Philadelphia Sports: Is There Anything to Root for Anymore?

There could not have been a worse weekend as a Philadelphia fan. The NBA is in a lockout for 76er fans, the Phillies were eliminated from postseason play, and the “Dream Team” Eagles fell to 1-4. However, the new-look Flyers played two impressive games, starting 2-0.

So, the question is for Philadelphia fans, is there any reason to watch sports anymore? Here’s a recap of every Philadelphia team”s weekend:

 

Phillies

Touted for the World Series the second Cliff Lee was signed, the Phillies lost the NLDS 3-2 to the St. Louis Cardinals. Pitching clearly wasn’t the problem. Roy Halladay pitched a gem, but was outdueled in a 1-0 game by his close friend Chris Carpenter.

For the second straight season, Ryan Howard made the last out in a situation where he could’ve been a star. Not only did he not come through in the clutch, he tore his left Achilles tendon, which will cut into some of the 2012 season.

This offseason, with 39-year-old Raul Ibanez coming off the payroll, the Phillies should have some room to sign some free agents. The big question is whether they will re-sign Jimmy Rollins or not.

 

Eagles

How much longer can Andy Reid last in Philly? With the Eagles falling to 1-4, all Eagles fans are thinking the same thing: Fire Andy Reid. Like the Phillies, after big free-agent signings the Eagles were expected to win the Super Bowl. The same problems have occurred in every game this season. Missed tackles, penalties, blown coverage and turnovers have plagued the Eagles.

Juan Castillo clearly hasn’t figured out how to use the Eagles' star-studded secondary. The secondary has been mediocre at best this season. Castillo has been playing Nnamdi Asomugha in zone, neutralizing his shutdown cornerback talent.

In order for his tenure to continue, Reid better get his team together now. It is “gut-check” time in Philadelphia, according to Cullen Jenkins. If this Eagles can’t turn their season around, it will be the most disappointing season in team history.

 

Flyers

The only Philadelphia team to have a good weekend was the Flyers. However, the Flyers' 2-0 start was overshadowed by the Phillies' and Eagles' woes.

The Ilya Bryzgalov era got off to a great start as the Flyers beat the defending champion Bruins, 2-1, and the rival Devils, 3-0. Jaromir Jagr scored his 1,600th career point, and young gun Claude Giroux showed fans why the team traded Brad Richards and Jeff Carter, scoring two goals in as many games.

New addition Wayne Simmonds also looked promising, scoring a goal and showing how his playing style fits in with the Flyers' system.

It’s tough to predict a season after two games, but if the Flyers can continue to play like they have, they’re bound for a deep playoff run.
