David Freese Injury: Updates on Cardinals 3B's Ankle, Likely Return Date

St. Louis Cardinals third baseman David Freese suffered an injury during Game 3 of the NLCS on Monday night, and he was replaced by Daniel Descalso

The MLB Network's Alanna Rizzo has the news:

Scott Miller of CBS Sports provides the specifics:

Freese, who entered Monday's contest hitting .231/.333/.564 with one home run during the postseason, fouled a ball of his foot in the top of the fifth and appeared to injure himself then.

He stayed in the game and proceeded to knock a single into right field, but after he advanced to second on a Matt Adams single, he was taken out of the game.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, who were trailing 2-0 at the time, the loss was compounded by an anemic base-running mistake from Descalso

With zero outs, Jon Jay flied out to left field, and Descalso was inconceivably caught too far off second and doubled up by Carl Crawford, effectively ending the rally crucial rally.

Freese has suffered through his worst season since his debut in 2009. He had a career-low slash line of .262/.340/.381 to go along with just nine home runs and 60 RBI in 138 games.

Still, he's an key part of this team, and getting him back will be important for the Cardinals, who entered Game 3 with a 2-0 series lead over the Dodgers

Game 4 is Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET.
