Forbidden fruit always seems to taste a little sweeter, and what you see above is the fairly impressive interior of the new, Chinese-market version of the Chevrolet Cruze. As befitting a car with sleek, upgraded exterior styling, the interior is also reworked to be a better place to spend time. Drivers might be stuck in China's infamous traffic, but at least it looks comfortable inside.
Young, Chinese buyers are looking for more upscale cars with better attention to detail, according to Shanghai General Motors' research, and the automaker is tailoring the updated Cruze specifically to these influential consumers. The reengineered model moves the cowl forward and extends the curve of the roof to make the interior more spacious and give it class-leading rear knee room. The dashboard is made from two, arching sections reminiscent of the C7 Corvette with the infotainment system connecting them in the middle. The company is also trying to improve material quality with the seats, door panels and dashboard covered in Saddle Brown leather with a combination of chrome and piano black plastic as trim, and the look is amplified a touch more with blue ambient lighting. For infotainment, there is Chevy's MyLink II system that boasts an 8-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth and voice controls.
The Chinese Cruze was first unveiled at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show in April, but at the time Shanghai GM only showed off its Tru 140S Concept-inspired exterior. The latest model rides on a brand new platform that we are told is eventually coming to the US with different styling and possibly a longer wheelbase.
For a long time, the stereotype about Chinese cars was that they were cheaply built, basic transportation, but that was clearly in the past. This new Cruze looks every bit as good as Western counterparts. Scroll down to read the full release.
