Pitt Researchers Find Immune Cells May Play Previously Unrecognized Role In Inflammation In HIV/AIDS
Google: 'We won't be approving any facial recognition Glassware at this time'
While the public decides how to deal with Google Glass-wearing cyborgs walking among us, there are already startups trying to add facial recognition to the device. That includes the MedRef for Glass app for Doctors and an API created by Lambda Labs that's on the way. Unfortunately, apparently due to privacy concerns, a post tonight by the Project Glass team says that it will not approve any app using the tech for release -- at least until it has some privacy protections in place. That's the same standard it previously said would need to be met before it added facial recognition to its own services.
We've been listening closely to you, and many have expressed both interest and concern around the possibilities of facial recognition in Glass. As Google has said for several years, we won't add facial recognition features to our products without having strong privacy protections in place. With that in mind, we won't be approving any facial recognition Glassware at this time.
Without approval, we don't expect to see any standard apps with the API built-in, however with the headset's current wide open nature, we assume interested hackers will be able to get the software running if they so desire. So, how comfortable do you feel having a conversation with someone wearing Glass, considering third parties may add extra features even if Google itself is not involved? Check out the full statement from Google linked below, as well as a look at Lambda Labs from TechCrunch.

Video: 200-mph Camaro dyno run is a blow out
Filed under: Motorsports, Coupe, Performance, Videos, Chevrolet, Specialty
What's the best way to get the tires off the rims quickly? Not by running the thing at 200 miles per hour on the dyno and having them explode, we're quite sure. That's what happened to a twin-turbo F-body Chevrolet Camaro with 1,800 horsepower at the wheels as it was being prepped for the Texas Mile, when the drag radials decided they would rather die.
The dyno run actually took place two years ago, but according to YouTube poster "High Tech Corvette" it is only now being seen, and its explosive action has now gone viral. The car is owned by Kelly Bise and tuned by Late Model Racing, and when it ran in the 2012 Texas Mile, it was called the world's fastest Camaro in the standing mile. When it ran again this year, things didn't go so well Bise crashed during his run going more than 200 mph. He emerged without injury.
There are three videos below: the dyno video is first, followed by this year's crash, and then the 2012 run showing how things are meant to go.

Sony will use eyeIO's video compression tech to deliver 4K movies
At CES eyeIO claimed its software suite was "studio grade" 4K ready and it will be put to the test soon, since Sony Pictures is licensing it to deliver movies to the FMP-X1 4K media player this summer. Sony didn't have any more details to reveal about its 4K delivery plans just yet, but eyeIO's press release claims its tech is being used on 4K video (3,840 x 2,160) encodes with support for extended color gamut. Besides easier downloading / streaming on bandwidth-constrained connections, it also helps out on the server side by requiring less storage space and distributing files more efficiently. Netflix is another recent licensee of the tech, and while not all responses to some of its new streams have been positive, we'll wait and see what it can push to Sony's $699 box and the Sony 4K TVs it attaches to.

Ohio State Football: How David Perkins' Departure Affects the Buckeye Defense
After a few weeks of rumors, Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer confirmed on Thursday that sophomore LB David Perkins has left the team.
Though Perkins' short Buckeye career will be remembered mostly for his tackle of Brutus during spring football, it takes away depth at a position where there isn't a lot of proven depth to begin with.
Perkins was expected to compete for the third starting job along with fellow sophomores Josh Perry and Camren Williams opposite juniors Curtis Grant and Ryan Shazier.
Now with Perkins leaving the Buckeyes, the battle to start essentially goes down to those two. At this moment not including the incoming freshmen, OSU has just seven linebackers on the roster.
The Buckeyes are going to get a major influx of linebackers both this year and next, including incoming freshmen Trey Johnson and Mike Mitchell, both of whom were heavily recruited and bring great reputations to Columbus.
It's not realistic to expect either to start as true freshmen, although both could step in immediately and provide some depth.
The issue that Perkins' departure does remind us is that Ohio State's linebacker play for the most part has been subpar for the past two seasons.
OSU has long been known as a linebacker factory, producing stars from Tom Cousineau to Chris Spielman, and more recently A.J. Hawk and James Laurinaitis.
To see linebackers struggle so much in the past two seasons for the Buckeyes, given the history of the position at the school, is shocking.
And it's hasn't been a spiraling slope downward, either.
The plunge of productivity from the unit as a whole has been very sharp and it just hasn't gotten near the level where it has been in the past.
Losing Perkins, although we won't know how good he could have been, doesn't help the position getting back on track.
OSU already has to worry enough with whether or not Grant will be able to recover after losing his starting job less than a month into the season a year ago.
The Buckeyes have to really hope either Perry or Williams can have a big season so they may begin to refortify the linebacker position in the coming year.
Shazier is the only non-question mark in the group. He needs someone else to join him there.

Lichborne: Reviewing death knight talents for patch 5.4
Lead Systems Designer Greg "Ghostcrawler" Street has indicated that Blizzard is pretty happy with the new Mists of Pandaria talent design, and I have to agree with him. While it does suck to wait 15 levels between new talent choices while leveling a new alt, otherwise the new talent system allows real flexibility and interesting, meaningful choices, arguably more than we had under the 51 or 31 point talent systems, where almost every tier had a clear best choice for whatever role you were playing.
That said, there's always room for improvement, and the devs have mentioned they plan to use patch 5.4 as another opportunity to go over talent trees and bolster talents that see less use or otherwise feel underpowered. With that in mind, this week we'll look at the death knight tree and pick out some candidates for a patch 5.4 redesign.

The issue of gender and character creation
This is a topic that I've personally found very interesting over the many years I've been playing World of Warcraft and MMOs/RPGs in general. I've never considered it strange to play the gender opposite who you are in real life. Most of my characters in games are women. I also play men, I have male alt characters in WoW, but the majority of my characters are women. My death knight is a man. My paladin is a woman. My priest is a woman. My warrior is a woman. My rogue, who is now my main character, is also a woman.

Angry Birds soda release makes for huge sales jump
Yes indeed: Angry Birds soda. A Nordic beverage company named Olvi got the rights from Rovio to make some Angry Birds-branded sugar water, and apparently it's a huge hit for them, raising the company's sales by 85 percent. Exports were especially huge, going from 3 percent of Olvi's market to a whole 20 percent, with exports focusing primarily on Spain, Norway and the UK. There's no indication that any of this drink has made it over to the United States for sale just yet, so if you have a chance to try some, you'll have to let us know how it tastes. Hopefully "eggy" isn't a word included in the description.
This is far from the last we'll hear about Angry Birds merch, especially with that movie set to arrive in the next few years. You can bet that even bigger companies are looking at sales figures like this, and then lining up to make a deal with Rovio as fast as they can.

How Can the Washington Redskins Defense Improve Their Pass Defense
Good defense stops opponents consistently throughout games, while great defenses are capable of changing the flow of a game with big plays and smothering opposing offenses to the point of submission. The Washington Redskins, at least in the last few seasons, have been neither great nor good.
Atrocious pass defense has played a major part in the overall average performance of the 'Skins defense.
Even with the makings of an elite unit, at least from a pass rush standpoint, the Redskins always seem to hit a bump along the way, be it injuries, or just poor play from players they expected to be big contributors.
Regardless of the reasons for the Washington defense finishing 31st and 28th in two of the last three season, here are the ways they can improve their pass defense, and take the next step toward becoming an elite defense.

Tim Cook says Apple has already acquired nine companies in 2013
During his appearance at All Things D last night, Tim Cook mentioned that Apple in 2013 is acquiring companies at a faster clip than in years past. In previous years, Cook noted, Apple acquired an average of six companies per year. Not even six months into 2013, Cook explained Apple has already acquired nine companies.
Of course, Cook stressed that Apple isn't going to announce all of its acquisitions, but rather just the ones it has to. This certainly makes sense given Apple's penchant for surgical acquisitions. For a company as secretive as Apple, having each and every acquisition made public would undoubtedly shed light on Apple's future software ambitions, and perhaps, product roadmap.
While on the topic of acquisitions, Cook reiterated a point he's made in the past; namely that he isn't opposed to the idea of a large-scale acquisition, but would only feel comfortable pulling the trigger if the targeted company would help further Apple's product goals.
We're always looking; I think we'll do more of these in the future. We aren't currently looking at a big one, but we aren't opposed to doing that if it made sense. We ask: "Would it help us make a great product, and would the culture fit at Apple?"
As a point of interest, you might recall that Apple in late 2009 did attempt to buy out Dropbox.
On the flip side, Cook confirmed that Apple did not make a bid to acquire the popular navigation app Waze.
As for Apple's nine acquisitions thus far in 2013, the only one that has been made public was its reported $20 million deal to acquire the "indoor GPS" company WiFiSLAM back in March.

Premier League: Does Cesc Fabregas to Manchester United Make Sense?
Manchester United have reportedly opened negotiations with Barcelona for the transfer of Cesc Fabregas. According to ESPN, David Moyes is ready to make the Spanish midfielder his first acquisition in a summer of change at Old Trafford.
Does this deal make sense for both Manchester United and Barcelona? Before analysing exactly that, run to your kitchen and grab a pinch of salt.
Media speculation has long linked Fabregas with a move away from the Camp Nou. His inability to maintain a regular starting place and failure to make an impact in his preferred midfield role has repeatedly forced the mainstream press to suggest his future lies away from Catalonia.
Fabregas has always maintained he wants to end his career with the La Liga champions, but after a lack of opportunities during the 2012-13 campaign, the former Arsenal skipper is once again being touted for a sensational return to the Premier League.
The 26-year-old has made 39 appearances in all competitions across the last year, many of which placed him away from the centre of midfield. Although effective in the "False 9" role for Spain, a certain Lionel Messi continues to deliver in a similar position for Barcelona.
Similarly, the consistent performances of Xavi also stop Fabregas from gaining momentum in the heart of Tito Vilanova's side. Although a return to Arsenal has been mentioned, recent indications suggest David Moyes is ready to spend big on the World Cup-winning midfielder.
Manchester United's midfield is undoubtedly going to change over the summer. With the retirement of Paul Scholes and players such as Anderson rumoured to be leaving, the incoming Scotsman has a real opportunity to stamp his own philosophy into United's engine room.
Michael Carrick needs a combative partner. His grace on the ball played a huge role in Manchester United's run to Premier League success during the 2012-13 campaign, but he needs a physical specimen to shoulder some of his defensive responsibility.
Everton's Marouane Fellaini and PSV Eindhoven's Kevin Strootman are two candidates outlined for this role. Both offer natural physicality and the ability to break down possession in key areas. They are versatile in different ways and can both fit into a number of roles within the team.
Fellaini's working relationship with Moyes would be a major bonus, while Strootman's experience of playing against elite clubs should see him fit straight into the side.
These signings must be top priority. Despite Fabregas being the bigger global name, his arrival should not become a matter of great importance until United have secured their defensive destroyer. It is difficult to pinpoint exactly where Fabregas would fit into the Old Trafford setup, even if Wayne Rooney moves on.
If the Englishman packs his bags, Moyes must utilise Shinji Kagawa in his favoured No.10 role. The Japanese superstar struggled during his first season with the Red Devils, and like Fabregas, was forced to play out of position. Imagining Rooney departs, it would be immensely harsh on the former Dortmund man if Fabregas arrived and took priority behind Robin van Persie.
Or would it? David Moyes rarely builds his team on traditional wingers and prefers to utilise versatile midfield diamonds. With Rooney gone, Kagawa could start on the left and Fabregas gets his role behind former teammate Van Persie. The interchanging of Kagawa and Fabregas would be akin to Steven Pienaar and Fellaini's roles at Everton, a lineup that worked extremely well for Moyes.
In order for this to take place, plenty of movement needs to be made in the transfer market. If United are to relinquish the width of natural wingers such as Nani and Antonio Valencia, a move for Fabregas would make absolute sense.
His intelligence when working between the midfield and forward lines certainly outweighs his ability to dribble beyond people, but this could work alongside Kagawa and Van Persie's willingness to drop. Even so, without Rooney's work ethic and physical presence behind the Dutchman, Moyes would certainly have to sign a defensive midfielder in order to counterbalance Fabregas in his preferred position.
Right now, this transfer is a long way off and only makes sense if Moyes is about to change United's entire shape. Unless Fabregas is willing to play a traditional midfield role away from his boyhood club—or Manchester United decide Rooney's exit is for the best—Moyes has far more pressing concerns to address before landing the luxury midfielder.
Does Cesc Fabregas' potential transfer to Manchester United make sense? Let me know in the comments section below and be sure to follow me on Twitter right here:

Caroline Wozniacki Eliminated by Bojana Jovanovski at 2013 French Open
Caroline Wozniacki's woes at the French Open and majors in general continued Wednesday as the former world No. 1 was ousted in the second round by Bojana Jovanovski, 7-6, 6-3.
At a distance, this is a shocking result. Wozniacki is currently 10th in the WTA rankings— Jovanovski is ranked 47th.
However, it is not really all that shocking. The 22-year-old has looked like anything but a No. 1 player this year. Entering the French Open she had a singles record of just 16-12 on the year and has yet to claim a title. These results are just part of a diminishing trend. On top of that, as Sports Illustrated points out, Jovanovski has given Wozniacki trouble before.
Jovanovski finished with 33 winners to Wozniacki's 13, broke Wozniacki three times and won 77 percent of her first serve points. She will advance to play Svetlana Kuznetsova in the third round
Wozniacki finished last year with a 50-21 record and two titles. That came a year after she had six titles and went 63-17 overall.
Tennis analysts Ben Rothnenberg tweeted about her disappointing year.
However, even when Wozniacki was in better form, she has never fared well at the French. While Wozniacki covers a lot of ground and moves well, something that is a staple of great clay-court players, she lacks power.
More and more, power is taking over at the French, and Wozniacki is at a bigger disadvantage in this department on clay. While the clay is slower than hard and grass courts, it also eliminates power players can generate off of returns.
Wozniacki has always used this to her benefit as she is great in volleys and has a nice ground stroke.
As a result, Wozniacki has never made it past the quarterfinals at Roland Garros, which she did in 2010. Last year, she was ousted in the third round to Kaia Kanepi, and she fell in the third round at the French Open the year before that.
Given all of this, Wozniacki has to be thrilled that the tennis action is moving away from clay. Heading into this year's French Open, she was just 2-5 on the year on the slick surface, and for her career, she was just 65-26 on clay.
So, Wozniacki will now turn her sights towards the remainder of the season as she looks to regain her form and capture the first major of her career.

Who Will Win the San Francisco 49ers' No. 2 Wide Receiver Battle?
When the San Francisco 49ers acquired Anquan Boldin in March, their depth at wide receiver was the least of their concerns.
But with Michael Crabtree out indefinitely with a torn Achilles, they have more questions than answers at the position.
Boldin will almost assuredly be the No. 1 option to begin the 2013 season. The other starter is entirely up in the air.
The following five players are candidates to climb to No. 2 on San Francisco's wide receiver depth chart.
Kyle Williams
Kyle Williams posted on Instagram that he's received a green light by his doctor about his knee, via NinersNation.com. Although this is a positive step for Williams, some athletes need two years to return to form after an ACL tear.
Even if Williams is healthy, he doesn't project as a big-time threat on the outside. Due to his smaller stature, he figures to line up mostly in the slot.
In 2011, Williams had the 41st-best score in Pro Football Focus' wide receiver rankings (subscription required), accumulating much of his stats in the slot. Offensive coordinator Greg Roman gushed about Williams' ability in slot early in the 2012 season, via CSN Bay Area.
"A lot of times in the slot, you're going to end up running routes on a defender and it's either the first read or you got to get open quick in a short area," Roman said. "He excels in that area."
Expect Williams to make the team and see lots of time as the slot receiver in three-wide receiver sets if healthy. Essentially, he has a great chance to be the No. 3 receiver, but not the No. 2 wideout in San Francisco's base sets.
Ricardo Lockette
Jim Harbaugh seems genuinely intrigued by Ricardo Lockette.
"“I’m really looking forward to Ricardo Lockette’s progress,” Harbaugh said in March, via the San Francisco Chronicle. “I can’t wait to see what he does. A real inflection point for him is coming.”
Harbaugh said on 95.7 The Game that Lockette, Quinton Patton and A.J. Jenkins will battle for Crabtree's playing time while Mario Manningham and Williams are injured, via Pro Football Talk.
Lockette is a burner, putting up a 4.37 40-yard-dash time at the 2011 NFL combine. The 6'2", 211-pound wideout spent most of the 2012 season on the San Francisco practice squad, where he likely learned much of the 49ers playbook.
Harbaugh has been known to play games with the media, but I don't think his praise for Lockette is a joke. I believe he's going to give him a fair chance at starter's snaps if Manningham isn't healthy.
A.J. Jenkins
Nothing about A.J. Jenkins' college tape overly impresses me. Sure, he has great speed and sure hands, but he's not the all that big, strong or explosive after the catch.
The 49ers reportedly loved that he has massive hands when they drafted him, but they possibly misjudged his overall talent.
Now, the 2012 first-round pick is under pressure to perform in his second season. Jenkins reportedly bulked up a bit this offseason, but are we to expect that a few pounds of muscle and year of learning is the difference between being a non-factor and a starting wide receiver?
I'm not buying it.
Jenkins should see the field his fair share when a third or fourth wide receiver is needed, but the next receiver might just be the more talented prospect even though he was picked three rounds later.
Quinton Patton
He may not have the top seed that Jenkins has, but Patton appears much more explosive on tape. He makes catches in traffic and excels at juking defenders after the catch.
Like Jenkins, Patton needs to bulk up (only eight bench press reps at the combine); however, he was the more physical player in college.
My guess is Harbaugh and the coaching staff will fall in love with his feistiness. Patton has natural route-running skills in the red zone, and at the very least he should be utilized there this season.
Mario Manningham
Mario Manningham wasn't tearing up the stat sheet in 2012, but he was having a sneaky good season before his knee injury.
His overall score on Pro Football Focus was higher than Victor Cruz, James Jones and Dez Bryant's. A big reason for his high score was his catch percentage. Of the 55 times he was targeted, he made 42 catches. The 76.4-percent clip was fourth-best in the league.
To put it simply, he'll be starting if he's healthy by the beginning of the 2012 season. But will he be?
He tore his ACL and MCL in late December. Although he's reportedly running and cutting, he may not be ready by Week 1. And even if he does play, there's no guarantee he'll have the same explosiveness he had in 2012.
Conclusion
If Manningham is healthy by Week 1, I'd be surprised if he isn't the No. 2 receiver. However, I'm guessing he'll sit out the first few games, which opens the door for Lockette, Jenkins and Patton.
Between Jenkins and Patton, I believe the former Louisiana Tech star has the edge. It's possible that the Niners were giving Jenkins a year to learn with the intent of giving him a prominent role in 2013. But when the coaches see Patton making plays in training camp, I believe they'll want to get him on the field as much as possible.
Lockette is the biggest wild card of all. I bet he makes the team and sees the field early in the season before Manningham is healthy. However, he's a long shot to beat out both Patton and Jenkins, players the Niners used draft capital on.
Don't expect any decision on the starter to come anytime soon. Harbaugh and Co. will likely take their time evaluating all the receivers before coming to a consensus on the No. 2 wideout before Week 1.
Tim Cook: Apple will open up its APIs
Tim Cook's had a lot to say today at D11, from talking about wearables to the next versions of iOS and OS X, and he just gave devs for those software platforms a bit of good news. That's right, folks, Tim Cook has pledged that Apple will open up its APIs more, but "not to the degree that we put the customer at risk of having a bad experience." When pressed about giving developers the ability to build better experiences and present customers with more choice -- like say, having access to Swype or SwiftKey -- Cook defended Apple's current, more restrictive policies saying that "the customer pays us to make some of these choices on their behalf." So there you have it, the folks at Apple only let you use the stock software keyboard on your iPhone because you paid them to do so.

According to USA Today, a Korean freighter with the first 61 examples of the luxury sedan packed away in its belly has lost engine power in the western Pacific Ocean, and is adrift.
The ship, Morning Spruce, has apparently been without power for several days and is floating in the Sea of Okhotsk. It isn't clear when it will be repaired or reach US shores to discharge its contents. As a result of the wandering Spruce, Hyundai has reportedly had to reschedule some of its planned marketing efforts for the new model.
The 2014 Equus receives a suite of changes inside and out, including freshened styling, revamped center stack controls, a new instrument cluster and additional tech. Underneath, the rear-drive sedan gets a reworked suspension and a new sport mode to ease some of its nautical-by-nature handling. The 5.0-liter Tau V8 and eight-speed transmission - updates for 2012 - stay the course for 2014.

Blood Pact: Combat log kung fu for warlocks
Have you ever tried to read the combat log? Maybe you're on the PTR testing a spell change or you want to know how often a new trinket procs, so you open the combat log chat window and start reading.
You get twenty-something lines down before you realize something horrifying -- that's only one second of combat. Your jaw slowly falls to the floor and you reach up to pull your hair out as you contemplate reading a combat log for an entire raid fight -- that can sometimes last more than six hundred seconds and includes far more actors than just you and the training dummy.
Luckily for us, when events are printed in a specified format without too much variety, computers can read and process --or parse -- these lines magnitudes faster than we humans can. World of Logs has graphs and charts to help us understand our performance, but it also includes what is basically Google for your combat log. Just like there are tips to speed up and pinpoint your browser searches, there are tricks you can use to query events better in the World of Logs expression editor.

Daily iPhone App: Combo Crew does beat-em-up on a touchscreen
Combo Crew is an interesting experiment that just showed up this week on iOS. Beat-em-ups and fighting games are great on consoles, where you've got plenty of buttons and d-pads to pull off various moves with. But while they've appeared on iOS a few times (Capcom's Street Fighter IV has done fairly well on the App Store), usually these games on a touchscreen tend to just fall back on virtual buttons, which are generally way more clunky and less precise than physical moving parts.
Combo Crew, however, is an attempt to make a beat-em-up redesigned from scratch for the iOS touchscreen. It's a game made by the Game Bakers, a really excellent team based in France that's done a great job with the Squids turn-based combat series. Combo Crew has everything you'd want a beat-em-up game to have, including multiple characters, combination-based and counter attacks, and lots of cool super moves and punches. But the difference here is in the controls. Instead of pressing buttons, you swipe across the screen to perform your moves in sequence: Swipe once to attack, swipe and hold to charge up, swipe two fingers for a combo attack or tap the screen for a counter.
It works -- mostly. Just like a traditional beat-em-up game, Combo Crew's moveset gets more complicated over time, so that once mastered, you're able to keep combos going for a long time, scoring tons of points and taking down the bad guys with ease. Unfortunately, the biggest issue is that you're swiping right across the screen you're playing on, so sometimes it can be hard to see where you need to go. Thus, precision isn't always exactly where you want it to be. If you swipe the screen, you will do an attack, but there's no way to move around the screen independently, and as a result, you don't always attack the exact enemy you want, which can be a problem at higher levels.
Combo Crew is still a lot of fun, however, and The Game Bakers deserve a lot of credit for taking on such a tough genre to do on a touchscreen in such a creative way. There's even a co-op mode, and an endless-scoring game with plenty of various progression items to unlock and earn. If you like beat-em-ups and want something to enjoy on your iPhone, this one is a must-play for sure, just to see how it all works. The game is currently just $1.99, too, so if you're interested at all, give this one a download.

EV outfit Better Place calls it quits, set to undergo liquidation
Better Place's plan for electric cars with swappable batteries is coming to an end. Despite a change in leadership and a streamlining effort over the past six months, the Israeli EV maker has filed a court motion for liquidation, citing insufficient cash to continue operations and a failure to raise the necessary funds. According to Israel Corporation, the firm's controlling shareholder, other investors willing to pitch in the vast amount of money needed couldn't be found. With approximately $812 million lost in operations and deploying battery exchange stations since 2007, and $454 million of that within 2012 alone, it's estimated that just recouping those loses would take $500 million and four years.
"Unfortunately, after a year's commercial operation, it was clear to us that despite many satisfied customers, the wider public take up would not be sufficient and that the support from the car producers was not forthcoming," said Better Place CEO Dan Cohen. Sure, it might be curtains for the company, but the existing battery network looks like it might live on, as the liquidator is being asked to "maintain the functioning of the network."
[Thanks, Michael]
