British Open Leaderboard 2013: Dissecting Day 2 Results

Through two days at the 2013 Open Championship, the scores have balanced out quite a bit. Muirfield Golf Course played much tougher on Friday than it did on Thursday.

Zach Johnson's five-under 66 was the best score of the first round, but no one came considerably close to Johnson's opening round score on Friday.

Here's a look at the real-time leaderboard and some of the top stories from the second day of play.

Miguel Angel Jimenez Holding Steady

After a three-under 68 on Thursday had Jimenez right behind Johnson after a round of play, the 49-year-old Spaniard shot an even-par 71 to remain three under par overall.

In what is shaping up to be a brutally tough tournament, that is good enough for the lead.

We may not be looking at a repeat of the U.S. Open where no golfers finished under par, but don't expect anyone to put together a stellar round.

Lee Westwood Torches Muirfield With Three-Under 68

With the course playing as tough as it did on Friday, a three-under 68 qualifies as torching it. Westwood and Charl Schwartzel had the best rounds of the day.

Westwood's respectable first-round 72 combined with the 68 on Friday has the 40-year-old Englishman at two under for the tournament and one shot behind Jimenez.

Tiger's Steadiness is Dangerous For Field

Tiger Woods was the favorite coming in, and up to now, he's done nothing to make those predictions seem unfounded. After a two-under 69 on the first day, Woods posted a solid even-par showing to finish up just one shot behind Jimenez as well.

On a course like Muirfield that is built to play to Woods' strengths, no leader wants Woods to be within a stroke of him going into the final day.

Unless he has a third round similar to the 10-over 81 he shot at Muirfield in 2002, Woods should be a major factor on Sunday. That's bad news for the rest of the field.

The Americans Come Back to Earth

Nine of the top 14 scores from the first round at the 2013 Open Championship came from Americans. The second round was a different story, though.

Five of the top 13 scores came from Americans, but four of the top 10 on the leaderboard hail from the States. When it is all said and done, Woods seems like a lock to remain in contention, but the others aren't nearly as sure bets.
