2014 Pikes Peak Hill Climb: Final Practice Day 4 and pre-race notes

2014 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

The running order has been established for the 92nd running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb for all classes and everyone's had all the practice they're going to get. On Sunday, June 29, the 14,110-foot-high mountain will ask each of them, "Who wants some?" Unlike previous years, while the bikes will run according to class, the cars will run according to their qualifying times set on the bottom section of the course, regardless of division, the fastest guys going first.

That puts Romain Dumas at the head of the 67 car entries, having set a time of 3:37.525 in his Norma M20 RD in the Unlimited Class, but the next Unlimited entry doesn't appear until sixth, Piero Nappi in his Picchio P4 pp with a time of 4:03.357. In between them, the two Mitsubishi MiEV Evolution IIIs start second and third in the Electric Modified class, that first one driven by Greg Tracy 11 seconds behind Dumas. Then comes Monster Tajima is his E-Runner Pikes Peak Special, then Paul Dallenbach leading the Open Wheel class, four positions ahead of the next Open Wheel competitor.

Leaders in the other classes: Michael Skeen driving a Nissan GT-R in the Open class in seventh, 12 positions ahead of the next class entrant; Jeff Zwart in eighth, driving a Porsche 911, will be the first in Time Attack 1, his competition starting right behind him; Robert Prillka in 21st is the first Time Attack 2 entry in a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, three positions ahead of the next entry; in 23rd is Christopher Lennon in his 1973 Porsche 911 in the Vintage class, the next Vintage entry in 37th; the first Exhibition entrant is Donald Huffman in a Radical RXC in 50th, four positions ahead of the next in-class competition; and representing for Electric Production is Roy Richards in a Honda Fit EV.

Pikes Peak organizers will stream the event, but it requires a paid subscription to watch: $3.95 for one hour of viewing, $9.95 for three hours, $19.95 for unlimited watching and $100 for unlimited viewing and an official program. That feed also contains a cache of archival Pikes Peak footage and interviews. The site BoldRide says it is livestreaming the whole race in partnership with Erix Audio, and that appears to be free. You'll get live timing and results during the race here, and you can follow the Pikes Peak Facebook and Twitter pages for photos and quips. If you do keep up with the feed, you'll find Autoblog behind the wheel of Car #0, a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo, driving the parade lap up the mountain to open the race for the car divisions.

For a few more tidbits on the race and the Mitsubishi MiEV Evolution III, keep reading below.

What have you spent the longest time working on in WoW?

Whatever your most time-consuming WoW task, it's probably not as time-consuming as Doubleagent's recent grind up to level 90 without choosing a faction. But now that it's proven you can reach end-game levels without picking a faction -- and thus being able to leave the Wandering Isle -- will others be jumping on the bandwagon to be a max-level neutral? With 174 days /played to get there, I'm guessing no.

However, there are plenty of players who are willing to dump lots of time into getting achievements like The Insane -- and without much to do until Warlords -- maybe I'm wrong. So whether you're planning to level a neutral of your own or not, why not get talking about long-term WoW goals -- what's the task you've spent the longest on in WoW?

Wimbledon 2014 Results: Notable Scores for Day 6 Matches at All England Club

Top-seeded players continue to fall at the 2014 Wimbledon Championships.

On Friday, two more notable contenders received unfortunate early exits from the tournament, as No. 16 Fabio Fognini was upset by No. 20 Kevin Anderson, and perhaps even more surprisingly, No. 2 Na Li was defeated by Barbora Zahlavova Strycova in a marathon match.

Would more top-seeded players continue to fall Saturday?

With the Day 6 matches now in the books, let's take a look at the scores from the top contenders who took the court at the All England Club.

(2) Rafael Nadal def. Mikhail Kukushkin; 6(4)-7(7), 6-1, 6-1, 6-1

Wimbledon hasn't exactly been kind to Nadal in the past couple of years, and his struggles appeared to be continuing after dropping the first set to Kukushkin on Saturday.

Early in the match, Kukushkin ran Nadal all over the court. His pinpoint accuracy and well-timed volleys earned him the tiebreak in a lengthy opening set.

Well, that seemed to motivate Nadal, who swiftly took the following three sets with ease.

As Tennis.com notes, this is becoming a trend for Nadal:

The No. 2 seed began serving very well, winning 77 percent of both his first serves and second serves. He became very aggressive, as he won 13 of 14 net points, and his consistency allowed him to finish with just 12 unforced errors compared to his opponent's 33.

Nadal moves on to the round of 16, where he will face Nick Kyrgios in what will be the pair's first meeting.

Alize Cornet def. (1) Serena Williams; 1-6, 6-3, 6-4

In a highly dramatic twist on the day, top-seeded Williams fell to Cornet and was forced to leave yet another major tournament earlier than expected.

The No. 1 seed began things the way she left off at Wimbledon, trouncing her opponent to the tune of 6-1 in the first set.

That's where things changed.

Williams began to look uneasy and hesitant, as her posture appeared to tighten up, and her game suffered as a result. The American racked up 29 unforced errors and struggled on the volley, winning just 44 percent of receiving points and just 19 of 32 break points.

Meanwhile, Cornet was brilliant. She won 73 percent of her first-serve points and an impressive 14 of 16 net points while accumulating a respectable 18 unforced errors.

Tennis Now tweeted Cornet's mentality throughout the match:

During a press conference after the match, via Vivienne Christie of Wimbledon.com, a disappointed Williams reflected on her day:

She kept her unforced errors really low. I think I made a few errors too many. You know, she was going for her shots ... She played really well today. I think everyone in general plays the match of their lives against me. So I'm pretty sure that the next match, it won't be the same. I just have to always, every time I step on the court, be a hundred times better.

Williams will have some time to rethink her strategy before her next match, while Cornet moves on to face No. 13 Eugenie Bouchard.

(4) Roger Federer def. Santiago Giraldo; 6-3, 6-1, 6-3

Federer is now into the round of 16, and he has yet to drop a set at Wimbledon. On Saturday, he dismantled Giraldo in three sets, which took a total of just 81 minutes.

Giraldo simply had no answer for Federer. The No. 4 seed was brilliant in all aspects of his play. Both his serves and volleys were on point, as Federer recorded eight aces, won 84 percent of first serves, 15 of 23 net points and 39 percent of first-serve return points while accumulating just 14 unforced errors.

Wimbledon noted Federer's impressive victory:

This is the Federer the field should fear.

The former world No. 1 has plenty of confidence and momentum going forward. He spoke about his mentality during a press conference after the match, via Kate Battersby of Wimbledon.com:

"I'm pleased, absolutely. It's been a good first week for me. I've been playing well, feeling good. Didn't drop any sets. Wasn't really in danger in any of the matches. Got a lot of info from the first week on how I need to play moving forward."

Federer's next opponent will be No. 23 Tommy Robredo. Currently, the No. 4 seed holds a career 10-1 record against his upcoming competition.

This converted pickup explored 6,000 miles of abandoned Mexican railways

SEFT-1

There has always been something singularly romantic about train travel, what with its steady speed and constant sound. Mexican artists Ivan Puig and Andrés Padilla Domene felt the pull of the rails, but since Mexico privatized its railways in 1995, passenger travel has essentially disappeared. They didn't let that discourage them, though. Instead, they pushed ahead to create their own way to explore the country's roughly 6,000 miles of abandoned tracks.

Part art project, part oral history and part adventure, they created the SEFT-1 (pictured above), which stands for Sonda de Exploración Ferroviaria Tripulada or Manned Railway Exploration Probe. Granted, they probably could have used just about any vehicle sturdy enough to take the offroad terrain, but the two of them took the idea much further. Starting with a pickup truck, they fabricated a retrofuturist body out of aluminum and a custom interior. The retractable wheels kept it on the tracks when they were still there. The complete design looks like Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion car as rendered by Budget Flash Gordon.

Along the way, they captured their adventure in pictures, video and audio recordings to post on their website (in Spanish) and visited schools to show of the SEFT-1 and share what they had learned. Scroll down to watch a video describing their adventures.

Personalized predictive lung dosimetry by technetium-99m macroaggregated albumin SPECT/CT for yttrium-90 radioembolization

Background:
For yttrium-90 (90Y) radioembolization, the common practice of assuming a standard 1,000-g lung mass for predictive dosimetry is fundamentally incongruent with the modern philosophy of personalized medicine. We recently developed a technique of personalized predictive lung dosimetry using technetium-99m (99mTc) macroaggregated albumin (MAA) single photon emission computed tomography with integrated CT (SPECT/CT) of the lung as part of our routine dosimetric protocol for 90Y radioembolization. Its rationales are the technical superiority of SPECT/CT over planar scintigraphy, ease and convenience of lung auto-segmentation CT densitovolumetry, and dosimetric advantage of patient-specific lung parenchyma masses.
Methods:
This is a retrospective study of our pulmonary clinical outcomes and comparison of lung dosimetric accuracy and precision by 99mTc MAA SPECT/CT versus conventional planar methodology. 90Y resin microspheres (SIR-Spheres) were used for radioembolization. Diagnostic CT densitovolumetry was used as a reference for lung parenchyma mass. Pulmonary outcomes were based on follow-up diagnostic CT chest or X-ray.
Results:
Thirty patients were analyzed. The mean lung parenchyma mass of our Southeast Asian cohort was 822???103?g standard deviation (95% confidence interval 785 to 859?g). Patient-specific lung parenchyma mass estimation by CT densitovolumetry on 99mTc MAA SPECT/CT is accurate (bias ?21.7?g) and moderately precise (95% limits of agreement ?194.6 to +151.2?g). Lung mean radiation absorbed doses calculated by 99mTc MAA SPECT/CT and planar methodology are both accurate (bias <0.5?Gy), but 99mTc MAA SPECT/CT offers better precision over planar methodology (95% limits of agreement ?1.76 to +2.40?Gy versus ?3.48 to +3.31?Gy, respectively). None developed radiomicrosphere pneumonitis when treated up to a lung mean radiation absorbed dose of 18?Gy at a median follow-up of 4.4?months. Conclusions: Personalized predictive lung dosimetry by 99mTc MAA SPECT/CT is clinically feasible, safe, and more precise than conventional planar methodology for 90Y radioembolization radiation planning.

2014 Pikes Peak Hill Climb: Practice Day 3

2014 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

Greg Tracy's MiEV Evolution III topped the time sheets almost 14 seconds ahead of third-place Monster Tajima.

On Thursday, qualifying times for six categories were set on the bottom-section switchbacks of Pikes Peak: Electric Modified - near-unlimited showcases of electric-vehicle engineering; Electric Production - electric vehicles "readily available to the public;" Open Wheel - single engine, open wheeled, open cockpit, single seat vehicles; Open - based upon a production or approved-aftermarket-replica vehicle; Exhibition - a prototype or pre-production vehicle limited to one year of eligibility in this class; and Vintage - vehicles and drivelines from 1990 or earlier.

The big story was Greg Tracy in his MiEV Evolution III topping the time sheets almost 14 seconds ahead of third-placed Nobuhiro 'Monster' Tajima, with the second MiEV Evolution III driven by Hiroshi Masuoka about three seconds behind Tracy. The Mitsus also lined up in the first two positions last year with Monster Tajima in third, but Monster was only two seconds behind Tracy in 2013. The times don't mean anything to the mountain, though; everyone expected Mitsubishi to win last year, but rain during their run slowed them and Monster Tajima took the crown.

Roy Richards took pole in Electric Production Class in a 2012 Honda Fit EV, Michael Skeen is atop the Open Class in a 2009 Nissan GT-R, Donald Hoffman leads the Exhibition Class in a Radical RXC and Christopher Lennon is ahead of all the Exhibition runners in a 1973 Porsche 911.

The Open Wheel Class is led by none other than Paul Dallenbach, with three overall wins on Pikes Peak and four more class wins. Dallenbach set a new record in the Time Attack Class last year in a Hyundai Genesis Coupe, and a Production Car World Record in a 2014 Range Rover Sport. This year he's driving a 750-horsepower Dallenbach PV03 that his brother Wally Dallenbach, Jr. used to win the class in 2006 and that Paul drove to a win at the Goodwood Festival in 2007.

In other news, Mike Ryan suffered a big accident in his popular Unlimited Exhibition-Class Freightliner semi truck, with the rig damaged beyond repair for this year's event. Ryan may yet make a run up the mountain for time, but he'd be doing so on something much smaller - his Triumph motorcycle.

Enjoy the high-res gallery of photos from yesterday's runs, and we'll be back later with the results of today's qualifying.

Mercedes' $1M S-Class Pullman's could make it the most expensive sedan ever

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Pullman

If insider sources are to be believed, Mercedes-Benz is getting ready to launch the most expensive luxury sedan on the market next year in the form of the S-Class Pullman armored car for $1 million. If it's too flashy for you, then Mercedes is also reviving the Maybach name for an even longer wheelbase variant of the S-Class.

According to company insiders speaking with Bloomberg, the Pullman will be positioned at the ultimate expression of the Mercedes brand and will hark back to the classic S600 Pullman models of the '60s. The driver will sit in a partitioned cabin up front, while wealthy and fortunate passengers will be cosseted in two rows of face-to-face seats in the rear. At a reported 21-feet long, it will be even bigger than a Rolls-Royce Phantom Extended Wheelbase. While the armor probably makes up a few hundred thousand dollars of the price, the cost is still likely going to be significantly more than the old Maybach 62 S at $470,350. Only the one percent of the one percent need apply here.

A slight step down from the Pullman will be the still opulent S-Class Maybach. The reincarnation of the twice-dead brand would ride on an even larger body than the long wheelbase S-Class but still offer four seats. Prices for it are rumored to be double the current S600, which puts it around $300,000 or more. The insider told Bloomberg that the unveiling is planned for November at the LA Auto Show and Guangzhou Motor Show in China.

With four different wheelbase lengths of the S-Class possibly on offer by the end of next year, things could get a bit crowded in the lineup. After the utter failure of Maybach as a brand, critics might suggest it's surprising to see Mercedes putting so much stock in super-expensive luxury sedans. But with the mushrooming number of ultra-wealthy potential clients in markets beyond Europe and North America who are greedily sucking up record numbers of exotics from other automakers, the math doesn't seem so bad after all.

Athletes Who Were Traded for Absurd Things

One of the most difficult things about being a pro athlete has to be the fact that where one plays is almost totally dependent on another person's decision.

Whether that means drafting, throwing money through free agency or acquiring somebody in a trade, it has to be tough not being able to get settled down.

And, as bad as a trade feels, getting swapped for next to nothing has to be even worse—and these athletes are a few who experienced it.

Five more must craft neutral Hearthstone cards

It turns out that people get oddly passionate about card lists, which is honestly a pretty great sign for Hearthstone. The first list we dropped two weeks ago was met with agreement, and also a lot of 'where is this card?!', despite warnings that there would be more to come. There was also some disagreement with the Wild Pyromancer choice, but I'm hoping that Amaz and his skilled use of the fiery minion at Dreamhack Summer has opened some eyes. It's incredibly powerful with the right complements.

This week we'll take a look at another five sub-epic cards no one should be without. The only ranking to the list is mana cost, so we're not saying that one's more important than another. That decision is up to you and what decks you want to play.

SLC6A4 STin2 VNTR genetic polymorphism is associated with tobacco use disorder, but not with successful smoking cessation or smoking characteristics: a case control study

Background:
The aim of this study was to determine if variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) in the second intron (STin2) of the serotonin transporter (SLC6A4) gene was associated with tobacco use disorder, successful smoking cessation, or smoking characteristics. In this case-control study, patients with current tobacco use disorder, diagnosed according to DSM IV criteria (n = 185), and never-smokers, diagnosed according to CDC criteria (n = 175), were recruited and received 52 weeks of combined pharmacotherapy and cognitive therapy. Successful smoking cessation was defined as exhaled carbon monoxide < 6 ppm. SLC6A4 gene STin2 VNTR polymorphism was assessed using a Multiplex-PCR-based method. At baseline, participants were evaluated using the Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) and the ASSIST scale. Results: The STin2.12 allele (OR = 2.45; 95% CI = 1.44-4.15, p < 0.001) was associated with an increased risk for tobacco use disorder, while the STin2.10/10 genotype (OR = 0.42; 95% CI 0.25-0.71, p < 0.001) decreased risk. There were no significant associations between tobacco use disorder and the STin2.10 or STin2.9 alleles or the other genotypes (STin2.12/12, 12/10, 12/9, 10/9 or 9/9). There were no significant associations between the STin2 genotypes and alleles and successful smoking cessation, smoking characteristics and increased alcohol or sedative use risk. Conclusions: Our results suggest that the STin2.10/10 genotype and STin2.12 allele are associated with tobacco use disorder or nicotine dependence, but not with treatment response or severity of dependence. It is hypothesized that the ST2in.12 allele by modulating the metabolism of serotonin may participate in the pathophysiology of tobacco use disorder or nicotine dependence.

FTC urged to halt 'deceptive' CarMax ads over recalled car issue

Earns Carmax

Safety groups and a prominent politician are taking aim at CarMax, the country's largest used car chain, over allegedly deceptive advertising, and they're hoping to prompt a major shift in the way that pre-owned vehicles are sold in the US, as well. In two letters filed with the Federal Trade Commission this week, a coalition of consumer groups and Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) urge the regulator to investigate CarMax and force all used car dealers to fix any pending recalls on a model before it can be sold.

Currently, the law only insures that new cars are up to date on recalls. Senator Schumer's letter to the FTC asks that the regulator pass new rules covering used cars in the same way. He claims, "I am also actively exploring with my colleagues ways to enhance the agency's power to take action on this matter via legislation."

The senator also puts his support behind the consumer groups' petition, which is being spearheaded by an organization called Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety. Schumer goes so far as to ask the FTC to launch "full-fledged investigation" into the their claims.

The advocates' major concern lies in CarMax's "CarMax Quality Certified" label that promises that its used cars are inspected, repaired and checked for water damage. However, the company doesn't check to see if all pending recall repairs are complete on the vehicle. The petition alleges that the advertising could "mislead even sophisticated car buyers" into thinking the cars are safe. It believes that the company should easily be able to check the recall status and supply that information to consumers. The group's goal is to end this type of advertising from the business.

CarMax appears at least partially on board with the idea - with a catch. A company spokesperson told The Detroit News that it supports added regulation, if it also forces manufacturers to supply "all recall notices, the same diagnostic and repair information, and the tools and parts that manufacturers make available to their franchise dealers." That doesn't seem too likely.

Scroll down to read Senator Schumer's letter to the FTC and the advocates' petition submitted to the regulator.

Mike Ryan crashes Freightliner racer in Pikes Peak practice [UPDATE]

Mike Ryan Pikes Peak Crash

Racer Mike Ryan in his wrecked Freightliner hill climb specialAutoblog director of photography Drew Phillips is reporting that Unlimited Class driver Mike Ryan has suffered a significant crash during the end of today's practice session for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

Driving his impressive No. 777 Freightliner racing truck, Phillips indicates that Ryan suffered apparent understeer on a left-hand turn in the lower section of the hill climb used for qualifying. Driver and truck apparently continued down an embankment of some 50 to 75 feet. The picture above shows the scene after emergency workers arrived.

Rescue workers on hand indicated that the driver was "okay," at the time, and a call to a representative of Mike Ryan Motorsports confirmed that the driver "is fine." Apparently Ryan called in to inform staff that he was unharmed, and he was able to avoid even a trip to the hospital.

It is still unclear how extensive the damage to the vehicle is, however. We're still working to get shots of the crashed vehicle, but Phillips indicates that it may not be repairable in time for the race. Stay tuned as we know more.

Readers that have tuned into our Pikes Peak coverage in years past will no doubt remember Ryan's Freightliner rides, as well as his name. Last year, Autoblog scribe Michael Harley even rode along with Ryan in his Freightliner Cascadia Pikes Peak Special.

UPDATE: Drew Phillips has provided these first photos of the wrecked Freighliner, and as feared, it looks like it will be unable to make this year's race. The same may not be said of its hearty driver, Mike Ryan, however, who seems to be keeping a good sense of humor despite the crash (that's him pictured in the cab). Our man Phillips hears he might still contest The Peak with a Triumph bike run.

2014 NBA Draft Prospects Show Off Their Suits

NBA draft prospects have provided us endless entertainment through the years with their suits, and just as this year's draft promises to be one of the best in recent history, so do the outfits.

Oklahoma State guard and likely lottery pick Marcus Smart has one of the most unique suits of the draft. The lining features his home state of Texas with a mark for his hometown of Flower Mound, his high school's logo and what appears to be his mother's name listed.

Potential top pick Andrew Wiggins has a very interesting look.

Noah Vonleh's bluish suit is sure to draw some attention.

Jabari Parker, Tyler Ennis and Dante Exum all look like they're going with a classic, clean look.

Low-molecular-weight heparin for prevention of placenta-mediated pregnancy complications: protocol for a systematic review and individual patient data meta-analysis (AFFIRM)

Background:
Placenta-mediated pregnancy complications include pre-eclampsia, late pregnancy loss, placental abruption, and the small-for-gestational age newborn. They are leading causes of maternal, fetal, and neonatal morbidity and mortality in developed nations. Women who have experienced these complications are at an elevated risk of recurrence in subsequent pregnancies. However, despite decades of research no effective strategies to prevent recurrence have been identified, until recently. We completed a pooled summary-based meta-analysis that strongly suggests that low-molecular-weight heparin reduces the risk of recurrent placenta-mediated complications. The proposed individual patient data meta-analysis builds on this successful collaboration. The project is called AFFIRM, An individual patient data meta-analysis oF low-molecular-weight heparin For prevention of placenta-medIated pRegnancy coMplications.
Methods:
We conducted a systematic review to identify randomized controlled trials with a low-molecular-weight heparin intervention for the prevention of recurrent placenta-mediated pregnancy complications. Investigators and statisticians representing eight trials met to discuss the outcomes and analysis plan for an individual patient data meta-analysis. An additional trial has since been added for a total of nine eligible trials. The primary analyses from the original trials will be replicated for quality assurance prior to recoding the data from each trial and combining it into a common dataset for analysis. Using the anonymized combined data we will conduct logistic regression and subgroup analyses aimed at identifying which women with previous pregnancy complications benefit most from treatment with low-molecular-weight heparin during pregnancy.DiscussionThe goal of the proposed individual patient data meta-analysis is a thorough estimation of treatment effects in patients with prior individual placenta-mediated pregnancy complications and exploration of which complications are specifically prevented by low-molecular-weight heparin.Systematic review registration: PROSPERO (International Prospective Registry of Systematic Reviews) 23 December 2013, CRD42013006249

Deserter debuff changes for Random and Rated PvP

PvP has long has the Deserter debuff, which means that there's a cost to simply dropping a game rather than taking the loss. However, that system is being changed in terms of how it functions in rated PvP like Arenas and rated battlegrounds. For starters, it's being applied to said rated PvP. In addition to now getting the Deserter debuff for rated PvP, how it works for random BG's will also be changing.

Lore - Upcoming Deserter Hotfixes for Rated PvP
As part of our continued efforts to curb exploitive behavior and improve the overall PvP experience for our players, we're applying a couple hotfixes that will make a few changes to how the Deserter debuff functions, and also apply it to Arenas and Rated Battlegrounds.

Once these hotfixes are applied, a player who leaves an Arena or Rated Battleground before anyone in the match has entered combat will, at first, be given a 5-minute Deserter debuff. If they leave another match prematurely within a 20-minute window, the duration of the Deserter debuff will increase by 5 minutes each time (and the 20-minute window will restart), to a maximum of 20 minutes. The debuff will also apply if a player leaves the queue (or ignores it) once the match is ready and they're given the prompt to enter.

The Deserter debuff given for leaving a Random Battleground early will also be changed to begin at 5 minutes (and increase by 5 minutes for each subsequent desertion), but otherwise the rules will stay the same. Leaving a Random Battleground in progress at any point before it's finished will give the Deserter debuff, and leaving or ignoring the prompt to enter a Random Battleground will not.

We're currently in the process of preparing and testing the hotfix, but hope to push it live with this week's maintenance period.

The change seems aimed at allowing players who just drop occasionally to get back into PvP relatively quickly, while becoming more onerous if you're a serial dropper. Rated PvP will also get the debuff if they queue but don't accept the queue, while randoms will not, which seems reasonable to me.

Toyota prices fuel cell sedan at $70k in Japan, coming to US and Europe next summer [w/video]

Toyota FCV Reveal

Toyota has finally unveiled its FCV hydrogen fuel cell sedan and its Japanese price. We won't have to wait too long to see the first of these revolutionary vehicles on the roads. It will go on sale in Japan in April 2015 and will come to the US and Europe later that summer.

In Japan, the FCV will be priced at roughly 7 million yen before taxes ($68,810 at current exchange rates). However, Toyota makes it clear in the press release that we shouldn't try to extrapolate US MSRP from that figure, saying that official pricing for the US and Europe has not yet been determined. As will be the case in the US, sales in Japan will be limited to parts of the country that already have a hydrogen refueling infrastructure (that means you, California).

The production version of the FCV looks almost identical to the concept from last year's Tokyo Motor Show. There is a new vertical strip of LEDs at each corner of the front air intake and real sideview windows, instead of the nubs on the prototype. The weird squiggles from the rear trim are also gone in favor of a more production-ready look, but the taillights survive the changes mostly intact.

The automaker is keeping most of the specs about the FCV a secret for now as well, but it is confirmed a few key details. It promises performance for the sedan on par with a gasoline engine and a cruising range of about 435 miles, according to the Japanese government's testing procedure. In our test drive of the prototype, we found the performance was gas-sedan-like with some EV aspects. The official range in other regions will differ. Toyota is promising that it takes just three minutes to top up the sedan's hydrogen tanks, highlighting one major advantage hydrogen has over electric vehicles: refueling time.

Scroll down to read the entire release and watch a brief promotional film from Toyota. Also, check out the gallery for all of the angles.
