Lowering Cholesterol - Long-term Multiple Drugs Effective

In a recent study it has been found that cholesterol therapy using multiple drugs over an extended period may be more effective than taking a single statin medication. In previous studies the benefits of using a combination of two or three drugs aimed to aggressively lower LDL (bad cholesterol) and raise HDL (good cholesterol) have been mentioned. This is the first one to show long term benefits over a period of 20 years. Patients who received a combination drug-therapy had much lower levels of LDL and triglycerides as well as higher HDL and less fatty buildup in the carotid artery...

Official: China's SAIC sets up shop in suburban Detroit

SAIC LogoShanghai Automotive Industry Corporation has opened a new North American headquarters in Birmingham, Michigan. The Chinese automaker says the facility will help build a stronger connection and further cooperation between U.S. manufacturers and their Chinese counterparts.

SAIC
refurbished a 30,000-square-foot building for its new HQ, which should employ around 100 people. Specifically, the location will help SAIC purchase the parts it needs from the strong base of local suppliers in the area while also coordinating import and export operations. The Chinese automaker says the facility will also house some technology and engineering research development, as well.

SAIC said the company chose Birmingham for the city's proximity to partners like General Motors as well as numerous parts suppliers. Michigan's pro-business environment didn't hurt the decision either. SAIC is the largest automaker on the Chinese stock market. Take a look at the full press release below for more information.

Griffin's Kiosk iPad mount now available

If you've been thinking about using an iPad for a customer kiosk in your business, but haven't figured out how to secure it, Griffin's new Kiosk may be just the solution.

The Kiosk comes in two versions -- the Floor Mount (US$299), which screws into a floor and lifts the iPad to 47.5" above floor height, and the Table Mount ($199) that mounts an iPad so it's sitting about a foot above a table.

The hardware to mount the Kiosk is included, and three interchangeable faceplates provide or deny access to the camera and home button. An included power cable runs through the center of the steel mount arm, keeping it protected at all times.

Since you'll also want to make sure that your customers are focused on your custom app or website, Griffin is also selling the Kiosk app ($2.99) in the App Store. Users can set up a defined home URL and web domain, have a home page reloaded after a pre-set time of non-use, set up a whitelist of allowable web domains or create a customizable URL shortcut buttons, ID the devices by number or name, and get notified by email if a device is unplugged, has a low battery, or is being abused by a user.

The Griffin Kiosk looks like a very good solution for business, and you can download a data sheet (PDF) with all of the details.

2012 NHL Free Agents: Justin Schultz Signs Contract with Edmonton Oilers

The Justin Schultz saga has officially come to an end.

The Edmonton Oilers announced Saturday afternoon that they have signed the 21-year-old defenseman to a two-year, entry-level contract.

Per the team's official Twitter account:

Sportsnet.ca's Mark Spector with the financial details of the contract, which are as expected:

Schultz's signing concludes one of the strangest NHL free-agency situations in years.

The British Columbia native was drafted 43rd overall in 2008 by the Anaheim Ducks, but after spending the last three years at the University of Wisconsin without signing an entry-level deal with Anaheim, Schultz was eligible for unrestricted free agency this summer.

However, the 6'1", 185-pound blueliner could not receive a cap hit higher than the $3.8 million—the maximum for entry-level contracts.

That unparalleled level of financial parody turned the Schultz sweepstakes into a 26-franchise recruitment race based on team dynamics alone.

By Thursday the player that some were calling the "crowning jewel of 2012 free agency" had narrowed his list of suitors down to five teams.

By today, that list was down to one.

The Edmonton Oilers.

Grabbing Schultz after an afternoon of waiting is a big step in the Oilers' rebuilding process. As Spector elaborates:

Schultz will enter the NHL after an impressive career at Wisconsin.

The offensive defenseman scored 18 goals and 47 points in 41 games in 2010-11, leading the Badgers and all WCHA rearguards in points.

Schultz then followed up that performance with 16 goals and 44 points in 37 games last season, leading all WCHA defensemen in points again and winning Wisconsin's team MVP trophy.

Now moving on to the NHL, he'll have big shoes to fill for an Edmonton defense that finished 23rd in the league last season.

No Oilers rearguard scored more than five goals in 2011-12, and the club's top four defensemen in terms of ice time—Jeff Petry, Ryan Whitney, Ladislav Smid and Corey Potter—combined for a miserable minus-35 rating over the course of the year.

Schultz will now step in as the Oilers' second-highest paid rearguard (behind only Whitney's $4.0 million cap hit) and could jump up to form the top defensive pairing in the league in first year in Alberta.

He'll join a youthful group, with only one player over age 29—Andy Sutton, 37—a group that's looking to reverse a trend of basement-dwelling in Edmonton.

The team hasn't finished outside of the league's bottom two teams in three years.

However, at least for today, the Oilers are the NHL's big winners.

Welcome to Edmonton, Justin Schultz.

Your decision was the right one.

Unraveling reticulate evolution in North American dryopteris (dryopteridaceae)

Background:
The thirteen species of Dryopteris in North America have long been suspected of havingundergone a complicated history of reticulate evolution via allopolyploid hybridization.Various explanations for the origins of the allopolyploid taxa have been suggested, andthough most lines of evidence have supported the so-called "semicristata" hypothesis, contention over the group's history has continued in several recent, conflicting studies.
Results:
Sequence data from nine plastid and two nuclear markers were collected from 73 accessionsrepresenting 35 species of Dryopteris. Sequences from each of the allopolyploids are mostclosely related to their progenitor species as predicted by the "semicristata" hypothesis.Allotetraploid D. campyloptera appears to be derived from a hybrid between diploid D.expansa and D. intermedia; D. celsa, from diploid D. ludoviciana x D. goldiana; and D.carthusiana and D. cristata, from diploid "D. semicristata" x D. intermedia and D.ludoviciana, respectively. Allohexaploid D. clintoniana appears to be derived from D.cristata x D.goldiana. The earliest estimated dates of formation of the allopolyploids, basedon divergence time analyses, were within the last 6 Ma. We found no evidence for recurrentformation of any of the allopolyploids. The sexual allopolyploid taxa are derived fromcrosses between parents that show intermediate levels of genetic divergence relative to allpairs of potential progenitors. In addition, the four allotetraploids are transgressive withrespect to geographic range relative to one or both of their parents (their ranges extendbeyond those of the parents), suggesting that ecological advantages in novel habitats orregions may promote long-term regional coexistence of the hybrid taxa with theirprogenitors.
Conclusions:
This study provides the first thorough evaluation of the North American complex ofwoodferns using extensive sampling of taxa and genetic markers. Phylogenies produced fromeach of three datasets (one plastid and two nuclear) support the "semicristata" hypothesis, including the existence of a missing diploid progenitor, and allowed us to reject all competinghypotheses. This study demonstrates the value of using multiple, biparentally inheritedmarkers to evaluate reticulate complexes, assess the frequency of recurrent polyploidization, and determine the relative importance of introgression vs. hybridization in shaping thehistories of such groups.

New Research Set To Soothe Colicky Babies - Volunteers Wanted In The Brisbane Metropolitan Area, Australia

Parents could soon have new tools to soothe the tummies and ease the cries of colicky infants, thanks to a new study at the Children's Nutrition Research Centre, School of Medicine, The University of Queensland. Study leader Tracy Harb said the research aimed to determine whether careful modifications to the diets of lactating mothers would ease the symptoms of colic in babies. "Colic is unexplained, persistent crying in an otherwise healthy baby and in spite of much research into the condition, its cause and its treatment remains unknown," Ms Harb said...

Tranexamic acid: less bleeding and less thrombosis?

Commentaries:The early administration of tranexamic acid (TXA) to bleeding trauma patients reduces all-cause mortality without increasing the risk of vascular occlusive events. Indeed, the risk of arterial thrombosis appears to be reduced with TXA. In this paper we hypothesize that TXA has an antithrombotic effect and explore potential mechanisms. These include inhibition of the inflammatory effects of plasmin, effects on platelets and effects on Factors V and VIII. If proven these antithrombotic effects would have major implications for the systemic use of TXA in surgical patients, where TXA has been clearly shown to reduce bleeding.

iBook Lessons: Adding ASL support to iBooks

iBook Lessons is a continuing series about ebook writing and publishing.

Bilingual books have existed for a long time. Bilingual ebooks have also shown a presence in online stores. Adding American Sign Language (ASL) editions to ebooks? That's a proposition that has been hard to accomplish although possible under current EPUB standards.

The reason is that video and text must coexist on the virtual page. That's hard to do with ebooks, and impossible in conventional books. With the iPad and iBooks Author, that challenge has now become possible.

Recently, author Adam Stone published his first ASL/English bilingual ebook. Called Pointy Three, it tells the story of a fork that's missing one of its prongs but not, as the description points out, its spirit. The fork journeys through the land of Dinnertime, having adventures and looking for a place where he belongs.

The book's possibly unique ASL/English approach offers something new and special. Stone explains that children who use both languages, or who are learning ASL, benefit from this bilingual approach. On his blog, he writes, "[It] is not simply an English story translated into ASL; it is a story created with both languages in mind, swirling around the creative consciousness."

His motivation sprang from a desire to let children play with both languages. With iBooks Author, Apple provided the perfect tool for his needs. "I want to show everybody that it can be done easily, quickly, and cheaply," he wrote on his blog. "You don't need to talk to a publisher; you are the publisher." He added in a note to TUAW that "Apple products constantly open new frontiers."

I had the pleasure of sitting down with him to discuss his journey into iBooks Author, and talk about how the tool had inspired him.

TUAW: So how did you first hear about iBooks Author? And did you immediately think about ASL?

Stone: I first heard about it during Apple's education event this past Winter. I'd already been experimenting with American Sign Language ebooks. I was trying to use Composer by Demibooks but I was having a lot of trouble with that particular tool.

When I saw the iBooks Author product I immediately knew it was perfect for what I had in mind. I work at P.S. 347 The ASL and English Lower School (it's an ASL/English bilingual school). I use ASL all day so it's always on my mind. (I dedicate the book to the school, in fact - at the end of the book.)

iBooks Author looked super easy to use. Obviously video was a prominent part of the iBooks Author presentation. The layout tools looked flexible. And I especially liked how it was already linked to the iBookstore; it meant that publishing it would be easy.

TUAW: How did you develop the story for Pointy Three? And did you always intend to be writing for children?

Stone: I wanted this book to be a point of inspiration for others. There are a lot of us who are concerned about the lack of ASL/English materials for children and who are thinking of ways to ameliorate that. So this book was first and foremost to set an example -- to tell others, "You can do this too! We all can do this!"

I wanted to do a children's book first. I'm already a first grade teacher; I read children's books every day. I think adults should read children's books more often. They really are magical.

Pointy Three came to me out of the blue about a week after the Apple presentation. I was sitting on the N train and suddenly I thought of a three-pronged fork. And I typed out the whole story using Notes on my iPhone. It hasn't changed very much since then. I think wanting to belong somewhere is such an universal theme. Any child can relate to that.

TUAW: What kind of development effort in terms of hours did it take to build this book?

Stone: I think it took me about 40 hours, max. I polished the story and shared it with a couple of friends. Then I found an illustrator, Joyce, and we met a couple of times where she showed me some sketches. Then I connected with Lauren, the ASL storyteller, and we did the whole video shoot in less than three hours in her living room in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I sent a rough edit of the video to Joyce and she did the illustrations based off Lauren's telling of the story.

The illustrations took about a month and half. That was the longest part of the development process--waiting for them to be done. When I got them, it was just a matter of cleaning them up, adding them into iBooks Author along with the video, laying them out just right with the text and changing the text to match the video and the illustrations. I showed a PDF version to a few people for edits, and then publishing.

I started around the middle of February, I think, and finished in mid-June.

TUAW: Were there any lessons you learned specifically about shooting video for inclusion in an iBooks Author product?

Stone: The interesting thing about having an ASL component is that you can't go back and reshoot the ASL - the signer will look different; the lighting will be different, and so forth. So whatever footage I had, I had to make sure that the English text matched it.

There's one part in the book where the ASL version and the English version of a specific sentence are on separate pages. It was a goof made while shooting the video, and I tried to change the English text to match, but it didn't quite work. But that's okay. What is significant in one language may not be as significant in another language. English and ASL are different languages with very different storytelling and cultural properties.

But one big lesson I learned - I edited it all in iMovie '09 (or is it '10? whatever the latest version is) and exported it to HD format using Media Browser in the Share menu. Much to my surprise, that format is not compatible with iBooks Author.

I had to compress and convert it to "Apple TV" format with a data stream of 2 MBps in 720p - which was perfect. I used MPEG Streamclip. This discussion thread helped a lot. So - that was a big surprise for me - that iMovie couldn't easily export to a format compatible with iBooks Author. No biggie, though.

TUAW: Do you worry about the product size? It's over 100MB, about 116MB if I remember correctly, but I think you nicely avoided the problem of a product that was too ginormous.

Stone: I knew video would make the iBook big. I experimented with different data stream rates, basically 1 MBps, 1.5, 2, and 3. I found that 2 was perfect. I also wasn't sure just how big the image files could be; each page has about a 1.5-2 MB PNG file for the illustration.

TUAW: Did you ever consider doing this project as an application instead?

Stone: I have zero app programming skills. To do so would incur lots of overhead costs and stuff like that. I didn't have time for that. I knew all I wanted to do was make a book and iBooks Author fit the bill. I know of other teams working on ASL/English storybook apps, though.

Of course I would love to make the book as interactive as I can: let kids play with Pointy Three, move it around the screen and fun stuff like that. But iBooks Author is strictly for making books with interactivity that is very boxed-in in the form of widgets.

I see that at the end of conventional iBooks from major publishers: the very last page has a nice widget where you can immediately give a star rating and write a review. I tried to research on how to do the same thing for my book but couldn't find the solution. So my implementation is very clunky: a hyperlink to the book's iTunes Store page.

TUAW: Are there any other features you'd put into future books?

Stone: Since publishing, I've got some feedback that sound/reading aloud feels missing from the book. People have gotten accustomed to children's books on the iPad speaking aloud. My book is silent - like a normal book, and like any other book I read on the iPad - I'm deaf so reading is always a silent experience.

So I didn't really think about that until some people told me they wanted the book to talk aloud to them, too. I'm still researching on how that works. It's not a native feature of iBooks Author, but I heard people have found ways to add read aloud to iBooks. But it sounds difficult. And you know what...it' s interesting because Apple has built in voice over. Why can't Apple allow iBooks readers to access that directly? Seems simple.

TUAW: Any more thoughts you want to add about this project?

I loved doing it. I want to do more. Surely this isn't Pointy Three's last adventure! Most of all, I hope others do it as well. I told some people, "If you can put together a Powerpoint, you can do this." That's how easy it was.

If people are interested in adding ASL support to their books and want to hire me, you can reach me at my blog or Facebook page. I also hang out on Twitter.

TUAW: Thank you for taking the time to chat!

Official: 2013 Jaguar XJ replaces 5.0L V8 with supercharged V6

Jaguar has announced a few updates for the 2013 XJ, the most significant of which is the availability of an all-new supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine. The six-cylinder is good for 335 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque and is bolted to a new eight-speed automatic gearbox with a start-stop function. All told, the changes should help the big four-door yield a 14 percent improvement in fuel economy over the old naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 and its six-speed transmission.

While no Environmental Protection Agency numbers have been released as of yet, our quick math indicates the 2013 XJ could crank out 18 miles per gallon city, 26 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined. That fuel economy does come with a price, however. The delicious 5.0-liter V8 currently serves up 50 more horsepower and 49 more lb-ft of torque compared to the new force-fed six.

In addition to the drivetrain changes, Jaguar reworked the spring and damper rates for better on-road comfort, and a new 825 Meridian sound system is also part of the mix. Check out the full press blast below.

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Encrypted Text for assassination, combat and subtlety rogues. Chase Christian will be your guide to the world of shadows every Wednesday. Feel free to email me with any questions or article suggestions you'd like to see covered here.

Rogues currently occupy an exclusive spot in the raiding world. We're the scrappy melee fighter, bumping shoulders with the plethora of plate classes standing behind the boss. Their metal armor clanks and clatters as they swing their hefty two-handers, while our leather flexes with our swift blows. While other melee classes focus on big crits and heavy hits, rogues are all about wearing their target down with a barrage of different attacks.

In Mists of Pandaria, our niche is going to get crowded. With the formalization of cat druids as a distinct spec and the introduction of windwalker monks, rogues will have some competition. All three of us wear agility-based leather, all three of us focus on melee damage, and many of our abilities and mechanics are shared amongst the group. How can rogues differentiate themselves from the growing pack of players out for our gear and raid spots?

The NBA draft can be full of surprises and some of those biggest surprises involve players free falling through the first round and into the second round.

This year’s draft saw talent like Perry Jones III and Arnett Moultrie take some falls, but both players ended up being taken in the late first round. However, there were still several players who had hopes of being selected in the first 30 picks but found themselves anxiously waiting for Adam Silver to call their name in the second round instead.

Let’s take a look at five players in particular who slipped through the cracks and into the second part of the draft.

Apple reportedly planning major iTunes overhaul, better iCloud integration and sharing

Apple reportedly planning major iTunes overhaul, better iCloud integration and sharingWhile Google is beefing up its ecosystem, Apple is also planning some big changes to its iTunes platform according to Bloomberg. Sources inside the company claim, by the end of the year iTunes will undergo a major transformation seemingly designed to counter recent moves by Google. Key to the plans is iCloud. Cupertino's cloud storage solution will be much more tightly integrated, allowing easier access to and management of media collections across devices. Another part of the online offerings will be content discovery. As Netflix has already discovered, and Google is trying to master, making accurate suggestions for new music and films is key to keeping customers coming back to a media market. Deeper social network integration is also part of finding and sharing new music. Apple is supposedly in negotiations with the record labels to allow users to send songs to friends for free -- a feature both Spotify and Google Music already support. For a few more details check out the source.

Apple reportedly planning major iTunes overhaul, better iCloud integration and sharing originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 28 Jun 2012 12:54:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Euro 2012 Final: 10 Reasons Spain vs. Italy Could Be a Classic

The last time Spain played Italy in the European Championships, it was what everyone dreads on Sunday—a sour goalless draw. Spain prevailed after extra time, 4-2, on penalties.

So why should it be any different this time around?

First, there are likely to be only four Italian and six Spanish survivors at most from that previous match.

Second, this is the Final.

Surely, Spain could not produce another boring match like the one against France? They have come in for growing criticism from those who may have noticed ""the Emperor's new clothes." Is it possible that our fascination with Spain's eight midfielders and tiki taka football is coming to an end?

What people want above all from tournament matches is an end product. Let's hope we get it big time on Sunday.

A prospective analysis of lymphocyte phenotype and function over the course of acute sepsis

IntroductionSevere sepsis is characterized by an initial hyper-inflammatory response that may progress to an immune-suppressed state associated with increased susceptibility to nosocomial infection. Analysis of samples obtained from patients that died of sepsis has identified expression of specific inhibitory receptors expressed on lymphocytes that are associated with cell exhaustion. The objective of this study was to prospectively determine the pattern of expression of these receptors and immune cell function in patients with acute sepsis.
Methods:
24 patients with severe sepsis were enrolled within 24 hours of the onset of sepsis, as well as 12 age-matched healthy controls. Peripheral blood was obtained at enrollment and again 7 days later. Immune cell subsets and receptor expression were extensively characterized by quantitative flow cytometry. Lymphocyte function was assayed by stimulated cytokine secretion and proliferation assays. Results were also correlated to clinical outcome.
Results:
At the onset of severe sepsis, patients had decreased circulating innate and adaptive immune cells and elevated lymphocyte expression of receptors associated with cell activation as compared to controls. Samples analyzed 7 days later demonstrated increased expression of the inhibitory receptors CTLA4, TIM-3 and LAG-3 on T lymphocytes accompanied by decreased expression of the interleukin-7 receptor. Functional assays revealed impaired secretion of interferon (IFN)gamma following stimulation in vitro, which was reversible by incubation overnight in fresh media. Impaired secretion of IFNgamma correlated with death or development of secondary infection.
Conclusions:
Lymphocytes from patients with acute sepsis upregulate expression of receptors associated with cell exhaustion, which may contribute to the immune suppressed state that occurs in protracted disease. Therapy that reverses T cell exhaustion may restore immune function in immunocompromised patients and improve survival in sepsis.

Report: Fisker loan spurs more questions from senators

2014 Fisker Atlantic prototype - red - front three-quarter view

Um, about that $337 million.

Fisker Automotive and its pending federal government loan has spurred a letter from two U.S. senators to Energy Secretary Steven Chu questioning the appropriateness of the loan, The Detroit News reports.

In their letter to Chu, senators John Thune (R-South Dakota) and Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) reportedly question the $529 million loan in part because of Qatar's ownership stake in the plug-in hybrid automaker. The senators also inquired about the loan earmarked for Fisker partner A123 Systems, the company whose batteries have been subject to a recall.

Fisker spokesman Roger Ormisher tells The Detroit News that the company is staying out of politics and focusing on creating U.S. jobs. California-based Fisker was granted the loan in 2010 but has drawn down just $193 million to date.

Energy Department spokesman Damien LaVera argues the loan was an appropriate part of the federal government's effort to help boost fleetwide fuel economy and said Fisker's delays are "common for start-ups," according to the report.

Last week, Fisker debuted its first national advertising campaign in a multi-page Wall Street Journal ad that included a statement from company founder Henrik Fisker proclaiming that the automaker has "set out to redefine and reshape how the world thinks about cars." Fisker also recently widened its European distribution network.

Upon securing the original loan grant, Fisker was slated to hire 2,000 people at a Delaware factory that was formerly run by General Motors. Production of the Fisker Atlantic shown above, which was originally scheduled to be produced at the Delaware plant, has been delayed until at least 2014.

Sitagliptin Improves Reactive Hypoglycemia Symptoms

The diabetes drug sitagliptin appears to reduce the severity of reactive hypoglycemia, a form of low blood sugar that occurs after a meal, a preliminary study finds. The results were presented at The Endocrine Society's 94th Annual Meeting in Houston. "Further studies may determine if it is possible to use sitagliptin as a novel approach to treat this condition, for which there currently is no medical therapy," said the lead investigator, Francisco Gomez-Perez, MD, of Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Medicas y Nutricion SZ in Mexico City...

Effects of georeferencing effort on mapping monkeypox case distributions and transmission risk

Background:
Maps of disease occurrences and GIS-based models of disease transmission risk are increasingly common, and both rely on georeferenced diseases data. Automated methods for georeferencing disease data have been widely studied for developed countries with rich sources of geographic referenced data. However, the transferability of these methods to countries without comparable geographic reference data, particularly when working with historical disease data, has not been as widely studied. Historically, precise geographic information about where individual cases occur has been collected and stored verbally, identifying specific locations using place names. Georeferencing historic data is challenging however, because it is difficult to find appropriate geographic reference data to match the place names to. Here, we assess the degree of care and research invested in converting textual descriptions of disease occurrence locations to numerical grid coordinates (latitude and longitude). Specifically, we develop three datasets from the same, original monkeypox disease occurrence data, with varying levels of care and effort: the first based on an automated web-service, the second improving on the first by reference to additional maps and digital gazetteers, and the third improving still more based on extensive consultation of legacy surveillance records that provided considerable additional information about each case. To illustrate the implications of these seemingly subtle improvements in data quality, we develop ecological niche models and predictive maps of monkeypox transmission risk based on each of the three occurrence data sets.
Results:
We found macrogeographic variations in ecological niche models depending on the type of georeferencing method used. Less-careful georeferencing identified much smaller areas as having potential for monkeypox transmission in the Sahel region, as well as around the rim of the Congo Basin. These results have implications for mapping efforts, as each higher level of georeferencing precision required considerably greater time investment.
Conclusions:
The importance of careful georeferencing cannot be overlooked, despite it being a time- and labor-intensive process. Investment in archival storage of primary disease-occurrence data is merited, and improved digital gazetteers are needed to support public health mapping activities, particularly in developing countries, where maps and geographic information may be sparse.

Ben Gordon to Bobcats: Detroit Pistons' Move to Dump Salary Is Shortsighted

On paper the Detroit Pistons sent Ben Gordon to the Charlotte Bobcats (via ESPN)for swingman Corey Maggette. In reality, they sold a first-round draft pick for $12.5 million.

Just which year the pick will be surrendered is not yet determined, as the pick is protected based on the Pistons' draft status.

If the Pistons fail to make the playoffs in 2013, the pick is pushed to 2014. It is protected from the first eight selections in 2014 and the top pick in the 2015 NBA draft.

There are no protections in 2016.

Maggette will make $10.9 million in the upcoming season, before entering free agency in 2013. Gordon’s contract has two years and $25.6 million left.

Considering the Pistons will still need to spend a minimum of $3 million on a roster player for the 2013-14 season, their real net savings will be in the $12 to $13 million range.

The move will clear some salary cap room, but the Pistons aren’t lacking in that area. They have under $40 million committed for the 2013 season.

Detroit could have maintained Gordon’s salary cap hit, added a quality player next season and held on to their draft pick.

The Pistons aren’t overly vocal on why they made the move, which is understandable. This trade was about saving money, and they do so at the expense of future competitiveness.

To be fair to the Piston front office, it is understandable they would want to move Gordon. He has not played up to expectations since signing his five-year, $50-plus million contract in 2009.

The play of Rodney Stuckey made Gordon expendable, and Maggette will be a better fit for the team next season.

However, the Pistons were 25-41 last season, and don’t figure to be playoff contenders next year. Should fans be excited about missing the playoffs by five games instead of 12?

Surrendering a first-round pick will hamper their level of competitiveness in the future, and could cost them money in the long run.

Fans should be upset that finances are more important than future success. Combined with placing an inferior product on the field, attendance and revenue will drop.

The Bobcats are thrilled with their acquisition. Not only do they fill their most glaring need for a backcourt shooter, but they also acquire a first-round pick for a player that hasn’t made an impact on their team.

Maggette was injured and missed much of last season for the 7-59 Bobcats:

With this trade, we have acquired two things we covet in our plan to build this team. By acquiring a young and proven talent in Ben Gordon and a future first-round draft pick, we have both addressed our need for three-point shooting and acquired an additional asset to help continue to improve our team in the future.

Rod Higgins, Bobcats president of basketball operations

The Pistons have filled their need for saving a few dollars in salary. In doing so they will also likely push the surrendered pick off for a few more years.

The odds of them making the playoffs over the next two seasons are low.

Mists of Pandaria Beta: The Veiled Stair

Mists of Pandaria Beta The Veiled Stair
In Mists of Pandaria, once you hit level 87, you can head north from the Valley of the Four Winds into Kun Lai Summit. But before you get to Kun Lai, you must travel through the Veiled Stair, a small sub-zone nestled in the mountains high above the Valley of the Four Winds. The grummle pictured above will give you a quest to head up the stairs and see what there is to see -- and surprisingly, there's actually quite a bit hidden away here.

The Veiled Stair is also where Wrathion is making his temporary home in the Tavern of the Mists. Nearby, the Black Market Auction House waits for travelers with particularly heavy pocketbooks and a need to dump some gold on unique and hard-to-find items. The path to Kun Lai Summit is littered with wildlife and teeming with saurok who aren't particularly happy about the increased foot traffic in the area.

And tucked away in the caverns and mountain peaks are a few hidden areas with no real purpose at this time. These hidden gems are pretty fascinating, provided you can get by the saurok brutes that patrol the paths and block the way. Alternatively, you can simply take a look at the gallery below, which offers a sneak peek to this sub-zone and the hidden mysteries it has to offer.

It's open warfare between Alliance and Horde in Mists of Pandaria, World of Warcraft's next expansion. Jump into five new levels with new talents and class mechanics, try the new monk class, and create a pandaren character to ally with either Horde or Alliance.
