Apple TV may get HBO Go in first half of 2013

Could it finally happen? Bloomberg is reporting that Apple is "in negotiations" with HBO to bring HBO Go to the Apple TV in app form during the first half of 2013. As our fearless leader Victor Agreda pointed out upon hearing the news, "Of course they're in negotiations -- they're in them all the time with everyone, and have been forever." (That's paraphrased, but you get the gist.)

Still, the prospect that another major streaming app may finally be on our Apple TVs sooner rather than later is enough to get us excited. Unfortunately, it sounds like the dream of getting HBO Go sans a cable and HBO subscription is still just that: a dream. According to Bloomberg's piece, you'll still need to have HBO as part of your cable package in order to use the app on Apple TV.

OWC shows NuGuard KX rugged cases, 3.5" Viper SSD at Macworld 2013

Other World Computing is a popular manufacturer and seller of a big line of Apple-friendly hardware, and as usual they have a commanding presence at Macworld/iWorld 2013. Among the new products the company announced this year are the NuGuard KX rugged cases for iPhone and an upcoming 3.5-inch SSD under the Viper label that will provide high capacity and incredible speed.

OWC shows NuGuard KX rugged cases, 35' Viper SSD at Macworld 2013

The NewerTech NuGuard KX cases are Mil-Std-810G compliant, which means that the cases can take a drop of 4 feet without damage to the enclosed iPhone. The company tested them to much more extreme conditions, including 20-foot drops in the factory and a mammoth drop from the top of OWC's wind turbine (see video below).

The cases come in a variety of colors and have a lifetime warranty -- not something you see with many other iPhone cases. OWC also offers a 30-day guarantee, so if you decide you don't like the NuGuard KX, you can send it back for a refund.

But the big -- in terms of capacity -- news from OWC was the announcement of the Viper SSD. This 3.5-inch format drive will be available later this year in capacities up to 2 TB. The combination of SSD speed and huge capacity will make this SSD a winner for video editors and the like. At this point, the company has not announced shipping dates or pricing for the Viper.

The company will also be selling a commercial version of the Power2U USB wall outlet. According to Corporate Account Manager and OWC spokesman Alan Bitterman, the new version will be especially useful in hospital and hotel installations.

And last, but not least, the company was showing an amazing swivel arm mount for the iMac, Apple Cinema Display and Thunderbolt Display -- the Newertech NuMount Pivot Desk Mount ($189.00). It won't work with the new 2012 iMacs -- OWC notes that the aluminum is "too thin" to allow this type of mounting.

If you're at Macworld/iWorld 2013, be sure to drop by the OWC booth and tell 'em you read about their product line on TUAW.

Risk Of Unwarranted Pregnancies With Morning After Pill Conscience Clauses

Ban or enhance clauses, but don't leave this muddle, say pharmacists Conscience clauses, which allow pharmacists to opt out of providing the "morning after pill" without a prescription, risk unwanted pregnancies and undermine the principle of universal healthcare in the NHS, say pharmacists in the Journal of Medical Ethics. These clauses should either be banned or enhanced so that pharmacists and patients know exactly where they stand, rather than the current "fudge", which serves nobody well, the authors conclude...

Official: Ferrari names new F1 car F138

Ferrari F138 Logo

Don't call it the F150. Ferrari has officially announced it will name its newest Formula One car the F138. The machine is the 59th car Ferrari has built to compete in F1, and it's also the last of the company's F1 efforts to rely on a high-strung V8 for propulsion. F1 rules have changed for next year, forcing competitors to use smaller cylinder counts to get around the track. Ferrari has already said it will use a 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 to do its dirty work. That moves brings an end to the eight-year reign the V8 enjoyed.

Ferrari isn't saying much more about the 2013 car, and the only image we have to go on at the moment is the logo you see above. Stay tuned for more information, and in the interim, be sure to check out the painfully brief press release below.

Daily iPhone App: Heroes and Castles combines action and tower defense into one game

Heroes and Castles is the latest game from the guys at Foursaken Media (who, I believe, I first met up with at Macworld around this time last year). It's a little bit more involved than anything else I've seen them do -- on the surface, I'd probably compare it most to the great Dungeon Defenders, a really excellent game on iOS or Steam that you should check out if you haven't yet.

Heroes and Castles isn't quite as well-polished as Dungeon Defenders, but it is a lot of fun. It's a third-person action game, where you play as a fantasy character either hacking and slashing or casting spells against oncoming waves of baddies. But the twist here is that it's also a tower defense game: In addition to your own attacks, you can also buy an army to help you fight off enemies, or buy repairs and defenses for the town you're protecting. There's a lot of depth here: In addition to three different player classes, there are lots and lots of various units and defenses to unlock as you play along.

Heroes and Castles isn't a perfect game -- the graphics leave a little something to be desired at times (though they also shine in the right places), and the touchscreen controls are a little too simple for a game that is as deep as this one. That camera, especially, is sometimes tough to turn around, especially when you need to see where your wall is being attacked on a moment's notice. But for US$1.99, Heroes and Castles is a great bargain of a game -- it's the most impressive outing I've seen from Foursaken yet, and it's a great action/RPG/defense title that's well worth the purchase.

Moxtra app for iPad gives you binders full of shareable content

In the ultra-cloud, post-PC era, we do not lack for ways to share our stuff. Got a presentation deck to show? You can go full-on web meeting with Webex, GoToMeeting, Join.me or Fuze Meeting; to create the content and share it smoothly, Slideshare or Sliderocket will serve, as would either Google or Microsoft's online presentation framework. A document or a spreadsheet: Google Drive, Dropbox, Box.com, Dolly Drive or Egnyte. And if you're organizing your thoughts into notebook form, fan-favorite Evernote has your back.

There's a bit of daylight between these platforms, though. If you want to build out a collaborative project book with the ability to include movies, sounds, PDFs, comments and annotations in an indexed "everything bucket" and share it selectively, you could do that in Evernote -- but you give up the ability to set a specific, front-to-back order and a solid presentation layer or web meeting front-end, or record your own narration to go with the show.

If you go with something like Sliderocket, you get a slick presentation with powerful sharing options, narration, analytics and web meetings built in, but you are locked into the slide format; no arbitrary media and shifting content. Neither of those approaches provides a full annotation layer atop the content, with highlights and text notes in context rather than off to the side.

That gap of daylight between pure presentation form and remember-everything functionality is where you'll find Moxtra, a new iPad app and suite of cloud services launching today. Founded by veterans of Cisco's WebEx division, the app is built around the concept of a shelf full of virtual binders, each one collecting whatever you need for that project, topic or area of interest. Moxtra's binders are digital portfolio cases, holding any document or media that you like. Binders are put together on the web or on the iPad -- an example of content curation, if not outright creation -- and you can easily narrate and share a slideshow edition that will play anywhere.

Adding pages of content to a binder is easy, with several pathways to get at your stuff. From the desktop, you can clip images or web pages right to the service; in fact, web pages can be "live" within a binder so that they'll always show the current version of the page. Cloud services like Box and Dropbox are accessible from the iPad app, so any of your files there in readable formats (PDF, images, movies, Office files and more) can be downloaded and converted to binder pages. You can take photos or video with the iPad camera, or access your existing photo library on the device. Most helpfully, there's a small desktop agent that you can install on your Mac or PC; it opens up your entire hard drive for remote access, so you can grab files at will as long as your machine is online. (One hopes Moxtra will add an extra security PIN or other challenge for users who have this access turned on -- yes, it's read-only, but it's still a lot of exposure if your iPad is stolen or compromised.)

You decide whether to keep a binder private, share to the world (via Facebook) or selectively to invited guests/collaborators. You decide if they get view-only access, or the opportunity to edit and contribute to the binder with you. There's a full commenting and annotation layer, showing anything you choose to highlight or amend. In fact, if you record narration while you swipe through the pages in a binder, every annotation step will be recorded along with it in real time; the resulting movie is saved to your iPad photo album, and you can share that out as well if you choose.

Just as you can share your binders to others, when other people share binders to you they'll show up on your binder bookshelf, with indicators showing how long they are, how many comments they have and how many people have access. Every action in every binder is logged to your Updates screen, so you can always track back and see what's been changed. It's a very personal news feed covering the things you're working on.

The Moxtra team sees this product tacking back and forth between personal and team project management, with a lightweight client supported by several heavy-hitting cloud services. The Moxtra Cloud connectors pull in your files from your desktop or other storage providers; Moxtra Binder is the main iPad collection tool. Moxtra Note is the annotation and recording facility, and Moxtra Meet is the simultaneous web meeting tool. Did I not mention that already? Yes, you can deliver a WebEx-style presentation online right from Moxtra, including VoIP audio; participants can join from their desktop browsers with ease (and also presumably from the Moxtra app itself, although I wasn't able to test this).

How would you use Moxtra? Home improvement projects, travel diaries, distance learning... the company's site shows a few other ideas, but you can come up with your own. Since Moxtra's editing facilities are limited to rearranging or replacing pages in the binder, you're not going to be creating your stuff directly within it; but when the task is to show and discuss what you're working on, it's got possibilities. The current version has some rough edges, but the company plans to evolve the product rapidly over the next few months.

Moxtra is free for the time being, with the possibility of premium plans for high-demand users further down the road. You can download Moxtra in the App Store or sign up at moxtra.com.

Report: Fiat 500 least safe vehicle to drive according to insurance website [w/video]

Fiat 500 crash test

When the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crashed a 2012 Fiat 500, the little car got the best scores in all categories. It's a safe car, then, right?

"If safety is a priority, you should avoid the smallest cars," advises Russ Rader, spokesperson for IIHS. "Weight counts. Smaller, lighter cars are safer than they used to be, but all things being equal, people riding in bigger, heavier vehicles get more protection in crashes."

That's why, despite its near-perfect crash-test score, the Fiat 500 is No. 1 on Insure.com's list of worst vehicles for protecting passengers from injuries. In an accident with a larger object, the Fiat's safety cage and array of air bags do what they can to protect passenges, but like eggs in a coffee can, the passengers get thrown about and smashed up.

If the Fiat 500 is like a coffee can, then a fullsize GMC pickup (which tops the website's list of vehicles best at protecting passengers) would be a 50-gallon barrel. In a collision between the two, the barrel of eggs will win every time. The GMC Sierra 1500 is rated best at protecting passengers by Insure.com, but IIHS rated it just average in the side impact test and marginal in the roof strength test. Second place on Insure.com's best list is the Porsche Cayenne, which has not been tested by IIHS. The third through fifth place spots go to the GMC Yukon, Sierra 2500 and Terrain.

The listings are the result of Insure.com's analysis of personal injury protection and medical payment claims which affect what car owners are charged for insurance.

Check out videos of the IIHS crash test of the Fiat 500 as well as the 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 below.

Pau Gasol Needs to Stop Whining with LA Lakers Now Winning

Pau Gasol had this to say to ESPN, after the Lakers pulled out a home victory against the New Orleans Hornets:

"I think the finishing is more important (than starting). I think the best players should finish off games. That's just the way it's got to be. When the game is on the line, you want to be on the floor. That's more important."

Pau Gasol deserves plenty of credit for vaulting the Los Angeles Lakers franchise from fringe playoff team to the championship strata. He's incredibly skilled, and a sure-fire Hall of Famer.

Of course, that's the complimentary setup that gives way to criticism. Because Pau Gasol is handling being benched as though it came out of nowhere, as though he lacks culpability in the matter.

First, let's look at the offense. On the season, Gasol is shooting .447 from the field, continuing a downward trend that began before Mike D'Antoni got there.

The Lakers are badly in need of spacing on account of playing two centers, and Gasol has been shanking from the outside. When you look at his 2012-2013 shot chart, you can see that his jumper hasn't been worth respecting for defenses (remember, "red" is "bad"):

With the exception of his elbow-extended sweet spot, Gasol can't find the range.

All that might be forgiven if Pau was a defensive force. The Lakers were an adequate offensive team, even when they were losing, and Gasol wasn't exactly killing them on that end with his downturn in production. But defensively, the Lakers are a mess, in part because Gasol's too slow for his position.

The reason Mike D'Antoni has given many of Pau's minutes to the rangy Earl Clark is more defense-based than offense-based. Clark can guard a variety of matchups, from wing players to power forwards. With his speed and athleticism, Earl Clark possesses the capacity to augment L.A.'s defense as something of a Shawn Marion lite.

It's not Gasol's fault that he's a lumbering seven-footer, but the Lakers must deal with that reality. It doesn't make much sense to have Gasol guard some of the quicker power forwards in the league, and also to match up against wing players who "go small" by playing at the 4-spot.

The ideal situation for Los Angeles is to give Pau minutes at his natural spot at center. D'Antoni is seeking to do that. Pau Gasol has also been productive over the past three Lakers victories, especially as a passer.

The issue with the strategy tweak has been Gasol's response to the perceived demotion:

If the Lakers are winning while optimizing Pau's potential, who sits or starts at the end shouldn't be an issue.

Of course, I do have some sympathy for the athlete's perspective here. Gasol has professional pride, and it's easier for me to say "accept your role" than it is for Pau to do so.

But for the Lakers to be successful with Gasol, the Spaniard needs to accept that he's a center, and a situation-specific one for as long as he plays with Dwight Howard.

Patch 5.2 PTR: PvP Interface gets a makeover

Patch 52 PTR PvP Interface gets a makeover
On the patch 5.2 PTR, the PvP interface has had a much-needed makeover. You can see the results above. The revamp has made the system far more intuitive to use, and brought it in line with the PvE queue screen.

Clicking one of the three lines on the left-hand side will bring up the various options available to earn that currency, or, in the case of War Games, a brief explanation on how this under-used feature works, and how to set up a War Game. Perhaps this will result in more players using them, but many still lament the absence of a skirmish system, and there doesn't seem to be a gap for it at present!

Moving to the right-hand side, the dice icon next to the Random Battleground is how players will choose which battlegrounds to blacklist. This could be considered an improvement on the current interface, but it's still not entirely obvious that that's what the icon does. In order to queue for specific battlegrounds other than Wintergrasp and Tol Barad, it is necessary to choose them from the drop-down menu at the top right of the screen.

Deep Fried Food Tied To Prostate Cancer

From doughnuts to French fries, eating deep fried food at least once a week is linked to a raised risk for prostate cancer, according to a new US study. The researchers did not investigate why the link exists, but suggest it could be because deep frying releases potentially cancer-causing compounds in the cooking oil or fat. The researchers, from the Public Health Sciences Division of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, write about their findings in the 17 January online issue of The Prostate...

Eddie Lack Injury Makes Roberto Loungo Trade Difficult for Vancouver Canucks

The Vancouver Canucks might have to keep star goaltender Roberto Luongo until the offseason after learning that top prospect Eddie Lack underwent hip surgery this week and will not be able to play for six months (via Team 1040 Radio in Vancouver).

Lack was the top candidate to back up No. 1 goaltender Cory Schneider if Luongo was traded, but now that Canucks general manager Mike Gillis doesn't have a reliable goalie to give Schneider a day off or replace him if he gets hurt, Luongo could spend the entire season in Vancouver.

There aren''t any quality goaltenders on the free-agent market either.

It would also be difficult to trade for a backup, since teams are less likely to give up goaltenders during a shortened season, when depth at this position is even more important than it is during a normal 82-game schedule.

With Lack unable to play for the rest of this season, trading Luongo makes very little sense. Trading Luongo and getting a backup as part of the return package would not help the Canucks, because if Schneider gets injured or fails to impress as a starter, Vancouver would be in trouble.

The 33-year-old veteran has already played in three games this season and will make his third start of the year on Wednesday night against the Colorado Avalanche.

Luongo has played well thus far, even though his stats don't look amazing. He has a 0-0-2 record with a 2.21 GAA and .917 save percentage this season.

He hasn't allowed more than two goals in any of his starts and his teammates have failed to give him much offensive support. Vancouver has scored an average of 1.67 goals per game with Luongo in net.

Gillis is under no pressure to trade Luongo before the trade deadline, even though the salary cap goes down to $64.3 million for the 2013-14 season.

The Canucks have the entire summer to trade Luongo and there will likely be a few teams looking to upgrade their goaltending depth and talent during the offseason, especially the ones who miss out on top free agents such as Niklas Backstrom.

Luongo will have nine years left on his contract this summer, but as an elite goaltender, he should have some value to a number of teams.

While getting rid of Luongo's cap hit should be a priority for Gillis before next season, trading him needs to be more than a salary dump for Vancouver.

Even though he has a large contract that is not cap-friendly, Luongo is too talented to be moved for middle-round draft picks and/or middle-tier prospects. There's no reason for Gillis to move Luongo without acquiring at least a second-line forward in return.

Lack's injury doesn't mean that Luongo will definitely remain in Vancouver for the entire 2013 season, but it makes trading the veteran goaltender before the deadline a riskier move for Gillis because his team's goaltending talent/depth would be severely weakened.

For the Canucks to have the best chance to hoist the Stanley Cup in June, Luongo must remain on the roster until the summer.

Study Identifies Potential Therapeutic Target To Treat Autism, Schizophrenia, And Epilepsy

Synapse development is promoted by a variety of cell adhesion molecules that connect neurons and organize synaptic proteins. Many of these adhesion molecules are linked to neurodevelopmental disorders; mutations in neuroligin and neurexin proteins, for example, are associated with autism and schizophrenia. According to a study in The Journal of Cell Biology, another family of proteins linked to these disorders regulates the function of neuroligins and neurexins in order to suppress the development of inhibitory synapses...

Spy Shots: 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class interior caught in spy shots

2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class spy shots

With the redesigned 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class getting closer to production, the camera-wielding crew over at Autospies somehow managed to get inside of the car to snap some detailed spy shots. As the prototypes continue to shed camouflage, it would appear that Mercedes-Benz is getting closer to unveiling the car, and with the Geneva and New York auto shows coming up, it could be sooner rather than later.

From what we can see of this car's interior, the overall look of the S-Class' cabin isn't a ground-breaking departure from the current car, but it has been completely redesigned with more advanced technology. The styling is now even more upscale with larger swaths of wood, more shapely door panels (without the built-in armrest cubbies) and the concept-like two-spoke steering wheel. The highlight of this car though is probably the two massive digital screens with one being used for driver information and the other used for navigation, audio and infotainment systems. One other detail we noticed about this car is that it was equipped with the new 360-degree camera that debuted on the new GL-Class and will also be used on the 2014 E-Class. We also know that the next-gen S-Class will be getting the new cloud-based MBrace2 infotainment system.

As for the exterior design, it looks like the next S-Class will carry a similar profile as the current car, but we can see through the camouflage that the new styling will fit in better with current Mercedes-Benz products. Up front, the grille is much larger is flanked by aggressive LED-trimmed headlights, while the rear view of the car shows us the LED brake light now at the top of the rear window, a more pointed trunk opening and a more squared-off rear fascia with exhaust outlets pushed to the corners.

Blood Pact: Taking care of your DoTs

Blood Pact Taking care of your DoTs MON
Every week, WoW Insider brings you Blood Pact for affliction, demonology, and destruction warlocks. This week, Megan O'Neill admits to problems with DoT clipping (*gasp*) and finds a way to fix it.

Every warlock has at least one damage over time effect to take care of. Destruction has Immolate. Demonologists flip between Corruption and Doom (Metamorphosis), though I suppose you could count Shadowflame off Hand of Gul'dan as one. Affliction is the "DoT spec," starring Agony, Corruption, Unstable Affliction, with appearances of Haunt.

'Achilles Heel' Of Key HIV Replication Protein Discovered

Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine may have found an "Achilles heel" in a key HIV protein. In findings published online in Chemistry and Biology, they showed that targeting this vulnerable spot could stop the virus from replicating, potentially thwarting HIV infection from progressing to full-blown AIDS. Previous research demonstrated that a small HIV protein called Nef interacts with many other proteins in infected cells to help the virus multiply and hide from the immune system...

Apple yanks Vine from Featured Apps section after porn debacle

Apple yanks Vine from Featured Apps section after porn debacle If you were to ask me for a few tips on starting a new video-centric social app, I would probably be able to offer you very little advice. That said, one thing I can guarantee I wouldn't recommend is to push grotesque porn to every users' feed just as they're having their morning coffee. That's just what Vine did -- allegedly due to "human error" -- and TechCrunch reports that it was enough to get the app yanked from the Featured section of the App Store.

As you might imagine, Apple wasn't the only one a bit upset by Vine's untimely adult content, and many early adopters have openly declared that they will never use the app again. Twitter, which owns Vine, has apparently taken this incident as a sign that it needs to take the porn problem seriously, and will begin a more aggressive approach to filtering it out. Whether that will help the app regain its place in Apple's hallowed promo section remains to be seen.

Report: Watch Where You Store: Minneapolis man busted for driving, crashing customer's Lamborghini

"Looking for a company you can trust? Look no further!" says the boldface type on Top Gear Autoworks' website, an automotive service, repair and storage shop in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Not a very wise move, say the local authorities, after recently arresting David Juntunen, the 40-year-old male owner of the shop, and charging him with insurance fraud after an unauthorized - and destructive - late-night joyride in a customer's Lamborghini.

According to the official report, in late 2011 a customer entrusted Top Gear Autoworks to store a 2007 Lamborghini Gallardo through winter. Believing the car was tucked safely away for the next several months, probably sucking on a trickle charger, the owner suspended its collision insurance.

Everything seemed fine until March 9, 2012. That was when the State alleges that Juntunen and Pamela Dupont (a 41-year-old lady friend) plowed the Italian exotic into a few trees and a couple light poles at 2:00 AM. Instead of calling the cops to investigate, the two brought the vehicle back to the shop and Juntunen filed his own insurance claim for the repairs (the damage estimate was $82,480 for the car and $10,000 for destroyed property) saying the vehicle was simply being moved between his facilities. The insurance company, after doing a bit of investigation and learning that a Lamborghini had been witnessed driving at a high rate of speed in the area by two different observers (including a police officer), denied the claim.

But there is always more to these stories. In a post-crash conversation, Juntunen told the owner of the Lamborghini that his earlier statements to the police constitute insurance fraud and he mentioned that Dupont wasn't behind the wheel. Most damning, however, was the discovery that he has a criminal history including third-degree criminal sexual conduct, third-degree burglary, motor vehicle theft and multiple alcohol-related driving convictions meaning any vehicle he operated was required to have an ignition interlock. Ugh.

Motorsports: The 2013 Rolex 24-hour race at Daytona comes down to the last hour [spoilers, w/video]

It took 24 hours to run the race, but it was the last one was stuffed with the high action as four cars were still trying to figure out how to gain victory on the track and in the pits. Along with the obligatory crashes, spins, mechanical issues and retirements had come numerous penalties, a double-digit number of full-course yellows and two hours of fog that turned early Sunday morning into a stretch of parade laps.

The final hour would make up for the morning - drivers who might have been happy just to get on the podium had a shot at victory as the end of the race approached, and that turned into a few gambles that paid off, and at least one that didn't...

Children Treated With Common Anti-Fever Medications At Increased Risk For Kidney Injury

6 Questions Redskins Must Answer This Offseason

The Washington Redskins made an unexpected playoff appearance in 2012, but the work is far from over. The ultimate is the Super Bowl, and the argument can be made that the Redskins are not only not championship-caliber, but they overachieved last season.

Mike Shanahan, Robert Griffin III and company should be eager to prove the doubters wrong, but there is a lot to do before the season starts. The defense is in shambles, the offense is unbalanced and the franchise quarterback's future under center is uncertain.

By no means should the Redskins be satisfied with their finish in 2012. It was a nice run, but the real work starts now. Only by answering certain personnel questions can the Redskins make the playoffs this season and make a possible run to the Super Bowl.

iBook Lessons: Advanced page flipping demo

iBook Lessons is a continuing series about ebook writing and publishing.

Much as I love iBooks' beautiful page scrolling, there's always room for improvement. By studying the way people interact with real books -- browsing for information and adjusting pages while reading -- the developers of the "Smart E-Book Interface Prototype" have added a lot of clever into the ebook.

A video demonstrating the interface follows. It presents some intriguing directions. The KAIST Institute of Information Technology Convergence, who produced this video, has an English-language summary page about their ongoing research.

It's a really impressive video for R&D work. Hopefully this kind of advance will soon make its way into consumer e-readers.

And, no matter what wiseacre YouTube commenters say, you probably shouldn't roll up your iPad and use it to swat any flies.

Hat tip, Jeremy Tregunna

TUAW Talkcast: Apple earnings, Macworld/iWorld preview, and more

Wow, we've got a lot to talk about tonight.

During the past week we saw Apple report record revenues, and the stock price promptly fell into the toilet. The annual Apple lovefest that is Macworld/iWorld starts on Thursday, with a hefty percentage of the TUAW staff making the pilgrimage to San Francisco. Twitter released a video tweet tool by the name of Vine, which is a lot of fun but may have some growing up to do.

These and more topics will be fuel for discussion on the TUAW Talkcast tonight. Unlike last week, we won't be experimenting with a Google+ Hangout (although that was a lot of fun...). Since it's really all about you, the community, do see if you can join us, won't you?

To participate, you can use the browser-only Talkshoe client, the embedded Facebook app, or download the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for +5 Interactivity, you should call in. For the web UI, just click the Talkshoe Web button on our profile page at 4 HI/7 PDT/10 pm EDT Sunday. To call in on regular phone or VoIP lines (Viva free weekend minutes!): dial (724) 444-7444 and enter our talkcast ID, 45077 -- during the call, you can request to talk by keying in *8.

If you've got a headset or microphone handy on your Mac, you can connect via the free X-Lite or other SIP clients (aside from Skype or Google Voice), basic instructions are here. Talk to you tonight!

Facebook app gets video recording and voice messages in new update

If you've enjoyed the ability to send voice messages to your Facebook contacts through the company's Messenger app, you'll be pleased to learn that a new update to the main Facebook app adopts the feature as well. Along with audio messaging, the update adds in-app video recording and sharing, which should ensure that your news feed becomes peppered with obnoxious videos from loved ones who may or may not understand how little you care about the trick they just taught their dog. Version 5.4 of the app is available now for download from the App Store.

Report: 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray convertible headed for Geneva debut

Chevrolet Corvette Stingray convertible

While most of the world is still coming down from all the hype surrounding the debut of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this month, we're already looking to the future. And according to Autoweek, the next chapter in the C7 story will unfold at the Geneva Motor Show in March. That's right, General Motors is reportedly using the Swiss stage as its venue to debut the Corvette Stingray convertible.

If this strikes you as odd, you aren't alone. After all, with a car that's such an American icon, we'd fully expect Chevrolet to unveil it here on our shores in either Chicago or New York. But according to Autoweek, GM is looking to boost export sales of its halo car, and since the C7 was engineered to compete with the world's best and brightest, showing it off in Geneva is somewhat of a smart move. What's more, those with sharp memories will recall that GM used the Geneva expo to debut the sixth-generation C6 Corvette convertible back in March 2004, so there's also a precedent.

Details surrounding the Corvette Stingray convertible are still slim, though we fully expect the 6.2-liter V8 and choice of either six-speed automatic or seven-speed manual transmissions to carry over unchanged. Prototypes spotted on the road showed the car fitted with a cloth convertible roof, as well.

The C7 Corvette Stingray coupe is expected to go into production in August, and Autoweek estimates production of the convertible to follow about three months later. The Geneva Motor Show kicks off on March 5, 2013, so stay tuned to this space for more information closer to that time.

In Rat Model, Social Isolation Leads To Greater Vulnerability To Addiction

Rats that are socially isolated during a critical period of adolescence are more vulnerable to addiction to amphetamine and alcohol, found researchers at The University of Texas at Austin. Amphetamine addiction is also harder to extinguish in the socially isolated rats. These effects, which are described this week in the journal Neuron, persist even after the rats are reintroduced into the community of other rats. "Basically the animals become more manipulatable," said Hitoshi Morikawa, associate professor of neurobiology in the College of Natural Sciences...

Artiphon's 'Instrument 1' is an iPhone powered multi-instrument, we go hands-on

Artiphon's Instrument One is an iPhone powered multi-instrument, we get hands-on

Music, MIDI and mobile? Seen that before, right? Well, yeah, but sometimes something comes along that surprises everyone. Artiphon's Instrument 1 is one such thing. And after all, there's more than one way to crack a nut. Artiphon's method involves creating a high-quality muli-instrument device that uses an iPhone or iPod touch as its brain. So, this is no plastic (bear with us) "appcessory." The Instrument 1 is made out of special quality African hardwood, and centers around an intentionally ambiguous design. There is a pair of high-quality custom speakers that give impressive 30W onboard sound. There is, of course, a line out and MIDI in / out too. The prototype we saw today doesn't have a built-in battery, but final production models will, making this a truly portable, complete solution. Dr Mike Butera, the firm's founder, was keen to explain to us that this is intended not to replicate one specific device (though it does a great job of guitar, violin, banjo and more), but rather to enable musicians to be able to work in a way they want to. The Instrument 1 works with any core MIDI enabled app, but there are plans to release a companion app for more detailed / custom mappings in the future. We got a private tour of the device, to tip-toe past the break for more.

The first thing we noticed was how authentic it felt. Authentic what? Well, ok, that's a little harder to explain. It definitely felt more like holding an instrument, than a MIDI device or an accessory component though. The oiled wood finish, metal speaker grilles and overall quality of the device make it feel like something you'd wield with care. The iPhone section is also pleasantly discreet. Sure, it takes somewhat center place, but at the same time keeps it out of the way when you're playing. Under the neck you'll also find some additional controls that steer the Instrument 1 in more dedicated instrument directions (bass mode for fret tapping, banjo mode with arpeggios etc). The small black box below the iPhone housing serves as a strum-surface (or when in violin mode, the area you "bow"), and the neck section is largely akin to a guitar neck, but when approached creatively, can be used in all manner of ways, such as drum-pads when resting on your lap. For those that want to know, it's currently sporting a 30-pin connector, but has room enough so that you can also use it with a lightning adaptor. There's also a physical volume control and a USB port.

As for the MIDI options... there are plenty. Polyphonic aftertouch, vibrato, versatile modulation and mapping, to name a few. There is an octave switch on the neck, also, so that you can get a wide range of musical notes with ease. Mike showed us that as there are two sensors on each neck-note, you can effectively cram two octaves into the same space too, should this better suit your needs. As mentioned above, currently this is the third prototype, but full production is expected soon. How much, then, does Artiphon want for the Instrument 1? That'll be $800 when it eventually rolls out towards the end of this year. A tall price for a MIDI controller perhaps, but you'll be replacing your entire band at the same time. Just don't tell them yet. Go south for the demo video.

Billy Steele contributed to this report.
