NFL Breaking News: St. Louis Rams Agree to Terms with Safety Quintin Mikell

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Rams have agreed to terms with safety Quintin Mikell, formerly of the Philadelphia Eagles. Mikell has been widely reported to be on the Rams radar for some time now, and this move is a major step to solidifying the defensive secondary of Steve Spagnuolo's ever-improving defense.

Mikell played strong safety for the Eagles, and he will turn 31 early in the season. Last year Mikell recorded 88 tackles, three interceptions, a forced fumble and a sack.

Mikell is good versus both the run and pass, and he is adept in coverage but able to come up and play the run effectively as well.

Although he is only 5'10", Mikell possesses good range and instincts in the secondary typically getting a good jump on passes.

Mikell will start at safety playing alongside Craig Dahl or James Butler. With his signing, James Butler could theoretically be on the way out.

By addressing the safety position, the Rams will likely turn their attention to other areas of need, such as outside linebacker. Saintsnation.com has reported that Scott Shanle, a New Orleans Saints outside linebacker, will make a free agent visit to St. Louis.

Chris Mortenson of ESPN has also reported that the Rams are interested in running backs Reggie Bush and Darren Sproles, among others.

The action this week around the NFL and in St. Louis will be fast, furious and, most of all, vital, in regard to the direction of the 2011 season.
