Bob Backlund Named 2013 WWE Hall of Fame Inductee

Wrestling legend Bob Backlund has been named as the next entrant into the WWE Hall of Fame.

It was announced Monday night during Raw. WWEGames broke the news on Twitter:

Backlund has had a long and storied career.

He was one of the biggest stars in the company in the late 1970s and in to the mid 1980s. Backlund was one of the best mat grapplers of his era.

He held the WWF Title for six years, from December 17, 1979 to December 26, 1983. It's the third-longest title reign in WWF/E history.

The loss came under controversial circumstances as Backlund's manager, Arnold Skaaland, threw in the towel while Backlund was locked in The Iron Sheik's Camel Clutch. Backlund himself never actually gave up.

It was used as a storyline during his second run in the company in the mid-'90s.

Backlund won the WWF Title again when he beat Bret Hart at the 1994 Survivor Series. Hart lost after his mother threw in the towel while Hart was locked in the Crossface Chickenwing.

The second reign paled in comparison to the first, as he lost the title to Diesel just three days later. That was the last that Backlund would have a role in the main-event picture.

Beyond his wrestling ability, Backlund was always a bit of an eccentric inside and outside of the ring. When asked for autographs, he would demand the person asking list every president in chronological order.

He joins Mick Foley in the Hall of Fame Class of 2013.
