Nicole Kirnan Set to Become First Female Coach in Men's Hockey

A former women’s hockey player with the St. Lawrence Skating Saints in NCAA Division I, Nicole Kirnan is set to make hockey history. According to ECACHockey.com, the owner and president of the 1000 Islands Privateers of the Federal Hockey League will assume the role of head coach.

Kirnan will serve as the Privateers bench boss for the two remaining contests of the 2012-13 FHL campaign. A March 1, 2013 match against the second place Danbury Whalers will signify her coaching debut. Of note, the Privateers are based out of Watertown, New York.

Hailing from Syracuse, New York, the 33-year-old will be the first woman to serve as a head coach at the men’s hockey level in North America. She will be replacing outgoing coach Paul Kelly, who is departing because he is returning to the Privateers lineup.

Currently, the Privateers have a record of 17 wins and 25 losses. Of their nine contests that have gone to overtime, five were OT wins, while four were OT losses. Despite the losing record, the club has managed to clinch a playoff berth.

The games against Danbury will be an opportunity for the Privateers to evaluate their first-round opponent in the postseason. Kirnan and the Privateers will open the playoffs on the road on March 8, and a pair of wins to finish the season would bring with it great momentum for the postseason.

For Kirnan, any hopes of becoming the first female head coach to win a league title will be dependent on scoring leaders Peter Campbell and Adam McAllister. Campbell leads the Privateers with 34 goals and 54 assists, while McAllister is second on the team with 57 points. The two will be needed to maintain their high scoring ways.

Her first foray into coaching was with NCAA Division III school Manhattanville College (based out of Purchase, New York). In a four-year coaching stint (2002-06), she led the club to the NCAA tournament in every season. While at Manhattanville, she completed a masters degree in Sports Business Management.

She has also been involved with USA Hockey in various capacities. As a player, she participated in several USA Olympic hockey festivals (including a stint in 1996 on the US Junior National Team). In addition, she has worked with USA Hockey as an evaluator and coach with the National Development Camp.

A systematic review of measures of shoulder pain and functioning using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF)

Background:
Shoulder pain is a common condition with prevalence estimates of 7--26% and the associated disability is multi-faceted. For functional assessments in clinic and research, a number of condition-specific and generic measures are available. With the approval of the ICF, a system is now available for the analysis of health status measures. The aims of this systematic literature review were to identify the most frequently addressed aspects of functioning in assessments of shoulder pain and provide an overview of the content of frequently used measures.
Methods:
Meaningful concepts of the identified measures were extracted and linked to the most precise ICF categories. Second-level categories with a relative frequency above 1% and the content of measures with at least 5 citations were reported.
Results:
A set of 40 second-level ICF categories were identified in 370 single-item measures and 105 multi-item measures, of these, 28 belonged to activities and participation, 11 to body functions and structures and 1 to environmental factors. The most frequently addressed concepts were: pain; movement-related body functions and structures; sleep, hand and arm use, self-care, household tasks, work and employment, and leisure. Concepts of psycho-social functions and environmental factors were less frequently included. The content overview of commonly used condition-specific and generic measures displayed large variations in the number of included concepts. The most wide-ranging measures, the DASH and ASES were linked to 23 and 16 second-level ICF categories, respectively, whereas the Constant were linked to 7 categories and the SST and the SPADI to 6 categories each.
Conclusions:
This systematic review displayed that measures used for shoulder pain included more than twice as many concepts of activities and participation than concepts of body functions and structures. Environmental factors were scarcely addressed. The huge differences in the content of the condition-specific multi-item measures demonstrates the importance of clarifying the content to select the most appropriate measure both in research and in clinical work. For clinical situations, we propose use of a wide-ranging condition-specific measure that conceptualizes assessments of shoulder pain from a bio-psycho-social perspective. Further research is needed to assess how patient-reported problems in functioning are captured in the commonly used measures.

HTC's 'Tiara' crowns a medium spec, Windows Phone 8 GDR2 device

HTC's 'Tiara' crowns a medium spec, Windows Phone 8 GDR2 device

Trust. It's a valuable commodity. But serial twitter-sleuth evleaks has done enough to earn ours for this latest leak. A Windows Phone 8 device -- apparently known internally as the Tiara -- which will be one of the first to run the next revision of the mobile operating system (GDR2). With a reported 4.3-inch display, a 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor, 1.6-megapixel front-facing camera and 1GB of RAM, it bears more than a resemblance to another recent addition to the HTC fold. If you had hopes that it might also borrow from the firm's latest Android flagship design, then sorry to dash them, as the sources suggest otherwise. The Tiara moniker is unlikely to remain, with evleaks taking a stab at it coming to market mid-May, possibly as the HTC 8W. Not a bad guess. Now it's just a matter of waiting to see if all that trust is truly well placed.

Musk vows to repay Tesla's federal loans in five years, not ten

Tesla Model S - rear three-quarter view, black

Tesla
Chief Elon Musk says his company will repay its US Department of Energy loans within five years, Automotive News reports. That's way, way ahead of the 10-year deadline the electric-vehicle maker was originally given to pay back the $465-million loan it got from the feds.

Musk says better-than-expected results are responsible for cutting the planned payback time in half, something that had been talked about late last year. Earlier this month, Musk said the first-quarter of 2013 will be Tesla's first profitable one. The company, which recently ramped up to its full production capacity of 400 Model S sedans a week, delivered about 2,400 of them during the fourth quarter, making it the fourth most-popular US plug-in car in that time frame.

Tesla will evidently speed up its repayment with no thanks to the The New York Times, which caused an uproar when it reported that the Model S' single-charge range was far less than advertised. Musk disputed the report, which was then called into question by other publications and the Times' own public editor. Musk estimated that the original article cut Tesla's stock value by as much as $100 million and may have swayed "a few hundred" into canceling orders for their new electric car.

The Queue Virgin sacrifices, Throne of Thunder progression, and old gods
Welcome back to The Queue, the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Dawn Moore will be your host today.

I was supposed to ritually sacrifice some virgin olive oil yesterday but I completely forgot. Fortunately the sports game the sacrifice was intended for hasn't started yet, and even if it had, it wouldn't be over for days. As it turns out though, I'm a Queue virgin -- that's right, I've never done a Queue before in my three years writing for WoW Insider. Go figure, right?

So how does this being sacrificed thing go? I assume there are cookies.

RussHada asked:

So once Throne of Thunder is released, what will be the official path of progression? Should my group (11/16N) run normal ToT after all 5.0 normal is cleared? Or are there some heroics (MSV?) we should do first, then ToT?

Official: KTM reveals slightly more accommodating X-Bow GT ahead of Geneva

KTM X-Bow GT - front three-quarter view, static

Being a purist is hard work. That's true with just about everything, but it's particularly true when it comes to lightweight roadsters. Jettisoning all manner of refinements including sound deadening, ride compliance and weather protection makes for a more vivid motoring experience, but it also demands a lot more of the driver. As diehard enthusiasts, we're all for that kind of compromise, but if you're on the retailing end, offering such uncompromising, narrowcast cars as the KTM X-Bow has a way of narrowing one's buying audience.

Enter the new KTM X-Bow GT, which adds at least a thin veneer of refinement to the spindly trackday hero in the form of a windshield and side glass. The standard X-Bow, you'll recall, makes do with but a sliver of a wind blocker - the sort of assembly that doesn't keep the bugs out of your teeth, let alone the rain and chill away from your body. So even if it doesn't look quite as racy, this new X-Bow GT should improve the car's long-distance livability and add a few more driving days to the season. It will even be available with heated front and side glass and, luxury of luxuries, a windshield wiper/washer system. Still no word of a top of any sort, however.

The GT is based on the X-Bow R, which relies on a version Audi's ubiquitous 2.0-liter turbo four. In this tune, the engine is said to be good for 285 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. For the moment, KTM isn't releasing any performance, pricing or availability information, but we should know more when we see the car unveiled at next week's Geneva Motor Show.

Is Evander Kane Right, Does Hockey Have a Problem with Racism?

Evander Kane leveled a harsh charge at the sport of hockey and the National Hockey League when he told The Hockey News that much of the criticism he has received is race related.

Kane received plenty of criticism during the lockout when he posed with stacks of cash while standing on a Las Vegas balcony as he pantomimed making a call to boxing champion Floyd Mayweather.

The photo brought about significant criticism of Kane, and the high-scoring Winnipeg winger interpreted some of the remarks that came back at him as racism.

"I think a good portion of (criticism) is because I'm black and I'm not afraid to say so," Kane told The Hockey News in a story that is scheduled to appear in the publication March 4 (through TheSportingNews.com).

Kane, 21, seems to be confusing personal criticism with a racial attack. Posing with a stack of money is crass under any circumstances, but when it's a young athlete seemingly flaunting his riches while others suffer during an economic downturn, it's as if he has invited a firestorm of criticism.

The public forum of social media is similar to swimming in a blood-infused ocean in shark-infested waters under the best of circumstances. When you invite public criticism the way Kane did, you are going to get torn to pieces.

But while Kane's point may not reasonably apply to the circumstances that he put in front of the public, he raises an important question.

Does hockey have a problem with racism?

There are still relatively few African-Americans and African-Canadians playing the sport at the NHL level.

Calgary's Jarome Iginla is a superstar who will almost certainly end up in the Hall of Fame after he retires from the game. Wayne Simmonds is a solid player on the rise, who is a key part of the Philadelphia Flyers' game plan.

P.K. Subban is a talented defenseman for the Canadiens who alienates opposing players with his attitude but is capable of blasting his slap shot as few players can. Joel Ward is a savvy veteran with the Washington Capitals.

There are several other black players in hockey's minor and junior leagues. Seth Jones, the son of former NBA player Popeye Jones and an African-American, may be the top pick in the 2013 amateur draft.

Racism has reared its head on several occasions in recent years.

Those racial incidents have come from fans—usually in an anonymous setting—and those incidents are embarrassing to the sport.

When Simmonds skates in a preseason game and is taunted by a banana-throwing fan, it is ugly and unacceptable.

When Ward scored the series-winning goal in overtime of the seventh game for the Capitals against the Boston Bruins in the first round of the 2012 playoffs, a boatload of virulent racist remarks were directed at Ward.

While there is nothing to suggest that any hockey official was anything but embarrassed over these incidents, that's not enough.

Hockey stepped to the forefront of social leadership in sports with the "You Can Play" public service announcements, in which star players reflected the attitude that an individual's sexuality would have nothing to do with a player's ability to compete on the ice.

At the very least, the NHL could come forth with a series of PSAs pointing out that racism cannot be tolerated at any level in the sport.

A failure to do so would be akin to the leadership placing its head deep in the sand and is not acceptable.

This column began way back in September of 2007. The Swiss bus accident on 13 March 2012: lessons for pre-hospital care

Helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) are a limited and expensive resource and their possible effect on outcomes for trauma patients remain a subject of debate (2). In this incident it was a blessing to have such a well organized system in Switzerland, which proved that it can provide a number of 7 physician staffed helicopters on scene in less than 60 minutes at night.

This is my favorite cinematic trope of all time.

angerfork asked:

So is there a set-in lore reason for the varied strengths of the different Shas? I know there is something to gameplay considerations, but it's hard for me to see a 5 man take down the Sha of Violence when the Shas of Anger and Crayola/Fear take so many more. Is it just based on how we feed into their energy?

It's 100% gameplay. It also helps to remember that our characters are basically superheroes at this point, but, yeah. Gameplay.

Are you a rare?

Are you a rare
Inspired by a thread we found on the EU forums, which in turn is inspired by a thread on the US forums, WoW Insider began thinking about rare class-race combinations. It's interesting, really, in a world where you can be anything, how many people all choose to be the same thing. Doubtless, there are reasons behind it, more than just preference. Racial skills, for example, are likely a huge influence, but maybe others surface, as, with a little investigation, excluding Pandaren as they're very new, it seems that the three least popular races are also the ones that don't show off transmogs so well, and are perhaps less conventionally "pretty": gnomes, goblins and dwarves.

We headed over to RealmPop to check out their statistics and see what was the most popular and what was the least. Of course, no resource is completely perfect, and a few sites exist, but alas, the other well-known resource, WarcraftRealms, was offline. Looking at the US statistics, the least popular race, including pandaren, but by a narrow margin is the dwarf. The EU stats tell a very similar story, with dwarves outpaced by everyone, even pandaren. Why is that?

So, it makes sense that dwarves make up the race element of some of the rarest race-class combinations. Notably, however, although their total numbers are higher overall, the huge proportion of pandaren monks (64-65%) means that they're among the very rarest of combinations when playing anything but a monk.

Hit the break for the top 15 underplayed class-race combinations! Or should that be the bottom 15?

TomTom to supply maps to Intel's Telmap, creates a total navigation app package

TomTom to supply map data to Intel's Telmap, create a whole navigation package

Intel scored access to code for location-based services when it acquired Telmap, but it didn't get the all-important location data needed to make the code sing. Rather than leave developers to find the content themselves, Telmap has struck a deal to get mapping information from TomTom. Navigation apps built around Telmap's work will soon have access both to TomTom's base maps as well as 3D maps, junctions, points of interest and voice mapping. While there's no mention of exactly when TomTom data will show up, the union is characterized as a "long-term partnership" -- we'd expect TomTom routing to quickly become a mainstay of Telmap's platforms (and potentially Intel's) in the near future.

Food Choices Can Be Child's Play With Smarter Lunchrooms

In January 2012, the United States Department of Agriculture passed a series of regulations designed to make school lunches more nutritious, which included requiring schools to increase whole grain offerings and making students select either a fruit or vegetable with their purchased lunch. However, children cannot be forced to eat these healthier lunches. In a new study scheduled for publication in The Journal of Pediatrics, researchers determined that small, inexpensive changes to school cafeterias influenced the choice and consumption of healthier foods. Apple reaches settlement with parents over in-app purchases

Parents whose children purchased in-app items for real money without them knowing are going to receive compensation from Apple. As reported by GigaOM, the company has reached a settlement today in a class action lawsuit filed against it in 2011, and will issue a US$5 iTunes gift card to those who make a claim. If the claim is for more than $5, Apple will add a credit to the person's account, while claims over $30 will be paid in cash.

The suit was originally brought against Apple by a Pennsylvania man named Garen Meguerian, whose daughter racked up more than $200 in in-app purchases without his knowledge. For its part, Apple sought to limit such purchases by requiring an account password to be entered for each IAP. In the suit, Meguerian suggested that a second, different password be required for IAPs.

Under the proposed settlement, those seeking to receive payment from Apple will have their iTunes purchase histories reviewed to ensure that the purchases were actually made, and must attest that their children made the purchases without their knowledge and without being given the account password. The settlement is currently awaiting approval by a federal judge.

Daily iPad App: Thirst aggregates the news so you don't have to

Thirst is a newsreader and news-discovery app with a personalized twist. It has a magazine-like tiled layout that reminds me of Flipboard. Each tile is a news category and the default homescreen includes a broad range of categories like sports, politics and tech. You can narrow these categories down based on your interests.

The app breaks away from other newsreaders by relying on an intelligent search feature to find news articles instead of an RSS fead. Thirst uses an algorithm to search the web for articles that fit those categories you have put on your homescreen. Being an Apple fan, my Thirst homescreen has Apple, iPad, iPad mini and app categories. The content within those categories comes from a wide variety of news sources, some of which I have never encountered before.

Thirst also has a social side and includes a discussion feature that lets you write and respond to comments on those articles that you read. Like most commenting forums, the comments are as good as the people reading and responding. I saw my fair share of useless drivel and a few engaging discussions that I was happy to read. Besides commenting, users can also share articles via Facebook or Twitter.

I'm a longtime RSS user and have to admit that I was skeptical about Thirst at first. The app won me over when it used its intelligent search to pull up new and interesting articles that I never would have read if I had only browsed through my favorite RSS feeds.

Thirst is available for free from the iOS App Store. It's worth a download just to checkout the news-discovery feature of the app. Use it long enough and you might find that you have become hooked on this search-based way of reading the news.

Video: Take a look inside Koenigsegg's headquarters and peek at its future tech

The YouTube series Drive has been doing weekly videos on Koenigsegg, and in this latest they get into the Free Valve technology being developed by Swedish company Cargine AB and Koenigsegg. Free Valve uses a small, individual pneumatic actuator to open each valves and either air pressure or springs to close them. The setup omits the need for camshafts and the related paraphernalia, as well as increasing the programmability, precision and efficiency of valve operation. Engines using the Free Valve system can also be smaller and lighter.

It has been tested for the last two years on a Saab 9-5 wagon that's done 60,000 kilometers so far. Koenigsegg says that compared to a traditional four-cylinder engine, horsepower and torque using Free Valve go up by 30 percent each, while fuel consumption drops by 30 percent and emissions drop by 50 percent.

It won't be ready for mass production for a while yet, and even then it will probably start at the top of the automotive food chain. Nevertheless, it points to a potential new future for the internal combustion engine. Check out the video below to see it in action.

Manti Te'o: Breaking Down What Combine Performance Means for Draft Stock

If NFL hopefuls are under the magnifying glass this week, Manti Te’o is under the microscope. Fair or not, he’s the hottest topic in Indianapolis.

The NFL Scouting Combine is an opportunity for prospects to impress talent evaluators in an attempt to improve their draft stock. With the offseason issues that Te’o has been dealing with (and a national title game to forget), the embattled linebacker really needed to put on a show.

Te’o’s performance on Monday was underwhelming, but contrary to some of the opinions floating around about the linebacker’s draft stock, he really didn’t hurt himself all that badly.

With all the scrutiny Te’o has experienced, doing something special at the combine was the best way for him to prove he is worthy of first-round consideration in April. People wanted to see him put on a show, and to the disappointment of many, he was just average.

Perhaps “average” isn’t what NFL talent evaluators were hoping to see from Te’o, but as is the case with so many top prospects every year, not blowing away the competition was enough to justify negative beliefs of his on-field potential.

In reality, no one really expected Te’o to run a 4.40 40-yard dash or hammer out 40 bench press reps. The tape doesn’t lie. Te’o isn’t an exceptional athlete, and he shouldn’t have been expected to stun everyone with a massive performance in Indianapolis.

Te’o ran a 4.82 40-yard dash; it wasn’t a great time, but it wasn’t far from what was expected of him. His 4.27-second 20-yard shuttle time was sixth among linebackers, as was his 7.13-second performance in the three-cone drill.

What evaluators got from Te’o was a solid performance that didn’t shatter any records. He did enough to prove he is exactly what many expect him to be in the NFL—a run-stuffing linebacker with just enough quickness and agility to be serviceable in coverage at the position.

Former general managers Mike Tannenbaum and Scott Pioli weighed in on the NFL Network following his performance. Neither felt Te'o performed well short of expectations.

Te’o is a football player. Like many before him, he didn’t turn in a workout that will launch him back into the top-five discussion. Teams already know (from film and interviews) what kind of player they will be getting if they select him in April.

The biggest problem with Te’o's combine performance is this: Everyone wanted a reason to move him back up their rankings.

As unfair as it is, the scandal that captivated so many in recent months was reason to doubt a player previously regarded as one of the best in this draft class. Off-field issues like the one Te’o encountered shouldn’t demolish a player’s draft stock, and people know that. Everyone wanted him to take to the field in Indianapolis and give us all a reason to once against become enamored with his pro potential.

In the end, Te’o’s performance in team interviews and psychological evaluations will have more of an impact on his draft stock than anything else. Scouts and general managers know what to expect from him on the field, and a subpar combine performance won’t change that.

In the end, Te'o still has the potential to be a top-20 pick on draft day. He could fall into the final third of the first round, but that was already the expectation heading into the combine. He may not carry top-five value anymore, but don't expect him to slide out of the first round.

WRUP: It's the final countdown!

Editor's Note: Mr. Gray doesn't know how to read a calendar. There's another week left before the patch!

The new patch is here. You might say that this weekend is the final countdown. (Da da dahhh dahhh.) So when we talked to your intrepid WoW Insider staff, we asked what they most enjoyed about patch 5.1... and what they least enjoyed about patch 5.1. It's a mixed bag, after all.

Anne Stickney (@Shadesogrey) I'm not sure what I'm doing this weekend -- likely writing along with working on alts to level the new guild. Best part of 5.1? Easily the lore in the Dominance Offensive/Operation Shieldwall stuff. I loved doing those quests, and they did a fantastic job of keeping the story moving along. Worst part? Well there was that time my guild went splat. We're back together and doing great now, however -- so I guess you could tack that onto the "best" answer as well.

Officers' Quarters: Don't start from scratch

Officers' Quarters Don't start from scratch MONDAY
Every Monday, Scott Andrews contributes Officers' Quarters, a column about the ins and outs of guild leadership. He is the author of The Guild Leader's Handbook.

Something in human nature relishes the concept of "starting from scratch." Is it the blank slate that excites us? Is it the opportunity to let go of the past and forge a new destiny for ourselves? Is it the joy of creating versus the tedium of maintaining?

In any event, I've received a lot of emails lately about this idea. Players have written me expressing a desire to create a new account or get a name change and then create a new guild on a new realm where they will be the guild leader. Usually it's a lone person or a duo.

To all of these people, my most sincere advice is this: don't.

And if you have no experience with leadership, especially don't.

First I will explain why this is a bad idea. Then, because I hate to discourage anyone from taking up a leadership role (the game always needs more of you), I will give a few words of advice about how you should approach it. Finally, I will offer an alternative that may work out better for you in the long run. Read on if you want to know!

ASUS FonePad official: 7-inch tablet with phone functionality, priced at $249 (hands-on)

ASUS FonePad official 7inch tablet with phone functionality, priced at $249 for 16GB handson

We already knew ASUS was prepping a product called the FonePad, a 7-inch tablet with built-in phone functionality (yes, just like the new Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0). Well, ASUS just formally unveiled it here at Mobile World Congress, which means we've got a few more details to share than we did previously. First off, the speculation about its specs was all true: this does indeed have an Intel processor -- a 1.2GHz Atom Z2420, to be exact -- along with 1GB of RAM, a PowerVR SGX540 GPU, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and an HSPA+ radio. What's more, the 4,270mAH battery is said to get up to nine hours of runtime, which would put this in the same league as other Atom tablets we've tested recently.

In terms of hardware features, the FonePad has a smooth metal back (available in gray and gold), making it drastically different in appearance from the similarly sized Nexus 7. 'Round back you'll find a panel where all the usual antennae are, and hidden underneath are both the micro-SIM slot and the microSD reader. That microSD slot, by the way, supports 32GB cards, which should come in handy considering this has just 16GB of built-in storage. Additionally, the tablet has a 3-megapixel rear shooter and a 1.2-megapixel front camera, attached to a 7-inch, 1,280 x 800 IPS display.

The FonePad will be available in Europe for £179 / €219. Here at MWC, ASUS also confirmed a US dollar price of $249, though we had heard rumblings it wouldn't actually be sold there. In any case, the on-sale date will be confirmed at some later time. We're hoping to test one ourselves soon enough, but until then, stay tuned for the usual round of hands-on shots.

Update: Our hands-on photos and video are in! Enjoy!

Review of Dawn of the Aspects, part one by Richard A. Knaak

Review of Dawn of the Aspects, part one by Richard A Knaak
Everything we know about the formation of the Aspects is wrong. Well, not wrong -- but so far from what is truth that the reality of the situation is a dizzying puzzle that has only begun to be addressed. Dawn of the Aspects is a puzzle within a puzzle within a puzzle, and part one of the tale has only just begun to unravel these pieces into what will hopefully be a coherent whole by the end of the story.

While we've had hints and suggestions as to how the Aspects and the varying dragonflights came to be, it's never been truly defined. And when we made our trip to Northrend in Wrath of the Lich King, the proto-drakes found roaming the peaks and valleys of the continent were an intriguing puzzle. How did dragonkind make that leap from proto-drake to dragon? Who was Galakrond, and how did his existence tie into the existing dragonflights? Was he the father of all dragonkind in a literal sense, or in a far more figurative fashion?

Perhaps most importantly, at the dawn of the Age of Mortals, does any of this information really matter at all? If you're at all interested in the history of Azeroth, the answer is a resounding yes.
