With the possible exception of Albert Pujols, Brewers' first baseman Prince Fielder will be the most pursued player on the free agent market.
Actually, he may even be more highly sought after. Pujols is the better all around hitter, but Fielder is younger.
But with Mark Teixeira and Adrian Gonzalez occupying first base, you would think that the Yankees and Red Sox will not be going after Fielder. That eliminates the typical two biggest bidders.
We're also going to eliminate the Brewers from this discussion. I think it would go without saying that they are an option for Fielder. I really doubt that anyone needs any more proof or convincing than Fielder's career in Milwaukee.
So, if he leaves the Brewers, which teams are the most likely ones to grab Fielder?
Chicago Cubs
This seems to be the hottest rumor out there. This summer, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times said that Fielder wouldn't be opposed to Chicago.
The Cubs could absolutely use some pop in the middle of the world, and Fielder would certainly provide that. Along with Darwin Barney and Starlin Castro, Fielder would give the Cubs quite the formidable offensive cornerstone.
Wrigley Field tends to favor right handed hitters, but Fielder has too much power for that to matter. Fielder would clearly know the road ballparks that he would be playing in the most.
Colorado Rockies
I am not sure that the Rockies could afford Fielder, but this is a match made in Heaven. Fielder's swing is custom built for Coors Field.
Right-center field has always been the livest part of Coors Field. Todd Helton is a Colorado legend, but he's getting old and having a hard time completing a season without getting hurt. It's time for the Rockies to look elsewhere for their every day first base needs.
Fielder is a pretty good transition.
Texas Rangers
Unlike the first two teams, the Rangers are a playoff team. Actually, the Rangers are a World Series team. But just because they are good doesn't mean that they can't get better.
Texas is a live yard to all fields. In that lineup, Fielder would get plenty of chances to drive in runs, and would get plenty of protection.
If ESPN's Wallace Mathews is right and the Rangers are targeting C.C. Sabathia, then they have the money to go after Fielder.
In the American League, the designated hitter also offers a good alternative for any misplaced players.
