28 Days to 'Mania: R-Truth and Kofi Kingston Could Start a Tag Team Revolution

With all the great matches and possible surprises that have already been planned for WrestleMania 28, I am still waiting for the the tag team match that will kick start the beginning of a revolution in the WWE.

While there is a battle over who will be general manager between Teddy Long, a United States Champion who uses a green sock to win his matches and an over-sized man named Clay who looks like a Run DMC reject, the tag team division may be a bright spot that could lead to more competition after April 1.

And it all could start with Kofi Kingston and R-Truth.

Right now, there are a few tag teams that are active and work well within the WWE. Epico and Primo obviously have an edge on everyone else because they are the current tag team champions (there is a tag team championship?), but other teams like Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger could help usher in a new generation of wrestling.

I have always been a huge fan of tag teams for the skill and science, the drama, the build of the crowds and the predictability or unpredictability they bring to the squared-circle. And when teams like the "Killer Bs," The Hart Foundation, Demolition and the Samoans ruled the WWE, that was the golden age of tag team wrestling.

Today, we have none of that and nothing that remotely resembles any kind of continuity. Please, I would even settle for the Mulkey Brothers vs. Shaun and Scott Simpson.

In all fairness, I realize singles stars like John Cena, CM Punk and Daniel Bryan are more popular for competing against each other one-on-one. And if they joined forces with someone to concentrate on tag team wrestling, maybe some of their luster would wear off and the WWE would lose some of its marketing ploy with the fans.

But if there were a "true" tag team division, then teams like R-Truth and Kingston, Epico and Primo and Ziggler and Swagger would still remain popular. And with any luck some singles competitors like The Miz, Zack Ryder, Drew McIntyre and others could find themselves higher on the WWE ladder than they are now.

And please bring back Justin Gabriel and Heath Slater. Maybe put Big Show and Mark Henry together instead of against each other and find a way to make Shawn Michaels and HHH kiss and make up so DX makes another appearance.

While it is not "chic" for tag teams to rule the roost in wrestling, it could very well be something to springboard this company into something better. And while the WWE fights, injuries and fractured story lines, it can reap praise for letting the past help define the future.
