With the NHL's regular season dwindling down, there is a clear line drawn at the top of the standings. As of March 31, five teams have 100 points or more, and two are within two points of the plateau. For the purposes of this piece, that is the line that has been established for the "top contenders."
This season has been an interesting one, to say the least, and there have been many different storylines such as a decrease in scoring and the rise of the backup goaltender. Each of the top contenders are where they are in the standings for a reason, and there's a central theme that explains most of, if not all the major successes from the 2014-15 tilt.
There are certainly a number of ways you can spin it, but here are the essential key themes and words that best describe each top contender.

General managers defend draft secrets as if they're the goings-on of Area 51.
The speculation about these secrets reaches a new level during the month-long run-up to the draft. While free-agency acquisitions and team needs can provide hints about a GM's plans, the remaining gaps are filled with mock drafts and player comparisons—both of which are rarely brought to fruition.
But the best way to predict the future is to fully understand the past. When it comes to the New York Giants, we can get an idea of what general manager Jerry Reese might do in 2015 by taking a critical eye to his recent draft classes.
Do that and you're left with three clear clues to Reese's current draft plan.
They Won't Shy Away From A Playmaker With The Ninth Pick
Sure, the Giants have needs; so does every other team. Big Blue's biggest holes just happen to be at offensive line and safety, perhaps the two least sexy positions to draft in the first round.
Now, it's possible Reese is so concerned with his hole at right guard that he picks Iowa's Brandon Scherff to fill it right away. Maybe he's more worried about the defensive backfield, so he opts for Alabama's Landon Collins with the ninth overall selection. Bleacher Report's Matt Miller shared his thoughts on who the Giants should take at No. 9:
Both of these options would make the Giants a better team, but Reese won't fail to realize the value of his top-10 pick. After all, it's the first one he's had since taking over as GM in 2007.
There's a school of draft thought that says to ignore the team's needs and instead select the best player available. This method maximizes the value of each pick and virtually eliminates the dreaded reach. History tells us that Reese is a likely subscriber.
This theory explains why New York didn't select a single tight end last spring, when the position appeared to be the team's biggest weakness. It also explains why Reese selected a receiver, Odell Beckham Jr. out of LSU, 12th overall when the Giants could have addressed a major need by snatching up a quality O-lineman in Notre Dame's Zack Martin.
Drafting by best-player available has a funny way of working itself out: Former undrafted rookie Larry Donnell ended up having a breakout season, and Beckham became the NFL's Offensive Rookie of the Year for his record-setting campaign.
If the Giants' 6-10 record in 2014 hasn't scared Reese away from this draft strategy, expect him to select a playmaker with the ninth overall pick. Receivers Amari Cooper of Alabama and Kevin White of West Virginia can't be ruled out of his plans and neither can pass-rushers Vic Beasley of Clemson and Randy Gregory of Nebraska.
They Will Target Prospects Who Can Start Immediately
In his 11 seasons as the New York Giants' head coach, the most repeated criticism of Tom Coughlin has been his reluctance to play rookies. Back when the team was winning Super Bowls, the reliance upon veteran talent was at least justified. Now that New York finds itself in more of a win-or-else situation, getting rookies who can contribute right away is more important than ever.
Reese has done more to help rectify this issue as of late. Instead of picking boom-or-bust projects, the GM has targeted more surefire prospects.
His 2013 first-round selection, Syracuse's Justin Pugh, started all 16 games of his rookie season at right tackle. Last year, Odell Beckham Jr. started 11 of the 12 games for which he was healthy. That's a total turnaround from the team's previous three first-round picks: Jason Pierre-Paul (no starts in 2010), Prince Amukamara (no starts in 2011) and David Wilson (two starts in 2012).
Some of New York's other recent picks have come along quickly, as well. Johnathan Hankins didn't contribute a lot as a rookie, but he became the defensive line's most imposing interior presence in 2014. His classmate, Damontre Moore, has shown signs of growth, too, even though he's been slow to snag a starting role at defensive end.
The 2014 draft class, however, serves as the best example of what Reese should be looking for this spring. It was a class full of major contributors, high-character guys who didn't need time to develop—what some might describe as "NFL-ready."
There are guys like this to be had in the middle and late rounds of every draft, waiting to be uncovered. They can step in and start right away, like fifth-round gem Devon Kennard did at strong-side linebacker last season. These are the rookies who will help New York win games in 2015.
Reese should have an eye on Virginia's Anthony Harris, a mid-round prospect who can solve New York's woes at safety. Harris can play center field (eight interceptions in 2013) and thump like a linebacker (108 tackles in 2014). Most importantly, he was named a captain of his Cavaliers as a senior.
They Will Find A Defensive Peg For Steve Spagnuolo To Build Around
Last year, Ben McAdoo got hooked up. Think about it: It's pretty tough to go wrong in your first year as offensive coordinator when all you have to do is call for Eli Manning to fling it in Odell Beckham Jr.'s direction.
Beckham became a national sensation for his otherworldly performances each week, as the exceptional rookie single-handedly turned a six-win team into must-watch television. Now, Reese is charged with finding New York's OBJ of the defense.
Steve Spagnuolo deserves the same treatment upon his return to the Giants' defensive coordinator role. He made improbable things happen—such as beating the undefeated New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII—when given superior defensive talents, such as Michael Strahan, Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck.
Now, back with the Giants for a second stint, Spagnuolo already has his Strahan in world-beater Jason Pierre-Paul. He may also have his Umenyiora in slender speed-rusher Damontre Moore. What Spags really needs is a new Tuck.
If Florida's Dante Fowler Jr. somehow falls to the Giants in the first round, he would be their pick. Fowler (6'3", 261 lbs) fits the Tuck mold and is explosive off the edge. Spagnuolo could line him up in a two- or three-point stance to get him on the field as much as possible.
However, if Fowler is already scooped up by the time the Giants pick, the rest of the pass-rushers in that range look more like 3-4 outside linebackers than 4-3 defensive ends. New York shouldn't settle for someone like Missouri's Shane Ray, if the fit is imperfect. After all, Tuck was a third-round selection out of Notre Dame in 2005.
Some defensive ends Reese should consider after the first round are Mississippi State's Preston Smith and Norfolk State's Lynden Trail. While few draft experts would consider Smith or Trail among the 2015 class' elite pass-rushing prospects, both players have the potential to become the NFL's next unheralded star.
Kevin Boilard writes about the New York Giants at Bleacher Report.

The 2015 NCAA tournament has been indescribably fantastic, and the best might be yet to come. A pair of outstanding games await on Saturday night when Duke faces Michigan State and Kentucky draws Wisconsin.
We've got a full breakdown of the teams, stars and stories of the Final Four posted here, but for those of us who enjoy bar trivia factoids, let's have some fun with numbers.
Some of these are historical; one is (obviously) fictional. Some are tempo-free and require a subscription to KenPom.com, but most require no knowledge of "advanced metrics" whatsoever.
We'll kick things off with a nice round number.
10: Combined seed number of No. 1 Kentucky, No. 1 Duke, No. 1 Wisconsin and No. 7 Michigan State. In each of the last two years, this number was 18, and in 2011 it was 26. It was nine in 2012, but that group only had one top seed in it. It's been a little while since we had a Final Four grouping this strong.
46: Combined number of Final Four appearances in the history of these four schools. This is Kentucky's 17th Final Four. Duke has been to 16, Michigan State to nine and Wisconsin to four.
15: Combined number of national championships by these schools—16 if you include the one forthcoming on Monday. Kentucky has eight, Duke has four, Michigan State has two and Wisconsin had one way back in 1941.
75: Percent of teams that participated in the Champions Classic in November that reached the Final Four. Kansas is the only one that didn't make it, but the Jayhawks barely earned a participation ribbon for losing to Kentucky by 32 in November. In the other game, Duke beat Michigan State 81-71, in case you're the type to read into box scores from four months ago.
2,532: Career wins by the head coaches in the Final Four: Mike Krzyzewski (1,016), John Calipari (635), Tom Izzo (495) and Bo Ryan (386). Have we mentioned that this is a pretty solid Final Four?
50: Consecutive wins remaining until Kentucky ties UCLA's all-time record of 88 in a row.
127.5: Wisconsin's adjusted offensive efficiency rating, No. 1 in the country.
124.1: Michigan's adjusted offensive efficiency rating during the 2013-14 season. This was previously the highest AOE posted by any team in the KenPom.com era (dating back to the 2001-02 season). This year's Wisconsin is good at offense.
39.2: Kentucky's defensive effective field-goal percentage.
41.4: Memphis' defensive effective field-goal percentage during the 2008-09 season (Calipari's last season with the Tigers). This was previously the record during the KenPom.com era. Kentucky is good at defense. It will be quite the contrast in strengths when the Badgers and Wildcats go to war on Saturday.
40.0 / 40.7: Assist rate on field goals made against Kentucky and Wisconsin, respectively, ranking them first and second in the nation in that category. At least they have something in common.
16.0: Percent difference between Kentucky's offensive rebounding rate and Wisconsin's defensive rebounding rate, both of which rank in the top six nationally. Something has to give.
14.6: Points per game averaged by Duke's Justise Winslow since Rasheed Sulaimon was dismissed from the team 17 games ago. He was great in the Blue Devils' last two games against Utah and Gonzaga. But don't call it a breakout performance, because he has been solid for two months—despite playing for much of that stretch with a fractured rib, as Krzyzewski told reporters after a Feb. 28 win over Syracuse.
50.0: Three-point percentage (25-of-50) by Wisconsin's opponents thus far in the tournament. There have been plenty of surprising moments in the tourney this year, but North Carolina hitting 8-of-13 three-pointers against the Badgers ranks near the top of the "You've got to be kidding me" list.
11: Double-doubles recorded by Duke's Jahlil Okafor this season.
0: Double-doubles recorded by Okafor in the month of March. He has had a couple of nice games over the past six weeks, but are we sure the ankle that he injured in mid-February is anywhere near 100 percent?
121: How many more free throws Wisconsin has made than the number of free throws Wisconsin's opponents have attempted throughout the season. On average, the Badgers shoot 14.7-of-19.3 from the charity stripe while their opponents shoot 8.1-of-11.6. Patience is a virtue, and defending without fouling is a big advantage.
63.2: Michigan State's free-throw percentage this season—good for 338th in the nation. Though Connecticut was also the No. 7 seed from the East Region when it won the title last year, the Huskies and Spartans couldn't be more different in this regard, as Shabazz Napier and Co. shot 77.7 percent as a team. It hasn't ended Michigan State's run yet, but poor free-throw shooting has a way of manifesting into a disaster.
5.7: Fouls per 40 minutes committed by Kentucky's Karl-Anthony Towns this season. However, that rate has been much higher as of late. Since March 14, he has committed 23 fouls in 123 minutes for a per-40 rate of 7.5. The Wildcats need him to stay on the court in these final two games.
17: Duke's current rank in adjusted defensive efficiency. The Blue Devils were ranked 62nd at the start of the ACC tournament. It's a testament to how great their defense has been in the tournament, but also to how little stock we should put in the oft-cited stat that every national champion since 2002 has ranked in the top 21 in KenPom's ADE. Just by virtue of winning six March Madness games, that number is bound to improve considerably throughout the tournament.
44.5: Points per tournament game averaged by Wisconsin's Frank Kaminsky and Sam Dekker. It's pretty awesome when quality players actually stay for multiple years, isn't it?
20: Big Ten teams that have made the Final Four since 1991, including Michigan State and Wisconsin this year. Michigan State (2000) was the only one to win the title. Coincidentally, there have also been 20 ACC teams in the Final Four since 1991. Eight of those 20 won the title. ACC fans will want to keep that info in their back pocket for the next time a Big Ten fan brags about winning the ACC/B1G challenge thanks to a narrow victory by Penn State or Rutgers.
34: Days after the tournament ends before Tyus Jones celebrates his 19th birthday. We should probably kill the "importance of senior leadership" narrative forever based on the incredible job this 18-year-old has done all year.
18: Total losses suffered by the Final Four teams this season. Michigan State is responsible for 11 of them.
20.7: Kentucky's average margin of victory this year. Very impressive, but still a far cry from UNLV's average margin of victory of 27.6 points going into the 1991 Final Four. Prior to losing to Duke, those undefeated Rebels had only played two games decided by less than 12 points and defeated eight opponents by a margin of 41 or more.
1,992: Times we'll see the replay of Christian Laettner's shot against Kentucky if the Blue Devils and Wildcats meet in the title game.
That's enough bouncing around. Time for a countdown to the Final Four:
10: Games in which Michigan State's Denzel Valentine has recorded at least 10 points, five assists and five rebounds. He is a one-man box score and a nightmare to defend.
9: Projected 2015 first-round draft picks playing on Saturday night. This according to B/R's Jonathan Wasserman's latest mock draft from March 25 in which the following players are projected to be taken in these spots: Towns (No. 1), Okafor (No. 2), Winslow (No. 5), Willie Cauley-Stein (No. 6), Trey Lyles (No. 10), Kaminsky (No. 12), Devin Booker (No. 18), Tyus Jones (No. 25), Dekker (No. 26). There might be a couple NBA scouts in attendance.
8: Scholarship players on Duke's roster—two of which (Grayson Allen and Marshall Plumlee) have played sparingly in the past three games. It doesn't take much for this team to get into foul trouble.
7: Minutes played by Wisconsin's Nigel Hayes in the 2014 semifinal against Kentucky. He'll be a much bigger presence in this year's showdown and could be the X-factor that helps push Wisconsin to a win.
6: Fouls called on Okafor thus far in the tournament. He'll need to continue avoiding whistles and stay on the court if the Blue Devils are going to win this thing.
5: Times at least three No. 1 seeds have made it to the Final Four, including this year. Three made it in 1993, 1997 and 1999, and all four No. 1 seeds advanced to the national semifinals in 2008. Potential good news for Michigan State: Arizona was the oddball as a No. 4 seed in 1997, but that didn't stop the Wildcats from winning it all.
4: Final Fours Kentucky has been to in the past five years. Remember when people said Calipari's "succeed and proceed" strategy would never work?
3: Michigan State players (Valentine, Travis Trice and Bryn Forbes) who have made at least 70 three-pointers this season. Duke only has one such player (Quinn Cook). Neither Kentucky nor Wisconsin has any. Get ready to watch the Spartans let it fly.
2: Wins that Texas Southern had against the RPI Top 200 this year—one against Kansas State and one at Michigan State in late December. Hard to believe that a team from the SWAC could win a road game against a Final Four team.
1: Kentucky players shorter than 6'6" that have scored a point in the tournament. Everyone raves about Kentucky's size in the paint, but don't forget the Wildcats have a huge size advantage on the perimeter, too.
0: Percent chance that we can be friends if you aren't excited about these Final Four games.

During the second half of Duke's Elite Eight matchup against the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Sunday, Blue Devils guard Quinn Cook high-fived a Duke band member after drawing a foul on Gonzaga's Kevin Pangos.
Based on the band member's reaction, he may not wash his hand for a while.
Cook and the Duke band member both have a date with Indianapolis this coming week, as the Blue Devils knocked off the Bulldogs, 66-52, to advance to the Final Four.

Chelsea will have to cough up £75 million this summer if they're serious about signing Real Madrid's Gareth Bale. That's the hefty fee the La Liga giants have set for the wide forward, per the Daily Mail's Rob Shepherd.
He believes the Blues are prepared to pay it, despite Bale potentially preferring to stay in the Spanish capital for one more year. Things have been tough for Bale at club level recently.
Stan Collymore told Bleacher Report's Ryan Bailey Bale is struggling to adjust to playing second fiddle to Los Merengues star attraction Cristiano Ronaldo:
Bale was widely criticised following Los Blanco's recent 2-1 El Clasico defeat to hated rival Barcelona. The Telegraph detailed the former Tottenham Hotspurs star's relative anonymity in Madrid's biggest game of the season.
Bale's car was then attacked by angry fans, per Sky Sports. That incident prompted speculation Bale may opt to return to the Premier League rather than settle his family in a hostile atmosphere, according to Daily Mail writer Pete Jenson.
If Bale does choose the former course, Shepherd named Chelsea as front-runners ahead of Manchester City. He cited the Stamford Bridge Club's advantage amid Financial Fair Play Rules.
Despite any perceived struggles in Madrid, Bale would certainly be an asset at Chelsea. His incredible pace, powerful left-foot shot and aerial prowess make him a lethal attacker.
Bale would benefit from some of Chelsea's current forward talent, even if Mourinho's squad is bloated in wide areas. The Blues boss already has Eden Hazard, Juan Cuadrado and Willian available to torment defences from the wings.
But Bale is a more direct attacking option. Hazard's trickery and guile would combine well with the Welshman's physical power.
With Hazard and Spanish playmaker Cesc Fabregas supplying him, Bale would be practically unstoppable at Stamford Bridge.
That potential may be enough for Mourinho to justify spending a fortune to front-load a squad that needs some help at the back.
Before he looks at the forward line, Mourinho would be wise to revamp an ageing and plodding defence. His best bet may be Raphael Varane, his former prodigy at Madrid.
Mourinho will welcome news that the dynamic and athletic centre-back could be available this summer. Sunday People writer Tom Hopkinson (h/t Mirror) reports Los Blancos may sell the young Frenchman as they attempt to seal a new deal for veteran defender Pepe.
An announcement regarding the latter's contract situation is reportedly imminent. Hopkinson believes Madrid will then listen to offers in the £22 million range for Varane.
Mourinho has already made the 21-year-old his top summer target, according to Mirror reporter John Cross. Chelsea already have the ideal defensive partner for the player Mourinho accelerated into the first team during his time in the Spanish capital.
Varane and fellow young French international Kurt Zouma would form a formidable duo. They would certainly offer more pace than John Terry and Gary Cahill.
If he lands Varane and pairs him with Zouma, Mourinho would ensure Chelsea boast an uncompromising foundation at the heart of a defence that should stay stingy for the next decade.
That might make a move for Varane more necessary than splashing the cash to bring Bale back to England's top flight.
If you didn't know his name before, you better now.
Wisconsin junior Sam Dekker was on fire from behind the arc Saturday against Arizona, going 5-of-6 from deep. Late in the second half, he hit a three-point jumper to put the Badgers up by eight with 20 seconds left.
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and girlfriend Olivia Munn were in the crowd, and he was clearly pumped up after the big shot.
After the shot, Dekker's brother, John, posted a picture of his reaction after the shot.
Dekker finished with 27 points in the 85-78 win, helping Wisconsin punch its ticket to the Final Four. After also catching Wisconsin's Sweet 16 game, we're pretty sure Rodgers isn't going home yet.

The pressure to perform and come up with a winning performance is ratcheted up for DraftKings owners as we hit the final stages of the regular season. Finding the perfect lineup derived from the six games in the early part of Saturday's schedule is a challenging proposition.
Before the teams hit the ice, here's a look at the top players at each position and the best value picks to help put together a winning lineup.
C Ryan Getzlaf, Anaheim Ducks (OPRK: 25th; FPPG: 4.0) $7,400
Ryan Getzlaf is the engine that makes the Ducks go, and he comes into this matinee game with the slumping New York Islanders with a ton of momentum.
Getzlaf and the Ducks were trailing the Boston Bruins in the late stages of their game on Thursday night, but Anaheim found a way to win. Getzlaf assisted on Corey Perry's game-tying goal in the final minute and then scored the winner with a vicious wrister in overtime. He also had five shots on goal against Boston.
Getzlaf has scored 24 goals and 44 assists this season, and he has four goals and three assists in his last 10 games. The Islanders are a halting 3-5-2 in their last 10 games, and Getzlaf is in a perfect position to pound them while they are down.
W Chris Kreider, New York Rangers (OPRK: 15th; FPPG: 2.7) $4,700
The Bruins are the perfect matchup for Chris Kreider. First, Kreider comes into the game having hit the 20-goal mark for the first time in his career, which should give him a burst of confidence. He also scored two goals in New York's 5-1 victory over Ottawa on Thursday night. Kreider has scored three goals and three assists in his last 10 games, firing 27 shots on goal in that time.
An even bigger reason to go with Kreider is the current state of their opponents. The Boston Bruins (0-3-3) are slumping, and most of their defensemen don't have the speed to cope with the explosive Kreider. Look for the Rangers to try to get the puck to Kreider on stretch plays or to the outside, where he can use his speed. He may have another two-goal game on Saturday afternoon.
D Johnny Boychuk, New York Islanders (OPRK: 14th; FPPG: 3.6) $5,000
Johnny Boychuk can bring it from the back end, and he has been delivering for the Islanders since they added him to their lineup just before the start of the season. Boychuk has pounded home eight goals and 25 assists this season, and he has been a strong fixture on the power play with five goals and 10 assists when the Islanders have the man advantage.
The Islanders need leadership at this point, and Boychuk has a load of that commodity. He was a member of the Stanley Cup-winning Bruins in 2011, and he went to another Stanley Cup Final with them two years later. He knows how to make big plays when his team needs them most, and he should be able to take advantage of the Ducks, who will be playing the third of a four-game East Coast road trip.
G Marc-Andre Fleury, Pittsburgh Penguins (OPRK: 30th; FPPG: 5.0) $8,400
We would never offer Marc-Andre Fleury up if this was a playoff game, but since the Penguins are hosting the lowly Arizona Coyotes in the regular season, we figure it is safe to go with the Penguins' goalie.
Snide remarks aside, Fleury has enjoyed a terrific year and has a 32-17-8 record, a 2.27 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage with nine shutouts. Fleury may very well have an opportunity to pick up his 10th bagel in this game.
UTIL Matthew Nieto, San Jose Sharks (OPRK: 10th; FPPG: 2.0) $3,700
You probably haven't been paying much attention to Matthew Nieto, but he is a gritty, underpriced forward who just may pay off for the San Jose Sharks in a big way against the Philadelphia Flyers.
Nieto has scored just eight goals and 16 assists in 64 games this season, but a closer look reveals that he is starting to figure it out. He has four goals and three assists in his last 10 games, and the 5'11", 190-pounder is not afraid to go into the dirty areas and take a hit just to make a play. Look for him to get involved on the scoresheet here.
