There is no future for Greg McElroy or any of the New York Jets' quarterbacks.
For starters, according to Chris Mortensen of ESPN.com:
League sources say it is a virtual certainty Tim Tebow will land a job back home with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2013.
Tebow reportedly will be traded or released after the season, but league sources say the Jets are likely to honor Tebow's forthcoming request to be released and therefore become an unrestricted free agent.
Secondly, McElroy failed to produce in his first start despite Week 16 being a meaningless game.
Against a San Diego Chargers defense that entered as the No. 19 pass defense and had allowed 26 passing touchdowns, McElroy went a dismal 14-of-24 for only 185 yards and an interception.
Not to mention, the former Alabama signal-caller was punished by the Bolts: 11 sacks, 16 hits and one fumble. At least Tim Tebow could utilize some mobility and make plays outside the pocket.
Sanchez, on the other hand, does possess a quicker release and is the best New York can put under center. Unfortunately, that's how dire Gang Green's quarterback situation became throughout the duration of 2012.
None bring consistently reliable decision-making skills to the table; otherwise, fewer turnovers would occur. And no quarterback gets hit/sacked as many times as McElroy did without failing miserably at pre-snap reads.
Without question, the offensive line is partly at fault, but the quarterback must recognize and acknowledge blitzes and disguised coverages. In turn, that leads to audibles and greater offensive efficiency.
Interestingly enough, according to Mike Vorkunov of the Star-Ledger:
While McElroy played and Sanchez charted plays on a clipboard, Tebow watched idly from the sideline. The Jets had activated all three quarterbacks – the first time they had done so all season – but Tebow was never used.
Instead he had to watch as the Jets continued to run the Wildcat, with Jeremy Kerley and Greene.
Yes, this can be viewed as a game that earned McElroy some game experience.
But is he or Sanchez the future of the Jets?
No, because New York needs to revamp the position and spruce up the offensive line. Given the immediate production and impact of 2012's rookie quarterbacks, as well as second-year guys such as Colin Kaepernick and Andy Dalton, McElroy is light years behind.
In short, for the sake of Jets fans, this team must rebuild this offseason.
