UFC middleweight contender Chael Sonnen has recently fulfilled the terms of the suspension issued to him by the California State Athletic Commission.
Since that suspension came to an end, Sonnen has called out fighters in three weight divisions, dropping names such as Anderson Silva, Wanderlei Silva, Lyoto Machida and heavyweight Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva.
Only one of the fighters that Sonnen has recently called out is a reigning UFC champion, which ordinarily would not be an issue, but Sonnen is on record as saying, “If you stick a microphone in a guy's face and he calls out anybody but the champion, (UFC matchmaker) Joe Silva should fax him a pink slip right then."
After falling to Anderson Silva at UFC 117, Sonnen offered the above to MMAJunkie.com.
In an interview with MMAFighting.com that was conducted before UFC 132, Sonnen said, "I want an easy fight, Anderson Silva, Wanderlei Silva, either of the Silvas. Bigfoot Silva, they all suck. Give me a Silva."
It’s no surprise that a pink slip was not issued from Joe Silva, but none of the “easy” fights that Sonnen asked for came to fruition, either. Instead, Sonnen was booked against rising star Brian Stann.
The fight against Stann, which is slated for UFC 136, will be Sonnen’s first since he tapped out to Anderson Silva at UFC 117.
Sonnen appeared to be well on his way to taking Silva’s title when the champion saw an opening and clamped on a triangle choke that forced Sonnen to tap at the 3:10 mark of the fifth and final round.
One can only imagine what Sonnen would have had to say if he had been released after his call out of fighters other than UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.
