NASCAR: Matt Kenseth's Chase Hopes Gone After AAA 400 at Dover

Matt Kenseth was hoping for a rebound performance in Sunday's AAA 400 at the Dover International Speedway. After finishes of 14th and 18th to start the Chase, a solid top-five finish was needed for him to get back into contention. Seeing as though Dover is one of his better racetracks, this was not an unreasonable prediction to make.

Unfortunately for Kenseth, the "Monster Mile" devoured his championship hopes, along with the track bar of his Ford Fusion.

For all intents and purposes, he is now eliminated from the championship hunt.

Buried in a 72-point hole, Kenseth is now dead last in the Chase field. The way Brad Keselowski, Jimmie Johnson and Denny Hamlin are all running, Kenseth could realistically win the next three races and make up very little ground. He has to rely on all of the other 11 Chasers to have multiple issues during the final seven weeks of the season, which will not happen.

The math may say otherwise, but he has no shot.

It really is amazing to think about how quickly his season has shifted from being quite successful to a borderline failure. He started the year off by winning the wackiest Daytona 500 in recent memory and consistently put together good finishes to maintain a firm hold within the top 10 in points.

He has never been one to rattle off wins in bunches, and that again was proven true this season. He came the closest to another victory in the Bristol spring race, where he recorded his only runner-up finish.

Even with his lack of wins, Kenseth led the points throughout the summer stretch. He never fell lower than fourth in points until the reset after Richmond, leading many to consider him a dark horse pick for the championship. After all, his consistency over the years has been second to none. It is widely accepted that his 2003 championship season, during which he won only once, was directly responsible for the introduction of the Chase format. He looked like a solid lock as someone who would stay in the title hunt.

Instead, he is now relegated to looking ahead to his fresh start with Joe Gibbs Racing next season. Seeing as though he will not be returning to Roush Fenway Racing, there is nothing left to do but try to go for victories these final seven races. Otherwise, he will not be able to salvage anything from his dismal start to this year's Chase.

It truly was a season that started with such promise, but has now ended in relative disaster.

Study Of The Credibility Of Health Messages On Twitter

People are more likely to trust health messages tweeted by doctors who have a lot of followers, but not the messages they retweet, according to researchers. A study of the credibility of health messages on Twitter showed that credibility dips when doctors who have a large number of Twitter followers passed on messages, instead of composing their own tweets, said Ji Young Lee, a former master's degree student in media studies, Penn State...

The African Spiny Mouse Could Become A New Model For Research In Regenerative Medicine

A small African mammal with an unusual ability to regrow damaged tissues could inspire new research in regenerative medicine, a University of Florida study finds. For years biologists have studied salamanders for their ability to regrow lost limbs. But amphibian biology is very different than human biology, so lessons learned in laboratories from salamanders are difficult to translate into medical therapies for humans. New research in the journal Nature describes a mammal that can regrow new body tissues following an injury...

Cleveland Cavaliers: Is Now the Time for Cavs to Part Ways with G Daniel Gibson?

The second-longest-tenured Cavalier, Daniel Gibson, has become a fan favorite over the years with his ability to hit the three ball and overall scrappiness on the court.

Unfortunately, his time on the court has been few and far between the past few seasons, as Gibson has missed 72 games the past three years with various injuries.

Originally a second-round pick out of Texas by the Cavs in 2006, "Booby" has now spent the past six seasons in Cleveland.

His best performance was actually good in his rookie year, where he caught fire in the 2007 playoffs against the Detroit Pistons, scoring 62 points in the series' final three games, including 31 in Game 7 that sent the Cavs to the NBA Finals.

Largely hampered by injuries and big expectations that arose from that series, Booby has been a solid player when healthy but not a star that perhaps some thought he would be.

Last season was especially frustrating, as Gibson averaged 7.5 points on a career low 35.1 percent shooting from the field all while missing 31 games with injuries.

Many in Cleveland are frustrated with Gibson, and rightly so, but does it mean the end of the Booby era with the Cavs?

I say not so fast.

First off, Gibson isn't hurting the Cavs at all financially.

Entering the last year of his contract, Gibson is scheduled to make $4.7 million, with only $2.3 million guaranteed.

No matter what his play looks like this season, Gibson's expiring contract could be used as a valuable trade piece around the trade deadline. The Cavs are still well under the cap, so even if they choose not to trade Gibson his contract doesn't hurt them. At worst, they let the near $5 million come off their books and use the cap space for next summer's free agency.

Another reason to hang on to Gibson is the Cavs' lack of talent at the shooting guard position.

No. 4 overall pick Dion Waiters will get the bulk of the minutes no matter what his role is, but after him Gibson is the only natural shooting guard, with C.J. Miles and Alonzo Gee better suited at small forward.

When healthy, Gibson is one of the elite three-point shooters in the entire NBA. His career 41.6 percent mark from deep is sixth best among all active NBA players and 12th best in league history.

The Cavs were 13th in three-point percentage last season and 25th in the NBA in points per game.  Gibson can be a huge help to both categories in 2012-2013.

His skills go beyond the offensive side of the ball, however, as Booby has been labeled the Cavs' best perimeter defender by head coach Byron Scott. With Kyrie Irving struggling on the defensive end last season and Dion Waiters coming from a zone system at Syracuse, the Cavs need a reliable defender on the wing.

Best-case scenario?

Gibson, still only 26, has a career year and helps form a three-headed monster with Irving and Waiters in the Cleveland backcourt.

Worst-case scenario?

Booby spends most of the season on the trainers' table and the Cavs use his contract as a trade piece or use the cap space created by it in the offseason.

Either way, Cleveland can take away something positive from keeping Gibson on the team.

Booby's time with the Cavs may be coming to an end, but it would be foolish to let him go now.

Apple's Newsstand generates big profits for publisher Future

Magazine publishing company Future has had some closures lately, as its traditional magazine business isn't doing so well. But it turns out the iPad publishing business is rocketing right up: The company reports that Apple's Newsstand app has earned it over $8 million in the last year since the service began in October of 2011. As of last March, the company had over 12 million of the "container" app downloads (which are the free trial apps you download before actually purchasing magazine issues), and had seen over a half million sales. At this point, those numbers are even higher, and with more and more iPads out there in the wild, they're likely still growing.

Future's planning a lot more with this market as well, working on a brand new platform for putting these digital magazines together, announcing plans for new digital editions around the world, and new and better ways to monetize all of this digital content that it's creating. Hopefully Future can find a way for digital sales to help shore up its recent losses in print sales, and keep some of these much-beloved tech publications running.

Texas vs. Oklahoma State Good News, Bad News: 'Horns Have a QB, the D Stinks

There is some good news and bad news for Texas Longhorn fans after their 41-36 win over Oklahoma State.

The good news: You've got yourself a quarterback.

The bad news: Your defense has more holes than a chain-link fence.

Sure, Oklahoma State has a prolific offense. But Arizona, a 4-8 team last year, must be feeling pretty good that it only allowed 38 points in its 59-38 spanking of the Cowboys.

One or two plays where the defense gives up big yardage is slightly acceptable. Consistently getting confused on draw plays, crossing patterns, wheel routes, seam routes and...well, you get the picture...is not only frustrating but alarming as well.

It wasn't just confusion, it was youthful inexperience. Head coach Mack Brown has to be looking at his defensive coordinator with steely eyes and demanding some answers.

Texas quarterback David Ash went 28-of-35 for 304 yards. On the road. Impressive. Very impressive. Unfortunately, the Longhorn defense gave up 307 passing yards. That (lack) of defense puts your offense in a precarious position, especially when you're breaking in a new quarterback.

To be fair, Texas was without two of its defensive starters—linebacker Jordan Hicks (hip) and tackle Brandon Moore (illness) didn't make the trip to Stillwater, Oklahoma. Hicks is the team's leading tackler.

But it wasn't just about the interior defense, it was about the secondary. Over and over we saw defensive backs give the Cowboys' speedy receivers too much of a cushion.

Big chunks of yardage were gained on passing plays. J.W. Walsh, the backup quarterback to Wes Lunt, completed a 44-yard touchdown pass to Josh Stewart in the first quarter because cornerback Adrian Phillips didn't wrap up. You can't blame that on a starting tackle or linebacker not playing in the game. This was a failure in football fundamentals.

The rushing defense was just as horrific.

On just the second play of the game, Oklahoma State running back Joseph Randle galloped through the Texas defense on his way to a 69-yard touchdown. He finished the day with 25 carries, 199 yards and two touchdowns.

Should Longhorn fans be worried? Yes and no. David Ash's poise in the last two minutes of the game was off the charts. I'm a fan. That was a big-time performance in a hostile venue, and the kid has an arm.

But the defense?

It faces West Virginia next week. Geno Smith must be salivating.

Tim Cook apologizes to iOS 6 Maps users

The "letter from the CEO" tradition at Apple has continued into the Tim Cook era, as Apple's chief executive has released a letter to customers regarding the ongoing iOS 6 Maps issues.

While the challenges and shortcomings of Maps have been obvious to most (with a few notable exceptions), Cook's direct admission that Maps "fell short on [Apple's] commitment" to "deliver the best experience possible for our customers" may help the situation somewhat.

Interestingly, the letter suggests that users who are frustrated by Maps can avail themselves of third-party apps via the App Store -- or use the web versions of Google or Nokia's maps and bookmark them to the home screen. This workaround has certainly been mentioned in plenty of other contexts, but to have Apple's CEO come out and effectively say "Here, give our competitors' mapping products a go" is quite eyebrow-raising.

Full text of the letter below.

To our customers,

At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers. With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better.

We launched Maps initially with the first version of iOS. As time progressed, we wanted to provide our customers with even better Maps including features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration, Flyover and vector-based maps. In order to do this, we had to create a new version of Maps from the ground up.

There are already more than 100 million iOS devices using the new Apple Maps, with more and more joining us every day. In just over a week, iOS users with the new Maps have already searched for nearly half a billion locations. The more our customers use our Maps the better it will get and we greatly appreciate all of the feedback we have received from you.

While we're improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app.

Everything we do at Apple is aimed at making our products the best in the world. We know that you expect that from us, and we will keep working non-stop until Maps lives up to the same incredibly high standard.

Tim Cook
Apple's CEO

New Java zero-day covers all versions, could affect Macs

First the bad news: a rather serious zero-day exploit has been discovered in all currently-supported versions of Java. And yes, this sort of exploit can be used to hijack a machine. Now the good news: Apple stopped bundling Java back in 10.6, and this exploit is a proof-of-concept and has been submitted to Oracle, who should be working on a fix as we speak.

If you don't need Java, we don't recommend installing it on Lion or Mountain Lion machines. If you do use Java, always be sure to install the latest patches. Oracle is due to issue more patches in mid-October.

Bottom line: this exploit is NOT in the wild, has not been seen active on any machines, but exists as a flaw in Java. Unless someone independently discovers it and decides to actually exploit the flaw, you'll be fine -- and a patch should be coming soon.

Paris: Lamborghini developing Urus while still awaiting green light

While much of the focus for Lamborghini at the Paris Motor Show was on its new strategy for the Gallardo line using styling cues to differentiate the rear-wheel-drive, all-wheel-drive and Superleggeria models, the Italian automaker is continuing development of its Urus SUV, even though it has not yet gotten final approval yet.

Stephan Winkelmann, the firm's CEO and president, confirmed to Autoblog that he is confident the project will be approved by the VW Group, but has not yet received the final blessing and says much depends on the whether or not there will be a new architecture to underpin the vehicle. However, the fact that Porsche showed the Panamera Sport Turismo concept demonstrates that there is enough flexibility in that platform to perhaps support the Lamborghini concept.

Even if the go ahead is granted soon, Winkelmann doesn't expect the Urus to be ready for sale until 2017. In the meantime, the company is aggressively pursuing the new Gallardo strategy and promises to have its successor that goes beyond the current facelift ready by 2014. Next year, Lamborghini will busy itself with building the 20 Sesto Elemento carbon-fiber-intensive models as well as celebrating the company's 50th anniversary.

Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit tells Judge Koh to revisit Galaxy Tab 10.1 injunction

One of the hallmarks of the US judicial system is its seemingly inexhaustible system of appeals -- a system for which Samsung is likely most grateful at the moment. Its earlier entreaty to Judge Lucy Koh to have the Galaxy Tab 10.1 preliminary injunction lifted may have been denied, but the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit is giving the Korean company another bite at the Apple. That court has granted Samsung's request to have the injunction issue remanded so that the trial court can re-consider Samsung's motion to dissolve it. The ruling enables Samsung to argue that the injunction should be lifted because the jury failed to find infringement of the tablet design patent upon which the injunction is based. Will Judge Koh lift the ban? Perhaps, but we're pretty sure that the crowd from Cupertino will be doing plenty to prevent that from happening. Stay tuned.

"Guide Dog" player and sightless guild-mate honored with in-game items

'Guide Dog' player and sightless guildmate honored with ingame items
Back in January, Lisa Poisso posted a touching story about two players, Hexu, an enhancement shaman played by British Army soldier Ben Shaw, who, while serving in Iraq, was involved in an incident with a roadside bomb in Basra. He suffered multiple shrapnel wounds and had to have both eyes surgically removed. Despite this, Hexu has accepted many challenges, including WoW raiding.

But how does a sightless player raid? Well, that's where Davidian comes in. Davidian is a Death Knight, played by a Scotsman named Owen, and is Hexu's in-game guide. He uses a series of macros, both on Hexu's machine and his own, to help Hexu perform in-game actions from repairs to killing Deathwing, the two even ranking side by side in DPS.

Why are we repeating this story? Well, Blizzard has honored Hexu and Davidian with two in-game items: Hexu's Amplifying Helm, and Davidian's All-Seeing Eyes. The item descriptions on the tooltips are particularly touching: "A man with a friend is never without vision" and "Sharp enough to see for two men" respectively. I was really touched by this, and so are Hexu and Davidian's guild, Die Safe, who have posted a thread on the EU forums thanking Blizzard for this recognition.

Netflix for iOS has second screen remote control for PS3

There's a sweet feature that's hidden in Netflix's mobile apps for iOS and Android, in the form of a remote for Netflix on Sony's PlayStation 3, Engadget reports.

When you use the iPad or iPhone app to play a video while on the same network as a PlayStation 3 (also running Netflix), you'll see an option to watch on your device or the PlayStation. Opt for the latter, and you can control the PS3 playback with your iOS device.

It's a very cool feature that must have been implemented only recently (which is probably why it's poorly documented). Unfortunately, this trick seems to be limited to the PS3. As long as Netflix can see which devices you're logged in on, however, it should be able to control them as well. We can expect to see more of this cross-device app action in the future, especially as cloud apps and services like this become more and more prevalent.

A Step Closer To Personalized Medicine For Multiple Sclerosis As Researchers Define 2 Categories Of MS Patients

There are approximately 400,000 people in the United States with multiple sclerosis. Worldwide, the number jumps to more than 2.1 million people. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach to treating the millions with multiple sclerosis, what if doctors could categorize patients to create more personalized treatments? A new study by researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) may one day make this idea a reality in the fight against the debilitating autoimmune disease...

ZTE Engage cleared to land at Cricket on October 2nd for $250

ZTE Engage cleared to land at Cricket on October 2nd for $250

We recently caught first sight of the ZTE Engage at a press event in New York, but while Cricket was more than happy to let us play with its latest smartphone, the carrier stopped short of providing us with its pricing or arrival date. All of that changed this afternoon, as we now know that the ZTE Engage will become available on October 2nd with a no-contract price of $250. As a quick refresher, the handset will feature a near-stock Android 4.0 environment and a Snapdragon S2 SoC with a CPU that's clocked at 1.4GHz. Other relevant specs include a 4-inch WVGA (800 x 480) TFT-LCD display, an 8-megapixel rear camera with a VGA front-facing counterpart and a 1,900mAh battery. For complete details, you'll find the full PR right after the break.

Amazon rejects Apple's false advertising claim in App Store suit

Amazon.com has filed a statement in Apple's ongoing claim against the online retail giant, saying that the generic use of the term "app store" is not a violation of Apple's "App Store" trademark. Amazon also asked for judgment regarding the suggestion that its use of "Appstore" to describe its own Android marketplace would be considered false advertising, in an attempt to somehow convince customers that the marketplace was related to Apple's own iOS App Store. Amazon also cites Steve Jobs and other Apple executives as calling competitors' markets "app stores" as well.

Apple has trademarked the phrase "App Store," in reference to its own very popular iOS apps marketplace. But Amazon says this isn't even a question of trademark just yet -- it's simply trying to get a judge to agree that using the phrase "appstore" isn't false advertising. We should hear a decision on this filing coming up sometime soon.

My cheap, simple livestreaming rig: iPhone, Ustream, Zagg and Clingo

The challenge: On short notice, I was asked to stream holiday services from my wife's synagogue so that homebound congregants and college students could attend at a distance. "Sure," I said, before I really thought it through.

My preferred setup for a reliable video stream would include a MacBook Pro running Adobe's free Flash Media Encoder or Livestream's Procaster, quality FireWire-compatible DV/HDV camera and an Ethernet connection for predictable connectivity -- although I wouldn't dismiss Livestream's adorable and compact $495 Broadcaster hardware streaming kit (to say nothing of the company's $8,500 Studio all-in-one switcher). All of this gear would need room and power to operate, which is rarely a problem at concerts or other events I've streamed from the temple. In this case, however, the pews would be full and there'd be no room to run power cables and networking across the floor.

Instead, I threw together the above configuration, which is admittedly low-fi and low-rent but worked surprisingly well. It starts with a Zagg Sparq 2.0 portable battery pack (model discontinued, but there are subsequent units). The Sparq's onboard battery will easily charge an iPhone 4S several times over; plenty of juice for hours of streaming without having to string an extension cord.

Next up, a Clingo universal car mount. This articulated arm has a suction cup mount on one end and a sticky, figure-eight pad on the other end. The adhesion pad is strong and reusable but easy to detach from the phone without leaving marks or residue. The advantage over a full-back or bracket mount is easy to deduce: the smaller contact area meant that I could securely mount the phone without covering the back camera. The smooth plastic shell of the Sparq, in turn, made an ideal suction cup mounting surface.

Finally, the iPhone 4S, plugged into the Sparq and running Ustream's free broadcasting app. I started with the older broadcast-only app; I could (and should) have been using the new version that supports viewing as well. Some users have reported instability in the combo app, and I wanted to be able to leave this running unattended in a corner, but the difference in quality between the year-old Broadcaster app and the new app is pretty substantial. At that point, all that's left to do is plug it in, check for WiFi coverage, aim it to the front and hit the button.

As you can see, there's some modeling clay weighting the Zagg in the picture; although it's pretty substantial, depending on the arm angle the iPhone had a tendency to tip. I used a beanbag on site to keep it stable. Later on, I dug out my Glif and a standard tripod to give me some flexibility with the camera placement, but if I faced a situation that called for this combo I'd definitely use it again.

Yes, the sound quality's not great, you've got no zoom, and there are plenty of other issues. But in a pinch, this is the sort of setup that lets you stream an event with only wireless bandwidth and your iPhone -- and if that's not living in the future, I don't know what is.

Nissan Terra concept takes you and your fuel cell off the beaten path

Your average fuel cell powered car is something like the Mercedes B Class F-Cell: tiny, light and hugely efficient. Nissan is trying to break that rather restrictive preconception with its latest concept, the Terra. Like its cross-prefixed predecessor, the Xterra, and similarly quirky Juke, the Terra is designed to take the rougher road while cosseting its occupants in a particularly trick interior featuring both a dashboard that's actually a removable tablet. The idea is you can take it inside and keep tabs on your car, but we wonder what happens when you leave it sitting by the bed as you groggily stagger out to your vehicle in the morning.

Impractical concept car interior design decisions aside, the machine is powered by a trio of electric motors (yes, three) driving all four wheels and receiving their power from Nissan's latest hydrogen-powered fuel cell. Nissan says this unit costs just one sixth that of its predecessor, but presumably such a system has a long way to go before it can be placed in a reasonably priced machine. No word on what this might cost -- if indeed it ever goes into production. This one, we think, isn't too likely.

WoW Moviewatch: Anton Pourqoi - No Rerolls, episode 2

We got to see the first episode of Anton Pourqoi last week. True to word, the AFK Players return now with the second episode in the series. The second installment has the same amazing graphics, sense of humor, and incredible flow as the first one.

Unfortunately for my time in the august Alliance, this is exactly how I'll picture Anduin from now on. His voice somehow perfectly matches the character's appearance, and this is how I imagine him acting. I doubt this interpretation is what Blizzard had in mind, but I'm stuck with it now.

Also, this is exactly how Pet Battles should happen. This is the best Pet Battle video ever. I'm just saying.

Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! Have suggestions for machinima we ought to feature? Toss us an email at moviewatch@wowinsider.com.

Mechanism By Which Tumor Suppressor MIG6 Triggers Cell Suicide

Death plays a big role in keeping things alive. Consider the tightly orchestrated suicide of cells - a phenomenon essential to everything from shaping an embryo to keeping it free of cancer later in life. When cells refuse to die, and instead multiply uncontrollably, they become what we call tumors. An intricate circuitry of biochemical reactions inside cells coordinates their self-sacrifice. Tracing that circuitry is, naturally, an important part of cancer research. In a major contribution to that effort Dr...

The Five Stages Of Grief

Moving through the traditional stages of grief can be as unpredictable as playing a pinball machine, with triggers of sorrow acting like pinball rudders to send a mourner into a rebound rather than an exit, according to a case study by a Baylor University researcher and a San Antonio psychologist. For some, grieving is complete after the loss is accepted. But for others, such events as the anniversary of a death or a scene that jogs the memory can send them slamming into grief again, according to a case study by Margaret Baier, Ph.D...

Mists of Pandaria Contest: Convince the Pandaren to join your faction

Jesse Cox and Ian Beckman are working with Blizzard to run one of the most interesting contest ideas I've seen in a while. Essentially, you create a video to convince the pandaren to join your particular faction. The winner for each faction gets a pretty awesome prize pack.

The promotional video above has all the juicy details, so check it out to get a deeper understanding of the contest. I'm pretty excited to see what the entries are like; you've got to love a contest the encourages creativity in the community.

Also, they should choose Alliance.

It's open warfare between Alliance and Horde in Mists of Pandaria, World of Warcraft's next expansion. Jump into five new levels with new talents and class mechanics, try the new monk class, and create a pandaren character to ally with either Horde or Alliance. Look for expansion basics in our Mists FAQ, or dig into our spring press event coverage for more details!
