for me as a healer. Granted, I had to learn how to heal again, but I do enjoy this expansion's model of healing (although a part of me does miss The Burning Crusade a little when all I had to do was pound Circle of Healing repeatedly). There were many memorable moments that I experienced during raids, and there are others that affected many more of us.

Announcing the monk Undoubtedly the best news for healers this year is this. BlizzCon 2011 unveiled a ton of news and announcements. The biggest one for healers was that there would be a new healing class for players. You guessed it, I guessed it, and I'm pretty sure half the world guessed and hoped for a monk class. These leather-wearing bears are set to help heal in the upcoming challenges that Mists of Pandaria will be throwing our way. While we don't have a complete look on the full range of abilities that monks can do, we do know that they rely heavily on mobility to get their spells out.

Around Azeroth: Being Archmage Malkovich

Sure, transmogrification sounded like a good idea, until the damn hipsters got hold of the technology. Now everyone is hanging around Dalaran wearing the same super-cool Netherwind Regalia sets, drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon and listening to Bon Iver. (Full disclosure: I went to high school with the dude from Bon Iver and he was actually pretty cool, but I will still make fun of his ridiculous beard. Sorry, Justin.)

Submitter Zorax of Area 52 (US-H) wonders how many Blackwing Lair runs it took for everyone to get their full sets, but really, it's just a common effect of a potion you can find in the Underbelly. So folks, go ahead and drink any psychedelic drinks you find sitting around in sewers. What's the worst thing that can happen?

Mutated Bird Flu Research Worries World Health Organization

Research on the H5N1 influenza (bird flu) virus' human transmissibility is seriously starting to worry WHO (World Health Organization) experts - in a written statement, the authors express concern about the potential risks linked to this research. The possible negative consequences of some experiments are serious and potentially dangerous. However, WHO adds that in cases where scientists work under the strictest of conditions, experiments should continue so that the fight against bird flu may progress. The H5N1 flu virus does not infect humans easily or often...

Lenovo Ideapad S110 may be blazing the Cedar Trail, ditching netbook moniker

Between the line of Cedar Trail notebooks marching their way through the FCC and Intel's recent shipping announcement, it's high time manufacturers started parading out next year's kits. Today's tease hails from Lenovo, which has outed the Ideapad S110 in no less than four fabulous colors. Although the outfit's promo video doesn't touch on hardware specs, a Pro Vantage product page claims the setup sports an Intel Atom 2600 processor. The self titled "mini notebook" features a 10.1-inch "HD display," presumably rocking the same 720p resolution as the rig's optional 2 megapixel webcam, if not the full 1080p Intel says the N2600 supports. Buyers will also be able to opt for an optional 3G radio, though USB 3.0, Lenovo quick start "instant on," and a 98-percent full-size chiclet keyboard all come standard. The video didn't pack an official press release, but we hear there's a major trade show right around the corner that's just perfect for announcing products.

WoW Moviewatch: Stoney Baby

We're still in the grips of Winter Veil hysteria here, with the occasional shout-out to real-life Christmas. Today's video parody is titled Stoney Baby. It's an obvious parody of Santa Baby, aimed right down the barrel at Rich Maloy of Big Crits. Written and performed by Erin Campbell, Stoney Baby has plenty of puns and jokes to mark the time.

I enjoyed the animation in the video, especially, because it looks like it was created nearly entirely from in-game footage. That's rare enough nowadays that it almost feels unique to see videos based on the game itself. So for this holiday season, Stoney Baby has a little bit of it all: a fun song, great voice, and in-game animation. Check it out and let us know what you think.

Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! Have suggestions for machinima we ought to feature? Toss us an email at moviewatch@wowinsider.com.

Remembering the Apple Paladin and other prototypes

Way back in 2006 we had a story from AppleGazette about 5 Apple products which never made it to production. Today there's a photo of an old "touchscreen" phone Apple prototyped circulating (although I remember digging this up when the iPhone was announced; we never ran the story it seems) and I wound up doing a whopping five minutes of research on Flickr for more Apple prototypes. Like fishing for Steve Jobs videos on YouTube, these diversions can be a lot of fun. It's a bit like staring into an alternate universe, seeing glimpses of Apple's ambitions -- often ahead of their time, and re-appearing years later in substantially refined form.

The Paladin is one of those Frankenstein machines you'd never imagine would emerge out of Cupertino. While the "touchscreen phone" prototype was stylish, the Paladin looks like a Duo and a fax machine took a cue from the Wuzzles and had some freakish techno-mutt. Paladin had a pull-out keyboard with trackball. The combination of a fax machine, scanner, phone and computer probably made sense before the Newton, but molded as a typical fax machine in that old beige just seems so... uninspired. Then again, this was 1994 -- not exactly an era of innovation from Apple, unless you count endless models of Performas "progress" (the market sure didn't). The Paladin doesn't even have an Apple logo up top, instead showing Apple on the label only. Of course, the pics from Jim Abeles are showing a prototype, so there's no real reason to attach a logo at this point in the process.

Mr. Abeles has a few curious prototypes on his Flickr page, including an iPhone, a 13" MacBook in very rough form, the Newton-powered Bic and Cadillac prototypes (way before the iPad), the W.A.L.T. (Wizzy Active Lifestyle Telephone), and a Mac Portable with transparent case (translucent plastic, OMG!). Apparently he's collected more, but only these ultra-rare prototypes are on Flickr. What a collection!

Breakfast Topic: What have you farmed eternally for?

I have a love/hate relationship with Karazhan. I love it because it's got great music, a great layout, and amazing bosses, and it's Medivh's old house. Goodness knows I love Medivh. But the single reason I absolutely hate the place can be traced to the stables and the horse that stands within. Oh Midnight, how I hate you. You and Attumen both. Since the launch of The Burning Crusade, I've been murdering that horse on a semi-regular basis, hoping for the Fiery Warhorse's Reins to drop. I have seen the horse drop precisely once since The Burning Crusade, and it went to somebody else. I cannot recall the exact number of times I've stepped in there and squashed the horse, but it's been a regular weekly occurrence since Wrath. Step in, fight to the horse, kill the horse, loot the horse, find nothing useful at all. Rinse and repeat.

There are other rare things I've farmed before, of course. The Tiny Emerald Whelpling and Disgusting Oozeling were both farmed well before the Cataclysm revamp -- before the Crusader's Coliseum was released, even. Having dual monitors helped; I made it through two, two and a half seasons worth of Doctor Who before I had both pets in my hands. But the horse. The horse still eludes me. Some day I'll have it for my own; until then, I'll continue farming, zombie-like, until the fateful day I find the right purple item on the corpse, instead of just another pair of useless gloves.

Do you have anything you're farming currently, or do you think those of us that farm are quite frankly devoid of all sanity? Have you farmed for anything before? What's the longest it's taken for you to get a coveted item, pet, or mount?

The best of WoW Insider: November 2011

Silversol: You cast symbiosis on a warlock. You get soul swap. They get symbiosis. Combat log divides by zero. Your computer gets sucked into a black hole.

Patch 4.3 went live on Nov. 29 to much rejoicing (well, from everyone barring a very unhappy legion of restoration druids smarting over the Wild Growth nerf), and Blizzard saw it, and said that it was good, and rested on Sunday, and then went back to nerfing everything on Monday.

Also, Skyrim was released around the middle of the month, and we didn't hear from several of our staffers for weeks.

Brock Lesnar Retires: Is a WWE Return a Possibility?

When it comes to Ultimate Fighting, it looks like Brock Lesnar is calling it a career and stepping out of the Octagon for good.

After a devastating loss to Alistair Overeem at UFC 141, Lesnar told the Ultimate Fighting world that he is hanging up his gloves permanently, ending with a 5-3 record and one heavyweight championship reign.

Lesnar has had an incredibly tough couple of years after being diagnosed with diverticulitis back in 2009, resulting in serious surgery and a long road back to recovery.

Since then, his heavyweight domination has completely evaporated, and after taking another humiliating L to Overeem, Lesnar is officially out of the UFC.

His announcement was quick but straightforward. He's lost a step. He knows it, and a guy like Lesnar has too much pride to allow his legacy to continue to crumble.

Of course, maybe this was just a gut move by Lesnar after being humiliated by Overeem, but it is very clear by watching his last two matches that something is missing. The former NCAA wrestling champ has lost all the momentum that turned him into the face of the UFC only a few years ago, and at this rate he may never get it back again.

If this really is the end of Lesnar's career, though, big rumors are about to swirl about what he'll do next.

Maybe Lesnar does have one more match left in him, but I'm not talking about in the Octagon, I'm talking about in the place that first made him a household name almost a decade ago.

A WWE ring.

I can guarantee you that Vince McMahon is already telling his minions to get into contact with Brock immediately and throw a truck full of money at him, before he changes his mind.

Lesnar can certainly expect a big payday if he was to return to the WWE...even if it would most likely be for one more match, most likely against The Undertaker.

Who knows, he might be working on his F5 as you're reading this.

Remember this? Yup, let the hype begin.

Expect a lot of people to voice their opinions within the next few days, but for now what do you guys think?

Will Lesnar come back to the WWE for a short stint? Will he change his mind and reenter the octagon?

Or is this the last we've seen of Brock Lesnar?

UFC 141 Odds: Brock Lesnar Will Upset Alistair Overeem

Brock Lesnar will steal your money if you bet against him.

The former UFC heavyweight champion may be an underdog to Alistair Overseem, but that won’t keep him from being the last one standing on Friday night.  According to Bovado, Overeem is a -130 favorite over Lesnar, but avoiding a wrestling match against the former NCAA Champion would be a wise decision as Odds Shark’s Jack Randall writes…

“The chances that Lesnar is able to get this fight to the ground are very real, and if he does he will pay off at MMA odds of +125 for the upset.  If he has improved his standup over the last year it could end up being a good battle between two elite athletes.  Lesnar has been out of action for over a year and could show up rusty.”

While Lesnar’s wrestling ability should be feared, at the same time he shouldn’t be doubted because of rust.  He told MMA Weekly all the way back in August how primed he was to get back in the octagon after his successful surgery saying…

“I feel like a new man, healthy, strong, I feel like I used to feel.  My health is 100 percent, I feel great, my motivation is there and I want to get on the map again.  I want to become the UFC heavyweight champion again, and I believe I will do that.”

That doesn’t sound like a fighter that needs a warm-up bout to regain his dominance.  And again, he said that over four months ago.

Now, Overeem is extremely accomplished as a former Strikeforce Heavyweight, Dream Heavyweight and K-1 Kickboxing World Champion.  While Lesnar realistically has no shot to upset Overeem standing up, all it would take is for the wrestler to get him on the ground.

David Daniels is a Featured Columnist at Bleacher Report and a syndicated writer.

HTC updates bootloader unlock utility to support latest Android lineup

It wasn't long ago that HTC's bootloader unlock utility hit the masses, thereby righting the company's silly decision to lock its phones down in the first place. Now, continuing its commitment to mod-lovers and those who appreciate freedom, The House of Chou is announcing that its latest lineup of Android phones can find a similar (and proper) fate. The company has released an updated bootloader unlock tool that supports all Android devices released after September of this year. Naturally, this includes such handsets as the HTC EVO Design 4G, Rezound, Rhyme and Vivid. The company has yet to release an updated list of supported devices, but promises to do so in the coming days. While we're still not crazy about users losing their rights to a warranty, for the moment, that seems to be the price of freedom.

TUAW Best of 2011: Vote for your favorite iPad photo app

The nominations are in, and the poll is ready to go! The TUAW Best of 2011 awards are all about you -- the readers -- and what you think is the cream of the crop of Apple or third-party products and software. To vote, select one entry from the top nominations made by readers. We'll be announcing the winner in just a few days. Vote early and often!

TUAW is asking for your votes for the best iPad photo of 2011. We didn't get too many nominations in this category: first, many more readers use their iPhones for photography than they do their iPads, and second, TUAW readers might be getting a bit tired of Best of 2011 posts. Worry not! We're getting close to the end of the TUAW Best of 2011 series with just a few more categories to go.

However, we didn't really get enough nominees for iPad video apps to make it a valid category for voting, so photography apps are all you get to vote for. The nominees are:

  • Master Your DSLR Camera (US$9.99), an iPad-based tutorial to move you beyond using your DSLR as an expensive point-and-shoot.
  • Snapseed ($4.99), an excellent iPad-based photo post-processing app. The app also works on the iPhone, but the UI on the iPad app benefits from the extra space.
  • flickr hd ($4.99, on sale for $0.99) is a wonderful way to browse your flickr photos on the iPad.
  • Halftone ($0.99), makes a halftoned comic or postcard out of any of your photos. The app now lets you send physical postcards via Sincerely.com, and just keeps getting better.

You have a couple of days to vote, and the winners will be announced on January 2, 2012. Let the voting begin!

Assessing the influence of the built environment on physical activity for utility and recreation in suburban Metro Vancouver

Background:
Physical inactivity and associated co-morbidities such as obesity and cardiovascular disease are estimated to have large societal costs. There is increasing interest in examining the role of the built environment in shaping patterns of physical activity. However, few studies have: (1) simultaneously examined physical activity for leisure and utility; (2) selected study areas with a range of built environment characteristics; and (3) assessed the built environment using high-resolution land use data.
Methods:
Data on individuals used for this study are from a survey of 1602 adults in selected sites across suburban Metro Vancouver. Four types of physical activity were assessed: walking to work/school, walking for errands, walking for leisure and moderate physical activity for exercise. The built environment was assessed by constructing one-kilometre road network buffers around each respondent's postal code. Measures of the built environment include tertiles of recreational and park land, residential land, institutional land, commercial land and land use mix.
Results:
Logistic regression found that walking to work/school and moderate physical activity were not associated with any built environment measure. Living in areas with lower land use mix, lower commercial and lower recreational land increased the odds of low levels of walking for errands. Individuals living in the lower third of land use mix and institutional land were more likely to report low levels of walking for leisure.
Conclusions:
These results suggest that walking for errands and leisure have a greater association with the built environment than other dimensions of physical activity.

Adolescent Drinking May Be As Important A Risk Factor For Criminal Activity As Illicit Drug Use

Alcohol use has often been linked to criminal activity on the part of both perpetrators as well as victims. While this relationship has been well documented among adults, fewer studies have explored this relationship among adolescents. A new study has found a strong relationship between drinking during adolescence and the commission of crimes, and criminal victimization, for both genders. Results will be published in the March 2012 issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research and are currently available at Early View...

Argentina Government blocks sale of iPhone, other smartphones

The government of Argentina has temporarily blocked the sale of smartphones, including Apple's iPhone, in an effort to stabilize its own economy. This consumer electronics ban is meant to slow inflation and reduce the widening chasm between the peso and the US dollar.

The ban is a part of Argentina Ministry Industry's recent decision to reduce the automatic import of certain phones. RIM and Apple have been forced to wait between 60 and 180 days for permission to sell from the Customs Authority. There's no word on how long the current ban will last.

Midwives Use Rituals To Send Message That Women's Bodies Know Best

In reaction to what midwives view as the overly medicalized way hospitals deliver babies, they have created birthing rituals to send the message that women's bodies know best. The midwife experience uses these rituals to send the message that home birth is about female empowerment, strengthening relationships between family and friends, and facilitating participatory experiences that put mothers in control, with the ultimate goal of safe and healthy deliveries less focused on technological intervention...

UK Prime Minister to receive personalized iPad app for government news

UK Prime Minister and long time iPad fan David Cameron will receive a custom iPad app for keeping on top of government news, according to The Telegraph. Cabinet Office programmers have been working on the app that will deliver information such as crime stats, unemployment numbers and much more to the Prime Minister.

Mr. Cameron is a full-on Apple fan. Last year he described how he uses his iMac, iPad and remote speakers to enjoy wireless music in his office. He told The Telegraph, "I'm very proud of the fact that I've got an iMac and I've got a speaker remotely linked without a wire which I did myself. I have all the music on the iMac. The cool thing is that I now control my iMac from the iPad, to play out through the speaker but I have to admit I had a little bit of help from someone in IT on that."

Of course, Prime Minister Cameron isn't the only world leader to enjoy Apple hardware and software. The iPad is popular in Washington, DC, Saudi Arabia and South Korea.

Totem Talk: Healing Hagara the Stormbinder and Ultraxion

Restoration shaman in ugly sweater
Every week, WoW Insider brings you Totem Talk for elemental, enhancement and restoration shaman. Want to be a sultan of swing healing? A champion of Chain Heal? Totem Talk: Restoration, brought to you by Joe Perez (otherwise known as Lodur from World of Matticus and co-host of the For the Lore and Raid Warning podcasts), shows you how.

The siege is, by now, well under way, and now that you're done playing with slimes, it's time to move forward. Your next opponent is Hagara the Stormbinder, a shaman who has fallen under the sway of the aspect of death and now works toward the destruction of the world. Luckily for you, she's an enhancement shaman, so she's pretty easy to deal with.

The major theme for this boss is movement. Every major ability that Hagara has boils down to your moving in the correct manner in order to avoid what would be absolutely lethal damage. Moving and healing has never really been a shaman's strong point, but if you use your abilities wisely, you'll have her down in no time. (For full details of the encounters or full raid strategies, please read Ready Check for WoW Insider's boss guides.)

NBA Rumors: Michael Redd Is Perfect Fit for Reeling Phoenix Suns

The Phoenix Suns are in deep trouble and finding a spark is a must right now.

Management agrees, as they have worked out former All-Star Michael Redd according to azcentral.com.

The Tuesday workout was an attempt for the Suns to get an up-close look at how Redd’s knee is holding up after missing virtually all of the last two seasons with bad knees. He has played in a grand total of 61 games in the past three seasons and it remains to be seen if the 32-year-old has any gas left in the tank.

He tore his ACL and MCL in his left knee in January of 2009 and suffered the same exact injury in 2010. In limited action before the injury, his defense was highly suspect, something the Suns are all too familiar with.

But let’s not forget how strong of an offensive player Redd was before the string of injuries. He averaged 20 points or more in six straight seasons and has a 38-percent career shooting percentage from behind the arc.

No team could use the fee agent more than the Suns, which sport a grand total of one shooting guard on the roster in Josh Childress. They have four point guards and start Steve Nash with two forwards and two centers in their starting lineup. That’s not going to work. Nash needs a shooter to kick it to on the perimeter and needs a teammate that can run with him on the fast break.

Paul Goro of AZ Central makes the excellent point that the Suns have one of the best medical staffs in professional sports. They have helped resurrect the careers of Antonio McDyess, Shaquille O’Neal and Grant Hill.

Considering he will come at a bargain bin veteran’s minimum price, and the Suns currently have the look of the worst team in the Western Conference…might as well give Redd a shot.

Steve Nash needs all the help he can get.

Research Suggests New Way To Ensure Effectiveness Of TB Treatment

A UT Southwestern Medical Center study using a sophisticated "glass mouse" research model has found that multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) is more likely caused in patients by speedy drug metabolism rather than inconsistent doses, as is widely believed. If the study published in The Journal of Infectious Diseases is borne out in future investigations, it may lead to better ways to treat one of the world's major infectious diseases. Health workers worldwide currently are required to witness each administration of the combination of drugs during months of therapy...

New Clues As To Why Some Older People May Be Losing Their Memory

New research links 'silent strokes,' or small spots of dead brain cells, found in about one out of four older adults to memory loss in the elderly. The study is published in the January 3, 2012, print issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. "The new aspect of this study of memory loss in the elderly is that it examines silent strokes and hippocampal shrinkage simultaneously," said study author Adam M. Brickman, PhD, of the Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer's Disease and the Aging Brain at Columbia University Medical Center in New York...

TUAW Best of 2011: Vote for the best iPad case

The nominations are in, and the poll is ready to go! The TUAW Best of 2011 awards are all about you -- the readers -- and what you think is the cream of the crop of Apple or third-party products and software. To vote, select one entry from the top nominations made by readers. We'll be announcing the winner in just a few days. Vote early and often!

TUAW is asking for your votes for the best iPad case of 2011.

Very few iPad owners seem to keep their devices "naked," instead choosing to wrap them in a case of some sort. Much to my surprise, all of the cases were folio type cases, with the "book style" case being the most popular.

Our nominees for this are the Twelve South BookBook for iPad (US$69.99), the Portenzo cases (Customized, Composition, Italian Bonded Leather and Premium Genuine Leather -- $59.95 to $124.95 depending on model, options not included), San Francisco's own DODOcase ($59.95), the Bear Motion folio ($59.95 MSRP), and the Zaggfolio keyboard case ($99.99).

And now, let the voting begin! The results will be announced on December 29, 2011.

ORNL Image Analysis Prowess Advances Retina Research

Armed with a new ability to find retinal anomalies at the cellular level, neurobiologists at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital have made a discovery they hope will ultimately lead to a treatment for cancer of the retina. While much work remains, Oak Ridge National Laboratory's specialized tracing algorithm allows researchers to analyze thousands of cells instead of just a few dozen. This tool has helped reveal a previously undiscovered role of Rb, the retinoblastoma tumor suppressor gene in the developing retina...

The Best of WoW Insider: August 2011

Candida: Knitting Grandmas would be an awesome guild name.

Money, money, money, money. Money! August saw an avalanche of money and gold-related discussion as Blizzard announced that Diablo 3 would feature a real-money Auction House. Oh, and Blizzard registered Mists of Pandaria as a trademark, spurring an endless series of fights on what the hell was going on with that. And then it announced transmogrification and void storage, and we all forgot about pandas for a bit in the interest of farming old raids for some sweet-looking gear.

And holy mother of God, Drama Mamas was on a roll this month.
