Los Angeles Lakers front office brass stated last week that everyone not named Kobe Bryant would be available in order to acquire both Chris Paul and Dwight Howard at the end of the day.
Now thanks to the Houston Rockets jumping in as the third team to help get a Lakers deal done for Paul, the Lakers still would have a chance to strike gold and also make a run at acquiring Dwight Howard.
If a deal for Paul ends up getting done, it leaves the Lakers in a great position.
They would have acquired the point guard with really only giving up Pau Gasol, leaving Andrew Bynum as the main chip to take a run at acquiring Howard.
Orlando isn't in a hurry to deal Howard at the moment, and at the end of the day, they may still be able to talk Howard into staying in Orlando if the Magic improve enough.
But if they end up trading him, the Lakers will have a ton of competition for Howard, including the defending NBA Champions Dallas Mavericks. By not signing Tyson Chandler and others, the Mavs have positioned themselves nicely to take a run at not only Howard, but New Jersey point guard Deron Williams as well.
But the Lakers will have plenty of bullets left in their gun when the time is right to take a run at Howard. The not only have Bynum, but they wouldn't have had to part with Lamar Odom in a deal for Paul either. Add to that, they could take on one of Orlando's bad contracts, plus throw in the draft picks the Magic would need.
That proposal could wind up being very attractive to the Magic in the long run.
It may take some time, but at the end of the day, the Lakers could wind up being the biggest winners of them all.
