As the horses and riders prepare for the 2012 Kentucky Derby, it's not all about speed and stamina. Luck plays a role as well. Where your favorite horse is placed in the gates can make or break a winning run.
In the past 24 years only one horse, Real Quiet, has won the Kentucky Derby from an inside post draw. That was in 1998. Bob Baffert got lucky that year, but in an ideal world he'd rather have his horses, Bodemeister and Liaison, break from the middle or outside.
It is well-known that horses who draw an inside post more often than not are blocked out by the first turn. Geometrically speaking, the shortest distance around the track may not work in horse racing.
So, who will be where and how will post positions change the game? Here's the list from today's draw at Churchill Downs.
1. Daddy Long Legs
2. Optimizer
3. Take Charge Indy
4. Union Rags
5. Dullahan
6. Bodemeister
7. Rousing Sermon
