FBI releases its first iPhone app: Child ID

The FBI has released it first iPhone app called Child ID. As the name suggests, Child ID works as a kind of digital passport for information about your children. With it you can store their photos along with physical identifiers such as height and weight. The app has several intended uses, the first a which is as something you can quickly show a security official to help identify your child if they go missing, say at an airport or a theme park. The app also has allows you to call 911 with the tap of a button and also call the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. You can also choose to email your child's information to authorities.

For those of you worried over privacy concerns, the FBI states on its website that the app does not collect or store any photos or information you enter into the phone. Everything resides locally on your iPhone until you choose to send that information to the authorities. Child ID is a great start, but one issue I had with the app is that there is no way to set a passcode on it. If you're storing information that could identify your children, it would be nice to lock the app should it fall into the wrong hands.

Child ID is a free download for the iPhone, and the FBI says it will be coming to other mobile devices in the future.

Tiger Woods: Desperately Searching for the Most Important Victory of His Life

I'm sure Tiger Woods would tell you if he ever had a moment where he actually laid his cards on the table, that if he could win any one tournament right now, it would be the most important win of his life.

Simply because it would start to give him his life back by ending a victory drought that has gone on for more than two years.

Actually, the only thing Tiger Woods can do to bring his whole life back into focus is win a golf tournament.

He doesn't need any more shaky PR moves, a new coach, a new caddie or a new girlfriend.

He just needs to win a golf tournament.

But as odd as it may seem, the man who was once able to win almost at will, and by enormous margins with unparalleled excellence of play, now cannot win, or even come close to doing so in the most important tournament of his life.

The first comeback win still eludes him and so does his reconnection with anything even remotely resembling his once astronomical levels of fame and fortune.

He has the look not of a champion but of a beaten man on the run.

And what's chasing him?

What's hunting Tiger Woods down?

It's his old image.

He's being haunted now by the legend he created, destroyed and now cannot get back.

He's being stalked by the Tiger Woods who was going to stand triumphantly in the sun one day with the trophy from his 19th major.

He's being followed now, up and down every fairway and into the rough and trees by the Tiger Woods that could have been.

And he just can't shake him off.

China loses partial access to Windows Phone 7 Marketplace, Great Firewall to be blamed?

It's a well-known fact that China's Great Firewall isn't particularly friendly with certain foreign online services, and sadly, it appears that we may now have a new victim joining the likes of Facebook, Twitter and, sometimes, Android Market. According to Windows Phone Sauce blogger Kane Gao, many Windows Phone 7 users in China have had limited access to the Marketplace over the last few days -- they can't download any app, but they can still browse content and receive update notifications.

While Microsoft's service has yet to go live in China, Chinese users could still purchase apps by changing all of their profile location settings to the US. Alas, this trick is of no use now, though it's unlikely that Microsoft's the culprit here -- it wouldn't make sense to block genuine US users who are visiting China. Fortunately, Kane had no problem getting to the Marketplace via a US VPN, which is a big tell-tale sign showing that the Great Firewall has decided to barricade WP7's very own app market. The reason? We'll never know, and there's no telling on whether this is a permanent ban, either. Nokia, being a big player in the country, sure hopes not.

[Thanks, JagsLive and Rahul]

Around Azeroth: Once in a blue moon

Many people have seen this primitive painting on a rock near Thunder Bluff. The horse is pretty standard for this sort of thing, although a little out of place -- since when have there been horses in Mulgore? But what about those hoofprints off to the left? As always, Mad Men has the answer. I was rewatching the first season on Netflix the other night and caught this little vignette between Harry Crane and Don Draper regarding the Lascaux cave paintings.

Harry: The bison get all the attention, but there are also all of these handprints. Tiny by today's standards, with paint blown all around them.
Don: Signature of the artist.
Harry: But I thought it was... like someone reaching through the stone, right to us. "I was here."

The walking cows were here. (Thanks to Dactyl for the screenshot!)

Betty Ford Dead at 93

LOS ANGELES, California - The former first lady whose triumph over drug and alcohol addiction became a beacon of hope for addicts and the inspiration for her Betty Ford Center in California, died at age 93, a family friend said late Friday.

Her death Friday was confirmed to The Associated Press by Marty Allen, chairman emeritus of the Ford Foundation. Family spokeswoman Barbara Lewandrowski said later that the former first lady died at the Eisenhower Medical Center in Palm Springs. Other details of her death were not immediately available.

"She was a wonderful wife and mother; a great friend; and a courageous First Lady," former President George H.W. Bush said in a statement on Friday. "No one confronted life's struggles with more fortitude or honesty, and as a result, we all learned from the challenges she faced."

While her husband served as president, Ford's comments weren't the kind of genteel, innocuous talk expected from a first lady, and a Republican one no less. Her unscripted comments sparked tempests in the press and dismayed President Gerald Ford's advisers, who were trying to soothe the national psyche after Watergate. But to the scandal-scarred, Vietnam-wearied, hippie-rattled nation, Mrs. Ford's openness was refreshing.

And 1970s America loved her for it.

According to Mrs. Ford, her young adult children probably had smoked marijuana — and if she were their age, she'd try it, too. She told "60 Minutes" she wouldn't be surprised to learn that her youngest, 18-year-old Susan, was in a sexual relationship (an embarrassed Susan issued a denial).

She mused that living together before marriage might be wise, thought women should be drafted into the military if men were, and spoke up unapologetically for abortion rights, taking a position contrary to the president's. "Having babies is a blessing, not a duty," Mrs. Ford said.

"Mother's love, candor, devotion, and laughter enriched our lives and the lives of the millions she touched throughout this great nation," her family said in a statement released late Friday. "To be in her presence was to know the warmth of a truly great lady."

Candor worked for Betty Ford, again and again. She would build an enduring legacy by opening up the toughest times of her life as public example.

In an era when cancer was discussed in hushed tones and mastectomy was still a taboo subject, the first lady shared the specifics of her breast cancer surgery. The publicity helped bring the disease into the open and inspired countless women to seek breast examinations.

Her most painful revelation came 15 months after leaving the White House, when Mrs. Ford announced that she was entering treatment for a longtime addiction to painkillers and alcohol. It turned out the famously forthcoming first lady had been keeping a secret, even from herself.

She used the unvarnished story of her own descent and recovery to crusade for better addiction treatment, especially for women. She co-founded the nonprofit Betty Ford Center near the Fords' home in Rancho Mirage, Calif., in 1982. Mrs. Ford raised millions of dollars for the center, kept close watch over its operations, and regularly welcomed groups of new patients with a speech that started, "Hello, my name's Betty Ford, and I'm an alcoholic and drug addict."

Although most famous for a string of celebrity patients over the years — from Elizabeth Taylor and Johnny Cash to Lindsay Lohan — the center keeps its rates relatively affordable and has served more than 90,000 people.

In a statement Friday, President Barack Obama said the Betty Ford Center would honor Mrs. Ford's legacy "by giving countless Americans a new lease on life."

"As our nation's First Lady, she was a powerful advocate for women's health and women's rights," the president said. "After leaving the White House, Mrs. Ford helped reduce the social stigma surrounding addiction and inspired thousands to seek much-needed treatment."

Mrs. Ford was a free spirit from the start. Elizabeth Bloomer, born April 8, 1918, fell in love with dance as a girl in Grand Rapids, Mich., and decided it would be her life. At 20, despite her mother's misgivings, she moved to New York to learn from her idol Martha Graham. She lived in Greenwich Village, worked as a model, and performed at Carnegie Hall in Graham's modern dance ensemble. "I thought I had arrived," she later recalled.

But her mother coaxed her back to Grand Rapids, where Betty worked as a dance teacher and store fashion coordinator and married William Warren, a friend from school days. He was a salesman who traveled frequently; she was unhappy. They lasted five years.

While waiting for her divorce to become final, she met and began dating, as she put it in her memoir, "probably the most eligible bachelor in Grand Rapids" — former college football star, Navy veteran and lawyer Jerry Ford. They would be married for 58 years, until his death in December 2006.

Two weeks after their October 1948 wedding, her husband was elected to his first term in the House. He would serve 25 years, rising to minority leader.

While her husband campaigned for weeks at a time or worked late on Capitol Hill, she raised their four children: Michael, Jack, Steven and Susan. She arranged luncheons for congressional wives, helped with her husband's campaigns, became a Cub Scout den mother, taught Sunday school.

A pinched nerve in her neck in 1964, followed by the onset of severe osteoarthritis, led her to an assortment of prescription drugs that never fully relieved the pain. For years she had been what she later called "a controlled drinker, no binges." Now she began mixing pills and alcohol. Feeling overwhelmed and underappreciated, she suffered an emotional breakdown that led to weekly visits with a psychiatrist.

The psychiatrist didn't take note of her drinking but instead tried to build her self-esteem: "He said I had to start thinking I was valuable, not just as a wife and mother, but as myself."

The White House would give her that gift.

In 1973, as Mrs. Ford was happily anticipating her husband's retirement from politics, Vice President Spiro Agnew was forced out of office over bribery charges. President Richard Nixon turned to Gerald Ford to fill the office.

Less than a year later, his presidency consumed by the Watergate scandal, Nixon resigned. On Aug. 9, 1974, Gerald Ford was sworn in as the only chief executive in American history who hadn't been elected either president or vice president.

Mrs. Ford wrote of her sudden ascent to first lady: "It was like going to a party you're terrified of, and finding out to your amazement that you're having a good time."

She was 56 when she moved into the White House, and looked more matronly than mod. Ever gracious, her chestnut hair carefully coifed into a soft bouffant, she tended to speak softly and slowly, even when taking a feminist stand.

Her breast cancer diagnosis, coming less than two months after President Ford was whisked into office, may have helped disarm the clergymen, conservative activists and Southern politicians who were most inflamed by her loose comments. She was photographed recovering at Bethesda Naval Hospital, looking frail in her robe, and won praise for grace and courage.

"She seems to have just what it takes to make people feel at home in the world again," media critic Marshall McLuhan observed at the time. "Something about her makes us feel rooted and secure — a feeling we haven't had in a while. And her cancer has been a catharsis for everybody."

The public outpouring of support helped her embrace the power of her position. "I was somebody, the first lady," she wrote later. "When I spoke, people listened."

She used her newfound influence to lobby aggressively for the Equal Rights Amendment, which failed nonetheless, and to speak against child abuse, raise money for handicapped children, and champion the performing arts.

It's debatable whether Mrs. Ford's frank nature helped or hurt her husband's 1976 campaign to win a full term as president. Polls showed she was widely admired. By taking positions more liberal than the president's, she helped broaden his appeal beyond traditional Republican voters. But she also outraged some conservatives, leaving the president more vulnerable to a strong GOP primary challenge by Ronald Reagan. That battle weakened Ford going into the general election against Democrat Jimmy Carter.

Carter won by a slim margin. The president had lost his voice in the campaign's final days, and it was Mrs. Ford who read his concession speech to the nation.

The Fords retired to a Rancho Mirage golf community, but he spent much of his time away, giving speeches and playing in golf tournaments. Home alone, deprived of her exciting and purposeful life in the White House, Mrs. Ford drank.

By 1978 her secret was obvious to those closest to her.

"As I got sicker," she recalled, "I gradually stopped going to lunch. I wouldn't see friends. I was putting everyone out of my life." Her children recalled her living in a stupor, shuffling around in her bathrobe, refusing meals in favor of a drink.

Her family finally confronted her and insisted she seek treatment.

"I was stunned at what they were trying to tell me about how I disappointed them and let them down," she said in a 1994 Associated Press interview. "I was terribly hurt — after I had spent all those years trying to be the best mother, wife I could be. ... Luckily, I was able to hear them saying that I needed help and they cared too much about me to let it go on."

She credited their "intervention" with saving her life.

Mrs. Ford entered Long Beach Naval Hospital and, alongside alcoholic young sailors and officers, underwent a grim detoxification that became the model for therapy at the Betty Ford Center. In her book "A Glad Awakening," she described her recovery as a second chance at life.

And in that second chance, she found a new purpose.

"There is joy in recovery," she wrote, "and in helping others discover that joy."

Family spokeswoman Lewanbrowski the family expects to organize a service in Palm Springs over the next couple days. Ford's body will be sent to Michigan for burial alongside former President Gerald Ford, who is buried at his namesake library in Grand Rapids.

The Queue: Mists of the Naaru

Welcome back to The Queue, the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Mathew McCurley will be your host today. Click my name! It won't hurt ... FOR LONG!

You know who I miss? The naaru. What's up with our wind chime friends? Are they all on vacation from fighting the Legion? I don't think I've spoken to a naaru since I helped out old crusader What's-His-Face in Icecrown, dying his slow and painful death just moments away from the fun and merriment of the Argent Tournament. More naaru! I hope the next expansion is called Mists of the Naaru and we get playable naaru because naaaaarrrrrruuuuuuuuuuuuuu ...

Joe Girardi Finally Gets It Right, Shows Jorge Posada the Respect He Deserves

According to Anthony Rieber of Newsday, Yankees manager Joe Girardi has informed Jorge Posada that he will be a bench player for the foreseeable future, choosing to slide Eric Chavez into the role of left-handed designated hitter.

Unlike the situation in May, when Girardi benched Posada but didn't tell him until the beloved veteran got to the ballpark, Girardi and Posada spoke at length about his future with the club.

Posada is taking the demotion in stride and with class.

"He (Girardi) said he was going to put the best lineup on the field, and he doesn't know when I'm going to DH again. So right now I'm sitting the bench...I'm not happy about it, but right now I can't do anything about it. I put myself in this situation. You just have to keep on working."

Girardi's remarks were respectful of what Posada has done and what he means to the team:

"He was OK with it, Jorgie has a lot of respect and pride in what he's done. You could see the disappointment and understand that.

As for Posada's future with the club—while many will speculate that this move sets up a promotion of Jesus Montero from Triple-A to the Bronx before rosters expand on September 1, but I wouldn't be so quick to rush to judgement.

Girardi told Posada "You're still going to be a big part of this and we're going to need you. We're just going to do some different things..

As for Montero, Girardi intimated that if Montero does join the big club, it won't be as a catcher, which begs the question—what position does Girardi see Montero playing?

To bring up a highly-touted prospect, albeit one whose star has diminished some this season, to do nothing but be a part-time DH seems counter-productive to his continued development.

Then again, so is keeping him in Triple-A where he seemingly is disinterested and has nothing left to prove.

"Jorgie's with us, and my plans are he'll be with us" remarked Girardi.

Perhaps both Girardi and Posada have grown up a bit since May.

Maybe—just maybe—what at one time seemed destined to end in embarrassing fashion for all parties involved will finish in a civilized manner.

Jorge Posada deserves to finish the year with the Yankees—the only team he has ever known—then ride off into the sunset.

Anything less would be uncivilized.

DollyCam app lets you stabilize iPhone 4 videos, we go hands-on (video)

Apple's iPhone 4 can serve as a great little camcorder when you're in a bind, but it's never been our go-to cam for video shoots. Not only is its small sensor not best suited for high-quality HD shooting, but the smartphone form factor can be awkward to hold, resulting in shakier than normal footage. A new app called DollyCam, which also supports iPad 2, helps soften the blow of the latter, letting you successfully stabilize videos -- with a few drawbacks.

We took our iPhone 4 out to test a watermarked free version of the app in New York City, shooting a scene first with the phone's native app, and then with DollyCam. It won't replace a hardware solution like the Steadicam Smoothee, but it's significantly cheaper and more convenient. The only major issues we noticed were related to softened sound capture of all things (pay close attention in the video past the break), and the fact that the app can't process in real-time, so a minute-long video clip will need about five minutes to process. The app does crop your footage slightly, as can be expected. You'll also need to remain in the app as it's processing, though you can also stabilize videos later, after completing your shoot. Overall, it's an acceptable solution, especially considering the $2.99 price tag. Jump past the break to see original and stabilized clips, and browse through the gallery below for a quick look at the interface.
[Thanks, Jon]

Cambridge researchers tout new location-based method to predict friends on social networks

Friend suggestions on social networks may already be a little too eerily accurate for some, but a team of researchers from Cambridge University now say they can do one better. They've devised a method that doesn't simply rely the usual friends-of-friends approach, but on where those people tend to hang out. According to researcher Salvatore Scellato, "it turns out that the properties of the places we interact can determine how likely we are to develop social ties," and that places like offices and gyms are better indications of potential friends than football stadiums or airports. That notion was borne out in their research (conducted over a period of four months using Gowalla), which found that "about 30 percent of all new social links appear among users that check-in to the same places." With the two prediction methods combined, the researchers say they're able to account for 66 percent of all new social ties. No word if they've moved onto predicting crimes next.

Addon Spotlight: Adding on to the Blizzard Raid Frames

Each week, WoW Insider's Mathew McCurley brings you a fresh look at reader-submitted UIs as well as Addon Spotlight, which focuses on the backbone of the WoW gameplay experience: the user interface. Everything from bags to bars, buttons to DPS meters and beyond -- your addons folder will never be the same.

One of the great joys of writing Addon Spotlight is watching the evolution of addons and their relationship to World of Warcraft over time and how the effectiveness and usefulness of certain addons wanes and waxes like the phases of the moon. Blizzard's new raid frames have not replaced my own custom job, but they have been getting progressively closer to a complete package, as I discussed only a few weeks ago. But there are ways, friends, of adding on to even the Blizzard default raid frame setup to give them just a bit more substance.

Today, I've got three little additions to the default Blizzard raid frames that can help you with targets, marks, and debuffs. If you like options, these addons will add a ton of them to the Blizzard standard setup, making the entire package look a little more like Grid. So sit back, relax, and check out these new additions to the Blizzard default raid frames.

UFC 133 Live Results & Aftermath for Rashad Evans vs. Tito Ortiz

Maybe Rashad Evans camp was telling the truth when they said that he was fighting hurt in his 2007 encounter with Tito Ortiz.

Tons of "Tito!" chants filled the arena early, which possibly helped Ortiz score on his first double-leg attempt.

However, once "Suga" got back to his feet, it was all downhill for "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy."

Evans drilled Ortiz with a huge standing double-leg takedown, and followed up by some solid ground and pound.

Ortiz came extremely close with an arm in guillotine a la Ryan Bader, but Evans gets him into half guard and eventually pops his head out.

After surviving some more ground and pound for Evans, Ortiz went for a sloppy knee bar that wasn't even close, and that was the beginning of the end in a battle of former light heavyweight champions.

Ortiz looked like he was about to get back to his feet finally after getting ridden in side control for a couple minutes, but Evans lands a vicious knee to the body which caused Ortiz to drop down on all fours.

Evans then ended the fight with some ground and pound with less than 20 seconds remaining in the second round.

Afterwards, Ortiz surprisingly gave Evans a ton of credit for the win, calling him the better man on this occasion.

Ortiz is a mere 1-4(1) in his past six fights, but made it clear that he plans to fight again.  Finding Ortiz's next opponent could be a head scratcher as it seems that he cannot hang with the light heavyweight division's elite anymore.

Perhaps a rematch with Matt Hamill in a loser leaves town type of scenario is a realistic possibility.

As far as Evans, he solidified himself as the next in line for a title shot likely in early 2012.

The current 205-pound champion, Jon Jones, defends the belt against Quinton "Rampage" Jackson next month at UFC 135.

TUAW's Daily Mac App: Mac Screen Rotate

Mac Screen Rotate's goal is to bring a bit of iPad functionality to the MacBook Air by enabling you to hold the laptop on its side and have the screen rotate to a vertical orientation. While the site markets it as a way to "read" your MacBook Air like a real book, the result is cumbersome. MacBook Airs have just enough heft to where holding them in this position for any length of time is annoying.

Where a program such as Mac Screen Rotate comes in handy is if you're wanting to show off a vertical photo, graphic design or spreadsheet. It would come in handy for certain niches that work in these particular fields and gives you a bit more room to show off a document without having to compensate for the narrow horizontal screen.

Then there's also the fact that you can do this for free in OS X. Go into System Preferences and hold down the option and command keys while selecting the Displays tab. This reveals a rotation menu that allows you to rotate your screen. However, what it doesn't do is rotate the trackpad's functionality as well, which makes for awkward maneuvering indeed, and this is how Mac Screen Rotate sets itself off from the free offering. The developers of Mac Screen Rotate also detail the free process on their site, and kudos to them for doing this.

Does it work though? Yes, very well. The trackpad behaves as expected in vertical mode and recognizes most of the Lion gestures, though it's very apparent that these gestures were made for a horizontal-oriented trackpad rather than vertical. The gestures work, but even with my small hand it was difficult to do some of the more complicated gestures.

If you fall into the niche that would most likely take advantage of this, Mac Screen Rotate is $4.99 with a 3-day trial, but is currently on sale for $3.99.

Needham & Co. raises price target for AAPL

The stock market has been tanking all week, but that's not keeping financial firm Needham & Co. from being bullish on Apple. The company raised its price target for AAPL from US$450 to $540.

So why the big jump? Needham's Charlie Wolf notes that the firm adjusted how it values Apple's different businesses and product lines. The iPad, for example, is now estimated to contribute about 12.2 percent to the value of Apple stock. That's up from the previous estimate, based on a new assumption that the iPad will continue to capture a larger share of the tablet market that Needham initially thought.

The Mac is also adding to the party, thanks in part to a halo effect from the iPad. As more buyers become entranced with the iPad, they're more likely to purchase Macs in the future. The Mac product line is now valued at about 11.8 percent of AAPL's value. Likewise, iTunes has been bumped in importance as a contributing factor to the stock price (now 5.1 percent) thanks to the growth of the App Store.

The biggest contributor? The iPhone, which provides almost 49.2 percent of the value of each share of Apple stock or about $266. That's also seen as a risk factor, since even a small decrease in growth of iPhone sales could have a huge impact on Apple stock price.

Last but not least, Apple's cash hoard adds to the stock price value, contributing about 14.8 percent of the value. However you look at Apple, the company's performance in troubled financial times has so far been nothing less than stellar.

Apple reportedly hires firm to help replace former retail chief Ron Johnson

Apple has hired recruiting firm Egon Zehnder International to find a replacement for Apple Retail Chief Ron Johnson, who is leaving the company after eleven years to become the president and eventual CEO of J.C. Penney. According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple is intentionally seeking our a replacement from abroad and Egon Zehnder's services were obtained on the orders of none other than Steve Jobs.

Egon Zehnder was apparently chosen because Jobs is looking for an executive with retail experience outside the US.

Apple has repeatedly said that their international expansion is a driving force in both their profits and sales. Given that China, a country which Apple had virtually no presence in until very recently, seems key to Apple's growth, its likely that Ron Johnson's replacement could very well come from the Asia Pacific territory or someone with extensive knowledge and experience in the territory.

Male infertility may soon be a thing of the past according to mice. This week new research has been released that Japanese scientists have used laboratory-made sperm, using embryonic cells, to restore fertility in sterile mice. This may open up new avenues for researching and treating infertility in people. For example, men may be able to reprogram cells from the skin to act like sperm producing entities. Read on for details. Historically, researchers have tried for years to make sperm and eggs in a dish, with limited success and some controversy...

Dev Juice: What's the deal with k for constants?

Dear Dev Juice,

What's the deal with the k in #define kFilename. Is it German? Does it stand for konstant? What gives?

Pure Fusion

Dear Pure Fusion,

The k prefix seems to originate in a naming system called Hungarian Notation, developed by Charles Simonyi at Xerox PARC. The idea behind this system is that the name of a variable should reflect its semantics.

Wikipedia offers a sense of these naming conventions, such as arru8NumberList, meaning the variable is an array of unsigned 8-bit integers.

Apple follows a similar but more practical convention. Like the original Hungarian Notation, it encodes opaque types, but it does so with a distinctly Apple spin and without all the silly made up non-obvious naming bits like "arru8".

As you've already noted, Apple's "k" prefix indicates constants. Typically, the k prefix is followed by type, followed by a more general indication of the item's use. A typical Apple symbol, such as kCFCharacterSetWhitespace can easily be broken down as k (constant) + CFCharacterSet (opaque type) + Whitespace (unique role).

Hungarian Notation's goal of encoding semantics into symbols has gone in and out of fashion over time. Some devs love it, others hate it. Most fall in the middle, as does Apple's usage.

Being able to instantly identify the role of a symbol as a constant is a win, but a mindless adherence to pedantry in unnatural naming can become a stumbling block. Fortunately, Apple seems to have chosen its path well and its naming schemes are easy to follow while remaining semantically rich.

Happy developing!

Google accuses Apple and Microsoft of teaming up to strangle Android

David Drummond, Senior VP and Chief Legal Officer at Google, has posted a diatribe against Apple and Microsoft, both competitors against Google's Android platform. "Microsoft and Apple have always been at each other's throats, so when they get into bed together you have to start wondering what's going on," Drummond writes.

What's going on according to Drummond? It's "a hostile, organized campaign against Android by Microsoft, Oracle, Apple and other companies, waged through bogus patents." Some of those said "bogus" patents, it bears mentioning, were subject to a US$900 million opening bid from Google, a bid the company later lost to a consortium of companies including Apple and Microsoft. Just saying, $900 million is a lot of money to put on the table for something that's bogus.

"Patents were meant to encourage innovation, but lately they are being used as a weapon to stop it," Drummond says. I can't argue with that -- Lodsys immediately comes to mind -- but is he trying to tell us that Google would never leverage the Nortel patents against Apple and Microsoft if the bidding had gone the other way? Indeed, that seems to be exactly what he's saying when he accuses competitors of "fighting through litigation" instead of "competing by building new features or devices."

"Unless we act, consumers could face rising costs for Android devices - and fewer choices for their next phone," Drummond says. It's hard for me to read this, or the rest of Drummond's piece, without translating it thus: Google is scared.

The question is, should Google be scared? That depends on a few things: the strength of the Nortel patents, any possible regulatory intervention in the purchase of those patents, Apple and/or Microsoft's willingness to actively pursue patent claims and "strangle" Android, and finally, the courts' determination as to whether or not Google has violated those patents. It's pretty obvious on casual inspection that Google hasn't been innovating in a vacuum, however, so if Apple or Microsoft actually are intent on "strangling" the free ride Android's had so far, then maybe Google should be exactly as scared as it sounds.

Blue Angels Wow Crowd

PENSACOLA BEACH, Florida - Thousand of people hit Pensacola Beach for the annual summer aviation spectacular.

There are many reasons to see the Blue Angels in Pensacola, for many it's a tradition and for a lot of people it's a really big deal.

“It's a big deal because the blue angels are the BEST acrobatic team in the world, and I've seen a bunch even better than the Thunderbirds,” says Dontrell Wiggins from Navarre. The celebrities of Naval aviation wow a crowd of thousands in Pensacola Beach. It'll take more than bumper to bumper traffic and extreme heat to keep people away.

“What's heat when it comes to seeing airplanes do tricks like that man,” says Dylan Reed from Georgia. This is his 14th Blue Angels show and it’s also on his birthday. “Tradition just because I have so much fun every time I see the show, I've never had a bad time watching the blue angels and all the other planes fly.”

Daring stunts draw most people here--but for others it's a chance to admire America's military prowess.

“I am retired military and it lets fellow military demonstrate their skills and it's a great time,” says Carlos Lotze of Navarre Beach.
