Controversial WWE superstar CM Punk has opened up to Jimmy Traina on Sports Illustrated's The Hot Clicks Podcast about a wide variety of subjects, including what he thinks of wrestler-turned-actor The Rock (aka Dwayne Johnson) ahead of WWE's Survivor Series pay-per-view this Sunday.
Punk starts by talking about the grueling European tour, his collections of tattoos and living the straight-edge lifestyle. "It's not really hard," Punk says, when asked by Traina if it difficult to adhere to a lifestyle of no drinking or drugs. Although he expresses regret that many of his straight-edge friends from Chicago have fallen off the wagon over the years.
Interestingly, he criticises The Miz main-eventing Wrestlemania, someone he doesn't appear to rate as a talent, while the writing team struggled to come up with ideas of him in the run up to the show. Punk claims he has been honest about this backstage and told The Miz of feelings about this face-to-face.
During the inerview, he also talks about nearly leaving WWE over the summer, and his current relationship with WWE owner Vince McMahon. "I don't know if Vince ever got me. I don't know if he still does," Punk said, although he acknowledges that McMahon does recognize the reaction he gets from fans and has pushed him to the main event lesson in recent times.
He also critiques the WWE booking team habit of "cutting the legs off" up and coming talent like Sheamus, Wade Barrett and Jack Swagger, also pointing to his lukewarm first run in 2008.
Most notably, he talks about The Rock, who is main-eventing this week's Survivor Series. From a business perspective, Punk praises the move to bring him back: "If Rock is goign to put asses in seats, good for us."
But he also slams Johnson for a few reasons, particularly his habit of claiming he is "never leaving the WWE again" before proceeding to, you know, leave WWE fans again (which Cena has been critical of too).
He also questions whether Rock is really the draw people think he is. Talking about the huge WM buyrate, which was largely atrributed to Rock's cameo, Punk said, "Was that due to Rock? Or me and Randy Orton? Or Cena and the Miz?" He also notes that while Survivor Series sold out Madison Square Garden, something that was also attributed to Rock, WWE can always sell out Madison Square Garden.
Punk suggests Rock has gotten an ego since going to Hollywood full time:
No matter if I like or hate who I'm working with, I say 'hello' to them I just don't appreciate anyone going from limo, to dressing room, to the guerilla, to the ring, and not saying 'hi' to anyone. That's what he does.
He then scathingly says of Johnson: "He lives in a fantasy."
Punk also talks about dealing with rude fans, video games and sports in this great interview, which is sure to get everyone talking.
