Life-sized Sinister Squashling drops in real life

Image
Jalterixnar tweeted in today with a picture of his team's life-sized Sinister Squashling pet they made for their company's Halloween pumpkin carving contest. It's quite an accurate version of it too.

Unfortunately Jalterixnar wasn't able to bend the laws of physics and make this thing alive, so it won't hop along side you, nor will it collapse in on itself. But we think the lack of vampire squashlings walking around the streets is probably a good thing.

Happy Halloween!

Blood Pact: Looking for loot in tier 14 raids

Blood Pact Looking for loot in tier 14 MON
Every week, WoW Insider brings you Blood Pact for affliction, demonology, and destruction warlocks. This week, Megan O'Neill wishes she has a sorcerer's apprentice to run Simulation Craft over and over again with different reforges.

Loot lists are about as boring to write as they are to read, but they're helpful for when you're staring down a 20-second timer on the EPGP window and you're not sure what GP-spending button you'd like to hit.

After we get done with the tier 14 gear, we should be set to talk about cooler things, like whether capping hit makes sense or particular boss strategies.

Hon Hai Precision sees profits surge in Q3

DNP Foxconn

The two-headed beast that is Foxconn / Hon Hai has just released its latest financials, showing that the oft-troubled manufacturer has seen profit margins jump around two percent. It brought in $24 billion (NT$ 711.0 billion) in net sales, generating a net profit of $1.3 billion (NT$ 30.2 billion). At the end of September, it had $1.4 billion stashed in the bank, and the company has said it is striving to enforce "social and environmental responsibility," as it should, really.

Breakfast Topic: Do you play WoW in a different world region from where you live?

Breakfast Topic Do you play WoW in a different world region from where you live
You can take a portal to another world within Azeroth, but it's not so simple in the real world to play the game with someone from another continent. World of Warcraft is designed to be played on servers geographically located nearest to where you live and play. You can play WoW in the United States, Canada, Europe, Russia, Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, and Brazil, as well as South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and mainland China -- but you can't mix freely with players on servers in other areas. Making the hop to another region means buying a copy of the game localized for that region, then starting a new account and new characters there.

Despite the hassles and rotten latencies, people play across regional server separations for all sorts of reasons. Moving is an obvious nudge to make the change. You'll often hear players wishing they could make the change for a chance to practice another language. More practically, many players use time zone differences to line up a nontraditional schedule with raiding opportunities and bustling server times.

Although I haven't chosen to make the jump to an EU realm, the prospect is something I usually mull over once or twice a year. I miss friends there I used to game with; Facebook just can't hold a candle to adventuring together. Even the game world seems bigger somehow when the player community itself is more diverse. Regional segregation is one aspect of World of Warcraft that I've never quite adjusted to, even after all these years.

If you play WoW in a different world region from where you live, what's taken you across the divide? Have high latencies or other technical difficulties turned out to be a wet blanket on your play? Did changing regions end up meeting your needs?

Hands on with FreedomPop's free data for your iPad and iPod touch

FreedomPop's free data pitch is aimed at the thrifty consumer: put down a refundable deposit on a USB dongle or MiFi-style router (iPod touch cases are also an option) and receive a monthly 500 MB bandwidth stipend for life. For free.

If it sounds too good to be true, well, it might be. But before I get to that, let me give you a general idea of where FreedomPop is coming from.

Plans

FreedomPop is currently a Clearwire 4G WiMAX rebundler (they will be moving to Sprint in 2013). You can use FreedomPop's equipment in any area that Clear currently services. You choose from three plans:

  • Free 500 MB - US$0/month for the first 500 MB and then $0.02/MB after. That's $20.00/GB. This is the bottom feeder plan that many consumers will choose.
  • Casual 2 GB - $18/month ("for a limited time") for the first 2 GB, and then $0.01/MB after, or $10/GB.
  • Premiere 4 GB - $29/month ("for a limited time") for the first 4 GB, and then $0.01/MB after, the same $10/GB as Casual.

Leaving family plan sharing aside, the Casual and Premiere data compare well to major carriers. AT&T's 250 MB/month plan costs $15 and $30 for 3 GB. Sprint offers 300 MB/month for $15 and 3 GB for $35. Verizon's offerings include 1 GB for $20 and 2 GB for $30. As you can see, FreedomPop's paid plans are competitive.

What's more you can share this data among multiple devices if you select the Freedom Spot hotspot. It supports up to 8 devices at once, and offers up to 6 hours of use according to FreedomPop's marketing text.

Penny Pinching Data Usage

My concerns surround the Free 500MB plan. I suspect most users will choose this plan. I don't see how this loss-leader approach readily extends towards a revenue stream to ensure the company's health and longevity.

That's because frugal users will likely disable FreedomPop's automatic top-off feature. In its default configuration, user accounts for the free plan auto-renew to paid $20 top-offs after 400 MB of bandwidth is used. Users can easily switch this feature off. (Set Billing > Billing Settings > Automatic Top Up > Enabled to No.)

Hands on with FreedomPop's free data for your iPad and iPod touch

So where else can FreedomPop earn from its free users? It provides a low-rent data-for-completed-offers program. Sign up for clubs, mailing lists, surveys, etc. and FreedomPop extends your free data with one-time boosts.

Hands on with FreedomPop's free data for your iPad and iPod touch

I honestly think users would probably prefer to pay $5 or $10 a month for the same 500 MB data plan and ensure the company's long-term health than see it try to make a go of it with this kind of low-end "sell your consumer information" approach.

That's because unbundled data is a precious commodity, and one that's hard to find frugal solutions for. Ever since AT&T killed their data feature plans back in April, it's been something that many users have done without.

As a point of comparison, Clear's unlimited data plans cost $35 and $50 for basic home and mobile use. These provide excellent alternatives for the high-end data consumer. It's the low-use, on-the-go consumer, who lives in areas with plentiful Wi-Fi who struggles to find an affordable solution for filling coverage gaps.

Tony Miller, FreedomPop's marketing VP, has given hints that the company will try to build additional revenue streams by adding services like VoIP. I'm not convinced that this will work.

Performance

It's not hard to beat AT&T's 3G (aka "4G") data service if you live in Denver. As you can see from the SpeedTest.net screencap that follows, AT&T's service is just awful. And yes, I live in a supported area.

Hands on with FreedomPop's free data for your iPad and iPod touch

Interestingly enough, I live outside the supported Clear zone. I'm in one of their "partially covered" rather than fully covered locations. (This translates to light green vs dark green on their service map.)

FreedomPop's Clear-powered WiMAX data absolutely smokes AT&T, both at home and around town. Here's a typical test from my iPad, when connected through the Freedom Spot. Be aware that each test consumes a fair portion of your monthly allowance, so you don't want to be running many of these tests unless you're doing a write-up for a blog.

Hands on with FreedomPop's free data for your iPad and iPod touch

Steve Sande, who lives about 10 miles south of me, uses Verizon on his 3G iPad. He regularly sees data numbers equal to or better than these while around Denver. Steve is in the middle of changing his iPhone AT&T service to Verizon for exactly these reasons. I may follow next year, when my current AT&T contract is up.

FreedomPop will be switching from Clear's WiMAX network to Sprint's LTE next year.

Conclusions

As much as I love the budget data FreedomPop is offering, I do have concerns about the company's long-term health. Their low-end Free plan doesn't seem fully thought out to me. If you sign up, keep that in mind.

At the same time, I've developed respect for Clear -- a service I never had an opportunity to test before. A quick Google search revealed mixed experiences with Clear customer support, but after this test, it's a service I'd consider using. I think it might work particularly as an alternative to my current iPhone-as-primary-data-consumer lifestyle, especially now that Apple offers the iPad mini.

I'm holding onto the FreedomPop for a while, to continue testing. Here's hoping the company can make it work. I'm just not convinced it can.

Breakfast Topic: Do you have an in game quirk?

Image
Look, I can't help it if I really like eggrolls.

In Mists of Pandaria, we've finally got a feast that looks like something I'd love to chow down on in real life. Last expansion we had the ubiquitous crab in a bucket that always made me sad to think about eating. I mean, the poor little guy was still moving! The expansion before, we had a giant fish on a plate with some oranges. And while I don't mind fish every now and again, I don't really like fish that looks back at me while I'm eating it.

But this expansion, we've got a delicious banquet of food, including my secret nemesis, the eggroll. I love eggrolls. I don't eat Chinese food very often, but every time I do, there's an eggroll on my plate, or I'm not happy. But I've developed a really weird quirk as a result of this -- when my character sits down at the feast before a pull, I always place her on the eggroll side of the table. Why? Well ... I really like eggrolls. And the other side has a fish on a platter, and we've already discussed my disgust for food with eyeballs attached.

I don't know if it's just me, but it seems like more often than not the rest of my raid gravitates to the eggroll side, too. And I haven't asked them about it, I've just watched as we sat down and ate our food for buffs. I've just quietly observed the phenomenon, and I finally decided to sit down and write about it in the hopes of discovering that perhaps I'm not quite as odd as I think I may be.

Do you sit on the eggroll side? Do you pay attention to feasts and position yourself a certain way? Do you have any kind of weird quirk, something you have to do before a pull for luck? Do you have something you do that you think helps your gameplay, even if it's got nothing to do with gameplay at all? And perhaps most importantly -- eggrolls, yes or no?

Will OKC Thunder Be Bridesmaids as Long as Dwight Howard Is with L.A. Lakers?

The safest answer is "too early to tell," and Serge Ibaka is a large reason for why the guesswork is just that. As Zach Lowe of Grantland puts it, Serge Ibaka is now the "most important player in the NBA."

"Most important" is different from "best," and Ibaka's importance hinges on the wide chasm between "ceiling" and "floor," combined with Oklahoma's specific place as a spitting-distance contender for years to come.

Serge can shore up a shaky Oklahoma City defensive frontcourt. He hasn't exactly done so thus far, but at 3.7 blocks in only 27 minutes of play, Serge flaunts a skill set from which greatness can arise. The young big man has incredible potential, but he's yet to demonstrate to harness it.

Ibaka's improvement will determine whether Oklahoma City can survive this decision. Ranked ninth in the league in defensive efficiency as a team, it will be exceedingly difficult to make it back to the finals, sans improvement on defense. If they're losing considerable offensive productivity from James Harden's departure, it must be made back on the other end.

Last year's finals showed two kinds of Serge Ibaka, good and bad. First, here's the bad example. Chris Bosh pump-fakes Kendrick Perkins into another dimension and drives to the hoop. Serge should come over and contest, but he falls asleep on defense.

Earlier in the game, though, Ibaka showed what he was capable of in a similar situation. Chris Bosh pump-faked Perkins out of the way, and Serge flew in like a vulture.

Serge Ibaka can become Oklahoma City's response to Dwight Howard, and save them from bridesmaid status. He also possesses the added bonus of offensive competence. Ibaka is the rare shot-blocker who can hit 18 footers with regularity. With Harden gone, his ability to space the floor will be a massive help.

Russell Westbrook also needs to take a step forward, so as to help the Thunder keep pace. Westbrook has improved markedly as a shooter, but his decision making still leaves much to be desired. James Harden was the de facto point guard for many Thunder possessions, and it's incumbent on Westbrook to become more of a distributor next season.

Kevin Martin will help OKC, but his future role with the team remains unclear. He's on an expiring contract, and it's anyone's guess as to whether he'll be back next season. In his possible absence, Oklahoma City has some cap space to toy with. Unfortunately, based on how they've dealt James Harden, I'm pessimistic as to whether the Thunder will use this money to actually get better.

That's the most dismaying aspect of this Thunder move. Much as they might tout "flexibility," this was a money move, on top of everything. If a team chooses cash over a better title chance, I'm not going to fulminate over it. But, if I'm handicapping their future chances, such a move is worrisome.

Tablet and smartphone use detailed by age group, gender

In an effort to better understand the growing tablet and smartphone markets, Flurry Analytics studied over 30 million consumers to paint a picture of just who is utilizing the devices, and for what purpose. Some of the takeaways fall in line with what you might expect: The 25-34 age group dominates both smartphone and tablet use, gadget owners are more likely to use their devices between 7 PM and 11 PM, etc.

But there are also a few more interesting tidbits. For example, while the age spread of smartphone ownership peaks between 25 and 34 and falls sharply as age progresses, tablet ownership is much more spread out. The average age of a tablet owner is 34 years, but the 35-54 age bracket still accounts for 24 percent of the overall total. Those in the 55-plus group make up 17 percent of the total, which is quite large when compared to the 7 percent of overall smartphone owners in that same age bracket.

Another somewhat surprising statistic is the amount of time people spend playing games on their tablets. Of all the ways those surveyed use their devices, tablet owners played games 67 percent of the time they picked up their slates. This is compared to smartphone owners who played games 39 percent of the time they were using their handsets.

Flurry also found that while tablets were used less often when compared to smartphones, the amount of time spent using the device each session beat out that of its smaller counterpart. You can check out the full breakdown of results on Flurry's blog, and then let us know if you see any glaring abnormalities when compared to your own experiences.

The danger of counterfeit iPhone/iPad USB adapters

The danger of counterfeit iPhoneiPad USB adapters

Software engineer Ken Shirriff took a close look at 12 different USB power adapters and confirmed what we already suspected -- that counterfeit chargers are junk. They are poorly constructed and can cause serious damage to both your devices and yourself.

Shirriff measured the performance of a variety of branded chargers including those from Apple, Samsung, Motorola, Belkin, Monoprice and more. He also threw in a few counterfeit power adapters for the iPhone and iPad. While Apple's official chargers scored well in the tests, the counterfeit ones scored poorly. Not only do the counterfeit adapters deliver significantly less power than advertised, the chargers also ignore basic safety standards. Shirriff says "you're putting your phone, and more importantly yourself, at risk if you use one of these chargers."

Shirriff gives tips on spotting these fake adapters, but notes that they are often so similar to Apple's chargers that it is difficult to tell them apart. Your best (and safest) bet is to cough up the $29 for an Apple power adapter and rest easy knowing that you are getting a quality charger that won't burn your house down.

You can read Shiriff's full performance report that covers both the branded and counterfeit chargers on his website.

Boston College vs. Wake Forest: TV Schedule, Live Stream, Radio, Game Time, More

It's been a forgettable season for Boston College and a semi-forgettable one for Wake Forest—and when they face each other on Saturday, there isn't a whole lot for either of them to play for.

With four games remaining in the 2012 season, including this one, we know that neither of these teams is going anywhere fast. The goal is to get through the season without enduring further unbearable embarrassment—like the kind that comes with a 2-6 overall record (BC), or the kind that comes with blowout losses to the conference's top teams (Wake Forest).

The ACC hasn't been a tough conference in 2012, to say the least, and both the Demon Deacons and the Eagles—teams that were on top of this conference not too long ago—illustrate that perfectly.

Wake has beaten the teams it is supposed to beat but has been unable to compete with decent teams. BC, for the most part, has been unable to compete with anybody due to offensive inconsistencies and a bad, bad defense.

Nevertheless, if the Eagles win on Saturday, they will at least have some company in the cellar of the Atlantic Division. That's something to play for.

Where: Groves Stadium, Winston-Salem, N.C.

When: Saturday, Nov. 3 at 3:30 p.m. ET

Watch: GamePlan

Listen: WEEI 850 AM in Boston, WBRF 98.1 FM in Winston-Salem

Live Stream: ESPN3

Betting Line (via OddsShark): Wake Forest -4

Boston College Injury Report (via USAToday.com)

  • RB Tahj Kimble (leg) missed last week's game and is questionable for Saturday.
  • WR Colin Larmond Jr. has been suspended for two games for a violation of team rules and is questionable for Saturday.
  • LB Andre Lawrence (upper body) is questionable for Saturday.
  • DT Dillon Quinn (leg) is questionable for Saturday.
  • FB Jake Sinkovec (foot) is questionable for Saturday.
  • DT Kaleb Ramsey (leg) is questionable for Saturday.
  • DB Al Louis-Jean Jr. (foot) is out indefinitely.
  • TE Chris Pantale (ankle) is out indefinitely.
  • G Harris Williams (foot) is out indefinitely.

Wake Forest Injury Report (via USAToday.com)

  • T Devin Bolling has been suspended indefinitely.
  • S Duran Lowe has been suspended indefinitely.
  • G Antonio Ford (leg) is out for the season.
  • WR Matt James (collarbone) is out indefinitely.
  • TE Neil Basford (Achilles) is out for the season.

BCS Implications

The jig is up: There are absolutely no BCS implications for either of these teams. The good news for the Demon Deacons is they still can be bowl eligible when the season ends if they keep winning.

Right now, Wake Forest is 4-4 with four games remaining. It has some leeway, but it can do itself a favor by winning out, or (more realistically) by winning three of its last four. It should be able to beat Boston College; NC State and Vanderbilt will be a bit trickier, but both of those games are winnable.

The big challenge will come on Nov. 17, when Wake Forest visits No. 3 Notre Dame. That game—which isn't very winnable at all—is the reason why it is essential for Wake to win its other three.

As far as BC goes, this is a team that just got its first conference victory last week. A bowl is way out of the question. If the Eagles win one of their final four games, that would be an accomplishment.

What They're Saying

In light of its first conference victory—which came at home on Saturday, in a 20-17 triumph over Maryland—the Eagles are feeling good, as they should be. Coming off five consecutive losses and a 1-6 start to the season, that first conference win has to feel pretty good.

The game was by no means perfect—or even well-played—but BC got the job done, despite rushing for a mere eight yards (!) and fumbling twice. As Boston.com's Julian Benbow writes:

… Beating visiting Maryland Saturday, 20-17, gave the Eagles a shot of confidence after they had lost five straight. The tone in the locker room was dramatically different than it was after the most recent defeats, to Army, Florida State and Georgia Tech, and that is valuable for a 2-6 team trying to make the most of its four remaining games.

Wake Forest, meanwhile, is feeling far less confident after dropping a disappointing 42-13 home game at the hands of No. 18 Clemson. That game presented a big opportunity for the Demon Deacons: It gave them a chance to improve to two games over .500, and it would have given them a huge victory over a ranked opponent.

But it wasn't in the cards.

To add insult to injury, Clemson racked up a couple of school records against Wake last week: Quarterback Tajh Boyd threw for 428 yards and five touchdowns , while receiver Sammy Watkins finished with a record 202 yards.

Fortunately for the Demon Deacons, the offense they'll be facing on Saturday will be nowhere near as formidable as Clemson's.

Boston College Player to Watch

The Eagles' rushing numbers were abysmal last week against Maryland, but they're also a bit deceiving.

Junior running back Andre Williams had an OK game, rushing for 60 yards on 16 carries. But BC's numbers—eight yards total—looked so bad mostly due to the fact that quarterback Chase Rettig lost 43 yards on the ground.

Obviously, it would be helpful if BC could present a balanced offensive attack—no easy feat for a team that ranks 121st in rushing yards. But Rettig also needs to get rid of the ball as quickly as possible, and Williams needs to step up and have a big game.

That isn't out of the question for him. A few weeks ago, in consecutive games against Army and Florida State, Williams finished with at least 100 yards, even racking up 191 and two scores against Army. He got 105 against that stingy FSU defense.

He can be effective on the ground, and he needs to be on Saturday.

Wake Forest Player to Watch

Demon Deacons quarterback Tanner Price didn't have a bad game against the Tigers. He threw for 232 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions. He, in fact, isn't a quarterback who throws many interceptions at all.

But he, like Rettig, got pummeled by the Tigers defense the last time out, losing a season-high 46 yards on the ground. If he can get rid of the ball, Wake Forest is generally in good shape, and he's even been on a bit of a roll over the last few weeks: He's thrown eight touchdowns  in Wake's last five games, and he's only thrown two picks.

Last time out, both of his touchdowns went to Tommy Bohanon. If they can establish a rhythm again this week, this offense will be in decent shape.

Key Storyline

The extent to which Wake Forest's defense struggled against Clemson last week cannot be overstated. The Demon Deacons allowed the Tigers to score five unanswered touchdowns before they even got on the scoreboard. Four of those touchdowns came in a 13-minute span in the second quarter.

It's hard to put up a fight when a team's down 35-7 going into halftime, and Wake didn't put up much of a fight at all. Last week's game was over midway through the second quarter, and this week, this defense needs to bounce back in a big way.

And BC's offense—which has been decent at its best, atrocious at its worst in 2012—offers the Demon Deacons a good opportunity to mount a comeback. First and foremost, this unit needs to get its confidence back, and if it can limit the Eagles on Saturday, it will re-acquire that confidence heading into an important three-game stretch to end the season.

Prediction: Wake Forest Wins

Wake Forest may be coming off a tough loss, and its defense may have looked notably weak last week against Clemson, but BC doesn't exactly bring the most intimidating offense to the table. It can't run the ball, and forcing Chase Rettig to throw is likely to provoke mistakes.

This is the perfect game to get the Demon Deacons back on the right track to close out the season.

Can't save PDF files from Safari with Mountain Lion? Here's the fix

There's quite a bit of traffic on Apple's discussion boards (and others) about a problem with saving PDF files that have been viewed in Safari with Mountain Lion.

Safari can view PDF files just fine, but for many people the problems start when you go to save the files or print them. The files get corrupted, and you're met with a message that tells you the file is damaged. There is no problem viewing a PDF you already have in either Apple's Preview app or with Adobe Reader. If Safari is involved, however, you are likely to have some issues.

Can't save PDF files from Safari with Mountain Lion Here's the fix

You can try to open the file in Adobe Reader, and you'll get a similar message.

Can't save PDF files from Safari with Mountain Lion Here's the fix

The cause seems to be a problem with Adobe Reader updates. There's a file in your Library/Internet Plug-Ins called 'AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin'. Find it, and trash it. You'll also see a file called 'AdobePDFViewer.plugin'. Don't trash that one, it's fine.

I had this problem on both my Mac laptop and Mac Pro. I checked with a couple of friends and they all had the same problem. Some people have spent a lot of time on the phone with Apple and haven't gotten the problem resolved, as the issue rests with Adobe, not Apple.

Let us know if you've seen this, or if you haven't. Lots of people are affected, but you may not see the problem until you need to view or print that PDF. Saving a PDF link without opening it works fine, but if the document is opened in Safari, and then saved, then the trouble can begin.

The 5 Most Disappointing Players of the NFL's First Half

Whether it's right or wrong, fair or unfair, surprises and disappointments have everything to do with expectations.

Teams and players coming off an unimpressive season tend to fly under the radar at the beginning of a new season. On the other hand, those who have enjoyed success tend to grab headlines and lofty expectations once a new season begins.

And through the first half of the 2012 season, many teams and players have been incredibly disappointing.

The NFC West—most notably its elite defenses—has been one of the most pleasant surprises of 2012. However, the NFC East has produced two teams—Dallas and Philadelphia—that have fallen well short of expectations through eight weeks.

There is a wide variety of talent among the current NFL MVP candidates. Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers looks like a solid bet to repeat as the league MVP, but Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan is currently enjoying the best season of his career and his team remains unbeaten.

If it's not Rodgers or Ryan, Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning could be a candidate to win his fifth MVP award this season. Manning is perhaps the best story through eight weeks of the season, having thrown 17 touchdowns and just four interceptions.

Manning has long been among the league's best quarterbacks, but coming into the season, many players looked at 2012 as yet another step in their rise to the NFL's elite.

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton enjoyed one of the most impressive rookie seasons in NFL history, causing many football enthusiasts to expect a dramatic rise in production this season. However, Newton's fallen flat through seven games this season.

Let's take a look at the five most disappointing players of the 2012 season.

Schiller says not to expect Blu-ray from Apple

In Time's interview with Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller, he addresses the long-standing question of whether or not Apple will ever jump on the Blu-ray bandwagon. It seems that barring any unforeseen circumstances, you'll likely never see a Blu-ray option from Apple on any machine.

"Blu-ray has come with issues unrelated to the actual quality of the movie that make [it] a complex and not-great technology," Schiller explains. "So for a whole plethora of reasons, it makes a lot of sense to get rid of optical discs in desktops and notebooks."

Of course, with the new, ultra-slim iMac and Retina-equipped MacBooks completely abandoning optical drives, it's clear that the company isn't really a fan of discs in any form. You still have the option of using a third party external Blu-ray drive and software, should you desire, but you'll likely never actually see it as an option from Apple when building your own Mac online.

Quick Spin: 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet

2012 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet in Guards Red, front 3/4

Honesty time: Much like Editor-in-Chief John Neff, convertibles aren't really my thing. Oh sure, I love having a good droptop for a week every now and then, but I just can't see myself ever plunking down the cash to own one.

But whereas Neff cites specific areas of compromise as the big reason for not owning a cabrio, my argument lies mostly with design. Simply put, I can't think of a single convertible on the market that doesn't somehow look slightly worse than its coupe kin. Exceptions can be made for droptop-only models like the BMW Z4, Mercedes-Benz SLK and the lovely Mazda MX-5 Miata, but again, there are no dedicated hardtop versions of those cars to compare them to. And when you're working with a shape as iconic and precision-cut as the Porsche 911, lopping the roof off just doesn't do it for me.

So while I would never buy this Cabriolet over the beautiful coupe, there's still a lot to love about the wind-in-your-hair 911 experience. And as I learned over the course of a week, there's a whole lot of praise to be given to the Porsche's base powertrain, as well.

Driving Notes
  • I've spent a bit of time with the Carrera S and its 3.8-liter direct-injected flat-six, but even with 50 less horsepower and 38 fewer pound-feet of torque on hand, this 3.4-liter mill is still quite impressive. Even in 3,197-pound, two-wheel-drive Cabriolet form, the smaller engine's 350 hp and 287 lb-ft are more than enough to keep things interesting.
  • That's especially true when paired with the seven-speed manual transmission. I was initially worried that I'd be spending a lot of time changing gears, but thankfully, there's enough power available in each gear for most passing situations. Even so, with a nicely weighted clutch and a gearbox that's perfectly placed for quick steering-wheel-to-shifter movements, frequent use of the seven-speed stick is quite sweet.
  • One more word about that seven-speed unit: The actual action of shifting into seventh gear is neat, but the weirder feeling is downshifting into sixth. And since seventh gear really acts as a full-on overdrive, seven-to-five shifts are more appropriate for moments of power on demand.
  • The chassis of this 911 Cabriolet feels every bit as solid as the Carrera S coupe I drove earlier this year. Sporting convertibles are tricky business, but Porsche has absolutely nailed it here with this 991 generation. You really don't feel any sort of dynamic sacrifice by losing the added rigidity of the hardtop.
  • The best part about the roof-removed experience is being able to hear the 911's excellent exhaust note at full volume, especially with the sport exhaust in full swing. Push the button on the right side of the center console and you'll be treated to nothing but aural delight during acceleration, as well as that snap-crackle-grumble-burble wind-down when you let off the throttle. It's simply intoxicating.
  • Overall, topless driving is actually quite pleasant. Don't want to be in a flurry of wind noise? Flip up the electronic windscreen and the front passenger compartment becomes a place where you can actually hold conversations with your shotgun-rider at higher speeds. And since those rear seats are really only usable as parcel shelves anyway, the screen gives added protection for your shopping bags, as well.
  • Going back to my design discussion for a moment, the big area of offense is what happens to the coupe's sloping roofline when the top was chopped off. Basically, instead of a svelte, fluid design, you're left with a sort of hunchback over the engine when the soft top is folded. Things look fine with the cloth top in place, but if you are paying extra for the Cabriolet, you'd better be dropping that top as often as possible.
  • That said, I think the 991 generation 911 might be my favorite yet. I love specific design elements like the slim taillamps and LED accents up front, and while the 20-inch Carrera Classic wheels ($2,730) look one inch too large to my eyes, they're seriously handsome.
  • As tested, this 911 Carrera Cabriolet stickers for $119,530 including $950 for destination. Yes, that price includes lavish options like the Guards Red seatbelts ($540) and full leather interior ($4,120!), but even so, the cost of entry is still $93,700.
  • Considering the fact that you aren't really gaining any sort of functionality with those totally useless rear seats, I just don't see the argument for owning a 911 Cabriolet over a $60,990 Boxster S. It's arguably a more sporting performer - lighter, more powerful and will sprint to 60 miles per hour in the same 4.8 seconds as this 911 C2 Cabriolet - and with its two-seat roadster-only design, the whole package looks more appealing to my eyes, as well.

Who Is the NBA's Most Underrated Star Entering the 2012-13 Season?

Well, I didn't expect my choice for "most underrated star" to get traded on Saturday night. Here's to hoping that James Harden will make the leap from "underrated" to "rated," as franchise player for the Houston Rockets. He finally has the spotlight on his own team, which is a status-leap forward, even if playing for Houston is a step down from playing for OKC

This season will present a challenge for James Harden because his usage rate will go up. The measure of superstardom is the ability to take on high usage while still being efficient. There's a chance that Harden will turn the ball over more often and miss more shots when calling his own number so often.

He's demonstrated the ability to thrive as his offensive-generator, though, and he did so most memorably in these past playoffs. In a close-out Game 4 against the defending champion Dallas Mavericks, Harden was a human fourth-quarter offense.

You might fault him for asking for a max contract, but you'd probably say, "Pay me" if this was your feat. In these moments, James Harden showed superstar power. At his best, Harden has the ability to create shots like Russell Westbrook and make shots like Kevin Durant.

Of course, there is also a bad James Harden and we saw that guy in the five-game series versus Miami. In those games, he was pressing, missing layups and flopping entirely too often. It colored perceptions of his ability—a bit too much in my opinion, considering the overall efficient playoffs the Beard had submitted.

Digging into the numbers, Harden notched an equivalent Win Shares per 48 minutes (an aggregate stat that doesn't weigh shot attempts as heavily as PER does) to Kevin Durant. That might sound surprising on the face of it, but watch Harden for a while.

James slithers sideways with such deftness that he almost always draws a foul upon contact. It helps that Harden flips his massive beard back in a faux whiplash, a Pavlovian signal that prompts a ref's whistle. If you back off James, he nails the three, hitting .390 of his treys last season. The combination of threes and free throws carried James Harden to an insane 66 percent true shooting percentage last year, the highest among guards who played over 30 minutes per game.

Once dribbling, Harden is also a threat to pass, averaging roughly four assists per 36 minutes. His usage rate (the measure of offensive involvement) is considerably lower than Durant's or Westbrook's, making that figure all the more impressive. Unlike Westbrook, Harden can run the pick-and-roll well, which made him OKC's point guard, almost by default. The offense surged when Harden came off the bench, averaging 14 points better per 100 possessions, according to Basketball Value

Looking at the evidence, James Harden is a superstar in waiting. Oklahoma City has kept him buried on the bench, hidden behind Thabo Sefolosha. That wasn't enough to stop the max contract offers from coming, though it may have been enough to decrease Harden's status in the eyes of many fans. Today, he's basketball's most underrated player. Tomorrow? He just might get his due.

Square Enix considers dropping iOS prices

The Casual Connect gaming conference is going on in Kiev, Ukraine this week, and while there, Square Enix's General Manager of Mobile for Europe Antony Douglas expressed that his company is considering lowering its prices on iOS. By itself, that's not a very surprising notion: Most companies these days are realizing that lower prices on the App Store open up to a much larger audience, and there are other ways to monetize apps rather than just the traditional pricing model.

But what's interesting here is that Square Enix is considering such a notion. The venerated Japanese RPG company has released quite a few apps on iOS, and its most popular apps (including Chrono Trigger and the more recent World Ends With You) have been priced significantly higher than even other very polished iOS games (US$9.99 and $19.99 for those two, respectively). In the past, we've seen this as a sign that game developers can still ask a premium price for premium content, and certainly Square Enix's games seem to have been doing well. Final Fantasy Tactics is another example -- a long-awaited game that was priced at $17.99 on the iPad.

Douglas does confirm that these games are selling well, but he also says that the pricing "has been commented on quite a lot in Europe in the West," and that the more traditional Japanese overseers of the company are "seeing the feedback, and there will probably be changes in the way that it's structured." At the same time, however, he says the Japanese hold the view that quality games should have a premium price, and he suggests (correctly so) that "$20 for something you can play for 30 or 40 hours is still cheaper than what you can get on a handheld."

So we'll have to see if Square Enix changes its pricing in the future. If anyone can command higher prices for these titles, it's obviously them, but it's also true that as prices drop, sales on the App Store tend to go up. So it's possible that Square Enix could sell more copies and make even more money with a larger potential audience if they go with a lower price.

Cray's Jaguar supercomputer upgraded with NVIDIA Tesla GPUs, renamed Titan

Cray's Jaguar supercomputer upgraded with NVIDIA Tesla GPUs, renamed Titan

Cray's Jaguar (or XK7) supercomputer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory has been loaded up with the first shipping NVIDIA Telsa K20 GPUs and renamed Titan. Loaded with 18,688 of the Kepler-based K20s, Titan's peak performance is more than 20 petaflops. Sure, the machine has an equal number of 16-core AMD Opteron 6274 processors as it does GPUs, but the Tesla hardware packs 90 percent of the entire processing punch. Titan is roughly ten times faster and five times more energy efficient than it was before the name change, yet it fits into the same 200 cabinets as its predecessor. Now that it's complete, the rig will analyze data and create simulations for scientific projects ranging from topics including climate change to nuclear energy. The hardware behind Titan isn't meant to power your gaming sessions, but the NVIDIA says lessons learned from supercomputer GPU development trickle back down to consumer-grade cards. For the full lowdown on the beefed-up supercomputer, hit the jump for a pair of press releases.

Xbox SmartGlass now available in Google Play, brings console integration to Android

Hot on the heels of the Dashboard update for the Xbox 360, Microsoft's SmartGlass integration is now a reality for Android 4.0 users. The companion app branches out from the earlier My Xbox Live app for Android and allows direct control of some console features from Google-powered gear. While Windows Phone users will find the tightest integration of all, the Android port still lets users steer through the Dashboard, input text, browse the web (with zooming), search for local content, and control media playback. Players can still chat with their friends and modify their Xbox profile if they're not planning to lurk around the system all day. The interface is strikingly similar to past releases (including Android) and still demands at least an 800 x 480 screen for admission -- sorry, Wildfire S fans. You'll find a full roster of features after the break, and can hit up Google Play at the source link below for your own remote.
