By the time today's practice wraps up, the Giants will be one week into their training camp in Albany. I've combed through some of the best camp coverage to bring you updates on how the rookies are looking, while adding my analysis for good measure.
Running Back David Wilson
As of Sunday, ESPN.com's Dan Graziano still had Wilson behind D.J. Ware on the Giants' depth chart:
Don't assume rookie Wilson wins the backup running back job just because he was picked in the first round. The Giants love him, but they'll be perfectly willing to keep him in the background and develop him if he doesn't show enough in camp and someone such as Ware does. Wilson is getting a lot of practice reps, so they will be able to make a thorough judgment on him, but he's still behind Ware on the depth chart.
That was only two practices into camp, and I have a hard time seeing the Giants leaving their first-round pick behind two other backs on the depth chart.
Plus, the team he's running with doesn't mean he hasn't started strong. CBSSports.com's Alex Raskin notes that indeed he has. Remember, Tom Coughlin is a conservative head coach.
One more take, this time from SNY's Dan Orlando:
David Wilson is so fast, that he defies physics. Instead of evading defenders and ducking out of pounds, he juked two DBs and appeared to roll his ankle so fast, that he avoided injury.
It won't be long before Wilson's the obvious No. 2, and maybe even the top dog.
Wide Receiver Rueben Randle
The guys at Big Blue View note that he's shown flashes early on, and provide this quote from Eli Manning:
I think Reuben has done a good job. I think he has a pretty good understanding of what is going on with the offense, after such a short time of being here. You see some skill set in his route running, some speed, a toughness also, being physical in his routes, getting open. You see the potential.
Michael Eisen of Giants.com also notes that Randle had a couple nice grabs on Sunday, but I'm not hearing a whole lot about Randle, who stood out earlier in the offseason. tI would've been nice to see him stand out quickly again, but let's see what goes down in preseason action.
Cornerback Jayron Hosley
The third-round pick out of Virginia Tech missed several days early in camp due to a knee laceration, which sounds way worse than it is. It hurt a lot, though, because Hosley has/had a chance to earn some serious reps with Terrell Thomas down. But he's back now and has a chance to take a leap. I fully expect Hosley to compete hard with Prince Amukamara and the slew of veteran corners on the depth chart for starting opportunities.
Tight End Adrien Robinson
All right, I'll admit this isn't the most reliable source in the world, but I'm not in Albany so I'll take what I can get. Picked this up from a Big Blue View commenter:
Actually saw Robinson pick Bennett up underneath the armpits and carry him for a good 5 or so seconds, in a blocking drill.
"Flynner" also noted that "Randle makes everything look absolutely effortless," for what it's worth.
Defensive Tackle Markus Kuhn
The German made one really good play on Day 2, according to Big Blue View. It's too early to draw any conclusions on Kuhn. Same goes for fourth- and sixth-round tackles Brandon Mosley and Matt McCants, who have barely been mentioned by beat writers.
Wide Receiver David Douglas
From the guys at Big Blue View:
Douglas, a 6-1, 205-pound undrafted free agent from Arizona has made himself noticed. He had a good day Monday, including making one nice catch in traffic and setting up Antwuan Molden with a beautiful in-fake before blowing past him to haul in a deep ball. He caught 65 passes for Arizona last season, and is a player to keep an eye on the rest of camp.
And more from Michael Eisen of Giants.com:
Coughlin praised rookie free agent wide receiver David Douglas, who he said, "has had a heck of a preseason, for four practices and a half hour."
I'm going to be watching Douglas closely, or at least as closely as I can from Toronto. The receiver position is wide open in New York, and although Jerrel Jernigan has looked really good and Randle probably still has an edge, it looks like Douglas will have a distant shot at making the final 53.
Linebacker Jake Muasau
After some hype in the offseason, I've heard little about Muasau thus far. And now he's out with a hamstring injury. The crowd might simply be too big at that position.
