Czech Republic vs. Germany: Team News, Predicted Lineups, Live Stream & TV Info

The European Under-21 Championship has reached its final round of group games, and we begin with Group A on Tuesday. Czech Republic, the hosts, will be looking to build upon a stunning victory over Serbia in their second game, but they now come up against the strongest team in the tournament on paper, Germany.

A win guarantees passage to the semi-finals for both sides, but a draw would put the Czechs in danger of elimination.

The Details

Group A

Venue: Stadion Eden, Prague

Date: June 23, 2015

Time: 7:45 p.m. BST

TV and Live Stream: BT Sport 1 & HD (UK) / UEFA.tv live stream

Czech Republic Preview

Not even the most optimistic Czech supporter could claim to foresee what Jakub Dovalil's men served up against Serbia, a 4-0 thrashing that could easily have turned into one of the most embarrassing scorelines in the competition's history.

They went on the attack after losing the first game against Denmark, swapping out the more cautious 4-1-4-1 and bringing in support striker Vaclav Kadlec. Playing just off Jan Kliment, he was in a destructive mood until he was substituted after 30 minutes with a twisted ankle.

He's been ruled out for three to four weeks and will play no further part in the tournament, but the good news is Michal Travnik, his replacement on the day, excelled in his place and is an easy choice for the XI. Jiri Skalak, too, was superb in place of Ladislav Krejci.

If the Lionets can replicate the intensity and vigour of their Serbia showing, anything is possible here.

Germany Preview

The Czechs may have set the stage early on Saturday with a crushing victory, but Germany matched that performance with a stunning one of their own. A 3-0 defeat of Denmark left us unquestioning in the assertion that Die Deutschen, for all intents and purposes, are fully up and running in this tournament.

Horst Hrubesch fixed the selection mistakes he made in their opener, benching Philipp Hofmann, playing Kevin Volland as the No. 9 and starting Leonardo Bittencourt and Joshua Kimmich. It gave the side purpose, mobility, movement and balance.

Given the nature of the performance, Hrubesch is extremely unlikely to make any changes. Even Dominique Heintz, who came in for Robin Knoche in defence, improved as the match progressed to shake off an unconvincing start.

An identical XI, still in the 4-2-3-1 formation, is expected.

Where the Game Will Be Won

After taking 20 minutes to find their feet against the Danes, the Germans clicked through the gears in a flash and found the ideal place to target with their passing: the channels between the full-backs and centre-backs.

Volland, splitting wide, and the wing duo of Amin Younes and Bittencourt consistently slipped behind the defensive line in the wide areas, and we lost count of the number of byline cutbacks and crosses Die Deutschen dug out.

It's reasonable to expect them to try the same method again, as it suits their playing strengths down to the ground. We're yet to see Max Meyer really contribute, suggesting there's even more to come.

Interestingly, this is the same method the Czechs used to put Serbia under intense pressure, encouraging left-back Matej Hybs and Skalak to hit the byline, widen the angles and cross the ball. Pavel Kaderabek, on the opposite side, remains a constant threat motoring forward too.

We're set to see two teams in similar formations trying to attack in the same fashion, but who will do it better? That will decide the game.

Prediction

It's difficult to split the two teams, given their mammoth performances on Matchday 2, so we give Germany the edge because of their raw quality and obvious playing-personnel advantage.

The hosts will have more than 15,000 people cheering them on in the stadium, which should level the field a little, but Die Deutschen take the victory and likely top spot in Group A with it.

Czech Republic 1-2 Germany

Fact or Fiction for Latest NFL Offseason Rumors

As the NFL offseason nears a dead period for a few weeks, teams are dealing with contract situations before it’s time to play. Extending a player early can save millions of dollars down the line. Players with the franchise tag often were the long-term security that a new deal promises.

The ongoing discussions between teams and agents always seem to leak to the public. These juicy rumors have been collected in one place for you to read. But should we buy or sell the latest NFL offseason rumors?

We have the answers for each specific situation. For teams looking to win now, paying top-tier talent is almost a must. Unhappiness in the locker room in the midst of a Super Bowl run can derail even the best teams.

On the other hand, more fiscally limited teams may have to put their foot down and allow the season to play out. This won’t always jive with a player, who must receive their fair share of compensation for their effort and production as well.

Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Fathers Discuss Warriors Winning Championship

Dell Curry and Mychal Thompson each had a chance to play in the NBA, but right now, the former players are busy being proud fathers as they watch their sons—aka the Splash Brothers—take the league by storm.

For a special Father's Day edition of Sunday Conversation, Dell and Mychal joined Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson for an interview with ESPN's Marc Stein to discuss basketball. The fathers talked about their respective sons' accomplishments and even compared their games to those of their sons.

The segment was family-oriented, so naturally, Riley Curry made a point to join the interview as well.

Efficient generation of influenza virus with a mouse RNA polymerase I-driven all-in-one plasmid

Background:
The current influenza vaccines are effective against seasonal influenza, but cannot be manufactured in a timely manner for a sudden pandemic or to be cost-effective to immunize huge flocks of birds. We propose a novel influenza vaccine composing a bacterial carrier and a plasmid cargo. In the immunized subjects, the bacterial carrier invades and releases its cargo into host cells where the plasmid expresses viral RNAs and proteins for reconstitution of attenuated influenza virus. Here we aimed to construct a mouse PolI-driven plasmid for efficient production of influenza virus.
Results:
A plasmid was constructed to express all influenza viral RNAs and proteins. This all-in-one plasmid resulted in 10
5
?10
6
50% tissue culture infective dose (TCID
50
)/mL of influenza A virus in baby hamster kidney (BHK-21) cells on the third day post-transfection, and also reconstituted influenza virus in Madin?Darby canine kidney (MDCK) and Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. A 6-unit plasmid was constructed by deleting the HA and NA cassettes from the all-in-one plasmid. Cotransfection of BHK-21 cells with the 6-unit plasmid and the two other plasmids encoding the HA or NA genes resulted in influenza virus titers similar to those produced by the 1-plasmid method.
Conclusions:
An all-in-one plasmid and a 3-plasmid murine PolI-driven reverse genetics systems were developed, and efficiently reconstituted influenza virus in BHK-21 cells. The all-in-one plasmid may serve as a tool to determine the factors inhibiting virus generation from a large size plasmid. In addition, we recommend a simple and robust ?1?+?2? approach to generate influenza vaccine seed virus.

Women's World Cup 2015 Bracket: Round-of-16 Results After Saturday Fixtures

By the time Saturday's action concludes at the 2015 Women's World Cup, two countries will have earned their place in the quarterfinals.

The round of 16 began Saturday, with Germany and Sweden squaring off and China vs. Cameroon to follow.

The matchup between the Germans and Swedes was by far the most anticipated fixture of the day. Germany are first in the FIFA rankings, with Sweden just behind in fifth. Either team is capable of winning the tournament, so a round-of-16 exit would be a massive disappointment for the loser.

For China and Cameroon, simply reaching the round of 16 was a major accomplishment. The Chinese were a powerhouse during the 1990s and early 2000s, but they didn't even qualify for the 2011 Women's World Cup and have generally fallen on hard times. Meanwhile, this is the Cameroonians' first Women's World Cup appearance.

Here's a look at Saturday's results, followed by brief recaps from each match.

Saturday Results

Saturday Recap

Germany Pull Away from Sweden in Second Half

Germany had a few nervy moments Saturday against Sweden but eventually sealed passage to the quarterfinals with a 4-1 victory.

Anja Mittag put the Germans ahead 1-0 in the 24th minute. The Swedish defense gave Mittag way too much time and space outside the 18-yard box, and she curled a low shot into the bottom right corner.

ESPN's Julie Foudy was critical of Swedish defender Nilla Fischer on the goal:

Mittag has been one of Germany's best attackers all tournament. According to ESPN Stats & Info's Paul Carr, she became the third German to score five goals at one Women's World Cup.

Mittag found herself front and center again in the 35th minute as Amanda Ilestedt brought her down in the box. The official awarded a penalty, one the German forward didn't seem to ask for, per Linda Eriksson of Women's Soccer Zone:

The 30-year-old confirmed after the match that the penalty decision was somewhat fortuitous for her team (via Eriksson):

Celia Sasic stepped up to the spot and slotted home the penalty kick, giving Germany a 2-0 lead.

The game remained 2-0 for much of the second half.

In the 78th minute, Sasic found herself in the right place at the right time. Simone Laudehr's shot deflected off Fischer, caromed off the post and bounced right into the path of Sasic, who calmly headed in the ball from close range.

Dan Lauletta of Equalizer Soccer thought the individual battle between Sasic and Mittag, who both lead the tournament with five goals, provided the most fun in a one-sided match:

Linda Sembrant made things interesting with a goal for Sweden in the 82nd minute, but Dzsenifer Marozsan removed any doubt with an 88th-minute goal to put Germany 4-1 to the good.

Crashing out in the round of 16 isn't what Pia Sundhage had in mind for her native Sweden when she took over as coach. According to Sports Illustrated's Grant Wahl, she may already be on the move to another job:

For Germany, Saturday's win was simply affirmation for how good the squad is.

They could have a stern test in the quarterfinals, though. The Germans will get either France or South Korea. Should the French advance, they'll present a major hurdle for Germany on the road to the semifinals.

China Edge out Cameroon in 1-0 Win

A 12th-minute goal from Wang Shanshan was all China needed to get past Cameroon Saturday.

The goal came on a corner for the Chinese. Wang Lisi delivered in the ball, which fell to Li Dongna. Li had ample space to find Wang Shanshan, who quickly fired home a volley into the bottom right corner. Cameroon's marking for the corner was rather poor, with Li completely left all alone when she collected the ball.

Cameroon looked like they'd be able to find an equalizer. China was having a hard time dealing with the pace in the Cameroonian attack. NBC Sports' Jeff Kassouf thought the Chinese were also vulnerable to the counter:

Gaelle Enganamouit has become a bit of a cult hero for her performance in Canada, and the 23-year-old was one of Cameroon's best players going forward. Bleacher Report's Andrew Gibney didn't see any hesitation from Enganamouit when she had the ball at her feet close to goal:

In the end, she and her team couldn't unlock a Chinese defense that has been excellent for much of the tournament. Just ask Canada and the Netherlands how difficult China can be to break down.

The winners will play the United States or Colombia in the quarterfinals. China will almost certainly hope Colombia prevails since the Americans are one of the strongest teams in the World cup.

Cameroon's World Cup ended Saturday, but the team had a promising maiden voyage in the tournament. The talent is there for Cameroon, and the experience their players gained from this year's event will prove invaluable when the country begins qualifying for 2019.

Phil Mickelson at US Open 2015: Saturday Leaderboard Score and Twitter Reaction

Phil Mickelson needed a spectacular round to get back into the 2015 U.S. Open on Saturday. Lefty was unable to muster the magic at Chambers Bay, carding nine bogeys en route to a seven-over 77 to shoot himself out of a chance to complete the career Grand Slam.

Mickelson now stands at 10 over par for the championship that has eluded him to the tune of an unmatched six runner-up finishes. Perhaps the Hall of Famer would have taken that result again if he'd known he'd be this far out of contention entering the final round in University Place, Washington.

""As bad as my score was, I hit a lot of good shots that ended up as bogeys," Mickelson said, according to Golf Digest's Dave Shedloski.

Luke Kerr-Dineen of USA Today praised how Mickelson's move through the ball looked in the early going:

That's about the only solace Mickelson could take in what was an adventurous ball-striking showcase in the worst way.

PGA Tour rankings of 169th in greens in regulation and 182nd in proximity to the hole entering this event highlighted the problems Mickelson has had with his irons this season. Those issues surfaced yet again Saturday, as Mickelson managed to hit just six of 18 greens and only one on the front nine.

The first nine holes were when Mickelson really lost his way, dropping five shots without a birdie to go out in 40. Quite a departure from the beginning of the tournament. Mickelson birdied one third of his opening nine holes in the first round.

"Phil the Thrill" made the turn and lived up to his famous moniker not long thereafter, draining a long birdie putt at the par-four 11th to give the crowd something to cheer about.

Other than a birdie later at the shortened par-three 17th, there wasn't much for Mickelson to celebrate, and he made a disappointing six at the par-five closing hole.

Bob Harig of ESPN.com reacted to Mickelson's woeful outing:

Prior to the third round, Mickelson knew he had to try to make something happen, per the Seattle Times' Bob Condotta:

I'll have to come out tomorrow (Saturday) and get a good game plan and figure out how to shoot something in the mid-60s and get back in it. It's very difficult for anyone to run away with it.

But I'm going to have to hopefully get conditions in the morning that are a little bit easier and then progressively get more difficult for the leaders, because that’s really my only chance to catch up.

Although he did manage to find 10 of 14 fairways, Mickelson simply wasn't sharp enough to fire at flags and wound up somewhere around 10 strokes off his intended target score.

Golf Channel's Angela Hamann had a fitting reaction:

The following anecdote from ESPN.com's Jason Sobel foreshadowed what Saturday's action fostered:

Mickelson has become an afterthought just as the other immensely popular American golfer of his generation in Tiger Woods, though at least Lefty made the cut. This does look to be Jordan Spieth's rise to superstardom, and Mickelson, having just turned 45, has to figure out a way to become more consistent.

The next major stop is St Andrews for the Open Championship. Lefty won the Claret Jug in 2013 and has the type of length and imaginative game to thrive on the links.

Chambers Bay has claimed a lot of golfers this week. Being a controversial, brand-new U.S. Open venue, it's unwise to dismiss Mickelson even after his discouraging Saturday performance. He had to be aggressive to try and make a big move, but he simply wasn't clicking well enough in any area of his game.

Considering he just came off a tie for third in Memphis and finished second in his prior two major starts, Mickelson should do his best to block out this U.S. Open letdown, move forward and finish 2015 strong.

Magnetic stimulation for stress urinary incontinence: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

Background:
There is currently a lack of randomized, sham-controlled trials that are adequately powered, using validated outcomes, to allow for firm recommendations on the use of magnetic stimulation for stress urinary incontinence. We report a protocol of a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled parallel-group trial to evaluate the efficacy of magnetic stimulation for stress urinary incontinence.Methods/DesignOne hundred twenty subjects with stress urinary incontinence will be randomized in a 1:1 allocation to either active or sham magnetic stimulation using computer-generated, permuted blocks of variable sizes. Subjects will receive 2 sessions of magnetic stimulation per week for 8 weeks (16 sessions total). The primary outcome is the improvement in severity of involuntary urine loss based on the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire for Urinary Incontinence Short Form at the end of treatment sessions compared with baseline. Secondary outcomes include cure, stress urinary incontinence?related symptoms (incontinence episode frequency, urine loss in 1-hour pad test, pelvic floor muscle strength) and health-related quality of life (Patient Global Impression of Improvement, International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire?Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms Quality of Life and EQ-5D). The safety of magnetic stimulation will also be assessed. Besides evaluation of clinical treatment effectiveness, cost-effectiveness analysis using patient-reported outcomes will be performed.DiscussionThis trial is designed to provide pending outcome information on this non-invasive treatment option. We intend to acknowledge the existing flaws in previous clinical trials and determine conclusively whether magnetic stimulation is effective for stress urinary incontinence.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT01924728. These NBA Finals GIFs are Pretty Awesome

The 2015 NBA Finals are in the books, and while the series didn’t reach a do-or-die Game 7, I’m sure most basketball fans would agree that this year’s finals between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors was awfully exciting all on it’s own. (Television ratings seemed to prove this much.) But even with this […]

Grandma's Marathon 2015: Route, Course Map, Times, Event Details

It's that time again in Duluth, Minnesota. The 2015 Grandma's Marathon gets underway on Saturday, June 20, and the locals are excited about this beloved event. Since its inception in 1977, the race has grown by leaps and bounds. There were just 200 runners in the inaugural race; this year's version is expected to have 18,000.

Erik Nelson, who has assisted with the prep for the race since it began 39 years ago, told Stef Manisero of Fox 21 KQDS, "It's like a holiday for everyone.”

The race gets started at 8:45 a.m. ET (7:45 local).

Per Weather.com, it should be a wet affair. There's a 90 percent chance of rain, and thunderstorms are in the forecast. With a high of 73 degrees and a low of 53, the temperature is great for running, even if the rain puts a bit of a damper on the event.

The Course

The marathon is run on Old Highway 61, and it spans the North Shore of Lake Superior. The starting line is just outside of Two Harbors, Minnesota, with the finish line near Duluth’s Canal Park. This isn't exactly a race designed to challenge the more hardcore and ultra-competitive runners. In fact, per the event's official website, Grandma’s Marathon is said to be perfect for a novice marathoner.

The terrain is mostly free of hills, although there is a large incline near the 22nd mile of the race. In the event that you're a map person, here's a link to one of the best course maps I've ever seen. This one is interactive, and you learn a lot about the surrounding area as well as the course.

As much as the course and the exercise play a part in the value of the race, the area's beautiful scenery is also an attraction. Minnesota is beautiful country, and the backdrop of Grandma's Marathon treats runners and spectators to this aspect of the state.

Even though this isn't the Boston Marathon, runners still may need to know some of the best practices to get the most out of their experience.

WCCO CBS Local's Kylie Bearse spoke to former Olympian Carrie Tollefson, who gave some tips on running the race in the rain. Tollefson said:

What I do to calm my nerves is to visualize the race beforehand. We want to make sure we’re thinking through race day, have your uniform all planned out. You have to still stay hydrated. A lot of people think if it’s cool and rainy you don’t have to hydrate as much. Hydrate before and the few days leading up to it.

If you're in the area—and have a really good umbrella—Grandma's Marathon sounds like it will be a blast again this year. You should check it out.
