Daily iPad App: Dig deep with Terraria
The easiest way to describe Terraria would be to say that it's like a 2D version of Minecraft, but this would also be selling the game short in many regards. The familiar sandbox gameplay mechanics that the two titles share -- things like gathering resources and crafting items -- mask a much deeper game that lies just below the surface. It offers an experience that will suit a large variety of gamers thanks to the ability to play in many different ways, and progress towards your own desired goal.
When you start up Terraria, you are dropped into a randomly generated world with just a few tools at your disposal and nothing in the way of shelter or supplies. You must explore your new surroundings and gather things like wood, stone and iron ore to begin building a proper shelter. For those who found the resource-management part of Minecraft to be a bit much, you'll likely feel more at home with Terraria, as it streamlines the process quite a bit.
For example, if you want to gather all the wood on a tree, you don't have to chop each individual portion of the tree separately; you can simply hack away at its base and the entire thing will come tumbling down. This same simplicity is carried over into the crafting menus, where a list of craftable items is presented to you, rather than forcing you to discover the right crafting combinations on your own.
Doing basic tasks like constructing buildings, defeating the various low-level monsters that roam the world and speaking to other human characters help to flesh out the world as well as open up things like new items and enemy encounters. Like Minecraft, Terraria doesn't require that you do anything, and you could quite literally play the game for an infinite number of hours doing little more than building a shelter and sitting inside of it. It's up to you to seek out things to do, and once you do a little exploring, you'll realize that the game could well suck up tens if not hundreds of your hours before you see everything it has to offer.
Despite drawing influences from a very popular title, Terraria really is its own beast, and you'd be foolish to pass it up on iOS. The Windows version of Terraria costs US$9.99, and while that alone is a bargain, the iPad cuts that price in half to $4.99. It's an absolute bargain and a gaming experience that will be unique for every single person that plays it. A must-have.

Transparent gel speaker plays music through the magic of ionic conduction (video)
It may be hard to believe, but that transparent disk in the photo above is actually a fully functioning speaker. A team of researchers at Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences have pioneered a never before seen application of ionic conductivity by creating a see-through artificial muscle that can produce sounds spanning the entire audible spectrum. While ionic conduction isn't a novel idea, it's been considered impractical due to the fact that ionic materials react poorly to high voltage. The team, which included postdoctoral research fellows Jeong-Yun Sun and Christoph Keplinger (pictured above), circumvented that obstacle by placing a layer of rubber between two sheets of transparent conductive gel, allowing the system to work with both high voltage and high actuation, two qualities necessary for sound reproduction. Theoretically, soft machine technology such as this can be used to do much more than play Grieg's Peer Gynt, particularly in the fields of robotics, mobile computing and adaptive optics. To watch it in action, check out the video after the break.

Jairus Byrd Injury: Updates on Bills Safety's Foot, Potential Return Date
The Buffalo Bills are in a difficult place, as they have the quality contributors to compete but youth at skill positions that could hold them back. If there is one reason for excitement, it's the fact that Buffalo's defense has legitimate star power.
Unfortunately, two-time All-Pro free safety Jairus Byrd is now facing a foot injury, per Tim Graham of The Buffalo News.
Doug Marrone says Jairus Byrd is having injured foot evaluated by same doctor who gave Mario Williams second opinion.
— Tim Graham (@ByTimGraham) August 30, 2013
Byrd missed Buffalo's Week 4 preseason game against the Detroit Lions to get the injury evaluated.
Byrd, 26, played in all 16 games during the 2012 regular season, picking up 76 tackles with five interceptions, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. The four-year veteran has maintained good health throughout his career, missing two total games thus far.
Unfortunately, Buffalo's top defensive play maker now has a sense of uncertainty.
This is a continuation of a tumultuous offseason for Byrd, as the Bills surprisingly slapped him with the franchise tag, per ESPN. Since then, the two sides have been at odds and Ed Werder of ESPN has reported that Byrd may request a trade.
If his foot issues continue to linger, his request for a trade may be of little relevance.
Losing Byrd would be a critical blow for a team that could potentially ride he and Mario Williams to a high-quality defensive season. The offensive additions have caught headlines, but Byrd and Williams lead a defense with players such as Marcell Dareus and Stephon Gilmore ready to shine.
Unfortunately, Gilmore will miss the next 6-to-8 weeks as he recovers from a fractured wrist, per NFL.com. Add Byrd's injury and the season is becoming all too familiar for Bills fans, as promise turns to doubt via injuries.
Check back with Bleacher Report for more updates on Byrd's health and potential return date.
Night Vision Camcorder offers low-light iOS video capture, sleazy marketing
For US$1.99, the Night Vision Camcorder app does exactly what it says on the label. It enhances sensors so you can better see and record low-light sources.
The marketing for this app, which was developed in Russia, is frankly appalling. It shows numerous young "hotties" in a low-light club atmosphere. Cynicism and misogyny drip from the app screen shots.
Feel free to ignore the skeezy marketing.
For two bucks, what you get is actually a really cool and useful tool that you can use for finding items that have dropped to the floor under your desk or for capturing video and photos without deploying a flash.
The app offers numerous features, including a user-guided amplifier, front and rear camera pickers, LED flash control, zoom and more, making this a solid value -- despite the creep-out.

A core microbiome associated with the peritoneal tumors of pseudomyxoma peritonei
Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a malignancy characterized by dissemination of mucus-secreting cells throughout the peritoneum. This disease is associated with significant morbidity and mortality and despite effective treatment options for early-stage disease, patients with PMP often relapse. Thus, there is a need for additional treatment options to reduce relapse rate and increase long-term survival. A previous study identified the presence of both typed and non-culturable bacteria associated with PMP tissue and determined that increased bacterial density was associated with more severe disease. These findings highlighted the possible role for bacteria in PMP disease.
Methods:
To more clearly define the bacterial communities associated with PMP disease, we employed a sequenced-based analysis to profile the bacterial populations found in PMP tumor and mucin tissue in 11 patients. Sequencing data were confirmed by in situ hybridization at multiple taxonomic depths and by culturing. A pilot clinical study was initiated to determine whether the addition of antibiotic therapy affected PMP patient outcome.Main results: We determined that the types of bacteria present are highly conserved in all PMP patients; the dominant phyla are the Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes. A core set of taxon-specific sequences were found in all 11 patients; many of these sequences were classified into taxonomic groups that also contain known human pathogens. In situ hybridization directly confirmed the presence of bacteria in PMP at multiple taxonomic depths and supported our sequence-based analysis. Furthermore, culturing of PMP tissue samples allowed us to isolate 11 different bacterial strains from eight independent patients, and in vitro analysis of subset of these isolates suggests that at least some of these strains may interact with the PMP-associated mucin MUC2. Finally, we provide evidence suggesting that targeting these bacteria with antibiotic treatment may increase the survival of PMP patients.
Conclusions:
Using 16S amplicon-based sequencing, direct in situ hybridization analysis and culturing methods, we have identified numerous bacterial taxa that are consistently present in all PMP patients tested. Combined with data from a pilot clinical study, these data support the hypothesis that adding antimicrobials to the standard PMP treatment could improve PMP patient survival.
Oseltamivir use and outcomes during the 2009 influenza A H1N1 pandemic in Taiwan
The Taiwan CDC provided free oseltamivir to all patients with influenza infections confirmed by rapid testing or who had clinical warning symptoms during the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic in Taiwan. However, oseltamivir utilization patterns, cost, and outcomes among oseltamivir-treated patients remained unclear.MethodA population-level, observational cohort study was conducted using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Database from January to December 2009 to describe the use of oseltamivir.Result: Prescription trend over weeks increased after a change in government policy and responded to the influenza virus activity. The overall prescription rate was 22.33 per 1000 persons, with the highest prescription rate of 116.5 for those aged 7--12 years, followed by 69.0 for those aged 13--18 years, while the lowest rate was 1.7 for those aged >= 65 years. As influenza virus activity increased, the number of prescriptions for those aged <=18 years rose significantly, whereas no substantial change was observed for those aged >=65 years. There were also regional variations in terms of oseltamivir utilization and influenza complication rates. Conclusions: Oseltamivir was widely used in the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic in Taiwan, particularly in those aged 7--18 years. The number of prescriptions for oseltamivir increased with a change in government policy and with increasing cases of pandemic influenza. Further study is needed to examine whether there is an over- or under-use of anti-influenza drugs in different age groups or regions and to examine the current policy of public use of anti-influenza drugs to reduce influenza-associated morbidity and mortality.
Court: Apple needs monitoring after 'blatant' e-book price fixing
Following Judge Denise Cote's ruling that Apple conspired with book publishers to increase the price of e-books across the board, the DOJ put forth a proposal intent on rectifying the damage caused by Apple's actions.
The proposal was extremely far-reaching, and called for Apple to allow competitors like Amazon to include links to their own e-book stores from within their iOS apps. The proposal also suggested a court-appointed monitor should be hired to keep an eye on Apple's activities and to ensure that the company doesn't run afoul of antitrust laws going forward. What's more, the proposal also called for Apple to hire an internal antitrust compliance officer to train and educate Apple executives about the ins and outs of antitrust laws.
While Cote stated yesterday that Apple doesn't have to worry about a punishment that affects the way it conducts its business (translation: its in-app purchase rules are safe), the same can't be said for corporate oversight.
She said a monitor would be necessary, after Apple had failed to show it learned its lesson from its "blatant" violations of antitrust law.
The monitor, she said, would likely be installed to review Apple's internal antitrust compliance program and procedures and recommend changes, and also required annual antitrust training for employees in Apple's e-books and content businesses.
Apple had vigorously contested hiring of a monitor, saying in court papers it would be "extremely costly and burdensome."
The Justice Department had earlier also sought to force Apple to hire an internal antitrust compliance officer, but has since backed off that demand.
Apple, of course, plans to appeal the ruling.

Ramifications of Johnny Manziel's Odd Suspension by NCAA
Johnny Manziel was suspended by the NCAA and Texas A&M for the first half of the team’s Week 1 game against the Rice Owls for an "inadvertent violation" of collegiate rules, per George Schroeder of the USA Today.
This ruling and subsequent punishment may have officially closed the case, but there will be serious ramifications from the odd suspension.
Manziel was embroiled in a controversy that featured several memorabilia dealers claiming that the Aggies sophomore was getting paid to sign merchandise, an action illegal in the bylaws of the NCAA.
By receiving only a half-game suspension in a Week 1 matchup against Rice, the sophomore quarterback has avoided serious trouble in a case that looked convincingly against him with plenty of circumstantial evidence.
Whether he made money signing the autographs or not, Johnny Football undeniably put himself in a bad situation. The NCAA bylaw being enforced (12.5.2.1, per ESPN) refers to the knowledge that while he didn’t get paid firsthand for the autographs, he didn’t actively try to stop the sale of his signature.
Manziel must learn from this punishment and consider it a free pass to learn from his mistakes. Missing the first half of a game will be tough on the defending Heisman Trophy winner, but it could have been so much worse.
Texas A&M should also be thankful. Not only did the university avoid the drama that surrounds a lengthy NCAA investigation, but losing its star quarterback for just the first half of the first game should also be viewed as a blessing from the sport’s governing body.
The school avoided any ramifications from this ordeal by acting fast and doing its best to prove this was an isolated incident of ignorance to the bylaws.
Of all parties involved, Texas A&M comes out of this with the best perception from the public.
While Manziel and the Aggies avoided serious ramifications, the NCAA has opened Pandora’s box with its lackluster decision to levy such an odd punishment. This decision makes the NCAA look incredibly weak and desperate to exercise its power.
After the NCAA claimed that it would come down harder on those that commit infractions in response to the Penn State case, it showed no grit or power with the investigation and subsequent suspension of Manziel.
Instead of hiding behind a ridiculous rule buried deep in the bylaws, the NCAA should have done more investigating to get the deeper truth or shouldn’t have punished the sophomore at all.
Suspending Manziel for the first half of Texas A&M’s Week 1 matchup is the NCAA’s way of proving to itself that it is in control of the situation. Everyone else looking at the sport understands that this is just another reason the governing body of college sports is a joke.

Player sweeps all three Stranglethorn Fishing winning spots in one day
So it was a great surprise to everyone involved when early this summer, Nirad of The Underbog (US-PvP) snagged not only first place in the tourney but also second place and then third as well -- all in a single day. "The contest wasn't a ghost town event," Nirad says. "I was killed once and had to avoid seven or eight Horde. I fished around Yojamba Isle and Grom' gol Base Camp, as well as inland. I set my hearthstone to the inn and teleported in all three times. I stealthed to hand in the quests all three times, as there were 5 or 6 horde immediately around the NPC you hand in the quests to. Later I heard that a number of Horde were also at the entrance to the tunnel heading into the city to keep people from running in."

Dance Studio and Abyssal Maw shelved, not cancelled
Ghostcrawler tweeted a bit of information in response to some of the angst over new models only being 25% done (people are not happy they're only that far along). In a series of tweets, Ghostcrawler says:
The amount of QQ over "models are ~25% done" is hurting my brain.
The good news is this is something actively being worked on, not a shelved project like dance studio or abyssal maw.
Also, shelved does not mean cancelled. :)
Now the important thing to remember is that last sentence: "shelved does not mean cancelled." There is still every possibility these things are going to happen, just not anytime soon (Blizzard soon and normal soon).
Companies commonly shelve things when there are more important priorities for departments to work on. With a graphic / modeling heavy task like redoing all the character models for WoW, that takes a lot more priority than giving people new dances. So personally I welcome this news, I'm glad to see that Blizzard is putting things in this priority order.

New Zealand Parliament bans software patents with a 117-4 vote
After five years of debate and a 117-4 vote, New Zealand's Parliament has passed a bill that says computer programs are not considered inventions and are therefore ineligible for patents. However, the phrasing of the bill is flexible enough to provide some leeway. Since "products or processes" are understood to be patentable inventions, software that is integral to the implementation of a process designed to improve hardware can be included in the terms of a patent application. The text of the bill, intended to replace the outdated Patents Act of 1953, states, "Protecting software by patenting is inconsistent with the open source model, and its proponents oppose it. A number of submitters argued that there is no 'inventive step' in software development, as 'new' software invariably builds on existing software." You can come to your own conclusions on the matter by checking out the bill at the source link below.

EU Hearthstone beta coming "soon"
Of course, we're all hoping for the former rather than the latter, but even then, they aren't going to open up the EU beta to everyone who's registered all at once. Rather like the US version of the beta, it will be released in waves. Why's it taking so long? Well we don't know, of course, but smart money's on localization. The EU version has to be translated into six other languages, and while German is definitely done, given how it was playable at Gamescom, who knows what the status of the other five might be.
Hit the break for the full Blizzard statement.

Report: Quartet of classic Chevys stolen during Monterey week
Filed under: Classics, Auctions, Government/Legal, Chevrolet
The weeklong festivities that take place in Monterey, CA for the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance draw in some of the finest cars from around the world. Unfortunately, these events also seem to be drawing in some opportunistic lowlifes looking to score to some high-dollar hardware the easy way. In this case, four classic Chevy cars were stolen over the weekend of August 17th.
According to Hemmings, an extremely rare '61 Impala SS 409, a '61 Impala resto-mod and a one-owner, unrestored '57 Bel Air all went missing after failing to sell at various auctions. The article states that the Impala SS 409 - worth an estimated $220,000 - disappeared from the Russo and Steele auction, while the other two cars vanished from the Mecum auction. In addition to these thefts, Jalopnik is reporting that a customized 1962 Corvette was also stolen around the same time only instead of being stolen from an auction, this classic 'Vette was snatched up as the owner was enjoying dinner. Hemmings points out that the cars were most likely targeted to be stripped for parts, but check out both reports and keep an eye out for these beautiful rides.
